Muggsy Bogues remains the shortest player ever to play in the NBA, at 5-foot-3. Bogues stayed in the league for 14 years, most notably as the point guard for the exciting Charlotte Hornets teams of the 1990s that also starred Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Dell Curry. At age 57, he still lives in the Charlotte area today. We sat down in Bogues' home, inside a memorabilia room full of keepsakes from his career. We discussed Bogues' experience being shot as a child; the neighborhood recreation center Bogues says changed his life; and the former star's insistence that he really could dunk. In addition, we discussed Bogues playing himself in the movie Space Jam; his watching dumbstruck as Latrell Sprewell choked coach P.J. Carlesimo; and Bogues gives us the inside scoop on what Steph Curry was like as a child. Sports Legends of the Carolinas is hosted by Scott Fowler. It's produced by Jeff Siner and Kata Stevens. While Dell Curry is now known in public mostly for being the father of two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Steph Curry, he had his own stellar NBA career. Known for his three-point sharpshooting at a time when the NBA was far less enamored with that long-distance shot, the elder Curry had a 16-year NBA career that included 10 years as a player for the Hornets from 1988-98 -- the team's first 10 seasons. Curry earned the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award in 1994 and retired as the Charlotte Hornets' all-time leading scorer (a record that stood for 20-plus years before it was broken by Kemba Walker). He and Muggsy Bogues both came to the Hornets via the 1988 NBA expansion draft and quickly became fan favorites in Charlotte. Curry has served as the Charlotte Hornets' color analyst on the team's TV broadcasts since 2009. Now 59, Curry grew up in rural Virginia and has lived in Charlotte since his 2002 retirement from the NBA. He is the father of two current NBA players -- Steph and Seth -- and talks in this interview about the time Steph nearly quit basketball in frustration. We conducted this conversation in between sessions at a basketball camp Dell Curry has conducted for decades at Charlotte's Levine Jewish Community Center. Sports Legends of the Carolinas is hosted by Scott Fowler. It's produced by Loumay Alesali, Jeff Siner and Kata Stevens. Our interns on this production are Zoe Williams and Christina Silvestri. Happy Wine Wednesday! I am delighted to welcome back the brilliant, hilarious, and insightful Reverend Solomon Missouri to talk about the incredible second season of The Bear. I had a great time discussing the first season of The Bear with Solomon, so I was thrilled when he enthusiastically agreed to return to talk more about this show we love so very much. One of the reasons why The Bear resonated so much with me is because I often feel seen, attacked, or sometimes both by the writing for certain characters. So with that in mind, I asked Solomon to share the character beats that resonated most with him this season. We delve deeper into the character arcs by sharing the ones we enjoyed most. It should come as a surprise to no one that we both loved what the writers did with Richie this season. Of course we get into the standout episodes of the season - we spend a lot of time unpacking the parade of stars and stellar performances in the chaotic episode "Fishes." As always, the episode ends with the thirst segment in which our thoughts and reflections go from wholesome to lusty. In honor of Carmy's trip down memory lane with Claire, I asked Solomon who he would like to pitch a little woo to if he was gifted a time machine that would make all the beautiful people throughout history fair game for his affection. We also get into the fandom shipping wars. It's time for y'all to come home from war - your families miss you. We talk Carmy x Claire, Carmy x Syd, and Marcus x Syd. Shippers aren't going to get on the same page about Carmy's perfect mate, so I ask Solomon whether Ebra x Tina are the couple that perhaps the shippers could unite behind and finally find some peace.Thank you so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time! You can find everywhere Solomon is located on social media here. With extensive experience as both a medical and technology professional, Khizer Khaderi, MD, MPH, could be described as either a technology whiz who practices medicine or an ophthalmologist pursuing technology. In reality, he falls into a field all his own, combining what he knows about sports performance, vision, and advanced technology into a career that currently includes teaching, research, and leading an AI start-up (Vizzario).Dr. Khaderi is the clinical associate professor at the Bayers Eye Institute at Stanford University, founder and director of the Stanford Human Perception Laboratory and the Stanford Vision Performance Center, and faculty at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI. In this week's podcast, he speaks with host Sophia Pathai, MD, PhD about the potential for augmented reality, virtual reality, the metaverse, and Web3 in clinical care. But before all that, he talks about a career that started in his teens—he started medical school at 19 after earning his master's in public health. During his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Arizona, his research focused on vision performance in athletes.Working with the school's basketball team, which included soon-to-be-NBA-pro Dell Curry, he focused his research on how athletes perceive and what happens to their retinal ganglion cells as they do. His findings led him to launch a video game start-up centered on sports performance. When that didn't take off, his path returned to ophthalmology. Listen to the podcast today to hear Drs. Pathai and Khaderi discuss:· How Dr. Khaderi started the Stanford Human Perception Laboratory and what he's learning about virtual reality and visual perception.