James Delaney wants his public art in South Africa's biggest city to be more than a magnet for selfies and a delight for children. He's determined to have the vibrant metal sculptures change the mood of its gritty and sometimes dangerous neighborhoods. Over the past decade, artist James Delaney has designed more than 100 sculptures for The Wilds Park in Johannesburg. Authorities in Johannesburg have encouraged public art to improve safety and environmental conditions in the city of some 6 million people whose downtown has a reputation for crime and degradation. The Wilds is in the midst of Johannesburg's contrasts. One side of the park is bordered by the tree-lined Killarney suburb and affluent Houghton, home to Nelson Mandela during the final years of his presidency as the country's first Black leader. The other side borders a transition into the bustling, sometimes broken-down areas of Berea and Yeoville. “What I found at The Wilds that I spent a couple of years fixing the park and planting and weeding and restoring the infrastructure. We did a lot of work, and we couldn't get people to go back, and then I had this idea of making laser-cut steel sculptures. First of a set of 67 owls, and then later on the kudu and the giraffe, and then all those big pieces. And it's that which turned The Wilds around. Because those become draw cards and we live in an era now of the photograph. It's all about the photo that you take. Particularly if you could be in the photograph and next to something which is a landmark and public art is a landmark,” explains Delaney. “When you come upon a piece of art where you least expect it, it's like magic. You immediately smile, and you wonder, you ask questions: how did this happen? What's the story behind this? Who are the people who put this here?" says Johannesburg resident, Nadia Nicholaaspar. "It makes you think, well, somebody or a group of people love this place enough to put this effort into it, so I'm going to love it too. I'm going to be a little bit more respectful." You'll be hard pressed to find someone on the planet today who doesn't know about Minecraft. It's one of those games that has evolved to become much more than just a game but also a tool for creativity and for education, and today I'm speaking with James Delaney, Managing Director of Blockworks, one of the world's leading design groups for creating amazing environments and architectural designs using Minecraft.Blockworks recently worked with NRMA to create a map called Climate Warriors, which is available for download through Minecraft Marketplace for free. It was designed to teach kids aged 7-12 about sustainability and the impacts of natural disasters on Australian rural and regional areas. I speak with James about his own journey with Minecraft, how Blockworks has developed its expertise, and the importance of working on projects like Climate Warriors and how it elevates Minecraft as a medium. Blockworks is a true world leader in this space so it's a pleasure to talk to James about his company and its place in the evolution of Minecraft and using these kinds of platforms for engaging styles of education like this.I start by asking James to remember that very first time he opened up Minecraft. The great promise of the internet age is the freedom and accessibility of information. But some users are freer than others and censorship remains a problem in many countries. As such Reporters Without Borders have devised a rather ingenious workaround. James Delaney is the Managing Director at Blockworks who has been working with Reports Without Borders on this project.

I'm back! Well, partly. New episodes are on the way, and in the meantime I thought you might enjoy this excerpt from an interview I conducted a couple of years ago about professional Minecraft building (i.e., people getting paid to build elaborate maps and buildings). Most of what I discuss here with BlockWorks boss James Delaney (who at the time was an architecture student) didn't make the article, so I'm pleased to finally bring it out to the world. You can learn more about BlockWorks and what they do at blockworks.uk, and read the old article that I conducted this interview for at Rolling Stone. I also have a great book James put together called Beautiful Minecraft [Amazon, Official], which I highly recommend — it has lots of incredible Minecraft-made art and virtual architecture, plus several interesting essays.Support LudiphiliaLinks:Meet ‘Minecraft' Builders Who Craft Impossibly Detailed Virtual Worlds — It's enthralled an entire generation and sold more than 100 million copies, so perhaps it should come as no surprise that for some hyper-skilled players, the open-ended, Lego-like building game Minecraft has become an actual, money-earning occupation. Just as the most-talented Lego architects earn a living showing off their blocky creations, there's good money to be made by anyone with the skills to craft Minecraft‘s cube-shaped digital blocks into beautiful sculptures and stunning worlds.[Amazon] Beautiful Minecraft - Hardcover by James Delaney — With a bit of imagination and a heavy dose of artistic talent, Minecraft blocks can be used to build almost anything. But as you'll see, some artists are taking Minecraft building to a whole new level. Beautiful Minecraft is a compendium of stunning artwork built in Minecraft. Using millions of blocks and spending hundreds of hours, these artists have created floating steampunk cities, alien worlds, detailed classical sculptures, fantastical landscapes, architectural marvels, and more.[No Starch Press] Beautiful Minecraft by James Delaney — “A feast for the eyes, this book contains stunning images that will be an inspiration to players and admirers young and old.” —Forbes “Are video games art? Yes—this is proof.” —IGN's “Up at Noon”

