The Nashville-based singer/songwriter was a member of the trio Stray Birds before launching a solo recording career in 2019. She released her fourth full-length studio album in the Summer of 2024.

Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

On the show today is singer, songwriter, fiddle player and now producer, Maya DeVitry. Maya is an incredible musician and someone I've been lucky enough to be involved with in a number of projects with over the last few years. Originally from Pennsylvania, Maya is known by some for her work with her old band, The Stray Birds, and some from her more recent solo recordings and touring. She has released 4 solo albums since 2019 and the latest is an amazing album that she self-produced, called “The Only Moment” which came out late last year. She has an incredibly powerful and expressive voice and has worked hard at developing her unique delivery, along with her exceptional songwriting skills. Maya spent a good deal of time emersing herself in bluegrass music as a youngster and became an accomplished fiddle player, which led her to studying at Berklee, but while there, veered more into the world of songwriting and that has been her focus ever since. While The Stray Birds were an excellent vehicle for her to begin her career, it wasn't until she left the band that she really came into her own as a performer and writer. It's an interesting story and it was great to get a chance to talk to her about it, how she took the plunge into finally embracing a solo career, making her latest record, and how she's navigating a hefty touring schedule on top of also now producing records for other artists. You can get all the latest info and her tour dates at mayadevitry.com - Enjoy my conversation with Maya DeVitry! This season is brought to you by our sponsors Larivée Guitars and Fishman AmplificationYou can join our Patreon here to get all episodes ad-free, as well as access to all early episodes.Visit us at: www.makersandshakerspodcast.com Get ad-free episodes and access to all early episodes by subscribing to Patreon. Maya de Vitry is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer based in Nashville, TN. She grew up in a musical family in Lancaster, PA, playing in creeks and forests, surrounded by fields of cows, corn, and soybeans. She took piano lessons from her grandmother, studied classical violin in school, and learned old-time fiddle tunes and bluegrass songs at campfires and festival campgrounds with her family. Maya first traveled as a fiddling street musician, but quickly fell in love with the craft of songwriting and picked up the guitar and the clawhammer banjo. She spent seven formative years performing in bars, theaters, and on festival stages as a founding member of The Stray Birds, a hard-touring acoustic string band known for passionate live performances and stirring vocal harmonies. When the band parted ways in 2018, Maya began devotedly creating a powerful new body of work as a solo artist. Maya's music unabashedly blurs genre, weaving country, folk, rock, and pop elements through her vibrant storytelling and her extraordinarily dynamic singing. Whether she is playing with her electric band in a bar or sharing a song on acoustic guitar at a folk festival, there is an emotional immediacy and a striking magnetism in Maya's music. She has been invited to support a variety of tours - she has warmed up stages for innovative singer-songwriters like John Craigie and Aoife O'Donovan, and bands like Mighty Poplar and The Wood Brothers. In addition to performing and recording, Maya is a sought-after co-writer and co-creator, and has been steadily and closely collaborating within her chosen musical community of Nashville, Tennessee for nearly a decade.

