For the latest SWH! podcast Ali caught up with Gaelic poet Niall O'Gallagher to talk about his book of 'Selected Poems The Sounds Of Love - Fuaimean Gràidh', which Niall was kind enough to read from. The conversation touched upon translation - including trusting your translators - the process from the poet's point of view, the themes which run through the collection, viewing his older work through the prism of time, the importance of the title, and more. The two also discuss the tradition of Gaelic poetry, the other traditions which Niall draws from, and his inspirations, poetic or otherwise, to be found in his work. It was great talking to Niall who is not only a feted poet, but also a journalist and broadcaster who is steeped in both Gaelic and Scottish literature. Corina Galvin calls County Mayo in Ireland her home.   She's also been a New Yorker for almost three decades.  And she has accumulated a lot of frequent flyer miles along the way.  That's because her job in event planning and management puts her constantly up in the air, traveling all over the globe, meeting some significant influencers in the process.  This job, the only career of her working life, also allows her to divide her down time nicely between Ireland and New York, keeping her connections to her siblings, all in the west of Ireland, and her mother, in a very healthy place.  Thus, despite her long stint as an emigrant, she is not perceived as the one over in America by her loved ones at home.  She spends more time with her family than friends she has in Dublin and London can manage. But New York is very much her second home, a place where she has put down some serious community roots. In her day job she has met many famous people, and if you're famous you're an influencer these days. Corina is an influencer who is not famous, even among the Irish of New York.  That's because she exerts her positive influence much more quietly. Let's call her style 'quiet influencing'. Many do not know the pivotal role she has played in the inception and development of major Irish community organizations in New York.Which organizations? Have a listen and you'll find out. You'll also get to know that hers was a military family, something less common in Ireland than the US.  Her late father was a United Nations Peacekeeper, and her childhood included a Cyprus adventure when he was stationed there. Some links of note from Corina's story:Women With AmbitionManhattan GaelsNew York Irish CenterSolace HouseUN PeacekeepingThanks to Purple-Planet  for  Intro/Outro music, and to FreeSound for the sound FX, and some music too!  There's also some music from our previous centerpiece Niall O'Leary. Niall O'Leary is best known as a performer of Irish dance in the New York area, and further afield.  A lesser known fact about Niall is that he also has his own Manhattan-based architecture practice. The amazing thing about Niall is how he has managed to satisfy his innate need to create and design in these two very disparate disciplines.  To him there is barely a difference between them. Maybe every young person should be trained to think like Niall, so when they are asked what they want to be when they grow up, they'll transcend the usual labels and actually be able to distill what it is will actually make them happy!  Wouldn't that make for an interesting world?   And, case in point, Niall himself is a happy fellow, as anyone who knows him will attest.  He's also a gifted musician.Visit Niall's website at NiallOLeary.com.Niall's alma mater: University College Dublin. Thanks to Purple-Planet  for  Intro/Outro music, and to FreeSound for the sound FX, and some music too!  Likewise, a thanks to Niall for providing his music for this episode, including sounds of his dancing and spoon playing! What is up SharkNation! We made it to 100 episodes! Thanks to all our listeners and guests over the past 2 years, it's been a great experience and we hope to continue to deliver content that helps our audience to "Keep Moving Forward". On this special episode Luke and Mark sit down with Mark's business partner - Niall O'Kelly,Partner in Darwin Hawkins.  Mark and Niall started their finance recruitment business, Darwin Hawkins, just over 3 years ago and have built what they believe to be a lasting brand in the space. Niall, like Mark, is a qualified chartered accountant (training in PwC) and it was Niall that first suggested recruitment as a career path for Mark.  Key takeaways: 1. Entering a tried and tested industry, but do it your way, and do it well. This is perhaps a lesson that is lost on the millennial generation that look up to the Zucks and the Bezos' of the world and think they have to re-invent the wheel to be a success in business. The majority of successful businesses are built on the back of real life experience in an established industry. Niall and Mark learned the business by working at successful recruitment firm, this helped give them the know how and the network to go out on their own.  2. There is no perfect time to launch your business: Niall and Mark have weathered the initial covid storm and continue to grow the business. Timing is important but action trumps timing. Waiting around for perfect conditions is not the way to move forward.  3. Burn the boats - go all in: Lots of people start businesses as side hustles with the safety net of a corporate job - Niall and Mark went all in, leaving their secure jobs behind and grinding out the first 6 months in the face of adversity. With no way back - no boats to flee upon they were forced to build a lasting business that is now growing rapidly.  For more information on Niall: https://www.darwinhawkins.com/about/meet-the-team/ For feedback: Luke@shark.ie.

