Live from the Senior Living Innovation Forum's Fall Conference, Steve Moran sits down with entrepreneur and former public-company CEO Ben Lytle to rethink aging through the lens of human potential. They dig into why perspective is the beginning of wisdom, how the "tension of opposites" unlocks better decisions, and how communities can become places where older adults live their best lives and leave a legacy. Ben lays out practical plays: behavior-change ecosystems (beyond apps), incentive-aligned healthcare, gamified and personalized wellness, intergenerational engagement—and even AI "alter egos" that preserve residents' stories while supporting daily well-being. If you're building tomorrow's senior living, this conversation is your blueprint. They cover: Perspective > pessimism: By most measures we're in the best time in history; wisdom starts with context and proportion. Tension of opposites: Leaders who hold and integrate conflicting viewpoints create more innovative, workable solutions. Human potential as a value proposition: Market your community as a place to live your best life and leave a legacy. Legacy tech: Offer residents AI "alter egos" to capture stories, wisdom, and family history—and even support daily wellness checks. Behavior change needs an ecosystem: App + clinical endorsement + coaching + community = real, sustained health improvements. Gamified, personalized health: Give residents clear "optimal health scores," daily actions, and peer comparisons to drive engagement. Realignment of incentives: Pay providers for improving outcomes, not volume—primary care and aging services benefit first. Democratizing senior living: Use scalable tech and redesigned services to deliver quality experiences at a lower cost and to more people.
From social media and dynamic pricing to meme stocks and AI hype, gamification has taken over our lives—and a recent op-ed argues that it’s even spread into our economy, driven by Trump. Nate and Maria discuss the psychology behind the “casino economy” and why speculation and risk are so addicting. They talk about what it means when governments, businesses, and individuals lean into risk even as buffers against bad bets shrink—and why it’s easy not to object until it’s already too late. Trond Aas is CEO and Co-Founder of Attensi, a leader in AI-powered gamified simulation training. Trond shares his background spanning quantum physics, consulting and gaming. He explains how gamification grounded in behavioral science drives engagement which enhances initial and long-term learning especially for younger employees. Trond describes motivation as a critical success factor for sustainable upskilling. He discusses metrics to demonstrate return on investment in skills development and how to improve skills gap issues starting with cultivating a trust-based culture of learning KEY TAKEAWAYS [01:17] Trond starts studying quantum physics to explore fundamental questions about nature. [02:01] After doing research for his military service, Trond goes into industry seeking practical impact. [02:38] Trond joins McKinsey as a business school type experience before pursuing entrepreneurship. [03:10] Interest in games stems from early programming and creativity cultivated during university. [04:08] In gaming, Trond reveals how behavioral science is used to drive engagement and learning. [06:12] Tribal, team-based successes are key to stimulating successful collaboration online. [06:25] Fascination with learning and awareness of superficial gamification drives Attensi's founding. [07:44] Attensi applies science to drive motivation and behavior change with measurable results. [09:40] Correlating simulated behavior with real-world outcomes to track learning impact. [10:23] Measuring soft skills progress when observable behavior is hard to track. [12:10] As technology evolves rapidly, upskilling must be ongoing across high-competence industries. [12:50] Skill development tailored to specific job challenges is more effective than one-size-fits-all. [13:45] Self-motivated learners thrive, while others need help to develop the motivation that anchors learning. [14:47] Many Gen Zers lack key communication skills and may not recognize this development need. [15:49] Most learning programs fail on motivation, which must be addressed first to succeed. [16:22] Creating mastery experiences significantly increases learner motivation and outcomes. [15:15] Game-based learning builds confidence that translates into better real-world performance. [19:43] Companies underinvest in onboarding due to unclear ROI, hindering workforce readiness. [20:08] Trond emphasizes data, ROI, and clear impact as critical for better training investment decisions. [20:34] Attensi's research shows poor onboarding leads to lower confidence and performance. [23:42] Skill masking arises when employees hide learning gaps, often from lack of psychological safety. [24:18] Cultivating trust-based cultures is essential to reduce skill masking and promote learning. [25:48] Focusing on core skills for each role facilitates the shift to becoming a skills-first organization. [26:44] Skill-based organizations can start small and ensure programs drive skill improvements. [28:33] Maintaining skill use needs continuous feedback, clear expectations, and learning structures. [29:13] Organizations must define competencies to stand out and align training with competitive goals. [30:37] Tailoring programs to learner motivation and challenges supports effective skills development. IMMEDIATE ACTION TIP: Learning motivation and skills usage are cultivated through mastery. Help employees sense their achievement to encourage their enhanced performance and growth. RESOURCES Trond Aas on LinkedIn Attensi's website QUOTES "We can use these principles of games to drive engagement, drive interest, drive motivation—and then we should be able to impact real behaviors and measure that with data." "Most people experience poor onboarding and most people are convinced that it affects their work afterwards." "Skill masking is that people are actually hiding the challenges that they are having." "Are your people motivated? And if not, address that—that's what you need to address to be able to develop your organization." “When you are able to instill a feeling of mastery in people that has a huge effect on their motivation.” "A lot of people think that one [training] system or one approach will fit with all the different employees... and I think it needs to be a lot more nuanced than that."

