My guest this week is 5 time MPG mastering engineer of the year Katie Tavini, who's work includes Rudimental, Bloc Party, Ash, We Are Scientists, Nadine Shah, Arlo Parks, Los Bitchos and many more. Since starting in 2014, Katie has grown to become one of the mostin-demand mastering engineers in the UK, who's at home with everything from the heaviest metal to the lushest orchestral works and everything in between. Katie is also a founding member of Weird Jungle, a collective of independent mastering engineers in the UK dedicated to helping bands, artists and labels release the best possible version of their work. During our interview Katie talked about becoming a mastering engineer, how mastering has changed in the last few years, things that mixers sometimes overlook, starting Weird Jungle, and so much more. I spoke with Katie via zoom from her studio in Liverpool. On the intro we look at how mainstream success isn't as big as it used to be, and in honor of Fathers Day, ultimate Dad Rock bands.
“If the song 2 doesn't grab you, you're sunk BABY” This week's guest Song 2-er (sic) is the always good value Keith Murray, of the prolifically great We Are Scientists… and while this intro may be longer than Keith's response, it does not contain a now immortal phrase, that, if we could get the rights sorted, we would have on a limited run of Song 2 tees.

We had the pleasure of interviewing We Are Scientists Zoom video!American rock band We Are Scientists debuted in the early aughts with the angular post-punk edge of With Love and Squalor, later evolving to incorporate polished synths and expanded atmospherics on efforts like 2016's Helter Seltzer, 2018's Megaplex, and 2021's Huffy. Although modestly popular in America, they were a hit in the U.K., where the group's sound -- part post-punk revival and part indie rock with a touch of '80s synth pop -- drew parallels to contemporaries like Editors, Franz Ferdinand, Interpol, and the Killers. Formed on the West Coast by three California-based college students, We Are Scientists officially took flight after frontman and guitar Keith Murray, bass player Chris Cain, and drummer Michael Tapper (who replaced founding drummer/vocalist Scott Lamb) relocated to Brooklyn and began building a small but devoted following. After releasing three EPs and one independent album -- Safety, Fun, and Learning (In That Order) -- the group signed with Virgin Records and released their major-label debut, With Love and Squalor, in early 2006. The effort peaked at ten on the Billboard Heatseekers chart and eventually was certified gold in the U.K. In 2008, We Are Scientists -- reduced to a duo comprising Cain and Murray after Tapper parted ways with the group -- put out their second full-length album, Brain Thrust Mastery. Produced by Ariel Rechtshaid, the set included the singles "After Hours" and "Chick Lit." As before, the record found popularity in the U.K., where it debuted at number 11 on the albums chart. In late 2012, the band entered the studio in New York with producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Gang Gang Dance, Blonde Redhead) to record sessions for their fourth record. Burrows relocated to the city from England while he worked with Murray and Cain to write and record tracks for the album. Titled TV en Français, it arrived in early 2014 on 100%/Dine Alone Records and featured appearances by Rose Elinor Dougall (Mark Ronson) and Tim Wheeler (Ash). In 2016, We Are Scientists returned with their fifth studio album, Helter Seltzer, produced by Max Hart (of Katy Perry's band). The effort charted in the Top 50 of the U.K. and Scottish charts. Two years later, they delivered their sixth effort, the polished Megaplex, also produced by Hart. The album featured the singles "Heart Is a Weapon," "Not Another Word," and "Your Light Has Changed."Following the 2020 launch of their own Dumpster Dive podcast, the group returned with the full-length Huffy in 2021. Although 2021's Huffy returned to a guitar-driven sound, Lobes, the band's eighth studio album, released early 2023, is their synthiest, electronic beatiest collection yet. So, really, who even is We Are Scientists? Founding We Are Scientists members Keith Murray (guitar) and Chris Cain (bass) have played with guys like Adam, Michael, Andy, