WTF is "web3 music"? In this episode we're joined by Dan Fowler, Director of Open Source Projects at web3 music incubator HIFI Labs, and a man with deep experience working at where crypto, web3 and music meet. Joe Sparrow asks Dan the stupid questions so that we can all find out what web3 music is, and what it will mean for the music industry. Most of us now have a surface understanding of NFTs and web3 stuff, but what is it exactly that classes a song as “web3 Music”, what does a web3 music industry look like, and how is web3 music different to the music we are used to? Dan – who has worked on blockchain music projects for Jaak, ICE, PRS For Music, and now HIFI Labs – gamely agreed to explain what it all means, how bit works, and who can use it to good effect. New money is pouring into the music industry: giant alternative asset management companies like Blackstone and KKR, are partnering with the likes of Hipgnosis and BMG to purchase music catalogue at great expense. But... why? Are they suddenly interested in buying some cool rock songs for some reason? Have they run out of other places to invest money in times of very low interest rates? Or have they spotted that music is undervalued? Music Ally's Joe Sparrow chats to journalist and analyst David Turner of music industry newsletter Penny Fractions, and he talks in depth about why on earth are these companies are suddenly pouring billions of dollars into music. David has some fascinating theories, and brings insight that has resulted from years of his own research. Penny Fractions: https://pennyfractions.ghost.io (Plus, a fishy world record) BTW – if you are interested in this topic, be sure to check out Focus Episode #38 (one of our most popular podcasts of 2021) where I discussed investments into music rights with music-tech strategist Dan Fowler, and how these giant investments could eventually buy enough catalogue to challenge traditional publishers.

Private equity funds and firms like Hipgnosis are scooping up music catalogues. And 60% of Hipgnosis's expensively-purchased catalogue of music is over ten years old, with only 2.5% under 3 years old. Will major publishers and labels be drawn into a bidding war over copyrights, and will new artists suffer as a result? Music-tech strategist Dan Fowler recently wrote a fascinating article called “The Changing Landscape of Music Publishing” which aimed to figure out what the impact of the big catalogue purchases of Hipgnosis and private equity funds like Blackstone, KKR, and Apollo would be on major publishers. In this podcast he explains how: Hipgnosis may not be overpaying for rights, and are in fact establishing a new market value, what it means when staggeringly wealthy firms that are focused on pure financial profit get involved in the music rights industry, what the possibly-worrying impact will be on new music and musicians, how it's only going to get harder for new musicians to make a living from streaming and royalties. As a Little Rock native and President of Cromwell Architects Engineers, Dan Fowler is passionate about community as he wants Central Arkansas to be a great place to live, work and raise a family for future generations. Fowler and Cromwell have been instrumental in the evolution of East Village, one of Little Rock's most unique and interesting neighborhoods. “The thing that attracted us the most to the neighborhood was the fact that it's got a real fabric and a real history that makes it unique,” he said. “Our vision and our goal was to not destroy that or alter it in a way that would materially change that.” The East Village has come a long way since Fowler joined the first ever episode of The Ghidotti Podcast in July of 2017. Tune into our latest episode as he and host Natalie Ghidotti discuss the growth in recent years, challenges the Cromwell team has faced along the way and what's on the horizon.
“We walk through life together with people who’ve been dealt a difficult hand,” explained Dan Fowler. It was such a simple thing, so humbly stated, it stopped podcast host, Laura, in her tracks! This simple sentence personifies who Dan Fowler is, how he thinks about and cares for people, and how and why he’s building his business, Reunion Shoes, in New Orleans. Reunion Shoes happens to make and decorate (for lack of a better description of the artwork his team sends into the world) simple canvas sneakers. That’s the outer expression of what’s going on. Inside, however, lives are changing. Dan is working under the umbrella of the Restoration Initiative, a non-profit incubator, providing space and support for small businesses committed to creating social good before other, more common business goals. Specifically, he’s working to support people who don’t live in traditional housing, who need access to certain kinds of support services (drug and alcohol rehab, counseling, medical care, and faith support, just to name a few). The idea is to meet the needs of people – as they define them, rather than having services pushed upon them – and support them as they create the life they desire, learning to become self-sufficient, building dignity and respect along the way, and contributing to their communities in new ways. It’s a deep and heartfelt conversation that touches on the ideas of asking, “How can I help?” as opposed to assuming we already know what’s best for someone else. It’s about taking baby steps that grow into considerable waves of change in a neighborhood or community. And it’s the personification of creating something with a great deal of consideration and intention. If you thought your ideas were too insignificant to make a difference, I dare you to eavesdrop on this episode and walk away with that thought unchanged! Dan’s Bio Dan Fowler is the founder and director of Reunion Shoe Company, a social enterprise focused on hiring and supporting folks coming out of homelessness. He has worked in the homeless community in a variety of capacities, including advocacy, one-on-one ministry, and working alongside various systems of care. Dan graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Loyola University New Orleans. Dan grew up in Florida and has lived in New Orleans for the past 6 years. He loves tacos, old cars, and his wife, Audrey. Dan Fowler is known as "The Imagination Engineer" for his revolutionary techniques that shift a person's perception of their place in the world. In this episode, he will share clear insights into how to manifest the life of your dreams.

It has become something of a received wisdom within the present day that the mainstream media exist as the pinnacle of what is possible in sports journalism. Whilst it is not in our interest to reject this assumption, here at A Team of John O’Sheas we believe that some of the most perceptive insight regarding the top teams in the country comes from the fans themselves. In the course of this podcast series, we will be bringing together some of the most influential fans from across the Premier League to give you the low-down on the teams that they watch week in, week out. We’ll look back over the season just gone, try to get a handle on the transfer activity that rumbles on through the summer months, and look forwards to the next season which, as always, seems to creep up on us with ever increasing speed. In this episode, we find ourselves in a Northern town that has never before enjoyed Premier League experience. Which is not to say that Huddersfield Town has not pedigree: in the 1920s, they won the first division three times in a row – a record shared with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. It has been some time since Huddersfield were in the top division of English football though. Even as recently as the early 2000s, the Terriers had dropped into the fourth tier and were headed for administration. Things only started looking up for the club with the arrival of Dean Hoyle in 2009. After getting Huddersfield promoted into the Championship in 2012, Hoyle’s next stroke of genius was appointing German-American, David Wagner, as the head coach. It took him just 2 seasons to get the club into the Premier League, winning promotion in through a play off final victory over Jaap Stam’s Reading. So here we are: Huddersfield are the highest placed team from Yorkshire in the English league structure. But will it stay that way? Or will next season prove that it is becoming increasingly improbable that newly-promoted sides can survive the Premier League? Joining us today are two luminaries of Huddersfield Town fandom: Greg Marah and Dan Fowler. Greg is one of the founders of Thrice Champions, where football art meets the occasional blog and a monthly football podcast. With a background in journalism, Greg currently hosts the podcast and isn’t adverse in causing some debate on social media. Dan is a long suffering Town fan of over 25 years, and very occasional blogger on the business side of Huddersfield town at Thrice Champions. He moved from the North to London over 10 years ago but remains a season ticket holder and active away fan.