Maya de Vitry's vibrant voice seems to rise out of some necessity of bringing songs to life, embracing listeners with a soulful intimacy. She grew up in a musical family in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, understanding music to be a place of gathering, a way to spend a summer night around a campfire. Maya first traveled and performed as a fiddling street musician, and then in bars, theaters, and on festival stages as a founding member of The Stray Birds (2010-2018). Since the band parted ways in 2018, Maya has been devotedly creating a powerful new body of work—one that consistently blurs genre while showcasing her delight in storytelling and her extraordinarily dynamic singing.  Her brand new album, The Only Moment, is an instant classic and a career highlight. Her 4th full-length release in just six years, The Only Moment—out now—is a refreshing 10-song testament to the generative simmering that underpins periods of reinvention and growth. Produced by de Vitry and mixed by Grammy-award-winning engineer Justin Francis (Madison Cunningham), The Only Moment is an unabashed blend of indie folk, indie rock, and indie pop, with elements of Americana and alt-country. Recorded at Phantom Studios in Gallatin, TN, the album captures the unfettered energy and occasional chaos of de Vitry's Nashville "bar band," featuring Anthony da Costa on electric guitar, Ethan Jodziewicz on electric bass, and Dominic Billet on drums. __________ This episode is brought to you by Magic Mind. Maya, Nina and Lyle de Vitry's life, beginning in Lancaster PA, has been music and family, music festivals with old-time music, songwriting and folk music. The de Vitry siblings (including sister Monica, currently teaching art in Western Mass) grew up amongst music and nature in their rural home and even had a family band called Old-Time Liberation Front. Many jams around the campfire, music lessons and encouragement from their parents lead all three siblings to careers surrounding indie folk music (and jazz! thank you, Nina). All three have released albums in the past year: Maya's new album “The Only Moment” is her fourth record in only six years of performing solo in her post Stray Birds career. Lyle JUST released his debut album, “Door Within a Dream,” while simultaneously working alongside other banjo makers at the Pisgah Banjo Company, his current day job. Nina's excellent debut "What You Feel is Real" came out last year, but she's been busy playing on the Noah Kahan tour as "the utility player". Nina's singing harmonies and playing fiddle, mandolin, banjo, guitar and 12-string guitar while finding creative inspiration from the energy of the crowds and her new found musician siblings in Noah's band.In our special conversation with the de Vitry sibs, we talk about how they feel about each other's creative process, songwriter process and musician inspiration. They get into how being at all these music festivals and jams as kids bonded them together. We learn about made-up words that their family uses to this day: stay tuned to find out what a butchabee and a taffy bub is. Also they each talk about how disconnected they feel from the mainstream (Nina had never heard of Noah Kahan's music until she was asked to audition for his band). Also Lyle gets into how being around three sisters, female musicians and female songwriters has impacted him and his musicality. And don't miss a very special de Vitry "Which One" lightning round wrapping up one of the most special singer-songwriter interviews we've done on Basic Folk.Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Interested in sponsoring us? Songwriter Maya de Vitry and bassist Ethan Jodziewicz come to their partnership with an understanding for their chosen lifestyle and a creative playfulness that enhances their connection. While Maya's roots are firmly planted in folk music, Ethan brings classical music and improvisation to the table. They've been collaborating together since Maya's post-Stray Birds solo career, which launched in early 2019 with her record, Adaptations. Fast forward to 2023, they are back alongside Joel Timmons and Hannah Delynn with the fabulous new EP Infinite. For the first time in years, Maya is back on the road, while Ethan has been touring basically non-stop with musicians like Aoife O'Donovan, Sierra Hull and Lindsay Lou. In our conversation, they talk about how it's helpful to be in a relationship with someone who is also deeply committed to a musician's lifestyle while understanding when someone needs a break.Maya also reflects on her current state of being within her body and how she has trouble recognizing physical pain to the point where she can't move. She talks of the realization that she had the tendency to tense up when picking up a guitar and how that was because she felt like she didn't belong. Ethan and Maya share their observations on working within a boundary. Ethan laments that he often works within a boundary with improvisation while Maya speaks of placing limitations around touring and performing live shows. We end this insightful interview with Maya revealing celebrity sightings are her Nashville Starbucks and a very fun Lightning Round called "Which One."Follow Basic Folk on social media: https://basicfolk.bio.link/ Sign up for Basic Folk's newsletter: https://bit.ly/basicfolknews Help produce Basic Folk by contributing: https://basicfolk.com/donate/ Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands

Lancaster-born, Nashville-based Nina de Vitry‘s debut album, What You Feel is Real, shines while showcasing her passion for jazz and folk music. de Vitry's name may sound familiar, as she comes from a musical family and is the youngest sister of folk superstar Maya de Vitry (formerly of The Stray Birds). She grew up fiddling around the campfire, while being classically trained on the violin and (her true love) the piano. She started writing songs very young, became enchanted with foreign languages and found herself studying at Temple University. Part-way through her freshman year, something felt wrong and she decided to take a gap year in order to operate outside of a system and find out what she wanted to do. After attending the beloved Miles of Music camp in New Hampshire, Nina was inspired to fully lean into her musicality. She recorded an EP in 2017 and started dabbling in music as a profession.During the pandemic, she was in the creating process of What You Feel is Real. At the time, Nina experienced a return to self in several ways including reconnecting with the piano. A theme of the record is the making the choice believing yourself: You say “What we feel is real. What we love is real. And I think the more we all trust these inner voices, the closer we will get to both knowing ourselves and knowing a more loving and peaceful society.” Her new record is a fabulously strong debut that feels like a classic songwriter album playing with different styles of jazz. Lol j/k. I love Maya and this album is perfect. Maya's originally from Lancaster, where she lived and met the members of her old band The Stray Birds. Since the dissolution of the Birds, she's been incredibly prolific with all these solo albums, co-writes and the like. If you're not familiar, this record is a great intro to the genius of one of the greatest musicians on the scene today. The vibes I'm getting on this record are John Prine, Patty Griffin and, of course, Gillian Welch/Dave Rawlings. We. Are. Digging. IN!I'm so happy Maya was up for going through this beauty of a record track by track! It's a brilliant collection that subtly knocks you to the ground over the course of its eleven songs. Produced at home with her partner, the much in-demand bassist and producer, Ethan Jodziewicz (The Milk Carton Kids, Sierra Hull, Aoife O'Donovan, Darol Anger, Tony Trischka), Violet Light actually contains a ton of collaborations from Maya's extensive musical community. This includes her own family; her siblings all collaborated for the very first time on tape for the song “Real Time, Real Tears,” about losing a favorite uncle. Yeah, you try not to cry during that one. Anywoo. It feels like a gift to be able to turn these songs over and over, contemplate their meaning, their creation and then be able to talk directly to the brains behind it all. David Burchfield writes American folk music that swaggers wildly through raw emotion within a meticulously written and arranged package. Burchfield’s literate lyrics meet emotive grace in nods to Jason Isbell, Mandolin Orange, and David Ramirez. There is a powerful candor in Burchfield’s writing – raw, emotive, and rich with details that bring the listener right into the scene of his passion. Solo, Burchfield performs with a surprising ferocity and emotional delivery that has silenced even the rowdiest of rooms. Critics have called his 5-piece band, David Burchfield & the Fire Guild, akin to “the Band meets the Stray Birds” – equal parts all out rock n roll party and sensitively arranged balladry. Burchfield has played the Middle of the Map Fest, Boulevardia, was featured in the Chevy Music Showcase, and American Songwriter has said: "This type of solid songcraft would make Burchfield fit right in on a bill with the likes of Lucinda Williams or Jason Isbell." Dave sat down with David to talk about his writing process, what it's like when you're not writing songs about yourself, when obscurity helps, and writing songs that make your audience dance! It's another raw and riveting discussion about song craft! For more music, check out https://davidburchfieldmusic.com/

Immediately after finishing his album “Thousand Mike Night”, Jonah Tolchin got behind the wheel and lived it. He drove from Muscle Shoals, AL all the way to his hometown in NJ in one straight shot, accompanied by guitarist Lucan Hamren. When they pulled into Hamren’s driveway, the odometer added 998 miles. If you haven't listened to Maya's first appearance on Basic Folk, make sure you go back to episode 11. I just want you to be as obsessed with Maya De Vitry as I am. Listen on and I guarantee you'll be all about this amazing person.

Folk Alley Sessions

Sometimes even the very best laid plans go a bit awry. And singer/songwriter Maya de Vitry knows that firsthand. A talented fiddler who spent her childhood writing stories and poems, she always figured she’d participate in music in the background. As she got older, however, she realized a whole new world was wide open to her – the world of a singer and songwriter. While that discovery was truly magical, she says, she put it on the back burner for several years to participate in the renowned band The Stray Birds. But now, she’s front and center once again, ready to embrace her voice, her vision, her…SELF. Maya de Vitry joined us in the studio to share some eye-opening thoughts about what it really took to put together her debut solo album, Adaptations, during a recent session in Nashville, Tennessee.

If ever the saying "when one door closes another door opens" was appropriate it is now, for Maya de Vitry. For the last few years Maya was one of the voice and songwriters of The Stray Birds, a band who were impossible to not be in drawn to. There was something about the sound, the name, the songs, the work ethic. But mostly, you couldn't help but want to know more about THAT VOICE. That voice was and is Maya's. She sounds like no other. All chills and no frills. And now that the feathers of the band are all strewn apart on the ground, it's time, perhaps, for Ms. de Vitry to tell let us in to her world, her story, the beginning of a journey as it unfolds. If you haven't heard her before, look her up. Her brand new solo album entitled "Adaptations" will feel as home to you as Joni Mitchell's "Blue".

