Being the closest Saturday to St. Patrick's Day this show was a celebration of Celtic music, with a lot of my favourite Irish artists to the fore. The new CD by Stephen Fearing was released yesterday, so this was a CiTR exclusive. Another exclusive at the end was a track recorded at The Rogue with Co. Clare fiddler Martin Hayes and the late Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill in 2017. These tunes were never recorded by the duo on any of their albums.
Martin Hayes is a world-renowned Irish fiddler from Feakle in east Clare, a place steeped in music and tradition. Martin is well known for his distinctive and soulful style of playing that blends traditional Irish music with innovative contemporary interpretations. He's an iconic figure in Irish music. From his early years winning multiple All-Ireland Fiddle Championships to his celebrated work with the late Dennis Cahill and The Gloaming, Martin is a man who brings great depth, expression and beauty to all that he does. It was a joy to have this chat with him and to hear about his early influences, his years in the US, his thoughts on mediation, music and culture, and his new life in Spain. This episode is also part of my Creative Souls of Clare podcast series, where you can find lots of great conversations with some of County Clare's leading creative lights. Martin Hayes is an internationally renowned Irish fiddler beloved for his expressive playing and his collaborations with many great musicians in different genres including Bill Frisell, Sting, Paul Simon and more recently Yo Yo Ma with the Silk Road Project. During this episode we spoke of his wonderful book Shared Notes, and he plays some beautiful music live (you can always use the timestamps if you're curious to jump to some music right away), but I encourage you to listen through the whole episode. Martin speaks eloquently about life, culture, friendship, identity, and staying true to what you value, and I hope this episode will thrill lovers of Irish music and bring new listeners to many of Martin's projects including The Common Ground Ensemble, The Gloaming, and many more. We talked about the loss and legacy of Dennis Cahill, how he met Thomas Bartlett, the rich depths of traditional music that Martin learned from the older generation, and the rhythm of life growing up on the farm in County Clare. Like all my episodes, this is available as both a video and a podcast on your favourite podcast platform, and the transcript is also linked:https://www.leahroseman.com/episodes/martin-hayes Martin's website: http://www.martinhayes.com/ During the episode we talked about the tribute to Dennis Cahill, which I hoped to link directly but can't find now. Martin talks with musician, historian and director of the Chicago School of Irish Music, Sean Cleland and champion Irish dancer, musician and founder of the O'Leary School of Irish Dance in New York, Niall O'Leary about the status of Irish music and Irish-American music today. Some notable deaths, Paddy Maloney, Mick Maloney (no relation) and on the Chicago scene Dennis Cahill and publican Tom Looney have left a void in the Irish music world. Will that void be filled and who will fill it? In addition, some fantastic Irish music is on hand to enjoy and prepare for that most glorious of days--Saint Patrick's Day. Ella is in Eat Clare to meet legendary musician Martin Hayes of the Gloaming to celebrate the life and work of Martin's musical colleague and friend Dennis Cahill.
The Irish music community lost a legend in Irish music. Dennis Cahill, a native of Chicago and one of the finest Irish guitarists in the world, passed away this past week. President Higgins says Cahill brought a "unique style to his guitar playing, while being deeply respectful of the essence of traditional Irish music". Cahill, along with his close friend and fellow musician, appeared on Windy City Irish Radio many years ago. In honor of Dennis and musical legacy, we pay tribute to Dennis Cahill. In addition, we feature music from We Banjo 3, Makem and Clancy, The Screaming Orphans, The Gloaming, Van Morrison and Mark Knopfler, Michael McDermott, The Saw Doctors, The Whileaways, Josh O'Keefe, Scythian, and the High Kings, Join us for one of the finest Irish hours in the land at www.windycityirishradio.com, live streamed at www.globalirishradio.com or on the air at 750AM WNDZ Chicago.

Tonight we celebrate Memorial Day and the legacy of the Irishman that led the cause to create it. General John A. Logan was a County Monaghan man who fought in the Mexican-American War, the Battle of Bull Run, and in the rotundas of the Illinois AND United States Senate. His proudest moment was issuing General Order No. 11, which established an annual day for the purpose of strewing flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of the comrades who died in defense of their country. Tune in as Tim and Mike pay tribute to those who have fallen with music from The Fureys, Bruce Springsteen, The Elders, and Kevin Flynn & The Avondale Ramblers. Thank you to all that have served and continue to serve in the Armed Forces. Memorial Day also means Irish Fest at Chicago Gaelic Park and the boys preview their 30th annual festival with songs from the bands you'll see this weekend including Chicago Reel, Screaming Orphans and The Fenians. Also featuring music from Rory Gallagher and The Gloaming (catch Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill this Saturday at the Old Town School of Folk Music.) Join us every Wednesday from 8PM to 9 PM on WSBC 1240 AM and check out the podcast at www.windycityirishradio.com