Today He helps high-achieving professionals unlock energy, resilience, and clarity by reframing life not as a grind, but as a game worth playing.Through Fit Club, his coaching work, and challenges like Project 50, Matt shows how to build “characters” instead of chasing discipline, learn to step into the contest instead of avoiding stress, and design rules that create freedom instead of punishment. Sales legend and trainer Steve Gielda—co-founder of Ignite Selling—joins Samuel to break down what truly drives performance in medical device, pharma, biotech, and diagnostics. Steve traces his path from selling 3M copiers out of a van to leading life-sciences consulting with Neil Rackham (of SPIN Selling) and building Ignite's simulation-based, gamified training that accelerates pipelines and product launches. We get tactical fast: how today's top reps think strategically, map real stakeholders (beyond the “friendly” contacts), and use smarter questions that challenge clinical and business assumptions—not just needs. Steve explains when SPIN still shines, where Challenger-style questions raise the bar, and why role-playing strategy is as critical as role-playing the call. For frontline managers, Steve lays out the playbook: coach early in the pipeline, ask more than you tell, know when to sell vs. when to coach, and—yes—let your reps fail on safe calls so they learn to win without you. We dive into work ethic vs. knowledge, turning average reps into top performers, and the signals that a high producer is (or isn't) ready for leadership. If you want practical frameworks to sharpen your questioning, focus your account strategy, and elevate your team's coaching culture, this episode delivers candid insights you can apply on your very next call. When Open Intelligence Becomes EntertainmentThere was a time when intelligence was secret, locked away in dossiers and government vaults. Today, the cameras never stop. Data streams from satellites, drones, traffic cams, and smartphones. Open Source Intelligence—OSINT—once meant careful analysis of public data. Now it's something else. Intelligence has turned into entertainment. OSINT has become OSENT.Ukraine and Gaza have become live-streamed conflicts. No need for classified reports—just open Twitter, Telegram, TikTok. Drone footage shows tanks erupting. Satellite images reveal troop movements. Civilians post bombed streets. Algorithms boost the shocking, not the true. War looks like a video game. Explosions loop. The audience cheers or scrolls for the next clip.Gaza follows the same script, but with sharper emotions. Images—crying children, collapsing buildings—arrive packaged to provoke outrage or sympathy. Israel curates footage to defend itself; Hamas curates footage to condemn. NGOs, aid workers, journalists—they're part of the drama. Suffering is real, but it's edited, filtered, and fed as content.OSINT was once a tool for accountability. Now it's a genre. After shootings, Reddit sleuths hunt for clues, often ruining lives. True crime podcasts turn open data into serialized dramas. YouTube analysts dissect satellite images for millions. The thrill isn't in facts—it's in the chase. This shift is clear in domestic policing. Body and dash cam footage, often public, fuels an entire content economy. Cop pull-overs, high-speed chases, and arrests rack up millions of views. Audiences watch for adrenaline, not justice. Cops did this decades ago, but now the feed is endless and raw.Crash cams feed the same hunger. Russian dash cams pioneered it—every accident online, every near miss a viral moment. Road rage, four-way stop failures, cars flipping end-over-end—it's bingeable. Crashes, like explosions, need no context. They just need to play. Before TikTok, there was WorldStarHipHop. WorldStar made fights, street chaos, and viral humiliation daily consumption. Violence became shareable; suffering became a spectator sport. Now, Ring cameras bring that ethos to suburbia. Every porch is a set, every delivery a scene. Porch pirates get tackled, Amazon drivers toss packages, neighbors scream. Millions watch Ring compilations. Security becomes entertainment. The difference with OSENT is participation. The audience doesn't just watch; they investigate. They geolocate strikes, identify suspects, connect dots. Sometimes they expose truth. Sometimes they ruin lives. Gamified investigation is addictive. Solving online feels like detective work—until the wrong person goes viral.Platforms love OSENT. YouTube monetizes chases. TikTok pushes Ring footage. Twitter feeds on war clips. Telegram channels collect donations. OSINT may help governments, but OSENT prints cash. And when spectacle is monetized, truth bends. Context disappears. Footage is edited for impact, not accuracy. This is the problem with OSENT: the show never ends. Intelligence used to conclude. OSENT loops. There's always another clip, another explosion, another chase. Wars stream. Crimes trend. Investigations play live.OSINT was meant to reveal truth. OSENT reveals feeling. Gaza bleeds, Ukraine burns, and the world watches—scrolling, sharing, consuming. The suffering is real. The feed is endless.Open-source intelligence has become open-source entertainment. The cameras never stop, the curtain never falls, and the show goes on.

