In this episode I talk to Iain Innes about his season racing skimo in the ISMF World Cup series, before going on to chat about longer team races and our season finale in the iconic Trofeo Mezzalama race in the Monte Rosa region of the Pennine Alps.Iain raced for Team GB as a downhill skier for over ten years, before switching to more mountaineering-centred activities. This season he has lived out of his van in the alps, training full time as a skimo athlete. Whether racing the furiously-paced skimo sprint, putting in big elevation days to Chamonix summits or cross training on foot or by paraglider, he has had a long and busy season. Trofeo Mezzalama is an Italian high altitude ski mountaineering team race in which pairs traverse from Breuil-Cervinia to Gressoney-la-Trinite, crossing the Monte Rosa massif and reaching altitudes of over 4200m. Named after Italian military ski mountaineer Ottorino Mezzalama, the race was started in 1933 and is one of the oldest and best known skimo races in the world.Due to the altitude and terrain involved, it is difficult to get perfect conditions on race day. Thus we were delighted to be met with exactly that: even atop the 4225m Castor there was no wind, perfect visibility and sun, with good snow and well established tracks. El pabellón polideportivo de A Gándara será este domingo 27 de abril el escenario del mejor baile deportivo con la celebración de la 24ª edición del Trofeo Ciudad de Narón y del Campeonato Gallego de Latinos, una cita clave en el calendario autonómico que reunirá a más de 400 deportistas. El presidente del Club de Baile Deportivo Narón, Jesús Marcos, destaco esta mañana la importancia de esta competición tanto a nivel deportivo como cultural. La jornada arrancará a las 9:00 horas y contará con competiciones en diferentes modalidades como caribeños, danza coreográfica, single y standard latino, siendo el plato fuerte el Campeonato Gallego de Latinos. El jurado estará compuesto por siete jueces, tres procedentes de Portugal y cuatro del resto de España, lo que refuerza el carácter internacional y la calidad técnica del evento. Jesús Marcos agradeció el respaldo del Ayuntamiento de Narón, imprescindible para hacer realidad una edición más de esta prestigiosa competición. Por su parte, Santalla destacó el nivel de los participantes y el trabajo del club organizador, al que felicitó por sus logros recientes, al tiempo que deseó suerte a los representantes locales que competirán este domingo. Si te hablo de coches con motor central enseguida te imaginas coches deportivos de muchos cientos de caballos… y no siempre es así. Hemos hecho una selección de coches con motor central, con alguna excepción, la gran mayoría de ellos por debajo de los 140 CV… y en algunos casos... ¡ni siquiera son deportivos! Hay hasta una furgoneta… Si viste nuestro video titulado “Nuevo Porsche 911, ¡con motor central!” creo que ya quedó clara una cosa: La mejor solución para un superdeportivo con muchos caballos es sin duda el motor central. Por eso esta configuración se usa poco en coches que no sean deportivos y potentes… poco, sí, pero más de lo que piensas. Y te lo vamos a demostrar con nuestra selección de 12+1 coches en la que te diré el modelo y la potencia de su versión más alta. Y te contaremos que tal iban. Vamos con ello. 1. Fiat X1/9. 85 CV. Este diseño de 1972 a mí me parece precioso… y es que es de Bertone. Nació con motor de 1.290 cm3 y 75 CV y luego llegó la versión tope de gama con 1.498 cm3 y 85 CV. 2. Honda Beat. 64 CV. Este coche es muy especial, porque fue el último modelo aprobado por Soichiro Honda antes de fallecer en 1991. La fórmula de coche con motor central reducida a la mínima expresión. El motor era de 656 cm3 y 64 CV. 3. Matra Djet. 70 CV. Para muchos esta Matra, que iba a ser y fue brevemente un modelo de la Marca Bonnet, fue el primer deportivo de calle con motor central fabricado en serie… aunque fuese en series cortas. Con la marca Bonnet apareció en 1962. 4. Matra Simca Bagheera. 