The new town was going to be glorious. Here in this wasteland that had seen many battles, it was important to create defenses, while also ensuring there were enough shops and houses for the people. It was going to take some time and our initial focus was on building towers that would allow us to see invaders far into the distance. The towers would also allow us to protect ourselves, because in these lands it was a matter of Dragon vs Kingdom by Chris Backe from No Box Games. Where Else to Go

When you think about traveling to Peru, you most likely think about Machu Pichu in the Andes. But today's guest, Chris Backe, wants you to think about visiting the ruins and historical sites in Northern Peru for your next "where else to go" vacation. Chris is the blogger behind One Weird Globe, which explores the world's offbeat and bizarre destinations, and is the publisher of Choose a Way books, the tap-your-own-adventure guidebooks to real-life destinations. He's been seen in Atlas Obscura, Mental Floss, the Daily Mail, and dozens of other publications. Chris and his wife, a fellow traveler from Canada, have spent time living in Peru, and he shares what we've been missing in northern Peru. Chris says that northern Peru features an array of authentic, ancient, and well-preserved ruins from both pre-Inca and Inca civilizations. Machu Picchu, for all the attention it receives, ends up putting many worthy places in a big shadow. Offerings like the Huaca de la Luna (the temple of the moon) and Chan Chan (a UNESCO World Heritage) in Trujillo make for a pleasant stay – and having a beach town in Huanchaco only 20 minutes away is a nice bonus as well. Kuelap Fortress, one of the biggest stone fortresses remaining in the world, is located near Chachapoyas and is one of the most easily approached ruins in Peru. Chris has written about some of the other historical sites in this blog post. If you're ready for something more exotic, a few towns in Peru have "witches markets", selling potions and ingredients that look like they belong in a witches potion! There's also the Guinea pig breeding tour in Puno, the Museo del Cerebro (Brain Museum) in Lima, and a spectacular museum of 100+ cars (in photo above), an easy taxi ride from Lima. Besides his blog, you'll find Chris on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram. If you’re enjoying these podcasts, please take a minute to subscribe on iTunes. How many habits do you live by? Most of us are inundated with things we do without really thinking. Chris Backe sees life very much as an experiment where you question every option you have – including where you want to live. Since leaving Kentucky in 2008 Chris has lived in South Korea as an English teacher and over the last three years has taken to trialing life for 6 months at a time in a variety of places including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Khon Kaen, and Krabi in Thailand. He is currently settled in Medellin, Colombia where he will spend a few months before trying another Colombian destination then heading for Ecuador – and who knows where else! If you’d like to find out more about Chris and his social experiment plus check out his impressive range of books he has written on the countries he has visited check out his blog at www.oneweirdglobe.com What I learned from Chris’s interview: Life can be an experiment. 6 months in each place is ideal if you want to find out what a place has to offer but not find yourself in a rut. It depends on the size of the city/country that you choose however with some places (Seoul being a personal favorite of his) needing longer to see everything worth seeing. Renting furnished in Medellin can be a lot dearer than unfurnished. If you plan on staying more than 12 months then buying your own furniture is a good idea Facebook groups are one of the best sources of information before considering a move. Chris finds this to be far more reliable than any information he might pick up elsewhere (including the media). Old perceptions (like many people have of Colombia) seldom ring true.

Chris Backe left Kentucky for Korea, where he lived in Seoul and taught English as a way to create for himself an opportunity to make travel a bigger, more regular part of his day-to-day. Last year, he and his wife moved to Thailand -where they’ve been bouncing between cities and exploring as much as they can of a very popular country. But to make things interesting, Chris has this fascination with the WEIRD things he encounters on his  travels and he covers the beat of weird across Asia on his blog, One Weird Globe. In this session, we'll discuss why he’s choosing a life of travel, and how he does it — which includes what it took for him to get a job teaching English in Korea and manage his own classroom of children in a foreign country — along with what 'weird' means to him and his relationship to it, and how travel can help us redefine and become comfortable with the weirdness in all of us.  So, if weird’s your thing, let’s get weird. What We Cover: Chris left his job teaching computer classes at a library to teach english in Korea before eventually wanting even more, which led him to Thailand Good skills and experience to have to get your ESL certification and a job teaching English overseas How teaching English overseas can be a great way to teach English overseas How Chris got into weird things and how his definition of weird has changed by exposing him to increasingly weird things.
