We first saw Eddi Reader singing with the Gang Of Four on Whistle Test in 1982. This eventful pod traces her story from seven kids in a two-bedroom council flat (“me in the toilet with a guitar singing Your Cheating Heart”), to the Scottish folk clubs, busking with circus acrobats on the Left Bank, to radio jingles, life as a backing singer and the rapid rise of Fairground Attraction who reformed last year, 34 years after they split in 1990. It's highly entertaining from the kick-off, not least …. … snogging the Earl of Moray's son during Dylan at Blackbushe. … the jingles she sang on ‘80s radio ads. … what she learnt from Annie Lennox when touring with Eurythmics. … backing singer stage-wear etiquette. … performing Love Me Tender aged eight in the school classroom. … singing Three Drunken Maidens and Lord Franklin at the Irvine Folk Club, over the road from Amanda's Wet T-Shirt Night. … busking in Paris and the songs that pulled the most money (eg Tupelo Honey and All Along the Watchtower). … “men you put on the shoulder-pads for.” … what Billy Bragg called “a civilian”. … Chou Pahrot, Cado Belle, Café Jacques, Stone the Crows and other great lost Scottish bands. … Hamish Imlach's advice about how to project onstage. … how to use a pencil as a pop-shield. … and her Grandad “who loved his wife so much he nearly told her”. Eddi Reader tickets here: https://eddireader.co.uk/gigs/ Fairground Attraction's Beautiful Happening album: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Beautiful-Happening-Fairground-Attraction/dp/B0CZ7NMJYV https://eddireader.co.uk/Find out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Fairground Attraction are back—35 years after their meteoric rise to fame with the double-platinum album The First of a Million Kisses and the timeless hit Perfect. The original line-up has reunited for a 14-date UK tour and a brand-new album, Beautiful Happening, set for release on September 27th.The band's return has already delivered two new singles: the reflective and powerful title track, and the buoyant, hook-filled Learning To Swim, a track that captures the classic Fairground Attraction sound—effortless pop melodies, heartfelt lyrics, and Eddi Reader's unmistakable voice, richer and more resonant than ever.Learning To Swim sees the band exploring themes of courage and change with a wiser, older perspective, inspired by songwriter Mark Nevin's own experience as a father. The new music marks a rebirth for the band, who reconnected after decades apart and discovered that the chemistry they once had was still very much alive.Fairground Attraction's original run may have been brief, but it left a lasting impact. Now, after years of silence and separate journeys, they've found their way back to each other—and to the music that made them unique. With Beautiful Happening, Fairground Attraction are not just back—they're better than ever.Highlights from Toby Gribben's Friday afternoon show on Shout Radio. Featuring chat with top showbiz guests. Step into a world of impactful theatre as we unpack the latest podcast episode. We kick things off with Grenfell: in the words of survivors at the National Theatre. This powerful verbatim play draws directly from the testimonies of the residents at the heart of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. With six years passed since the devastating event, the interviews with survivors and bereaved individuals lay bare the shocking impact of the failures that led to this national disaster. Gillian Slovo masterfully weaves these voices into a narrative that raises urgent questions about prevention and justice. Co-directed by Phyllida Lloyd and Anthony Simpson-Pike, the play delves into the resilience of a community fighting for justice, forming part of the National Theatre's ongoing creative engagement with North Kensington.Switching gears, we dive into the sensational world of Horrible Histories: Terrible Tudors. Back by popular demand for a second year, this West End hit brings history to life in a hilariously gruesome manner. From the notorious Henries to the treacherous reign of Elizabeth, audiences are treated to legends, lies, and the nastiest bits of the torturous Tudors. Prepare for headless wives, punch-ups with the Pope, Bloody Mary, and even surviving the Spanish Armada. It's a history lesson with a twist that's sure to keep you entertained and educated.Lastly, we delve into the world premiere of Brokeback Mountain, a poignant new play with music based on Annie Proulx's acclaimed short story. Under the direction of Jonathan Butterell, the production stars Broadway and silver screen names Mike Faist and Lucas Hedges, both making their West End debuts. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of 1963 Wyoming, where Ennis and Jack's lives are forever altered by their time working on Brokeback Mountain. Dan Gillespie Sells' emotionally charged Country and Western songs beautifully underscore this tale of forbidden love and its heartrending consequences over two decades. The production also features the remarkable Eddi Reader and her onstage Country and Western band, adding an additional layer of musical depth.Get ready to immerse yourself in these thought-provoking and captivating theatrical experiences in the latest episode.

