Bomani Jones is joined by Tom Haberstroh of Yahoo Sports to discuss Luka Doncic's return to Dallas. Bo starts off the show by complimenting Tom having a framed Muggsy Bogues jersey hanging in the background (0:42) and how impactful Bogues is in the city of Charlotte. (2:27) They move on to Luka Doncic returning to Dallas for the first time after being traded and why Wednesday night's game was very tough on Anthony Davis. (6:25) Bo and Tom criticize Mavericks minority owner Mark Cuban for his demeanor at the game (26:45) and defend GM Nico Harrison saying he wasn't the only front office member complicit in the Luka Doncic trade. (32:28) They wrap up the show by saying why it wasn't surprising the Denver Nuggets fired head coach Michael Malone (40:00) and why Tom has Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as his NBA MVP over Nikola Jokić. What connects Seattle with Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, and Kenny G? How about the Melvins, Sleater-Kinney, and Foo Fighters? And Sir Mix-a-Lot, Macklemore, and Travis Thompson? If you don't know, KEXP DJ and musician Eva Walker and music writer Jake Uitti can tell you. Walker and Uitti have created a timeline of Seattle's music evolution through the lens of 101 songs spanning 80 years, the culmination of which, they say, creates a distinct “Seattle sound.” In their book, The Sound of Seattle, they highlight notable music and musicians who have ties with the Emerald city. It all begins in 1942 when Washington-born Bing Crosby records what will become the world's best selling single of all time, “White Christmas.” From there, Walker and Uitti explore multiple genres including jazz, rock, punk, riot grrrl, pop, rap, grunge, indie, emo, and more. This playlist, they believe, helped create Seattle's culture. With a foreword by Pearl Jam lead guitarist Mike McCready, The Sound of Seattle is organized by decade and includes interviews with Seattle legends like Heart's Nancy Wilson, as well as sidebars showcasing musical landmarks throughout the city. Seattle has many connections to music, and Walker and Uitti would argue that the city is shaped by them, and in turn, shape the people living in it. Eva Walker plays in the rock ‘n' roll band The Black Tones and is a DJ at KEXP. Born and raised in Seattle, Washington, she comes from a southern family of educators and music lovers. Her Louisiana-bred mother and grandparents have greatly influenced her music, work ethic, and manners. Eva believes in discovering, listening to, and experiencing music as much as possible. She has a deep love for Seattle music — from Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy James — and is an avid fan of classics, rediscoveries, and rare recordings. Jake Uitti's work has appeared in Vanity Fair, The Guardian, Interview, The Nation, The Athletic and many more publications. When not immersed mid-interview, Jake can be found in search of the city's best fried chicken or cheese pizza slice. He is the co-author of memoirs with NBA stars Muggsy Bogues, Earl Cureton and Michael Ray Richardson, and co-author of The Sound of Seattle: 101 Songs that Shaped a City with his radio DJ wife. The son of Ivy League professors, Jake grew up amidst tomes of French literature, but soulful meals, thoughtful music, thrilling sports, and compelling conversations are his true loves. Molly Sides is the dynamic frontwoman for the fiery all-female rock band Thunderpussy. A dancer, teacher, singer, songwriter and much more, she is incandescent. Jimmy James is one of the world's best guitar players. With a distinctive sound all his own, James has topped Billboard charts and is the consummate band leader in groups like The True Loves. Evan Flory-Barnes is a bassist and composer who has been creating and performing music since high school. He has worked with a wide range of artists and bands across various genres, performing across the U.S., Canada, Europe, and Africa. Marco Collins has discovered and helped break more bands than some radio stations. His name is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and he's a legend in his own time. Muggsy Bogues remains the shortest player ever to play in the NBA, at 5-foot-3. Bogues stayed in the league for 14 years, most notably as the point guard for the exciting Charlotte Hornets teams of the 1990s that also starred Larry Johnson, Alonzo Mourning and Dell Curry. At age 57, he