The 2 Regular Guys podcast has evolved from Aaron Montgomery and Terry Combs hanging out in hotel bars and restaurants after trade shows, eating chicken wings, disagreeing over ranch or bleu cheese as the true and proper dipping sauce, and talking the garment decorating and personalization industry. A long list of industry friends joined into those conversations over the years, in cities across America and the world. These same friends plus new friends we meet along the way now come back to join us as guests to the program. The trade shows continue, the industry grows and matures, and the 2 Regular Guys continue those conversations, talking garment and product decorating (and on occasion beer and chicken wings) weekly. Welcome to our 8th Year. Come along for the ride!

(As a writer do you cringe a little when you see what companies are putting out there?) -Showing that they clearly didn't proofread: straight-up bad grammar, blatant misspellings, strange capitalizations, like "We serve all Businesses," incorrect use of apostrophes - like your's instead of yours, or dog's instead of dogs -Overly formal or trying-too-hard-to-be-proper-or-professional, resulting in outdated or fuddy-duddy or unrelatable copy -Copy that sounds like someone wrote it at 3 am, trying to be too casual, conversational or stream of consciousness -Too much copy or too little copy in a certain amount of space on a website, like on the above the page copy on a home page -Making the copy all about themselves, rather than about the problems (or goals) they can solve for their customers -Similarly, focusing on features, rather than on benefits. If you are in a leader's position, a face when people are tuning in or looking to you for advice, it is your responsibility to do more, be better, and show up as the best version of yourself. Not stand for the I CAN'T and the shallowness of being overly principled.Principles v Values - Cursing is an effect, and saying I curse is a value = not true. Your value is being able to say what you want and speak your mind with effect. But is cursing required in all circumstances? No, so it is not a value. Same with the way we dress, act, etc. Those are not values. They may be effects or ways to express some values, but your values always serve you in all cases, and we need to lead with those, NOT PrinciplesWhen people leave unexpectedly (or expectedly)Training and cross-trainingOdd retirement storyWhen the supply chain snapsTake advantage of distributor availability toolsOffer alternativesAaron - I also think we need to stand up a little more. The distributors in this situation have shown a side that I don't like. They got complacent, and with all the buying up of other companies, they clearly have money to do more for their customers than they are doing. They are fine to make their problems their customers' problems. Why would you not waive handling fees when you are forcing your customer to add hours of work to their plate trying to find products they need. Why would you not do something about the shipping charges when you are forcing your customer to get complete orders from multiple warehouses. Trust me, no one wants to spend 3 hours finding what they need to fulfill an order and wait for it to show up from multiple places, yet the customer is being penalized for the distributor's logistic issues. As customers, we also need to ask for a partnership and not let up until they agree to help find a solution, and not just say - It is what it is.  If they “fire” you as a customer, then you didn't have a partnership anyway. You were just a number on a spreadsheet to them. When disaster strikes - Equipment Failure / Natural Disasters / Utility OutagesTreat stoppages as an eventuality, not just a possibility.

Facebook Live Video #5Things 5 Reasons to Keep Your Workplace Tidy From someone who works with slobs... Crystal RynnFirst impressions never have a second chance. A neat and orderly workplace instills greater confidence in potential customers and conveys professionalism and attention to detail.Increase productivity of employees. If you have to walk across the building for a piece of tape, or spend time looking for things that weren't put back in their place you are wasting valuable time and energy with no benefit. Every workstation should have the materials needed on hand and they should be put back in their proper place when not in use so there's never a hunt for tools to complete an otherwise quick and simple task.Reduce stress and foster an environment for happier employees. Clean and decluttered spaces tend to feel more relaxing and inspire a “feel good” feeling. You can also get more work done in less time giving greater feelings of accomplishment to employees. With the amount of time spent in the workplace you want to ensure workers are as comfortable as possible in their environment because happy employees are usually productive employees.Minimize hazards and safeguard employee health. In the event of an emergency having obstacles in the hallway can slow down or even prevent employees from leaving the building. Proper air filtration and cleanliness also help reduce sickness and lost workdays.Save money and keep things running smoothly. Untidy environments are distracting and distractions in the workplace can eat up valuable man-hours. Time is money, don't let those little tasks like finding a piece of paper hold you or others back from actual productivity. Be Part of #5Things If you would like to present your 5 Things,

