Scott Ballew is an Austin, Texas-based filmmaker and musician. For years, he's directed unforgettable videos and documentaries for Yeti and others. In 2020, he decided to take up songwriting and recorded his first album just a year later. This week, Ballew releases his third album, Rio Bravo. It's an exceptional work that somehow combines Ballew's affinity for Townes Van Zandt and other Austin legends with his love for reverb-drenched Ennio Morricone soundtracks. We love it. During our chat, Scott tells us about his unlikely journey from football star to director to songwriter and about how filmmaking has shaped his music output. We also talk about the making of Rio Bravo, Scott's growing guitar collection, the time he spent with Townes Van Zandt's Gibson, and how – thanks to Pearl Jam – he ended up playing football for the University of Washington. Six-time Grammy-winning multi-instrumentalist, producer, and composer John Leventhal joins us this week to talk about 'Rumble Strip,' his long-awaited debut solo album! John tells us why, after five decades in the music business, he decided to make a solo album. We chat about his writing process, the home studio he and partner Rosanne Cash have in NYC, the gear that he used on the album, his favorite microphones, and his go-to acoustic tuning (CGDGBE). Also discussed are the influence of Ry Cooder on his playing, the magic found in old Gibson flattops (and '60s Guilds), and why John tries to ignore industry trends when he's working as a producer. Finally, we talk about a very special feature in the Fretboard Journal's 54th issue on a Martin that belonged to John's father-in-law, Johnny Cash. Craig Korth is a bluegrass musician, instrument collector, and luthier based in British Columbia. Over the years, Craig performed at countless festivals, ran a music camp, and amassed a world-class collection of vintage instruments. As he recounted at the end of his appearance on episode 271 of the Fretboard Journal Podcast, he's also struggled with focal dystonia, a neurological condition that can wreak havoc on high-level musicians. For this week's episode, Craig candidly shares some of the steps he's taken to heal his focal dystonia and play at a high level again. From exercises like taking up the upright bass to emotional support groups and mind-altering psychedelic therapy sessions, it's a journey unlike any we've ever shared. This week, we share two great interviews: First, we talk to Rasmus Zandvliet, a young (17-year-old!) aspiring luthier from the Netherlands teaching himself how to build acoustic guitars from scratch using YouTube videos for inspiration and a modest array of tools (and a curling iron to bend sides!). Rasmus is already on to his third guitar and garnered a rave review from Jeremy Sheppard, aka Jeremy the Guitar Hunter (who owns an Alpine spruce/mahogany 000-18 built by Rasmus). In the second half of this episode, we talk to Jeremy himself about his start as a YouTube content creator, his love for acoustic guitars, and why he began flipping guitars (he estimates he's up to 5,000!). We also talk about why this digital content guru has decided to take a job at an old school brick & mortar guitar store, how he befriended Rasmus, and what he thinks of his 000-18 from the young builder. According to local news outlet, The News Herald, the company notified employees on Tuesday. The newspaper says the company also issued a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) Act Notice to local county officials. The notice states that the closing and subsequent layoffs include all 100 employees at the Hildebran facility. The company tells the news outlet it is exploring relocation possibilities for employees to other North Carolina locations. Gildan also operates yarn manufacturing facilities in the cities of Mocksville and Salisbury. The news comes as the latest in a series of ongoing consolidations at Gildan. In early 2018, the company closed a distribution center in Anaheim, California and a dyeing facility in Massachusetts. Social Media is Not Non Profit Aaron: We started this discussion with the topic of how social media is not ‘non-profit' - what do you mean when you say that? Talk with us about the idea of social media being a ‘for profit' business activity. Terry: You always see that one post people put up saying “like or share my page to make sure you see my posts” Does that work to keep posts in followers' feeds? Aaron: If someone knows any buzzwords about marketing, they know ‘ROI' - what they really want to know is, ‘is social media marketing really worth paying for' Let's talk about paid social media ads vs. other methods of advertising in terms of costs, effectiveness, and what makes it different from other marketing channels. (cost/targeting/effectiveness) Terry: One of the strengths of Social Media is the ability to define an audience; Let's talk more about how you can target specific groups with social media advertising. Sponsored by: SGIA.org | 2017 SGIA Expo in New Orleans - Oct 10-12 Our regular listeners know this, but 2 Regular Guys are all about garment decorating, a bit of fun, and no rants or lectures or selling. We are not doing this for our employers, but rather for our industry. Since February 2013, The 2 Regular Guys have been the first and the most listened to garment decorating industry podcast on this planet! We are humbled by all of you tuning in each week. We work hard to bring you information that will make your business better, and our industry better. Take a look at our incredible weekly guest list and you'll understand where this industry goes for news, interviews and the heartbeat of garment decorating. Thanks for listening! Made to Make It with Ryan Moor Share with our listeners a little bit about your own start in the industry. How did you learn to pull a squeegee in your garage? Your new book is Made to Make It: A Guide to Business Success in Screen Printing. Sounds as if we're not talking screens and inks. So this is more than a book, it's interactive education. I know that because I have a signed copy. Tell us about that. Where does the reader (or our listener) start with the process? Part 2 of the book is entitled Developing Your Customer. I love the idea of this. Talk about the concept. VeeAtCentralianShop: What surprised him as he talked with printers around the country for this book VeeAtCentralianShop: What is the number 1 mistake screen printers make (on the business side)? Our listeners are always interested in discussions on purchasing equipment and supplies. Let's spend some time talking about this. How large an impact has your online store and the ability of customers to place online orders have on your business? You talk about Getting Lean and Optimizing Your Processes. I'd like to have a conversation on that subject. We devote whole shows to planning and you wrap up your book with this subject. Share your thoughts on this with our listeners. Would you like to give us a quick update on the philanthropic project you told us about back in March? All Made Apparel Thanks for being on the show and congratulations on your new book. We all do it but do you really know what its doing for you? In this episode we go DEEP into Bodyweight Training. The ins and outs of training using nothing but your own body as a form of resistance. When you add resistance or stress to the body in the form of exercises your body has to adapt. Your body matches the stress applied to it. Continue to do the same exercises the same way for the same amount of reps and over time the training effect is lost and you normalize. The problem with bodyweight exercises is you can’t really add more weight unless you add external resistance which then moves you out of true bodyweight training. So you have to increase volume, intensity, time under tension. Wanna go deep on this concept? Well this is your episode!