How do you turn GenAI excitement into real enterprise value—without leaving people behind? In this episode, Amir talks with Mike Urban, Chief Technology Operations Officer at Best Egg, about the overlooked muscle every company needs to build: change management. Mike shares how his team is navigating the real-world complexity of bringing GenAI into production across a highly regulated fintech org—while aligning control and risk teams as unexpected champions of innovation. If you're trying to move fast without breaking trust, this conversation is packed with lessons.Key Takeaways:Change management isn't a framework—it's a living process, just like the changes you're navigating.GenAI adoption starts with personalized enablement, not just tooling. Everyone has a different “light switch.”Risk and control functions can be powerful allies in innovation, not blockers—if brought in early.Gamified onboarding and grassroots advocacy can shift perception and accelerate adoption. The real value of GenAI isn't replacement—it's amplification. Think "thought partner," not "automation engine."Timestamped Highlights:00:47 – What Best Egg does and who they serve in the fintech landscape01:46 – Why traditional change management often fails in tech orgs07:42 – The GenAI learning curve: why every employee needs their own light switch moment10:18 – Risk and control teams as enablers of innovation (not roadblocks)12:39 – A clever GenAI onboarding experiment with Best Egg's control team17:01 – Framing GenAI as a productivity co-pilot, not a job replacer22:33 – Why GenAI's constant evolution might actually make it easier to adoptQuote of the Episode:“Every person has their own GenAI light switch—and once it's on, it doesn't turn off.”Call to Action:If this episode sparked new ideas for how your team can embrace GenAI more effectively, share it with a colleague or drop us a review. If you're struggling to keep people engaged and loyal in your product or business, check out my FREE gamification course to learn how to do just that: professorgame.com/freecommunity-web What happens when a perfectly balanced gamification system fails with users? Alireza Ranjbar Shourabi shares this shocking experience and unpacks how cultural nuances, hidden perceptions, and behavioral insights can make or break your engagement strategy. Starting in high school, Alireza used computers as a means to create and play games, first diving into programming and then exploring 2D and 3D art. Eventually, he discovered his true passion in game design, which sparked a deep curiosity about human behavior. With this newfound interest, he went for psychology, sociology, behavioral economics, and persuasive design, continually learning about motivational theories like Self-Determination Theory (SDT), Flow, and the Fogg Behavior Model, as well as every aspect of behavioral economics available. Soon enough, he realized these principles and insights could be applied outside of games as well. This revelation led him to design engagement solutions and gamified campaigns across a variety of fields, including Fintech, E-learning, E-health, Open Innovation, and even offline advertising. With experience in designing for diverse platforms and genres, Alireza has contributed to nearly every area of gamification and game development, from systems design, AI, and UX to marketing and monetization. However, economy and balance—the 'hidden' yet crucial elements of experience design—have always been his primary focus and specialty. For him, design is about striking a balance between a fun, fair player experience and sustainable monetization for a successful business. Above all, he views players as complex individuals with limitless dimensions, constantly seeking to understand and interpret the behavioral data collected from in-game interactions—and beyond. Rob is a host and consultant at Professor Game as well as an expert, international speaker and advocate for the use of gamification and games-based solutions, especially in education and learning. He's also a professor and workshop facilitator for the topics of the podcast and LEGO SERIOUS PLAY (LSP) for top higher education institutions that include EFMD, IE Business School and EBS among others in Europe, America and Asia. Trinity researchers have developed a new gamified mobile health (mHealth) app designed to help people with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) manage fatigue, one of the most common and debilitating symptoms of the disease. The research - led by Dr Guido Giunti, Adjunct Professor, School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin and Associate Professor of Digital Health at the University of Oulu, Finland, and researchers from the University of Oulu and Oulu University Hospital - evaluated the feasibility, usability, and impact of the app, named, More Stamina over a 60-day period. The study, which highlights the potential of the app, is published in the journal Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders today. "Fatigue is an invisible but life-altering symptom of MS," said Dr. Guido Giunti, Adjunct Professor, School of Medicine, Trinity College Dublin and leader of the More Stamina project. "Managing it requires more than just medication. More Stamina gives people the tools to understand their energy levels, take control of their day, and communicate their needs more effectively." The study followed 20 participants from Oulu University Hospital in Finland, who used the app daily for two months. Key Findings