Keen listeners of the show might be looking for our discussion about the evolution of T20 cricket, but two brilliant semi-finals had us buzzing with excitement so we decided to jump on the mics again for this extra episode to look back at these great games and then look forward to the big dance. Emotions were running high, but Binksy remained gracious in defeat in the face of Lippy's celebrations as we discussed the Black Caps' impressive victory against England, which had a few eerie similarities to that memorable World Cup final in 2019. We talk about the outstanding knocks from Daryl Mitchell and Jimmy Neesham, the impact of Devon Conway's injury and whether match-up cricket has gone too far. Later in the show, Baldy attempts to claim underdog status for all Australians, despite Matthew Wade and Marcus Stoinis powering them across the line against Pakistan. Raj wants to know why David Warner walked off the field despite being not out and we discover that the secret to winning at cricket is to not play cricket. Of course, we finish with predictions, but these have now become so meaningless that they've morphed into a strange game of reverse psychology - good luck trying to decipher that nonsense. In a few days' time, we'll be back again to re-live the glory and heartbreak of the final, but while you are waiting please take the time to give us a like, follow, share or subscribe on all our channels (@toporderpod on https://twitter.com/Toporderpod (Twitter) and https://www.facebook.com/Toporderpod (Facebook), & @thetoporderpodcast on https://www.instagram.com/thetoporderpodcast/ (Instagram)) and a (5-Star!) review at your favourite podcast provider, or tell a friend to download. The T20 World Cup is the focus again this week with the semi-finalists now confirmed after New Zealand's win against Afghanistan booked them a date against England to compete for a place in the big dance. On the other side of the draw, the only unbeaten side left in the tournament, Pakistan, will face a resurgent David Warner and an Australian team who could well be hitting form at exactly the right time. Did the best four teams make the semi-finals? Can Australia and New Zealand upset the top seeds? Will the Black Caps make any changes? And will it be Babar Azam, Eoin Morgan, Aaron Finch or Kane Williamson holding the trophy aloft in just a few days' time? We'll be back again next week to re-live the knockout stages of the T20 World Cup and hopefully, with three runners in the race, at least one of us will be celebrating a famous victory. In the meantime, on Friday you'll see two more episodes drop into your podcast feed - our take on the evolution of T20 cricket as a format and what that means for the global game. A big topic and once we started talking we kept talking for a while, so the episode will release in two parts, both dropping on Friday afternoon New Zealand time. What is Up SharkNation! In this episode Luke and Mark chat with Ireland's Premier Caricaturist - Niall O'Loughlin (caricatures.ie). Widely regarded as one of the ‘best in the business' and the most well-known caricaturist in Ireland, Niall enjoys sell-out exhibitions and has appeared on numerous Radio and TV shows including the Saturday night and Late Late show and completed commissions for many well known celebrities from both Ireland and abroad. Mark has known Niall for many years and Niall was a mentor for Mark when Mark was breaking into the art business. They have stayed in touch, had numerous joint exhibitions, and in this episode Luke and Mark talk to Niall about his career path and building a successful art business in Ireland. Key takeaways:  1. Improve constantly: Niall mentions repeatedly during the podcast that constant improvement is the best way to stay relevant and growing as an artist and as business person. Warning... Mark and Niall get quite technical!  2. You'll have to take risks: Niall talks about leaving a steady job to pursue being an Artist full time. Through trial and error he developed a niche in weddings services and this is still the foundation of Niall's business today. 3. Talent is not enough - you need exposure: The Late Late Show is the biggest talk show on Irish TV - after Niall was featured here his business took off. You need to get seen and come up with creative ways to reach new audiences.  4. Know what pays the bills: Niall enjoys all different kinds of painting but he focuses on caricatures as the core part of his business.  For more info on Niall: caricatures.ie For feedback: Luke@shark.ie

