Read the Book: Peter Boghossian: 'A Manual for Creating Atheists' http://tinyurl.com/SE-PB-AMFCA Playlist of Danny http://tinyurl.com/PL-AM-SE-DANNY I unexpectedly ran into Danny again after just arriving to the trail. My equipment was not fully setup, and I was not intending to even formally interview Danny again, but before long it was clear that we were engaged in a friendly conversation about a variety of topics. You many notice that I deviated from SE many times during this talk, because I ended up telling Danny many things about my position on atheism and many other topics. Like Dr. Peter Boghossian has said, it''s important to adapt and meet people where they are at. Danny appeared to be ready for my views, so I decided to share those with him here. I also think many others can learn more about my motivations, positions, and goals when I conduct SE when they watch this encounter. I chose to not raise the camera all the way and instead keep our silhouettes in frame for the majority of the conversation, as many people have asked to see my body language during my talks. Danny is an intriguing individual and extremely honest with himself. Please let him know that there is a supportive, loving community waiting for people who are ready to discard their unsupported supernatural beliefs. Dedicated to Olivia and the next generation of Street Epistemology practitioners like her. Music: 'Close My Mouth' by Silent Partner provided by YouTube. Music provided by Chet Hovatter. Mistakes: It wasn't a hill or goat, but a mountain and a lamb. I probably shouldn't have laughed about the brutal comments people have left on Caleb's video. Caleb seems like a decent man who is simply very passionate about his beliefs. I'm fairly confident that deep down he is worried about non-believers and wants to help people. I should have asked Danny if he was holding a belief in prayer without evidence, in much the same way Caleb did not have evidence to support his beliefs. Perhaps next time. When Danny asked what I got out of doing these talks, I responded with what motivates me. I was determined to keep the discussion on faith, even though Maheep offered another reason for holding his belief (the longevity of the Hindu books and claims). Now that he has my card saved on his phone, I'm hopeful we will have a chance to talk under better circumstance. Music provided by Chet Hovatter. He uses both faith and the fact he was raised with the belief to have such a high degree of confidence. Near the end of the talk Maheep admits that, were he not raised in the belief and viewed it as an outsider, he would hold a much lower confidence. Although Johnny early on admits that—even if healing events ceased—he would still believe, I found it interesting that our later discussion on his ability to use faith to heal a young cancer patient revealed that his method for arriving at such a high degree of confidence was awfully similar to hope. Kayla was tabling for an on-campus Christian ministry group called Chi Alpha when she agreed to speak with me, and believes Jesus came to her a year ago during a religious event called 'Break Away'. Rather than discuss the reliability of faith during our initial talk, I instead decided to see if Kayla would commit to lowering her confidence from the 100 percent if that turned out to be the case. In essence, this was a discussion about a discussion. Although I searched for Kayla to see if she would like to talk with me again, I unfortunately never spotted her, nor did I receive any messages from her. I ran into the lead pastor of Kayla's group twenty days after this talk, and Kyle and I ended up having quite a discussion: https://youtu.be/Tkpz5btDdgM While I don't normally mention non-believing groups like the SSA (Secular Student Alliance) to my interlocutors, it seemed appropriate after Kayla implied that losing faith would "take away everything that I have". Music provided by Chet Hovatter. Mistakes: As usual, I should have spent more time building rapport with the students and Kayla at the start of the encounter. While our talk focused on the man's openness to legalizing marijuana, it quickly became a case study about the lengths a person will go in order to maintain a belief. I'd like to add a bit more context to my, "He is the antithesis of why I am out here, and he's also my motivation.", which appears around the 13:35 mark in the full version of the encounter. My purpose with Str_eet Epi_stem_ology is to encourage people to reflect on their beliefs, and if the methods they are using to arrive at their conclusions are unreliable, help them discover that. This approach demands that you are also willing to adjust your beliefs in the process. This overarching philosophy is baked into Str_eet Epi_stem_ology, and is what I referring to. While people who are honest and open to discussing the possibility that their beliefs could be mistaken are a joy to encounter, individuals who are absolutely certain that they are right, and won't even consider new information to revise their position are dangerous to the future of the human race. This realization motivates me to spend as much time as I do working on and promoting Str_eet Epi_stem_ology, because it seems like our best chance for helping people to move away from fundamentalism and towards reason and rationality. In this long exchange, we talk about the reliability of faith, and if it was found to be inconsistent, discuss how that discovery might impact the confidence of their God belief going forward. In the bonus footage, I was surprised to hear Sarah say