Users became more aware of their fatigue patterns, enabling them to plan their days more effectively. Higher engagement correlated with increased self-awareness, particularly among those with more severe fatigue. The app helped facilitate discussions with family members and healthcare providers, improving mutual understanding of fatigue's impact. Usability improved over time, though some users found data entry cognitively demanding, indicating areas for refinement. An Evidence-Driven Digital Health Solution More Stamina helps users track their daily activities and energy expenditure using "Stamina Credits", a gamified approach that visualizes energy use and helps users make informed decisions about their daily plans. Unlike many digital health solutions, More Stamina stands out for its research-driven approach at every stage, from identifying patient needs to design, prototyping, development, and testing. Each phase has been accompanied by peer-reviewed research, creating a transparent scientific trail for a mobile health solution. Bringing Digital Health into MS Care Fatigue affects up to 80% of MS patients and has a profound impact on their quality of life. Managing fatigue is challenging, as it involves physical, cognitive, and emotional factors, often leaving patients feeling exhausted, misunderstood, and unsupported. While digital health solutions have been increasingly proposed to help manage chronic conditions like MS, few have been rigorously evaluated to ensure their effectiveness and real-world impact. Neurologists at Oulu University Hospital emphasize the potential of such solutions in complementing traditional MS care. While the study confirmed that More Stamina is a feasible and acceptable tool, researchers emphasize that larger and longer-term studies are needed to evaluate its full clinical impact. The team is now exploring ways to integrate More Stamina into broader MS care strategies. Professor Minna Isomursu, University of Oulu, said: "Digital health solutions are only as good as their foundation. We worked with real patients and healthcare professionals from the start to build something truly useful. That is key to creating tools that people actually find useful in their daily lives." Empowering Patients and Strengthening Family Dialogue One of the unexpected yet powerful outcomes of the study was the role More Stamina played in facilitating conversations between MS patients and their families. Many participants reported that sharing their fatigue patterns with loved ones helped them feel understood and supported. More Stamina's development was not just about technology, it was about people. Active participation from patient representatives was key to ensuring that the app addressed real-life challenges. Are school-issued devices fueling children's screen addiction? The American Academy of Pediatrics sets screen-time standards, and we do our best to limit kids' time on devices, but what is happening in classrooms? Matt Todd, host of The Ranch Podcast, first realized the extent of the problem while volunteering in his son's first-grade classroom. After his son finished an assignment early, he was “rewarded” with free time on his school-issued Chromebook. With internet browsers and YouTube enabled for educational purposes, the options for entertainment are endless – along with the dangers that come with unsupervised browsing. Kids use their school Chromebooks and iPads during passing periods, at lunch, and even at home (after homework is done). Gamified education, once lauded as a solution to make learning more exciting, is actually fueling an addiction to devices and the behavioral problems that accompany it. Matt has been working with school board officials in Idaho, and he believes they are actively seeking solutions to this growing problem. In this episode, he shares his insights with Nicki of Scrolling 2 Death and explains how raising awareness and educating parents is the best way to make a difference for kids now. Firms face significant challenges in effectively training employees in adopting complex information systems, such as enterprise resource planning (ERP). Gamified training has emerged as a promising means to address these challenges. Despite this, prior research has paid little attention to the factors affecting the effective use of gamified training. This study aims to identify the determinants of the effective use of gamified training. Based on technology affordances, coping, and gamification literature, the study proposes that team-based gamification affordances (e.g., collaboration and competition affordances) affect coping responses (e.g., task-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance coping), leading to effective use. We utilized the ERP simulation game to empirically test the research model, employing a multi-study approach comprising two studies (Study 1 = 255 participants, Study 2 = 219 participants). Structural equation modeling was used for data analysis. Our results indicate that collaboration affordance significantly affects task-focused, emotion-focused, and avoidance coping. However, competition affordance influenced only task-focused coping. We also found that task-focused and emotion-focused coping affected effective use. This study contributes to IS literature by highlighting gamification affordances and coping responses as important predictors of effective use in gamified training, leading organizations and IS scholars to design impactful and engaging gamified training programs.