The T20 World Cup has reached the Super 12 stage and there's been some cracking games already. We start with a shout out to Namibia and Scotland for their superb efforts during the group stage, before reminding ourselves that we've pretty much got every prediction wrong so far in the tournament. That hasn't mattered a lick, though, because the cricket has been fascinating and there's a huge week ahead. England smashed the West Indies, Pakistan beat India by 10 wickets, Australia sneaked over the line against South Africa and Lippy's nervous about a massive week for the Black Caps that could define their success or otherwise at this World Cup. We hit on a few key questions for the remainder of the tournament: How will the pitches change the way the games are played? Will this be the World Cup of the likes of Babar Azam, Virat Kohli, Steve Smith and Kane Williamson, rather than the out and out power hitters? Is being in the 'Group of Death' actually a good thing? And will any of our predictions come true? Plus there's a quick preview of the bidding process for the IPL teams (since recording, we've learned the teams will be based in Lucknow and Ahmedabad and sold for a LOT of money), the Old Trafford Test has become the Edgbaston Test and there's a quick round up of impressive Kiwis at the WBBL and during the first round of the Plunket Shield. Of course we'll be back again next week with more T20 World Cup coverage, but also look out for another episode of our Men's Test Cricket Hall of Fame in the coming days - this one got very spicy! Eighteen months ago it was hard to imagine we'd have the final of the IPL and the opening games of a T20 World Cup within the same week, but in this new-normal world that's exactly what happened. We talk the excellent turnaround from CSK, led by Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni, who powered to victory via the bats of Faf du Plessis, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Moeen Ali, and an excellent campaign from the full squad. There's also plenty of love for KKR and their Kiwi contingent for the way they stormed into the final. Speaking of Faf du Plessis, we discuss his omission from the South African T20 World Cup squad, as well as Imran Tahir and Chris Morris, and debate whether the West Indies should have made an exception for Sunil Narine. Seán Cleland is an Irish fiddle player, Irish music teacher, adjudicator, collaborator, producer and executive director of the Irish Music School of Chicago, a non-profit traditional Irish music, language, song and dance school, which he founded in 2003.Seán grew up on the North side of Chicago in an Irish-American household.  He started classical violin lessons at age 7, and at age 9 his parents took him to one of the first North American concert tours of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, Ireland's national music organization. The performers that fall night in 1972 were the absolute best traditional musicians, singers and dancers from Ireland including Paddy Glackin, Paddy Ryan and Antoin MacGabhann. That night was so impactful that he decided right then and there that he would play the fiddle. His musical education through the 1970s was energized by such local legends as Liz Carroll, Michael Flatley and Jimmy Keane who were bursting out of Chicago onto the world stage.  Additionally, there were quite a few older Irish musicians who had emigrated to the United States in the 1950s and Sean was incredibly privileged to get to know them and to spend so much time listening to their music and stories.Niall O'Leary TCRG, ADCRG is from Dublin Ireland. A former All-Ireland and World Champion, he founded the Niall O'Leary School of Irish Dance in Dublin in 1995, in the New York metropoilitan area in 1996 and in Florida in 2007. The School is currently the largest in New York City.  Niall O'Leary performs regularly as a solo artist, in duet with Darrah Carr, and with various acts such as Natalie MacMaster,Cherish The Ladies, The Prodigals, The Andy Cooney Band, Atlantic Wave, The McCabes and Mick Moloney's Green Fields of America. He is in constant demand as a choreographer and master instructor and conducts regular workshops around the US, Canada, Ireland, Japan and Mexico. He has made a CD and an instructional video in Irish step dancing entitled 'Cuts from the Kitchen'. He was the founding chairman of Ull Mor CCE, the Manhattan branch of Comhaltas.Marty joins Seán and Niall to talk about the Kilgubbin Project, which is an ongoing exploration of Irish music, pushing the boundaries of what Irish music means, and plumbing the depths of appreciation and love for it as well.

One Test Wonders

In this episode we speak with Ireland wicketkeeper-batsman Niall O'Brien - and it's an episode with a difference. All the other players we've spoken with were hopeful of long Test careers when they made their debuts but Niall is a bit different. A left-hander who played county cricket with Kent, Northamptonshire and Leicestershire for well over a decade, Niall first played for Ireland at under-17 level in 1999 and at that stage the idea of Test cricket for the country was not even a distant dream. However, a succession of impressive performances in ICC limited-over events and in the ICC Intercontinental Cup, the global first-class competition for international sides below Test status, pressed Ireland's case, and in 2018 they finally got the chance to play a match in the longest form of the game, against Pakistan at Malahide. Niall's professional career was very much in its final throes by then, but the prospect of playing in that match helped drive him on and he finally got his reward, becoming a member of the first playing eleven to take the field for his country in Test cricket. Niall not only talks extensively about the match in question in this podcast, a match that featured a brilliant hundred by his brother Kevin, but he puts it into the context of his career and Ireland's journey from nowhere to the very top table of the sport.
