In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Aliza Hava. I was honored to have the incredibly talented singer songwriter, Aliza Hava (“aLEEza Hah-vuh”) on my show. We talk about music, trauma, healing, life, and the state of our world today. Most importantly, we talk about the role in which music can play in our lives to help heal past trauma and help us connect with each other and God. Ethereal. Enlightening. Medicine for the soul. Aliza Hava interlaces the elements; earth and sky, fire and water. Her transcendent voice is reminiscent of the mystical tone of Stevie Nicks, the raw soul of Janis Joplin, and the gritty wisdom of Brandi Carlile. With her award-winning infusion of folk, rock, pop, and soul, Aliza heals the tiny forgotten bits of ourselves while rekindling our memories, setting our feet on the path back home, and calling us to rise into our best versions of ourselves. Featured on the soundtrack of Sharon Stone's award-winning documentary, Femme: Women Healing the World, which also features performances by Annie Lennox, Yoko Ono, and Rickie Lee Jones, Hava is a recipient of the Human Spirit Award presented by the international organization Talent for Humanity. Her story is featured in their book along with seven other internationally acclaimed artist/activists. The original recording of her song RISE can be heard on Occupy this Album: 99 Songs for the 99% alongside artists such as Ani DiFranco, Jackson Browne, and Warren Haynes. Hava has always sought to relay a message of healing and hope in her music. Seeking solace from a difficult childhood, she turned to music at an early age. Self-taught on a twenty-dollar used guitar, she found inspiration in an old songbook she discovered in her parent's basement, 'Great Songs of the 60s.' Fire-lit, Hava immersed herself in the history of the 60s and early 70s. The music, culture, and activism helped her discover her calling for healing and ignited a drive to write songs that could change the world. While in university studying Music Therapy, Aliza developed a strong inclination towards student activism and discovered a natural gift for concert production and community organizing. She began producing charity concerts featuring local bands for campus organizations like Students for a Free Tibet, and led drum circles in the infamous “Tripping Fields” behind the college where some of the greatest names in music once played, including the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. With her college located just thirty miles from the town of Woodstock, Hava soaked up the culture and spirit that continued to permeate the region many decades later. She collaborated with local musicians, pulled all-nighters with her guitar around campfires, and earned herself the nickname, FireMusicFaerie. After college, Aliza began performing at and co-producing concerts at the United Nations headquarters in NYC. She earned a position as Chair of the UN International Day of Peace NGO Music Committee and went on to produce live concerts on six continents in partnership with over forty civic society, governmental, and environmental organizations. While living part-time in the Middle East, Hava represented UN-related peacebuilding initiatives and worked with Israeli and Palestinian musicians promoting peace and dialogue through music. She went on to produce the internationally live-streamed concert, Harmony in the Holy Land. This extraordinary event united Muslim, Christian, and Jewish musicians in a universal, musical prayer for peace from the heart of Jerusalem. Watching Palestinians and Israelis meet as strangers and part ways as friends, Aliza felt the reaffirmation of her calling to build bridges through the healing power of music. Hava has recently finished recording a new album at the iconic Revolver Recording Studios in Thousand Oaks, CA, produced by multi-platinum, Grammy winner Mikal Blue, who is best known for his work with Colbie Callait, Jason Mraz, and OneRepublic. The album is expected in Spring 2024 and features bassist Dean Dinning of Toad the Wet Sprocket as musical arranger and on bass/keys, and Gregg Bissonette (Ringo Starr, Santana) on drums. Her latest single, When the Children Cry, is a cover of White Lion's soulful ballad, and its message of peace is even more poignant today than it was when originally released in the late 80s. This song resonates through the generations with a message of healing and hope for the children of the world. In addition to writing her own music, Aliza collaborates with artists and songwriters and is a co-writer on Grammy-Award-winning artist Macy Gray's upcoming EP, produced by Mikal Blue. Throughout her