Nature-based solutions are a key tool in solving environmental problems such as flooding. Rachel met with Dr Rebecca Wade from Abertay University, who is a big advocate for these solutions, to find out more about how they are actually implemented, and why they are so important. The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust's demonstration farm in Auchnerran near Logie Coldstone, is home to numerous species of wading birds, but has had significant issues in the past with nest predation from badgers and other animals. They are trialling an innovative new solution - specially designed cages to protect the nests from would-be predators. Mark met with researcher Max Wright to find out how successful this trial has been so far.The village of Kinnesswood near Kinross home to a very lively community of beekeepers. Stuart MacFarlane went along to find out more about how the community gained such an affinity for these pollinators.Capercaillie are one of our nations most beloved and yet endangered species, and during the breeding season rangers carry out regular patrols to try and prevent passers-by from disturbing the birds. Rachel joined a team from the Cairngorms National Park Authority for an early morning patrol. The Great Outdoors Coast to Coast Challenge has been running continuously for the last 45 years It is a non-competitive challenge encouraging walkers to plot and walk a route from West to East, connecting them with some of the amazing landscapes across the country. Mark met with several walkers as they near the end of their walk, to find out what attracted them to this challenge in the first place. The warm and dry weather across the country over the last few weeks has been welcomed by many. However, the impact on our rivers and fish has been very significant. Phil Sime and Morven Livingstone met with Director of Ness District Salmon Fisheries Board, Brian Shaw, to hear just how this dry spell has impacted the river. The Beach of Dreams Festival has been taking place across the UK for several weeks, emphasising the beauty, heritage, and possible futures of our coastlines. One of the most interesting projects has been taking place in Fife, and Rachel met with artist Julie Brook, who has spent several days on the coast there, building an ambitious tidal sculpture.

Trails for the Environment - The Trail Feathers Project, Emma Holgate & Douglas Carchrie - Trail Feathers ProjectIn this podcast we get a fascinating insight into a project where mountain bikers are a leading light in Capercaillie conservation helping to preserve and enhance the rare and vulnerable habitat for the critically endangered Capercaillie. The ‘Trail Feathers Project', funded by the Cairngorms Capercaillie Project, has involved the whole mountain bike community, Badenoch and Strathspey Trail Association, land managers and conservationists. With only a few hundred remaining in Scotland, the vast majority of which are in the Badenoch and Strathspey area, and mountain biking increasing in the Cairngorms, a solution was needed to protect the environment for caper to flourish with minimal disturbance, while allowing riders to still venture into the forests with the knowledge that they are minimising their footprint in more sensitive areas. Find out more about the depth of this project, the trail mapping of the area, the communities involved and their reaction, the involvement of young trail builders as part of the Trail Academy, the new trails that have been developed and the potential impact of this project as an exemplar in other areas of conservation and across not just Scottish mountain biking, but other outdoor sports too. Many thanks to Douglas Carchrie, Badenoch and Strathspey Trail Development Coordinator for Cairngorms National Park Authority and Emma Holgate Chair of Badenoch and Strathspey Trail Association and Senior Instructor at Glenmore Lodge for taking the time to speak to us.

Photographing birds across continents. In this episode, we interview His Excellency Jacques Pitteloud who happens to be the Swiss Ambassador to the United States.  Based in Washington, Ambassador Pitteloud is also a birdwatcher and bird photographer.  In 2021, Ambassador Pitteloud's photograph of a rare painted bunting that appeared in Maryland landed in the Washington Post prompting lots of excitement in the birding world. Later, the Washingtonian ran an article about him, titled, “The Guy Who Got That Photo of a Rare Painted Bunting? He's the Swiss Ambassador!” He posts his birding photos on his Facebook page. On that page, he posts nothing personal or political. Here he talks about how he developed this passion for birds and some of his favourite regions and birds.   Episode highlights 12:45: his views on the “big year of birding.” 13:45: his view on the different species of bird watchers. 15:00: he talks about two anecdotes in Africa– Kenya.  About finding the blue-headed beeeater and the Mackinder's Eagle Owl. 18:00 mountain passes where you can see raptor migrations. He talks about Chicago's Magic Hedge in the middle of the city where migratory birds especially warblers (thousands of them) congregate in early May before crossing the Great Lakes.   19:30 about the Connecticut warbler and warbler identification. 21:15 the apps that he uses to identify birds. 22:00 Is there a link between birding and diplomacy? “Birding is the new golfing.” 24:15: what photographic equipment does he use.  He uses Canon. 600mm F4 lens.  Camera is D90.  With 500mm lenses he shoots handheld. With the 600mm he uses a tripod. 26:00 his favourite birds.  Raptors.  How they move differently.   27:15 about his Indian Facebook friends.