Tale 9: Scottish singer-songwriter Eddi Reader has three BRIT Awards to her name, fronted punk outfit Gang of Four, harmonized with Annie Lennox touring with the Eurythmics, and topped the UK charts with Fairground Attraction. But when I caught up with her at Cambridge Folk Festival she revealed a bit of her more private side as she reminiscing about getting old, Cambridge men and travelled around Europe with a circus! It's got to be perfect, sang Eddi Reader, the lead singer of Fairground Attraction. And, in today's material world of social media and personal brand building, it's easy to assume that if you're not perfect in all areas of your life, then you're somehow falling short. As we digest yet another personal development craze, try to keep up with the latest diet craze, fitness craze, fashion craze, or technology craze, this push for perfection can even send us the other way. Throwing our hands up in defeat before we've even begun to try, instead finding solace in all the things we're supposed to be avoiding. So how do we know when the striving to become better, slimmer, wealthier, happier, is actually becoming an obstacle to our progress, forcing us, not to thrive, but to become stuck? Perfectionism, the constant seeking to be better, to achieve more, to fulfil our potential, can actually prevent us from doing exactly that. It can lead to a fear of failure, a fear of not achieving what we set out to achieve and, rather than excelling, crashing and burning instead. And this fear can leave us paralysed, unable to move at all. In this episode of the podcast we speak with Dr Patricia Zurita Ona – affectionately known as DrZ. She specialises in acceptance and commitment therapy for high achievers and over thinkers, helping them become unstuck from worries, fears, anxieties, obsessions, perfectionism, procrastination, and ineffective playing-it-safe strategies. We talk about how success can easily lead to shame, how high performance can lead to emotional paralysis, and how fear of failure can lead us to take the easier option, even when we are capable of much much more. W/C 26th April 2021 There is still a great big musical gap left behind by Kirsty MacColl, we lost her far too young. I had always been aware of her, but it was only when the album Tropical Brainstorm was released in 2000 that I really began to 'get it'. Blessed with a gift for songwriting and a take on the world that seemed quirky at first glance, but on closer inspection resonated with openness and candour. Bizarrely it's a story about Crocs that brought me here, I was looking for a song that referenced feet or shoes or walking and I remembered 'in these shoes'. Of course that set me off, and forty minutes later I am still listening to clips of Kirstys songs on Youtube. Which means I need to include another one of my favourites, penned by KM and delivered exquisitely by Eddi Reader at a celebration for Kirsty from 2010 Stay Safe. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIWErJshs9M (Dear John - Eddi Reader) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DbjPkVf82M (In These Shoes - Kirsty MacColl) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leeds-56918624 (Marsden Moor Fire) https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56901386 (Crocs Comeback) https://www.instagram.com/ashortstories (Instagram) https://www.twitter.com/ashortstories (Twitter) https://www.facebook.com/ashortstoriespodcast/ (Facebook) Support this podcast