journeys, Aliza has shared bills with world-class artists such as Dr. John, Michael Franti, Zac Brown Band, Rising Appalachia, and more. She has performed in the U.S., Canada, India, Morocco, Egypt, Italy, Australia, Jordan, Israel, and South Korea. With an inherent message of peace and universal love, Aliza considers her music and work a form of sacred activism. Her songs embody the power of music to uplift the mind, body, and soul while staying true to the ongoing practice of reclaiming our natural state. Welcome Friends! Thank you for joining us for a new episode of Crazy Women Country! In Today's Episode, I had the opportunity to meet with the talented twin sister duo of Jaye Madison! The Nashville-based, Texas-born twins, Jordan Skinner and Madison Skinner, are sisters and songwriters, a duality that nourishes an already intrinsic yin and yang that binds the duo both in music and in life. Originally from Lumberton, TX, a hop, skip, and a jump away from Janis Joplin's hometown of Port Arthur, their environment heavily influenced their sound. “Southern is a way of life, and we lived it surrounded by country, folk, and blues music from Elvis, Willie Nelson, Etta James, and The Judds,” says Jordan, “but we also have a love of classic rock, spending hours dancing in the living room to The Eagles, Heart, Chicago, Janis Joplin, Fleetwood Mac, and every 70s and 80s hit you can imagine.” They grew up singing, studying, and honing their vocal skills and performing in community theater, dreaming of a career in music one day, but they were, as the duo recalls, “songwriter late bloomers” who didn't even write their first song until they headed to Nashville after they were accepted into the Commercial Voice program at Belmont University. “When we got there, we quickly realized we'd have to sharpen our writing skills immensely if we wanted to do this for real,” says Jordan. Living in Nashville has propelled them forward in achieving their dream. Being surrounded by such talent forced them to either step up or give up and they weren't about to give up. “When you're in Nashville you're a songwriter and musician first,” says Madison. “No one asks you what your day job is even though everyone has one...and probably two others. There's a charming steeliness to the artists in town who have had to not only fight for opportunities but their individuality as writers and performers. It challenges you. It humbles you. It makes you face your ego.” You can hear all these musical influences and the experience of living in Nashville on Jaye Madison's upcoming trilogy of EP releases that make up MIRЯOR, which, as a whole concept, is their debut album. They recorded it at Revolver Recordings in Los Angeles with Grammy-Award-winning producer Mikal Blue (OneRepublic, Colbie Caillat, Jason Mraz), Co-producer Dean Dinning and Josh Daubin of Toad the Wet Sprocket, Michael Ward (Guitar) of The Wallflowers, and songwriter Dalton Cyr (Piano and Guitar). The totality of the EPs follows Jaye Madison on their real-life journey of self-discovery and self-reflection as they navigates life in their 20's. “Jordan's writing leans more towards the light side, mine leans towards the dark,” says Madison. “So together those sounds create soulful introspection that feels like a painting of realistic womanhood. Joy, sadness, anger - we cover it all.” They combine their favorite parts of folk, country, and classic rock into their own sound and create the perfect mixture of all the music they grew up with. “We write what we know, and what we know is who we are,” says Jordan. Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 1986. The band at the time consisted of vocalist/guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss, who stopped touring in 2017 and left the band in 2020. Guss was replaced by drummer Josh Daubin, who had been supporting them as their drummer on recent tours. They had chart success in the 1990s with singles that included "Walk on the Ocean," "All I Want," "Something's Always Wrong," "Fall Down," and "Good Intentions." The band broke up in 1998 to pursue other projects. Although re-united periodically for short tours. In December 2010, the band announced their official reunion as a full-time working band and started writing songs for their first studio album of new material. That album would become New Constellation, followed by The Architect of the Ruin. Toad the Wet Sprocket's most recent full-length album, Starting Now, was released on August 27, 2021. As a solo artist, Glen Phillips released Abulum in 2000. In 2004, he released a long-awaited collaboration with Nickel Creek under the Mutual Admiration Society. The self-titled album