Adrienne Palmer is editor-in-chief of Screen Printing and BIG Picture magazines. And Jeremy Picker is Creative Director and Founder at AMB3R Creative. Hey guys - what's going on?Aaron: You are breaking the rules, Jay, but I think we can make an exception. When I think of 2022 Apparel trends I think of Styles, Colors and even decorating techniques. Jay: You nailed it Aaron!! It is all three of those things and even the words that we choose to describe the styles, colors and decoration techniques. I was reminded of this when Vicki Ostrom, Futurist and Trend Analyst at SanMar and founder of Trendependent was sharing her wisdom on an education session for PromoKitchen. She shared a reference that I later looked up which was from Adobe called Creative Trends 2022. In that report, Adobe mentions, “The seriousness of life during the pandemic has taken its toll. Tired of the mundane and familiar, people are more carefree, high-spirited, and joyful as they seek re-connection, escape from boredom, and positivity in the new year.”Aaron: Carefree, joyful and seeking re-connection - those all make sense to me! What other trends are likely to have an impact on apparel Jay?Jay: Being active and getting outside has always been important. Studies have found people report a higher level of vitality, enthusiasm, pleasure, and self esteem, and a lower level of tension, depression and fatigue after they have walked outside! I'm sure that's why research revealed exercising outdoors was the most popular fitness trend in 2021. That takes us to 2 very powerful trends that have carried over into 2022: to be outside AND to be active, walking and more involved in fitness. For specific examples of this, ASI recently released an apparel study (last month). The study is based on data that was analyzed in late 2021 using surveys of nearly 40,000 consumers. That data was presented in a collection of the most popular promo products in the U.S. and identifies which states and regions they're most influential in. Outerwear & Performance wear were number 1 and number 2 in every region!

If people want to check it out they can find it at http://successkeys.cc/ - This to us seemed like a potential next step. Some of the other Mastermind Members are working on their own program as part of the next level certification so it is all really nice synergy and allows us to create and share together.Aaron: Explain FUNdamentalsTerry: Why might a garment or product decorator care about this for their business?Brian: How I do anything is how I do everything….It's an Inside job ;-)Aaron: These principles are the roadmap, or the flight plan when you have an aviation guy like Brian. So while they might seem a bit woo-woo in concept, in practice, these are all the tools you need to be successful. Without having this framework, it doesn't matter how good of a screen printer you are, how great your digitizer is,

Within a year she wanted to do more. Laurie said she had been wanting a Sawgrass printer for about 10 years and one night impulsively purchased an SG400. She knew nothing about the printer or sublimation. Fast forward to owning her printer for nearly 2 years and she was signing a contract with Sawgrass to be a product ambassador and teach the Creative studio program. Covid 19 changed the road map on how her journey as a Sawgrass ambassador was supposed to start. She went from planning several different ways to market the workshops to "HEY you start in two weeks and by the way, you are your own marketing department." Aside from the lockdowns, masks, and turmoil during this journey, Laurie says she would not change a thing. With the rising costs of online advertising, a massive influx of new businesses online, you MUST have a niche to focus on. It seems like every crafter is suddenly becoming a business (not a bad thing, by the way, brings more exposure), and the market can be hard to reach if you are not speaking to your ideal customer. Suppose you are struggling to grow or meet your goals? The reason for that is trying to be everything to everybody. But what ends up happening is you are nothing to nobody. I saw this from Brendon Burchard on Instagram (Display on screen) This to me is why it is important to have a niche for focus.Terry: Be an expert at what you do. Be an expert at who and where you sell. What is a niche market?Aaron: A niche market is a group of specific potential customers who connect to your message.