The Texas born, Nashville based songwriter was one of the artists around whom the format was created 20 years ago, and indeed he won the Americana Music Association's lifetime achievement award for songwriting in 2006. He's a valued collaborator, earning a Grammy Award for his recent work with his longtime friend and colleague Emmylou Harris. He became an acclaimed author with his memoir Chinaberry Sidewalks in 2011. Recently he's released a first-ever Christmas album and a volume of stripped down "Acoustic Classics" from his extensive catalog. We cover a range of times and topics. Also in the hour, Maya de Vitry talks about her difficult but necessary departure from the beloved acoustic trio The Stray Birds. She's set out on her own with the album Adaptations.

By Kelly McCartney, for FolkAlley.com In 2012, The Stray Birds flew onto the folk music circle with their eponymous debut. The trio " Maya de Vitry, Oliver Craven, and Charlie Muench " came out of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which is, by no obvious, account a hotbed for roots music. But the threesome found not only each other, but also a sound that worked... really well. Though two of the three Birds have migrated to other geographic locales, they continue to play and tour together behind their latest album, 'Best Medicine.' It, too, has met with a favorable response. The Stray Birds stopped by Folk Alley's studio for a Session taping in November of 2014 (watch videos and listen to the interview below), and I had a chance to ask de Vitry a few additional questions. How did it feel to be so warmly embraced with your first record? And what kind of pressure does that put on the second? This second record has truly been an opportunity for us to write material with this band in mind " to write for our voices, and the textures of our instruments. We were still just getting to know each other musically with the first record, but it was certainly encouraging to find that the music we were making resonated with people. As we traveled around with The Stray Birds, we found a lot of inspiration for the songs on Best Medicine. The new songs were making their way into the sets, and the audience reaction was exciting. We were beginning to have some really beautiful moments in our live performances, and certainly felt some pressure to try to capture that on the second album. The new record has a really live feel " our voices blending and bleeding together " because we opted out of separation and headphones. Someone recently handed us a real compliment: "The Stray Birds are tighter and looser every time I hear them," some guy said after a recent show at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City. It made perfect sense to us. Was there a moment when the three of you clicked in as the Stray Birds, a moment when you knew you were a band and not just some friends playing together? It could very well have been October 20, 2011, when we opened for Pokey LaFarge in our hometown of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. There is a photograph of us on stage together that night, and it's as if we can't hide the feeling. It was strong enough to quit a couple other things and start working on a record three months later. Like you mentioned, you guys found each other in Lancaster. Now that you're breaking out " and stepping out " is that scene strong enough to keep you inspired or are there plans to relocate to a more robust creative community? Lancaster is very much this band's home, and may always feel that way. It feels like we've mostly been living on the road these past few years, but Charlie still pays rent in Lancaster, I pay rent in Asheville, North Carolina, and Oliver in Nashville, Tennessee, these days. I'm drawn to Nashville, as well, and am planning to make that transition in the new year. Who are some of the artists you model your harmonies after? The Everly Brothers, the Band, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, the Beatles, the Stanley Brothers... What is it about bluegrass and folk that continues to be appealing to young musicians? I grew up being immersed in this style of music, in a music-loving and musical family, and going to music festivals was the hands-down highlight of every childhood summer. I could go out in a field or out in the woods with hundreds of other people who loved music, and these songs and tunes felt timeless and limitless out there, in between the tents and out under the stars. For me, that setting has never lost its magic. I think there must be some appeal in the simplicity of it, or the big choruses that seem to invite somebody wandering by a campsite to join in. You can create a party in a field with these brilliant acoustic instruments and some big voices and some old songs.

The Stray Birds – Drawing upon the richness of American folk music traditions, the signature power of THE STRAY BIRDS sound lies in outstanding songwriting that soars in three-part harmony. Raised on music within a few miles of farmland from each other, The Stray Birds were born of a compelling collaboration between two unique writers and vocalists– the pure, luxurious voice of Maya de Vitry and Oliver Craven’s richness of tone and depth of delivery. Grounding their sound in the unshakeable groove of bassist Charles Muench, The Stray Birds are a trio of captivating chemistry and sensitive musicality. From bustling street corners to silent halls, their performances speak to an uncompromising reverence for songs. For more, go to www.thestraybirds.com.