Órla Sweeney is In The Lamplight! Hear all about Órla's amazing life starting from when she was a newborn baby and her dad placed her next to a record player for a musical christening by Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. As a child, Órla attended more gigs than most people will in their entire lifetime, accompanying her dad, Oliver, who worked as a journalist for the music magazine Hot Press. As a child, Órla had the opportunity to meet many renowned musicians and artists. As a teenager, while Órla's peers were going to popular club nights in Dublin, Órla often found herself at a traditional music session in Whelans or a folk gig in Vicar Street. The songs of Richard Thompson have remained lifelong favourites of Órla's. We get a listen to Órla performing his classic "The Dimming of the Day" alongside former In The Lamplight guest, Seamie O'Dowd. In her early twenties, Órla recorded and released an album of original material co-written with her father. The opportunity arose out of a recording session for a separate project on which Órla was providing backing vocals and the resulting album led to her being signed to the Warner Bros. record label and she completed several successful tours and performed as support for some of the all-time greats of Irish music. After listening to a track called "Donegal Rain" from her debut album "The Blue Note", Órla opens up on whether her exposure to the music industry and music journalism as a child gave her a heightened awareness of any criticism she received as a performer. Órla gives a very honest insight into her struggles with confidence when it comes to performing in front of an audience.Aside from her career as a performer, Órla has been involved in many behind-the-scenes musical projects, chief among which is her involvement with the phenomenally successful "Ceol" album series in which popular artists record Irish-language versions of their hit songs.Órla produced several albums in the series in the mid-to-late noughties working with artists such as Des Bishop, The Coronas and Eddi Reader. Her work with Reader on a Gaeilge version of the Fairground Attraction hit "Perfect" led to them forming a lasting friendship. Órla performed a song written by Eddi's husband and sung regularly by Eddi - "Wild Mountainside" as part of Kieran's "Not A Theme Night" and we take a listen to that performance here.Rory asks Órla about the emotion she brings to her perfomances, something evident to anyone who saw her perform in the recent "Not A Theme Night" show. Following up with a tough question, Luke asks Órla about the special pair of headphones she's wearing for the interview. The three lads wrap up by reflection on their chat with Órla and reveal some plans for next week's episode which will be released on Saint Patrick's Day.

Holly Lerski talking about her life in music Holly Lerski formed Angelou with guitarist Jo Baker in 1996. They recorded their first demo in the winter of that year, which included a cover of the Leonard Cohen song "Hallelujah". Inspired by Jeff Buckley's version, Lerski had been a fan of Buckley's, corresponding with the artist. Local Norwich label Haven Records heard the demo and signed Angelou in the beginning of 1997, scheduling the release of the Hallelujah EP to coincide with a UK summer tour supporting Eddi Reader and Boo Hewerdine. 'Hallelujah' came out a week after Jeff Buckley's untimely death, ending the year on novelist Nick Hornby's 'Best of 97' compilation. In 1998 Angelou released their first album 'Automiracles'. Now including drummer Phil Di Palma, the album was written by Lerski, and recorded in 10 days by producer Calum MacColl. The album featured guest vocals from Eddi Reader and Boo Hewerdine and received comparisons to The Sundays' debut 'Reading, Writing and Arithmetic'. Their second album 'While You Were Sleeping', released in 2000, received further acclaim and established Lerski as one of the new crop of up and coming female folk artists. Written and produced by Lerski, and recorded in studio down-time, the album finished with a moving tribute to Jeff Buckley. Lerski went on to contribute this to the Buckley documentary 'Amazing Grace'. In 2001 Spanish label El Diablo released an Angelou compilation called Midnight Witcheries. Now joined by new drummer Cath Evans and bassist Anne Richardson, this record allowed the band to be heard for the first time throughout Europe. They completed 2 extensive tours of Spain, appearing on national TV and radio. They also went on to release a further EP and 2 videos. On hearing of their success abroad, UK music independent giant Sanctuary Records offered Lerski a recording and publishing agreement and at the end of 2001 Lerski finally signed a major deal. Angelou were soon off on the road again, this time as a duo touring Scandinavia and Europe with blues legend John Hiatt & The Goners. On their return from Europe the band went into rehearsals for the third album, staying in a wooden hunting lodge in Derbyshire. Recorded both in Denmark and Manchester throughout 2002, 'Life Is Beautiful' was a much poppier record. It was finally released in 2003 under Lerski's own name. With the launch of the album came lives dates with The Cranberries, Jason Mraz and Josh Rouse, and support from BBC Radio 2 and most notably Wake Up To Wogan producer Paul Walters. There was also news that Lerski's song 'My Love' would be featured in a Hollywood film. It looked like the bands hard work had finally paid off, however it was not to be. In 2004 after disagreements with Sanctuary over lack of promotion for the record, Lerski was forced to leave the label and her songs behind. In the summer of 2004, tired of the music industry and following a break up, Lerski relocated to Manchester where she began to write new material with the intention of releasing on her own imprint Laundry Label. 'Greetings From N.Y.' was Laundry's first release. Featuring on the cover a hand written postcard to Lerski from Jeff Buckley, 'Greetings' was a 'best of' CD showcasing Lerski and the band's music to date. BBC Radio 2's Wake Up To Wogan once again championed the record and 'More Than A Storm' featured weekly on his show. Starbucks at the time was also featuring tracks from 'Life Is Beautiful' on their in-store compilation. By 2006, following the news that Sanctuary had been bought out by Universal Music Group, Lerski returned to Norwich to begin a new chapter.