90 CV. Y de un Matra a otro, este con la particularidad de ser un tres plazas, pero no con el conductor en el centro. Este modelo se presentó en 1973 y ganó el premio “Limón de Plata” del ADAC al “Automóvil nuevo con peores defectos de fabrica”. 5. Nissan Vanette. 105 CV. ¡Una furgoneta! Pues sí. Os hablo del modelo aparecido en 1994, algo más refinado que la Vanette original y que en algunos mercados se llamó Nissan Vanette Serena y en otros, simplemente Nissan Serena. Llegó a tener motorizaciones de 105 CV, pero lo más habitual eran la Diesel del entorno de los 75 CV. Y las versiones altas de gama llegaron a tener ballestas de fibra… ¡que sofisticado! 6. Opel Speedster. 200 CV. He querido traer este modelo de 2001 a esta lista, aunque se pase de nuestro límite de potencia y llegue a los 200 CV. Pero es que este coche, además de bonito, iba muy, pero que muy bien. En España se pueden encontrar por poco más de 20.000 y me parecen una gran inversión. 7. Pontiac Fiero. 140 CV. Este Fiero nacido en 1984 tiene al menos dos peculiaridades muy reseñables. Una ser el primer deportivo americano con motor central fabricado en los USA. Segundo, al tener chasis que es una estructura de acero sobre la que se instalas paneles de fibra, es el modelo para hacer replicas cambiando simplemente esos paneles. 8. Porsche 914. 110 CV. Este modelo se vendió con motor de 6 cilindros como Porsche y con motor de 4 como VW que también andaba necesitada de un coupé y con éxito moderado. 9. Renault Spider. 150 CV. A pesar de su espectacular apariencia este modelo aparecido en 1996 contaba con el motor del Clio Williams de 150 CV. Sí, hubo una edición especial “Trofeo” de 180 CV pero que estaba destinada a la copa monomarca que, fiel a su tradición, organizó Renault. 10. Talbot Matra Murena. 142 CV. Este modelo, aparecido en 1980, se pasa por 2 CV el límite que había fijado… espero que no me lo tengáis en cuenta. Lo he puesto como Talbot, aunque también se vendió directamente como Matra… pero creo que más con la marca Talbot, cuando el grupo Peugeot la resucitó. 11. Toyota MR2. 147 CV. Un fijo de estas listas, aparecido en 1984 y que en su última generación sobrevivió hasta 2007. Un amigo mío periodista lo definió como un Fiat X1/9 “bien hecho” … y otro amigo mío periodista le argumentó que era “como un Fiat x1/9 pero más feo”. 12. Volkwswagen EA266. ¿CV? Pocos. He traído este modelo que es un prototipo nacido a finales de los años 60 con el propósito de sustituir al Escarabajo. ¿El motivo? Pues un diseño de Porsche, que mientras seguía -y sigue hasta el día de hoy- con su 911 con motor trasero, proponía a VW hacer un coche utilitario con motor central… ¡olé tus narices! 12+1. Toyota Aygo Crazy. 200 CV. Para incluir este coche me he saltado el orden alfabético y el “límite” fijado de 140 CV. Pero quería incluir este ejercicio tecnológico presentado en 2008 de un pequeño Aygo con motor central y 200 CV… no le he probado, pero me gustaría mucho… seguro que hace honor a su nombre y divertido debe de ser, y mucho.

Trofeo Kima is a unique technical race in the beautiful Val Masino region of Italy, in the rough granite mountains not far from Lake Como. While I don't usually devote episodes to organised races, I think Kima justifies an exception, especially this year's race - in which I had a fantastic racing experience with none other than Jack Kuenzle. Jack is now a recurring character on the podcast, having shown up in Episode 21 to beat my Tranter's Round record, and again in Episode 38 when I got it back! Join Jack and I as we delve into a race analysis of our head to head 'duel' at the front of the race. We both managed to come in under the previous Kilian Jornet record time of 6hr9mins, with myself winning in 6hr5mins. Beating Kilian's record was a first for me, although not for Jack who has already achieved this with his Bob Graham Round record in 2022. The race is dedicated to the memory of Pierangelo Marchetti, nickname "Kima", who was a local mountain guide who died in 1994 during a rescue mission. His sister started the race in 1995 in tribute to him.
