Welcome to the sixth and penultimate slice from my conversation with the Dragon Lady. As the longtime senior editor of Los Angeles magazine, Chris Nichols has accumulated more knowledge about this city than anyone else we know. As an author and frequent tour guide, he loves sharing his discoveries, which is why his newest book BowlaRama (Angel City Press, written with Adriene Biondo) is so much fun. Leonard and Jessie enjoy diving into the fad-like growth of bowling alleys in the Baby Boom years of the 1950s and early 1960s. (Leonard is still mourning the loss of his Pepsi Cola bowling team shirt.) Chris's enthusiasm for everything he does is positively infectious.

The Naked Texture Artist is a podcast where VFX/animation veterans have deep and honest conversations about their challenges and growth as working artists. The catastrophe has not been called off. Yet. The Hollywood strikes are resolved, supposedly. But obviously it will take time to rebuild what the drought has destroyed. Hiring has started again as a trickle here and there. But the whole “strikes are over and now everybody go back to work” was of course never going to materialise. So most people out there are still hurting. This period, in the VFX industry's history, has been a grim reminder that we are living in a house of cards. Many, if not all, artists have had to have some serious reflection on their career, and what their future will look like. You know I am a huge fan of Chris Nichols. Not only because of his texture work and his passion for our art and craft – but also because he is such a grounded yet thought-provoking person to speak to. This perfectly fits with the times we are living through. This episode, I count as my most personal yet. Listening, and re-listening to my conversation with Chris has brought a lot of aha-moments and paradigm shifts for me personally. We talk a lot about our experiences being artists, and how that relates to jobs, studios and even hiring other artists.I hope this can be as instructive and helpful for you too, as it has been for me.Do yourself a favour, please, and explore and support the amazing work Chris also does on the side:https://www.artstation.com/porkpiesamuraiAlso mentioned in this episode is https://www.allanmckay.com/podcast-list-page/and https://www.instagram.com/saltyanimators/The Naked Texture Artist is produced by Marque Pierre Sondergaard. In the picturesque expanse of Vermont, surrounded by rolling hills and pristine landscapes, Dave Chapman, the visionary founder of Long Wind Organic Farms, opens the gates to his journey into the realm of organic farming. In this special episode of the Health Science Podcast, hosted by Dr. Frank Sabatino, Dave shares the roots of Long Wind Farms, delves into the challenges of the organic food industry, and emphasizes the profound impact of soil health on our collective well-being. Growing Tomatoes and Grafting Innovation Long Wind Farms, having taken root in the early '80s, initially embraced a mixed vegetable approach before finding its niche in the cultivation of tomatoes. Dave shares the evolution of the farm's focus, emphasizing the unique grafting technique employed to create robust and resilient tomato specimens. It becomes evident that there is a very intricate dance between innovation and tradition on this organic haven. Tracing Organic Farming Origins The dialogue shifts to the historical roots of organic farming, with Dave illuminating the contributions of pioneers like Albert Howard and Rachel Carson. These luminaries laid the foundation for what we now recognize as organic agriculture. The conversation explores the political and cultural dynamics that fueled the growth of the organic movement, especially in the aftermath of significant events like the Vietnam War. Soil Health and Biodiversity The heart of organic farming beats in harmony with soil biodiversity, and Dave passionately advocates for the profound connection between healthy soil and nutrient-dense food. Scientific experiments, including those conducted by Chris Nichols at the Rodale Institute, are highlighted to underscore the pivotal role soil health plays in determining the genuine nutrient density of crops. As the election of 1952 approached, one thing seemed certain - a staunch isolationist, senator Robert Taft, was going to be the GOP's presidential nominee and the next president of the United States. Which was a major concern to anyone who feared the United States retreating back to its borders would invite Soviet conquest in the 50s just as it had invited Nazi conquest in the 30s. And so a plan was hatched to draft Eisenhower, the supreme commander of a fledgling NATO, to defeat Taft at home so the United States could defeat soviet influence abroad. The fate of the GOP, and the world, hung in the balance - would the later half of the 20th century be an isolationist one, or an international one?Historian Christopher Nichols, who is currently working on a book about the 1952 election, discusses the pivotal race that set the stage for the rest of the Cold War.Support the show

The Naked Texture Artist is a podcast where VFX/animation veterans have deep and honest conversations about their challenges and growth as working artists. These are grim times. More than half of the good people in the film industry are without work these days. If that includes you too, you are certainly not alone. Speak up and share your pain with your friends and former colleagues. We need some “comfort food for artists.” Chris Nichols and I continue our conversation, where we discuss many of the things working artists obsess over: burn out, coming up with new and believable looks for creatures that never existed in the real world and many more things. It is my hope that you will learn a lot of useful stuff, and maybe even be entertained for the next 48 minutes, so as to forget the difficult situation outside of our control.Do yourself a favour, please, and explore and support the amazing work Chris also does on the side:https://www.artstation.com/porkpiesamuraiThe Naked Texture Artist is produced by Marque Pierre Sondergaard.
