Wayne Simien is an NBA champion for the Miami Heat and two-time All-American and Big 12 Player of the Year for the Kansas Jayhawks. He currently serves as Associate Athletics Director of Strategic Engagement for KU. Wayne also works as a broadcaster for KU Men's and Women's basketball on ESPN+. Before joining Kansas athletics, Wayne spent 12 years in campus ministry. He and his wife Katie are the parents of five children. In this episode we discuss the following: Good things don't happen by accident. Whether good health, meaningful relationships, or a flourishing career, all of them require work. And often a coach who is guiding us and pushing us and a team that holds us accountable. Competitiveness is more about having the drive to prepare than having the desire to win.  From Bill Self Wayne learned the importance of toughness as a leadership trait. By making practice harder than the games, players develop resiliency and grit on a day-to-day basis. From Roy Williams Wayne learned that long term success comes from commitment to a system. Ten years after leaving KU, Roy was winning national championships at North Carolina built around his same system. And what an amazing lesson Wayne learned from Pat Riley. After winning the NBA championship with Hall of Famers, Shaq, Gary Payton, Alonzo Mourning, and Dwyane Wade, the first drill they did the next year was the basic three man weave.

Episode 301 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're back on the hardwood discussing one of the NBA's most exciting players of the 1990s, Larry Johnson. After an incredible high school career in Dallas, many believed Johnson was headed towards a superstar career at SMU. However, controversy regarding his SAT scores caused Johnson to enroll at Odessa College for his first two post-high school seasons.Johnson dominated the competition, and was the first player to ever win the NJCAA Player of the Year award twice! He then enrolled at UNLV and spent the next two seasons dominating the highest level of college basketball. In 1989-1990, he helped the Runnin' Rebels win the NCAA Title. In 1990-1991, Johnson won the Wooden & Naismith Awards and led his team to the Final Four.Blessed with an amazing combination of size, strength, agility and shooting ability, Johnson selected as the 1st Overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets.Johnson won the 1991-1992 NBA Rookie of the Year award, made the All-Star team in two of the next three seasons, helped establish the Hornets as a contender in the Eastern Conference and won a gold medal as part of “The Dream Team II” at the FIBA World Cup. He even popularized himself with his advertisements for Converse which featured him as “Grandmama!”Sadly, a back injury sustained during the 1993-1994 season limited Johnson through the rest of his career. Though he still was able to play at a high level as both a Small and Power Forward, he was not as dominant as he was projected to be after his first two seasons. In addition, a fallout with Alonzo Mourning and Charlotte led to his trade to the New York Knicks in 1996.Despite the injury and falling out with Charlotte, Johnson improved his outside game and even helped the Knicks make the NBA Finals in 1999.Watch, Subscribe & Comment on All Platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/nz/podcast/the-sports-experience-podcast-with-chris-quinn/id1529622054Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1esgBLz04MZYrTgYMk5DvaConnect with us on Instagram!Chris Quinn: https://www.instagram.com/cquinncomedy/Dominic DiTolla: https://www.instagram.com/ditolladominic/Ty Engle:https://www.instagram.com/ty_englestudio/S.E.P.: https://www.instagram.com/thesportsexperiencepodcast/If you enjoy our podcast, please help support us:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support#sportspodcast#comedypodcast#nba#basketball#unlvrunninrebels#charlottehornets#newyorkknicks