· The Vision Performance Index, a tool used to analyze vision-related data.· Exciting biomedical device developments on the horizon for 2023.· How Dr. Khaderi sees technology and medicine evolving – together – over the next few years.· His views on what the intersection of technology and medicine means for today's residents and medical students.· What lies ahead for Web3 and the metaverse in clinical settings. HAPPY WINE WEDNESDAY! This episode was a dream come true. I got to talk about one of the best shows of 2022 with the illustrious Reverend Solomon Missouri. Solomon is a Twitter pastor, play cousin, problem (his words, not mine), and preeminent marriage counselor to wayward athletes. I became acquainted with him thanks to his epic thread in which he cautioned Dell Curry about the current state of dating - they're pegging out here! Solomon joined me to discuss a show you should absolutely be watching - The Bear. Part 1 is all about the pilot episode with no spoilers and part 2 is a spoilery discussion in which we discuss Season 1 as a whole.Unfortunately, we had some audio issue with part 1. If you can't take the audio issues, here's the link to the start of part 2 of the discussion which sounds much better. It's right around the 2 hour mark if your podcast app doesn't support chapter links. Audio issues aside, I hope you enjoy this discussion. Solomon was an absolute delight!I love you for listening. A month before Steph Curry won his fourth NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors, his mom Sonya released a memoir detailing her journey from growing up in poverty in rural Virginia to becoming a first generation college graduate to raising three immensely gifted children with her now ex-husband, Dell Curry. Sonya opens up to Ashley and Lisa about what it's been like being on her own for the first time in 40 years. She shares insight on why she wrote Fierce Love, what she learned about herself in the process, and why she chose not to include her divorce in the book. We know you'll be as inspired as we were by this strong mother as she reveals her keys to finding joy, connecting with faith and rediscovering your purpose. Sonya's book is called Fierce Love: A Memoir of Family, Faith, and Purpose.
Coach Michael Fly shares his journey from growing up in Kentucky to becoming a NCAA Division I Head Coach at Florida Gulf Coast University. He got his first coaching experience under the living legend that is Happy Osbourne at Georgetown College during his undergraduate years at the University of Kentucky. From Georgetown College he moved onto the Charlotte Bobcats (now Charlotte Hornets) and worked under Michael Jordan and alongside the likes of Dell Curry, Phil Ford, Jeff Capel, and Bernie Bickerstaff. After spending a season in the NBA ranks he moved down to Tallahassee to serve as the Video Coordinator at Florida State under another legendary coach in Leonard Hamilton. Andy Enfield was named the Head Coach at FGCU in 2011 and Coach Fly moved to Fort Meyers to serve as one of his Assistant Coaches. As an Assistant Coach under Coach Enfield he was a part of six ASUN championship teams, including the 2013 team who reached the Sweet 16. When USC hired Coach Enfield he had the opportunity to join his coaching staff, but decided to stay and serve under newly named Head Coach, Joe Dooley. In 2018 when Coach Dooley returned to East Carolina, Michael Fly was promoted to Head Coach at Florida Gulf Coast University and spend four years as the helm. He led the Eagles to the third most wins in program history (22) and set program records for non-conference wins, three-pointers, three-point attempts, blocks per game and total blocks. Coach Fly also coached the ASUN Newcomer and Defensive Player of the Year in 2021-2022. Prior to the TBC postseason tournament FGCU made a coaching change, but Coach Fly stayed and coached his team, leading them to the 2nd Round. Coach Fly reunited with Coach Dennis Gates and multiple other former Leonard Hamilton disciples at Mizzou when he was named the Director of Scouting & Analytics in May of 2022. **Sponsored by FastModel** Be sure to check out FastModelSports.com and use the promo code "BOXSCORE" for 15% off your purchase. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/beyondtheboxscore/support

It's a special "retcon" episode this week, as we dig into both the original and revisionist histories of the NBA's Charlotte Hornets - with the first incarnation's most recognizable player, and the second iteration's most logical keeper-of-the-flame: Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues. Over a 14-year pro NBA career, Bogues ("Muggsy: My Life From a kid in the Projects to the Godfather of Small Ball") was best known for his ten standout seasons of on-court wizardry with the 1988 expansion version of the Hornets - which lit up the league in attendance (highest in the NBA for seven seasons, including an unprecedented string of 364 consecutive sellouts in the 22,500-seat Charlotte Coliseum [aka "The Hive"]); dynamic up-tempo style (featuring a bevy of budding stars like Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson, Glen Rice, and Dell Curry, as well as future Naismith Basketball Hall of Famers Robert Parish and Vlade Divac); and unique, ahead-of-their-time Alexander Julian-designed purple and teal uniforms. Bogues regales us with some of his most memorable moments from the OG Hornets - as well as other career highlights like: a rookie-of-the-year summer season with the 1987 USBL Rhode Island Gulls; two seasons of head coaching the WNBA Charlotte Sting; and stealing some scenes in the iconic 1996 film "Space Jam". And, of course, we debate the vagaries of the original Hornets team history in relation to the "revived" Charlotte franchise narrative - despite the club's move to New Orleans (now today's Pelicans) in 2002, and the subsequent expansion Bobcats' retroactive bending of the time-space continuum.