still lives in the Charlotte area today. We sat down in Bogues' home, inside a memorabilia room full of keepsakes from his career. We discussed Bogues' experience being shot as a child; the neighborhood recreation center Bogues says changed his life; and the former star's insistence that he really could dunk. In addition, we discussed Bogues playing himself in the movie Space Jam; his watching dumbstruck as Latrell Sprewell choked coach P.J. Carlesimo; and Bogues gives us the inside scoop on what Steph Curry was like as a child. Sports Legends of the Carolinas is hosted by Scott Fowler. It's produced by Jeff Siner and Kata Stevens. While Dell Curry is now known in public mostly for being the father of two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Steph Curry, he had his own stellar NBA career. Known for his three-point sharpshooting at a time when the NBA was far less enamored with that long-distance shot, the elder Curry had a 16-year NBA career that included 10 years as a player for the Hornets from 1988-98 -- the team's first 10 seasons. Curry earned the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award in 1994 and retired as the Charlotte Hornets' all-time leading scorer (a record that stood for 20-plus years before it was broken by Kemba Walker). He and Muggsy Bogues both came to the Hornets via the 1988 NBA expansion draft and quickly became fan favorites in Charlotte. Curry has served as the Charlotte Hornets' color analyst on the team's TV broadcasts since 2009. Now 59, Curry grew up in rural Virginia and has lived in Charlotte since his 2002 retirement from the NBA. He is the father of two current NBA players -- Steph and Seth -- and talks in this interview about the time Steph nearly quit basketball in frustration. We conducted this conversation in between sessions at a basketball camp Dell Curry has conducted for decades at Charlotte's Levine Jewish Community Center. Sports Legends of the Carolinas is hosted by Scott Fowler. It's produced by Loumay Alesali, Jeff Siner and Kata Stevens. Our interns on this production are Zoe Williams and Christina Silvestri. The Hornets dropped a close one at home by a 116-114 final against Miami, but Terry Rozier passed Muggsy Bogues on the Hornets all-time scoring list, while Gordon Hayward cracked the top 250 all-time scoring list in NBA history. Sam Farber and Rob Longo break down the game, provide their silver-lining performances, and also discuss whether Terry or Gordon's milestone was more impressive than other.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Muggsy Bogues is still the shortest player in NBA history at 5'3”. And despite that, he played for 14 seasons in the NBA because of his athletic gifts in other areas. He was highly relatable to fans due to his short stature, and he had to overcome many obstacles just to be taken seriously by the NBA.CREDITSRick Loayza: Head researcher, writer, and voiceJacob Loayza: Editor, producer, and publisher MUSIC"Take Care" by Julian Avila"Horizons" by Roa SPORTS HISTORY NETWORKsportshistorynetwork.comsportshistorynetwork.com/podcasts/basketball-history-101/ FACEBOOKm.facebook.com/Basketball-History-101-103801581493027/ BUSINESS CONTACTbballhistory101@gmail.com

Today I talked to Earl Careton about his new book (co-authored with Jake Uitti), Earl the Twirl: My Life in Basketball (McFarland, 2023) Earl "The Twirl" Cureton was never a star player in the NBA, but then again, few people will ever be a celebrity athlete. Earl's story, instead, is about a life on the fringes of the league during its "Golden Era" of the '80s and '90s. A teammate of Julius Erving, Moses Malone, Michael Jordan, Charles Oakley, Muggsy Bogues, Hakeem Olajuwon, and more, Earl was a part of seven NBA teams in his twelve-season career. He won two championships during his career, first in 1983 with the Philadelphia 76ers, and then in 1994 with the Houston Rockets. And yet, as a professional basketball journeyman, every day was a struggle. Growing up in Detroit during race riots, Earl worked hard and became a standout player at the University of Detroit. A 6' 9" center in the pros, Earl battled with Karem Abdul-Jabbar in back-to-back NBA Finals. While many know the stories of big names like Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird, few understand the life of a player on the outskirts of the league. This is Earl's own story, a unique perspective on the trials of a journeyman player: non-guaranteed contracts, tryouts and cuts, playing overseas, coming back from injury, and the looming "right of first refusal." Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in 2020. Catch up with ALLISON INTERVIEWS Host, Allison Kugel: Follow on Instagram - @theallisonkugel Allison Interviews Blog - allisoninterviews.com Allison's Memoir, Journaling Fame: A memoir of a life unhinged and on the record In the latest installment of the Allison Interviews Podcast, journalist and host Allison Kugel talks with NBA legend Muggsy Bogues. With his unique ball handling skills and 44-inch vertical, while he never dunked in an NBA game, Muggsy could dunk a ball. After initially playing for the then Washington Bullets, the expansion draft that occurred when the NBA added teams for the 1988-89 season put Bogues where he belonged, with the Charlotte Hornets. He quickly became a fan favorite in Charlotte, North Carolina, especially with younger fans. He raised his points-per game average to ten in the 1992-93 season and helped lead the Hornets to their first ever appearance in the NBA playoffs. They made the playoffs again in 1995. In 1997 Muggsy Bogues led with an assist per turnover ratio of 4.34. He was traded to the Golden State Warriors early in the 1997-98 season, but not before becoming the Charlotte Hornets' all-time leader in both steals and assists, which he still holds today. Muggsy Bogues' storied career with the NBA lasted fourteen years, and to this day, he remains the shortest player to ever make it into the NBA. In 2014, Bogues was named as the Hornets Ambassador and Special Projects Advisor, a position he still serves today. Muggsy Bogues currently travels around the U.S. doing speaking engagements, and he and his daughter Brittney Bogues run the Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation. The Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation works to empower underserved youth and families to improve their quality of life through food security, access to education, and workforce development. The Foundation envisions equitable, thriving communities where everyone has a shot at a better life. The boys are back this week talking about the US Open, NBA Free Agency, MIchael Jordan selling the Hornets, Derek Jeter starting his broadcast career, answering viewer questions and bringing back the new segment, "Whose a Problem?". This one was a good one folks, you don't want to miss it!
To finish this week of people overcoming the odds to succeed in sports I wanted to highlight the great Muggsy Bogues, who played 14 years in the NBA despite being a mere 5'3”. That's short for your average person but for professional basketball players that is unheard of. And he was one of a kind and still is, because he is the shortest NBA player ever. And yet he wasn't just a cute story, Muggsy Bogues was an outstanding player. Nobody took care of the ball better than Muggsy and that's not my opinion, that's according to career statistics. Muggsy used his height to his advantage, hugging the ball close to the ground and using his incredible quickness in space to make the right pass. His “short”coming became his superpower. Growing up, Muggsy Bogues was always told he should do something else, anything besides basketball. He never acknowledged his many doubters except to prove them spectacularly wrong. Twenty years after receiving his first basketball as a toddler, he stood proud—at five-foot-three—as the starting point guard for the Charlotte Hornets in the NBA. From the East Baltimore playground courts where he earned his nickname by muggin' opponents for possession of the ball to Dunbar High School where he excelled alongside future NBA players, Bogues set the tone in his early years for the great heights he'd reach professionally. In Muggsy: My Life from a Kid in the Projects to the Godfather of Small Ball (Triumph, 2022), Bogues delves deep into his life and career, reflecting on legendary battles with Michael Jordan, John Stockton, and other generational stars of '80s and '90s hoops. He shares far-ranging anecdotes from playoff runs in Charlotte, filming Space Jam, and even watching a young Steph Curry grow up. Conversational and clear-sighted, this is a story of uncompromising vision and fleet-footed determination during a golden era for the NBA. Paul Knepper covered the Knicks for Bleacher Report.