Tune in here to this Tuesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! Brett kicks off the program talking about the emotional and significant release of Eden Alexander, the longest-held hostage by Hamas. He expresses deep empathy for the victim’s family and the unimaginable anguish they endured. Brett emphasizes that holding civilians as ransom is a war crime and strongly denounces the October 7th attacks, describing them as targeted assaults on innocent people. He contrasts the values of Israel—where religious freedom thrives—with the oppressive, violent tactics of terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. We’re joined by Carson Luger, chairman of the St. Philip Neri Italian Festival, to talk about the Italian Festival starting this Thursday and going on through Saturday. The festival will have authentic Italian food, artisans, and entertainment. This will be the 28th annual festival with tens of thousands of visitors over the years. For great authentic Italian food, good company, and a family-friendly night out, check out the St. Philip Neri Italian Festival this Thursday through Saturday! Bo Thompson from Good Morning BT is also here for this Monday's episode of Crossing the Streams. Brett and Bo talk about the Charlotte Hornets’ chances in the NBA Draft Lottery and the potential impact of landing top prospect Cooper Flagg. Reflecting on the team’s history—from Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning to more recent highs with Kemba Walker—they discuss how securing the number one pick could reignite Charlotte’s basketball legacy. The conversation then pivots to politics, as they analyze reports that Donald Trump may acquire a luxury jet from Qatar. Bo shares insights from his interview with Mick Mulvaney, highlighting the complexities of retrofitting such an aircraft to presidential standards and speculating on Trump’s true intentions—whether to use it as Air Force One, a future museum centerpiece, or a negotiating chip with Boeing. Bo also shares what he and Beth have coming up Tuesday on Good Morning BT! Listen here for all of this and more on The Brett Winterble Show! Dikembe Mutombo was one of the most beloved basketball players on the planet. Today we are throwing it back to one of our all-time episodes with the humanitarian and Hall of Famer to remember the pure joy he brought to the game of basketball and beyond.Originally aired on August 25th, 2020 Mr. No-No-No Dikembe Mutombo has a story so unbelievable it has to be true. Hear how he went from the Congo to Georgetown on an academic scholarship. How coach John Thompson found him at school and invited him to practice with Alonzo Mourning's squad. And how Dikembe got extra reps playing intramural ball — yes, intramural ball, dunking on everyday students. We hear about his record-breaking first big game in college, his summer battles with Zo and Patrick Ewing, and his decision to go pro. You learn how Bill Russell shaped his mind. And why the story about Jordan dunking on Dik was seven years in the making — and how Mutombo never hears the end of it. We hear about just how cold the business of the NBA really is. Why Atlanta was heaven for a Black Congolese. And the story behind Adidas's Mt. Mutombo basketball shoe. Y'all be shaking your heads with amazement during this one. Many men tend to avoid doctors until injury or illness forces them into urgent care or the ER. Men are half as likely as women to visit the doctor for routine exams and preventive care, leaving them vulnerable to serious conditions like heart disease and cancer. Moreover, nearly 30% of men lack a primary care physician to manage their health. NBA Hall of Famer Alonzo Mourning went public earlier this year about his surgery after receiving a diagnosis of stage 3 prostate cancer. He encourages men to take control of their health and not be afraid to seek medical attention. Host:Jonathan Fialkow, M.D., Cardiologist, Chief Medical Executive of Population Health, Value and Primary Care at Baptist Health South Florida Guest: Alonzo Mourning, NBA Hall of Famer, World Championship with the Miami HEAT

We open the show this week with Rob’s stories about Bobbleheads that do NOT look like him, after his wife confused his bobblehead for Tony Parker, and how he often gets mistaken for Alonzo Mourning and Horace Grant when out in public at times. It takes us down a wild road about NBA bobbles and statues that don’t look anything like the guys they are modeled after, specifically the tribute to Shaq’s LA statue.   Rob gets into the D-Lo situation with the Lakers, and why JJ decided to bench him, and why he immediately started performing better coming off the bench. We also dive into the rumors that DeAngelo will be used to make a move for another big like Brooke Lopez, and Rob says that as long as AD is healthy he doesn’t think the Lakers need another big. And we try to figure out why AD continues to shy away from wearing goggles, after getting popped in the eye the other night.   Plus the Giannis versus Jaylen Brown saga this week was confusing to us, as Giannis said he doesn’t want to be anyone’s friend but then plays games with guys on the court and is somehow surprised that guys don’t find that cute. B-Dog also lays out the trade scenarios for Dame Lillard to go to the Lakers, which would be so lopsided it would be comical. And the Cavaliers are showing the league just how talented they are, from Donovan Mitchell, to Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, they are deep and talented and play great defense… all leading to an impressive, unbeaten start to the season. Plus the conversation about Chet Holmgren’s injury leads into Victor Wembanyama – “the Skinny Committee” – and whether guys who don’t carry much weight can still be offensive dominators in the NBA.   There is SO much great audio this week, including a check-in on the Draymond Green technical counter, audio from the cockpit during the Auburn basketball team fight that forced the plane to turn around this weekend, the hilarious and amazing Michelle Beadle Nuggets flub, and Pat McAfee leading the wild LSU fans into cursing on live TV! And the audio of Saints coach Darren Rizzi saying he clogged the toilet in the coach’s office on his first day takes us into a conversation about clogging the toilet at other people’s homes. We also give out a Big Shot of the Week to a Texas firefighter who pulled a toddler out of the second story window of a burning building, and play a classic round of Shot Clock that, as always, ends in controversy.