She is the founder of the Sassy Subber Facebook group, the host of a weekly education broadcast on Facebook and YouTube called “The Sass” and the proprietor of the Sassy Subber Designs Etsy Shop and the Sassy Subber e-commerce site. The winner of two 2021 Reggie awards, Nicky lives in upstate New York with her husband, adult children and pets.Terry: Nicky, tell us how it all started for you. It started with my dad aka Mr Sassypants (funny short story behind that)Aaron: Before we talk about your more public image, tell us a little bit about your own business.I actually have three businesses outside of The Sass ( my teaching show) I have the www.thesassysubber.com ( my printing services) https://www.etsy.com/shop/TheSassySubber (for my digital designs) and my www.lpbdesigns.com  is my physical business. Terry: What are your favorite items to decorate? And what product makes you groan just a little when a customer brings it up? Ask me about the 40 tumbler club ( I strongly dislike tumblers ). I will talk about my favorites too. Aaron: What's one thing you wish you knew before you got into sublimation? The amount of trial and error that would be in this and how people who teach this make it look easy and perfect.Terry: What would you say is the number one question you get from new sublimators? It's a close race between where did you get that and time, temp and pressure. Aaron: Nicky, why so much focus on education for you? When you work in this business it can seem very lonely no one will share with you the where the who or the why. Like it is some big secret. I wanted to break the walls down. show anyone and everyone they can do this and they are not alone. I show my mistakes, my frustration, and my successes. Being genuine also plays a huge role in that. I am real people, the girl next store, your hype girl, I am the whole package. I refuse to let you quit. Terry: Let's talk trade shows in your future for 2022.Other things I am teaching at my first trade show EEM show in April and at the Applique Getaway in July. Questions we didn't get to in the comments section during Part 1 of this show:Aaron: From Josh Hester - Is the powder shaking machine worth it? Anything that can save labor is worth it. The shaker dryer allows you to do other things while the machine takes care of the work. 1 issue I have seen with this is that if there is a problem with the print you might not know until it's too late.Terry: Also from Josh Hester - What is the average cost per print? A lot goes into pricing as my overhead is most likely different than yours and you just can't take all of your supplies multiple by 3 and say that's your price. The printer you are using, who are you buying your supplies from, are you getting a better deal buying in bulk, what rip software you are using, what are your ink settings, and what is your hourly overhead cost are all factors in pricing? (Un-bee-leave-able) Starting a Business Aaron: Terry I'm excited about today. As you know I love working with small businesses. I have found when working with small business owners they are so mired in the details that they forget the big picture. So I have made it my mission to preach the fundamentals and the grand vision so they have a foundation that can withstand setbacks. Because of that, you might notice that I'm spending a lot of time in the success principles, finding your why, setting goals, business planning, and more. Most small businesses actually have the tools to handle the details, but their lack of foundation makes them uncertain so the tiniest details freeze them and share resources to gain confidence and take action. But with all that said if we can also give them the more nuts and bolts type tips, I believe we can also help our industry grow. So if you are an experienced business owner, we would love your feedback on what you suggest, and also you might be able to take a tip of today that maybe you missed or need to go back and revisit. If you are new, get your yellow legal pad out!But Terry, I'm going to ask you a favor. You have to keep me on target, and out of the clouds as I can already see where I will get off track. Some of these items and questions I'm already thinking about how having a marketing plan, a clear mission, and brand identity is the answer, but I know I can do this. You are in charge. Welcome to the Show!Terry: Start us off by telling us about your journey into DTF printing. When did it start and what has that process been like?TODD: In the summer of 2020 I started hearing about this “new” technology where people were printing full color transfers in house with converted printers. After a few months of researching, I found a US company that I was happy with and placed an order for a printer and supplies. It took a good 3 months and over 1k in supplies to learn how each step of the process worked and feel comfortable and confident in the final product. Aaron: So when you got started, what was the thing that stands out that was way different than you expected it to be? The biggest surprise. TODD: That's a hard question as I had spent months researching everything I could about the process and printer but color matching is always fun to do as not all profiles are created equal. I did find out fairly quickly that if not in constant use you are going to have issues fast.Terry: So for anyone unfamiliar with DTF, what is the process to create a DTF transfer?TODD: The short story, you print on a film, let the ink set up, add an adhesive powder, cure, and now you have a ready-to-press transfer.I use Epson P600's to print on a film and we cure using a manual method which if you are not using an enclosed area like a sand blasting cabinet you are going to get the adhesive powder everywhere. For curing you have a few options like heat press, oven, and even a tunnel dryer. There are 2 types of film that you are able to print on a cold peel and a hot peel. I wouldn't say one is better than the other and this is more of a personal preference. These transfers can adhere to cottons, poly, blends, and more. We did a test a few weeks ago on Tuesday With Todd and we were able to press to wood and paper with no issues at all.