was recorded in 2000 and featured songs written by Phillips alone and collaborative efforts with Sean and Sara Watkins, released on Sugar Hill Records. In 2005, Phillips released the critically acclaimed Winter Pays For Summer. The album included the radio single "Duck and Cover," but Phillips and the label would part ways due to creative differences. A compilation of six outtakes from that album was published as an EP titled Unlucky 7, the first track ("The Hole") featured in the second episode of the AMC television series Breaking Bad. Phillips released his third proper solo album, Mr. Lemons, in the spring of 2006. In January 2008, it was reported by Billboard that a new supergroup had formed. The ensemble gathered in Jim Scott's recording studio, and by September 2008, the collective settled upon the name Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). In its octet configuration, WPA features Phillips, Sean Watkins (guitar), his sister Sara Watkins (fiddle), Benmont Tench (piano), Luke Bulla (fiddle), Greg Leisz (various), Pete Thomas (drums), and Davey Faragher (bass). The group also performs as a quintet featuring Phillips, Watkins, Bulla, and bassist Sebastian Steinberg. The results of the 2008 recording sessions were released as an album on September 15, 2009. Phillips has also completed an album with Neilson Hubbard and Garrison Starr under the band name, Plover, released on October 23, 2008. In 2009, Phillips was involved in the soundtrack of the film Imagine That. He covers The Beatles' song "I'll Follow the Sun." On April 5, 2018, Glen Phillips signed with Compass Records Group. His 2016 album, Swallowed by the New, was followed by There Is So Much Here in 2021. Keith & Geoff welcomed Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips to Thunderlove Studio and had a delightful conversation about, but not limited to, disco, hippies, and mental health. Go figure. Dean Dinning is the bassist for the band Toad the Wet Sprocket who emerged from Santa Barbara and made a name for themselves in the 1990's with the hits "All I Want" and "Walk on the Ocean". Three consecutive Gold or Platinum albums helped the band build a very loyal following that solidified itself when it raised 5x the goal amount for a Kickstarter campaign in 2013 to market their album New Constellation. “Dulcinea” by Toad the Wet Sprocket This fourth album by Toad the Wet Sprocket takes its name, “Dulcinea,” from Don Quixote's love interest in the Cervantes novel. “Toad the Wet Sprocket” was formed in 1986, and takes ITS name from a Monte Python sketch. Consisting of Glen Phillips on guitar and vocals, Todd Nichols on guitar, Dean Dinning on bass, and Randy Guss on drums, Toad the Wet Sprocket was one of the flagship bands of the alternative rock movement of the 90's. While the group broke up in 1998, they began limited tours in 2006, and returned to a full working band by 2011. Dulcinea has a great mix of songs with strong lyrics which tend toward the introspective and spiritual. “Fall Down” The biggest hit from the album. "When will we fall down?" “Inside” A deep cut from the album which highlights the harmonies of the group and great dynamics throughout the song. The band members met in their high school drama club. “Stupid” Another deep cut that scales down to the basics of the group. Guy sees girl, wants to impress her, feels stupid for making an assumption kind of thing. “Nanci” "I can't believe you - you bend your words like Yuri Gellar's spoons." This is a folksy track about meeting Nanci and Loretta. "No, I changed my mind - I'll take Nanci, for you Loretta's fine." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK: “I'll be there for You” by the Rembrandts The theme song from "Friends," which premiered in 1994. STAFF PICKS: “Flaming Heart” by the Meat Puppets Wayne cranks up the energy with his staff pick. With guitar licks reminiscent of Molly Hatchet, the Meat Puppets were around for many years before they settled into their sound which some have called "cow punk." “Streets of Philadelphia” by Bruce Springsteen Brian tones things down with this Grammy award-winning theme to the movie "Philadelphia," for which Tom Hanks won the Best Actor Oscar. “Spoonman” by Soundgarden And the volume cranks up again with Bruce's crunchy staff pick. This song propelled Soundgarden into mainstream popularity, and features Artis the Spoonman playing spoons. “Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm” by the Crash Test Dummies Rob's pick swings back to a mellow and surprisingly low vocal range song. LAUGH TRACK: “Brothers” by Yngwie Malmsteen. An instrumental neo-classical metal piece finishes us off this week.