James is a sufferer of depression, escapism and self sabotage - his words. He is big on social media, openly sharing his challenges or struggles that he is faced with and being a massive advocate for mens health - particularly mental health. For someone of his age, he definitely has a lot of wisdom and soul. Its only recently he has become curious about spirituality. Feeling into the benefits of a regular yoga and meditation practice has helped him overcome some obstacles and provided him with the compassion & love within. I have been watching and listening to Jame’s journey with a lot of admiration and feel incredibly inspired by his work. His commitment to talking openly about his struggles and sharing so willingly, is helping other men and people to reach out and talk about anxiety and depression. His goal is to encourage other men to reach out and feel comfortable to seeking the help they need. This is something that still needs a lot of encouragement and support amongst men - getting vulnerable.James has taken time out to enjoy the sweetness of life and commit to his self development journey. So much respect! I understand its not easy for many people to have time off work and focus on passion projects like I did over a year ago. This is a beautiful, raw and open interview that you will love - guarantee! You will be swept up by Jame’s personality, honesty and love for learning. You can follow James on Insta:www.instagram.com/journey2bvom/If you are suffering depression, anxiety or just need someone to talk to, please do not hesitate to reach out to:www.beyondblue.org.auwww.lifeline.org.au

Sarah and Jake from The Harold & Maudecast recap and review the Season Finale, Episode 8, of Taboo on FX starring Tom Hardy. It appears the true identity of Keyser Soze has been revealed and he's James Delaney. The season finale was bloody, explosive, and filled with good ol fashioned cursing -- bout time. James Delaney (Hardy) always 100 steps ahead of the audience, and Sir Stuart Strange The Company, orchestrated a brilliant getaway. Bound and awaiting trial in the Tower of London thanks to Sir Stuart Strange (Jonathan Pryce), Delaney played the cards he had be holding all along. But if you think everyone gets out of this episode alive, and they all sail off together on the high seas, think again and be prepared for some sadness. In the end, the season finale of Taboo delivers justice, and ties up all the loose ends in Season 1 with a promise for adventure in Season 2. Spoilers abound in our recap and review which we are giving an enthusiastic 9.5/10. For all of our Season 1 episode reviews of Taboo and more TV and film reviews visit www.thehmcnetwork.com

Welcome Renegade Nation it’s me Naughty Nicole and it’s time for another Renegade Review. Today we’re taking a look at Taboo, FX's bleak new period miniseries. Now I’m the first one to say I love me some Tom Hardy. Seriously, the guy could read the phone book and make it fucking intense. And I love me some British drama’s – dry old Downton Abbey, sign me up. So when I heard that FX was taking two of my favorite things and making a showcase for star Tom Hardy's unapologetic weirdness, I jumped with glee. The eccentric 39-year-old English actor plays James Delaney, a mysterious figure who returns to London in 1814 following the death of his father and spends most of the first episode brooding and intimidating people. Like a gloomy reality-show contestant, Delaney is not here to make friends. It doesn’t take long to realize that “Taboo,” the heavy-breathing new FX series set in Regency England, is going to be very ripe viewing. Rain on the moors, tubs of offal, bodies with coppers on the eyes, grave robbers, a funeral procession led by a dwarf — we’re talking the whole dark-gothic playbook. And that’s before we get to the half-sibling incest and the slave ship flashbacks and the Native American incantations. But the most self-consciously gloomy thing about “Taboo,” which begins its eight-episode run on Tuesday, is its star, Tom Hardy, who created the show with his father, Chips Hardy, and the writer and producer Steven Knight. As James Keziah Delaney, who returns to London from abroad to reclaim his family legacy, Mr. Hardy growls, rasps, glowers and, when Delaney is caught without an answer, makes a popping noise that resembles a grunt.
In this week's River Rants, "Taboo" fans theorize on James Keziah Delaney's secret motives, teach us about what submissives like from their dominants, and speculate on what happened to Anna Delaney. "Taboo" viewers also wrote about the blood bond between Horace, Zilpha, Anna and James Delaney. And they dug deep into who is helping the Americans in their attempts to capture the right to Nootka Sound. Hear what your fellow Tabooians are saying about the show, then share your thoughts by writing to hosts@shatontv.com!
