Here's a quick rundown of the week's top stories. All should be well again soon as Poul Lemasters takes over the reins at Cincinnati School of Mortuary Science following Jack Lechner's resignation. Bio-Response gets a boost from 3 Boomerang Capital's cash infusion. A vertical cemetery in Australia can be seen as a one-upmanship in green burials. Parting Stone got this cool shoutout in the NY Post, but it also announced its 10,000th customer, which isn't quite a tipping point but still worth mentioning. Last fall, Harvey Lewis captured the international spotlight at Big's Backyard Ultra in rural Tennessee. The high school teacher broke a world record, running an astounding 450 miles in 108 hours—more than the distance from DC to Boston. But—I implore you—don't let his humility deceive you. Inside Harvey roams a myriad of animalistic tenacity ready to be unleashed. A beloved teacher at Cincinnati School for Creative and Performing Arts, Harvey redefines human capability with 27 years of ultra-running experience, 115 ultras, podium finishes at Badwater 135, and a five-time USA National 24-hour Team member. Today, we explore Big's, including Harvey's readiness to run through another night, his approach to sleep deprivation, spirit animals, transcendence, and mindset. Harvey guides us through his coach-less training and the motivations behind his extensive running feats, racing for the Brighton Center, a Kentucky non-profit supporting families. Additionally, Harvey's fiancée, Kelly, provides exclusive insights into his personality and kindness, sharing charming details like stopping for lightning bugs and hosting popsicle parties. She discusses her ultra-running experiences and participation in Netflix's Squid Game Challenge. I immensely admire Harvey. He embodies humility, champions gracefully, and exudes a delightful presence—a hero the world needs. Josh Breckinridge is a triple threat, a singer, dancer, and actor, and he excels at all three. He's best known for his standout roles on Broadway and appearances on hit TV shows the Blacklist, Bluebloods, and FBI. Currently, he's a part of the Apple Original Films live filming of the award-winning Broadway hit, Come From Away, and will rejoin the cast when it returns to Broadway this September. J. was living and working in New York City when the pandemic hit. As the shutdown stretched from days to weeks to months, he found himself alone in his apartment with restless, creative energy and a lot on his mind. So he picked up his ukulele and a writing pad and began to compose some songs. His passionate originals, expressive arrangements, emotional delivery, and fresh yet familiar melodies call to mind influences as wide-ranging as the classic R&B of Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and Smokey Robinson, and the current sounds of Bruno Mars, Michael Bublé, and John Legend. In our wide-ranging conversation, you'll hear how a production of the musical Annie changed the trajectory of Jay's life from troubled kid to focused, driven, musical theater performer. You'll also hear how his time at the Cincinnati School of the Arts prepared him for the competitive life as a performer, the kinds of relationships essential to have in show business, and the importance of mental health for performers. After listening to this episode, you'll want to check out J.'s videos to see this triple threat in action. Just head to my website, valeriedaysings.com/podcast, for more. Join Rush and Zapata for another fire podcast with comedian, writer and actor, Tyrone Hawkins. Tyrone Hawkins is a graduate of the world famous Cincinnati School for the Creative and Performing Arts. His major? Comedy! After a couple of bad record deals he realized becoming the next Tupac wasn't in the cards. Tyrone re-invented himself by studying the martial arts. While training endlessly to attain a fifth degree black-belt in Yoga, Tyrone Hawkins began his quest for truth. Searching for treasures in the dark places of his mind, through the sweat, and tears of past heart wrenching disappointments, he one day awakens to find peace, and true spiritual creaminess. On that day he held aloft his magic sword, and said "By the Power of Grey Skull... I have the POWER!" Once he had achieved enlightenment he knew it was time. Tyrone began this roller coaster ride of a stand-up comedy career in the Puget Sound in 2001. When it just wouldn't stop raining in Seattle, he moved back to his home town in 2003. It was there he crafted the stylish laid back joke telling persona that made him... The film offers a unique glimpse into the world of studio-based design education through the eyes of a group of students finishing their final design projects at Pratt Institute’s undergraduate architecture program. Ian premiered the film at the Newport Beach Film Festival just a few days before we sat down to record this conversation, so I appreciate that he took the time out of his busy schedule to speak with me here on the podcast. We discussed the film’s development, the state of architectural education, the crisis within our profession and we even proposed a few solutions.