The 738am podcast - talking to people about stuff

Bernard Butler is a musician and record producer, known to lots of us as the guitarist with Suede, before that all went a bit wonky. Others might know the song 'Yes', by McAlmont and Butler, as one that became something of an anthem around the time of the marriage referendum earlier this year. Aside from that he's played and/or produced with the likes of Duffy, The Libertines, Roy Orbison, Eddi Reader and loads more. He was in Dublin a few weeks back as part of a McAlmont & Butler tour and he was very kind to get off the ferry and give me some of his pre-sound check time on the day of the gig in Vicar Street. We had a chat about his Irish roots, changing his musical instrument from violin to guitar, gigging with Suede, creative friction, his work as a producer from his studio overlooking Emirates Stadium and loads more. You can follow Bernard on Twitter @Bernard_Butler or visit his official website for all your Bernard Butler needs.

Scotland is the midst of a constitutional debate and our near neighbours seem to have no opinions, according to Lesley in Newsnet Scotland. We discuss some of the reasons. One of the ideas to enliven the debate was a TV Debate. If David Cameron won’t face Alex Salmond for a variety of reasons, are there better choices? How about lining up celebrities? Eddi Reader, Eddie Izzard, Kevin Bridges, Jim Davidson, Brian Cox and George Galloway are the names in the frame. We also touch on a great piece by Pat Kane  in the excellent Bella Caledonia ( as ever ) and discover a new leftish movement out there; Mair nor a rock wind.

What would happen if you put 8 songwriters into a house for five days? Well, there was only one way to find out... In November 2005, Burnsong invited 8 writers from the worlds of jazz, pop, rock, folk and traditional music to write together in a Georgian Mansion deep in the heart of the Dumfries and Galloway Countryside. Boo Hewerdine, David Scott, Niki King, Emily Smith, Geoff Martyn, Marc Pilley, Riley Briggs and Sophie Bancroft picked up the gauntlet but with some trepidation – Who were these other people? Will I be able to write with a total stranger? Will there be prima donnas, divas and tantrums? If I get writers block will they cast me out? Where on earth is this place anyway? It took less then a few hours for these fears to dispel and to be replaced by a magical mix of music, writing, creativity and laughter. Just 5 days later the Burnsong 8 took the stage for the first time to perform the astonishing 24 songs they had written in those few days. And what songs they were – moving, haunting, beautiful, soulful, sad, laugh out loud funny and even, at times, a little disco. Their performances during Burnsong –Live! proved what amazing things can be done when you give people the space and the freedom to experiment and create. It seemed that our experiment had worked, these 8 writers had come together and in such a short time created something truly special and unique, a true reflection of the real talent, imagination and passion for great music that exists in our country today. But it was not to end there, and with the support of Tune-Up the Burnsong Song House writers are going out on the road, bringing their songs and their stories to audiences around Scotland.