that I probably could NOT use faith to conclude that a sports team would win the next hundred games. I was expecting her to say that faith WOULD be reliable, which is why I asked for clarification. Will places himself around the 99 percent mark on the confidence in his belief that Jesus exists. After some questioning, it became apparent that Will's high degree of confidence would be lowered drastically if he was unable to employ special, or dramatic, faith. Regarding the testability of faith, I felt that we were talking past each other until I introduced to shopping list example (the same example used on my second talk with Austin). It's not the perfect metaphor, but it seemed to clarify things. These days I prefer not to use the word "falsifiable" (because it is commonly confused as saying their belief is not true), but since Will brings it up, I used it here. Perhaps the talk did help them better understand that faith was not as reliable as they had previously thought before our talk. Music provided by Chet Hovatter. Other than briefly spotting him while talking with the leader of his on-campus ministry, I never ran into him again. On 26 April 2016 I woke up to a message via Twitter from Ryan saying, "Hello, you interviewed me at UTSA a while ago when I was a Christian! Thanks for that!". We connected and then met at a quiet park to conduct this interview on 6 May 2016. (click the link above to find a Playlist of all my encounters with Ryan) While our first talk seemed to be a catalyst in Ryan's journey from belief to non-belief, the subsequent resources he discovered from pioneers in the atheist community (e.g., Dawkins, Penn & Teller, Nye, Hitchens, etc.), as well as the non-believing colleagues he encountered in his daily life, must not be discounted. I stand in awe of Ryan's bravery and perseverance to discover truth through skepticism. Ryan and I both agreed to dedicate this video to Dr. Richard Dawkins. In the hope of steering this state of affairs in a more productive direction, Zach Goldberg—an avid follower and supporter of the r/ex-muslim support group—sought to introduce the community to Street Epistemology. With his proposal garnering much interest—if not glowing approval—from fellow members, Zach proceeded to solicit questions that would later be read and answered during a live Blab. It should be noted that we originally had a former Muslim scheduled to direct the discussion, but he become unreachable. Attempts to find a suitable replacement before the Blab were unsuccessful. If we conduct another Blab like this, we will work harder to find an ex-muslim facilitator that can readily speak to the experiences of fellow apostates. Read the Book: Peter Boghossian: 'A Manual for Creating Atheists' http://tinyurl.com/SE-PB-AMFCA Yvette is 80 percent sure that a God of living energy sends signals to communicate important guidance which she can either choose to accept or ignore before making a decision. I really enjoyed this talk because it was more of a back-and-forth conversation and less of an interview. I'm optimistic that I will eventually run into Yvette again so that we can continue examining the reliability of her belief system. As you can see from the blurring, I had to make a few edits to the footage, including a few censor beeps at the end of the talk to protect the interlocutors that were reluctant to disclose their lack of belief on camera. Note: I ran into Yvette in the parking lot a few days after this chat occurred. While our brief, second chat was not filmed, she expressed concern over the viewer comments that might be posted after watching several of my videos with different interlocutors. It did not occur to me at the time (or I would have suggested it to her) that I have the ability to disable comments on specific videos. Disabling comments on videos is not something that I prefer to do (particularly when an interlocutor pushes back and challenges my motivations [something I am sure viewers would love to weigh in on!]), but I will honor her request if it comes to that. In between traveling, bad weather, and other commitments, I returned to the trail several times since our second discussion in the parking lot, hoping to run into Yvette and offer her the option to have the video comments disabled, but that was unsuccessful (one of the reasons why this video was not released much sooner). When/if I do run into Yvette again (or she decides to email me) there is a chance she may opt to have the comments disabled on this video, to which I will comply. Thank you for your understanding in advance of this potential outcome. After watching this video, please free to offer Yvette some words of encouragement, as there is a good chance she will one day see this video and read the comments. Music provided by Chet Hovatter. I think it was a bit risky to ask how approaching things "with an open heart" are any different than simply being gullible. But Tristina seemed to roll with it, and it probably helped that we both worked together to forge a definition of that word. Tristina emailed me a few hours after this talk to say she enjoyed the talk and spent time time thinking about it, including getting a better idea of the difference between gullibility and having an open heart. I'm eager to have another opportunity to meet with her (preferably, on camera) to explore the reasons for her high level of confidence. Music provided by Chet Hovatter. Mistakes: I should have spent more time building rapport at the outset. This would have probably helped Tristina be more comfortable with the discussion.