On this episode of Hustle and Flowchart, I had the honor of chatting with Marisa Murgatroyd, founder of Live Your Message and creator of the Experience Formula. Our conversation focused on how to create engaging and profitable online courses, integrating mission statements, and using gamification to enhance participant experience. Marisa's innovative strategies have helped many people achieve high success rates and complete their courses enthusiastically. She emphasizes integrating mission statements into course modules, setting clear goals and milestones, and using incentives to drive engagement. Marisa's methods ensure participants stay motivated through continuous rewards and structured frameworks. Joe Fier, your host, praises Marisa's creative approach and highlights the notable completion and success rates her programs achieve. Introduction to Marisa Murgatroyd Marisa Murgatroyd, the mastermind behind Live Your Message, has dedicated her career to creating experiential, transformational online courses. As the creator of the Experience Formula, she aims to keep users engaged through a framework that emphasizes continuous rewards and accomplishments. Joe Fier welcomes Marisa, noting it's been five years since her last appearance on the podcast. Integration of Mission Statements Marisa highlights the importance of embedding mission statements into every aspect of a course. By doing this, participants have a clear understanding of the goals and the value they will receive. For instance, the mission of her Experience Product Masterclass is to design, launch, and profit from experience products. This clear mission aligns every module and training session with the ultimate goal, ensuring that participants stay focused and motivated. Goal Setting and Milestones Setting specific, measurable goals is crucial in Marisa's programs. She structures her courses with clear milestones and offers rewards for achievements. Participants can earn a graduation bonus upon completing core modules and receive incentives through "launch wings," "money wings," and "proof wings." Marisa uses private Google Docs and milestone templates to help participants track their progress. Time-bound missions with countdown timers add a sense of urgency and help maintain engagement. Gamification and Engagement Turning learning into a game makes courses more exciting and ensures higher completion rates. Marisa uses gamification strategies like rewards and points to motivate participants. For example, her “Show Me the Money” training involves setting financial goals, and participants post these goals to a community page for visual reinforcement and community support. The constant wins from completing small tasks keep participants motivated and prevent them from feeling overwhelmed. Importance of Human Connection Marisa points out that consumers now expect more than just content; they seek human connections. Moving from broadcast-style deliveries to interactive, community-driven experiences enriches the learning journey. Course creators should focus on providing access to coaching, creators, and community support to meet these evolving expectations. Personal Touch in Automation While automation is useful for handling administrative tasks, Marisa believes that human interaction remains irreplaceable. She advocates for a balance between automation and personal touch to maintain customer loyalty and high course completion rates. Joe Fier emphasizes making experiences more engaging by adding personalized communication and direct interaction, effectively encouraging people to act. Storytelling in Learning and Marketing Stories play an essential role in both learning and marketing. Marisa discusses how incorporating stories into course content can aid in understanding and retention. She uses metaphors like "climbing Mount Everest" to break down complex learning stages, ensuring that participants grasp the material. Joe highlights storytelling as a powerful tool for branding, helping to create the right attitudes and beliefs necessary for personal change. MVP and Structured Course Creation Creating a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) helps avoid wasting resources. Marisa explains that testing the core solution with simple models ensures the concept works before advancing to more complex versions. Using metaphors like building a paper plane before creating a jet, Marisa illustrates the importance of gradual progress in course development. Key Takeaways and Conclusion Marisa Murgatroyd's insights on course creation are invaluable for anyone looking to build engaging and profitable online courses. By integrating mission statements, setting clear goals, using gamification, and maintaining human connection, course creators can significantly improve participant engagement and success rates. The blend of personal touch with automation, combined with effective storytelling and structured course creation, offers a comprehensive approach to delivering high-quality educational experiences.