Communities in the Scottish Highlands are facing a housing crisis so bad, it's been described as a clearance for the 21st century. According to the Convenor of the Highland Council, Bill Lobban, “the species most under threat in the Cairngorms National Park isn't the Capercaillie but the young family trying to find a home”. Ironically one key cause of the problem is also what brings most into the local economy – tourism. Across the region the growth of the tourism and hospitality industry is driving the demand for 2nd homes and many houses are now used for short-term holiday lets, with the result that very little accommodation remains for locals searching for somewhere to live, what does remain is usually unaffordable or unsuitable. The knock-on effect is that businesses across the Highlands are struggling to find staff and even when they manage to find them, they often lose them because there's no rental accommodation locally. A sector which has been particularly hard hit is hospitality where low wages exacerbate the issue with the result that hotels and restaurants find themselves in the unenviable position of having plenty of customers but not enough staff to serve them. Often, the only way many businesses can secure staff is if they provide accommodation but that's not always suitable for long term employees and skilled staff who might have young families plus not all businesses can afford to buy or manage housing for their staff. It's not just the hospitality sector either which is suffering, the salmon farming industry is being hit hard too and its not just low paid workers, all professions are being priced out of the housing market by too many people chasing too few properties. In Rental Health: All Work No Homes Pennie Stuart heads first to the northwest Highland village of Ullapool to hear how the business community is responding to the unintended consequences of the tourism boom while further south in Aviemore, in the heart of the Cairngorms national park, she hears about the radical solutions being proposed to bring staff, homes and tourism back into some kind of balance. The legend continues... this week, we're proceeding north to Scotland for Book 2 of Isle of the Mighty. There's more of the same in terms of bizarre history section content management, NPCs who are intriguing and forgettable in equal measure, and a geography chapter that is surprisingly good! Even though in the balance, this section probably leaves more questions unanswered than we had when we started, there are some moments of true enjoyment scattered through. (Lookin' at you, Loch Lads.) It's heavier on the vignettes and side fiction than England was—but we'll take it in exchange for how the book completely skips over some of the country's more important centuries, in favor of talking about random changeling feuds that have no bearing on the game. Douglas Carchrie is a bicycle mechanic, mountain bike guide, and mountain bike trail consultant at Big Mountain Scotland. He has also served as a national park conservation intern and conducted research into mountain biker behavior as a student at the University of Highlands and Islands in Scotland. In this episode, we ask: Do mountain bikers tend to bother animals more than other trail users? What are some of the things mountain bikers have been asked to do to avoid disturbing animals like the threatened Capercaillie bird? Based on your study, do you think most mountain bikers are willing to change their behavior if they understand the impact of their actions? Which methods are most effective when it comes to communicating conservation information to riders? There are a number of tools available to land managers, including enforcement, trail design, and education. Which ones provide the biggest impact in your opinion? Based on your experience as a mountain bike guide and director for Big Mountain Scotland, where are some of the best places to ride in the country? Read more about Carchrie's study here: https://www.bigmountainscotland.co.uk/post/mountain-bikers-awareness-of-capercaillie-in-the-cairngorms-national-park And if you missed part one of our discussion of mountain biking and the environment, be sure to go back and listen to our previous show, episode #279. --Keep up with the latest in mountain biking at Singletracks.com and on Instagram @singletracks --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/singletracks/support

Hunting Dog Confidential
Episode 12: The Spitz Breeds

Hunting Dog Confidential

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 1, 2020 58:44

In this episode, we travel way back in time to some of the earliest types of dogs that developed alongside humans for the mutual benefit of dog and man. These dogs are classified as spitz dogs, named for their pointy ears and muzzle. While the various breeds are found around the world and used in a variety of working tasks, they all share a few key characteristics: a thick coat, pointy ears, a short muzzle, a tail that curls up and over their back, and an independent character that harkens back to their earliest ancestors.   Not all spitz dogs are currently used for hunting, though they can all trace back to early hunting roots. Today, spitzes are used to pull sleds, herd livestock, guard property, provide companionship, as well as hunt birds, small game, and big game.   One interesting example of the spitz, though now extinct, is the Salish Wool Dog. These small, white dogs were developed and raised by the Coast Salish indigenous people of what is now Washington and British Columbia. They were deliberately managed for their thick, luxurious fleeces, which were sheared each spring and spun into prized blankets and other textiles.   As for hunting spitzes, the most primitive style of hunting is that done with Korean Jindos. The hunter would release his pack of dogs, who went out into the forest and hunted down big game such as a deer or boar. Once the animal was down, one dog would return to the hunter to alert him to the kill and to lead him to the site, while the rest of the pack remained with the game to protect it from scavengers.   In Scandinavia, spitzes such as the Finnish Spitz are used to locate and tree forest game birds such as the Capercaillie. Once treed, the dog will carefully bark at the bird to hold its attention and distract from the approaching hunter. This allows the hunter to cautiously approach and take the bird from the tree with either small caliber rifle or a shotgun. Small game is taken in much the same way, with the dog holding the game at bay until the hunter can arrive. Large game such as moose require a similar approach, because the moose will often stand its ground and face down the dog while the hunter approaches undetected.   Overall, hunting spitzes represent a versatile range of skills in pursuing prey and working cooperatively with the hunter. Tune in to hear more discussion of this fascinating type of hunting dog and learn more about how they have been and continue to be used around the world.   As always, we thank you for listening and hope you’ll continue to reach out with your comments, questions, and ideas. Brett Westwood presents a special programme as Open Country joins forces with the European Broadcasting Union and RTE in Ireland to follow the Dawn Chorus from East to West across Europe. Sunday 1 May was International Dawn Chorus Day and from midnight until six am, Brett Westwood sat in RSPB Ham Wall in Somerset broadcasting about what he heard. The silence of the night is broken by belching Moorhens, booming Bitterns and even a Marsh Frog before Dawn breaks to reveal a huge cast of Coots, Little Grebes and even Brett's first Cuckoo of Spring, to name but a few. But as the Dawn moves West, Brett speaks to Alexander Khaburgaev in Russia about the Starlings of Moscow which imitate cab drivers from a hundred years ago, and Jason Aloisio describes how tackling illegal hunting has allowed the sparrows of Malta to thrive. Helge Søfteland and Niall Hatch witness a thrilling spat between rival Capercaillie, and Rob Buiter and Eric Dempsey report on Bluethroats in The Netherlands. Producer: Toby Field.
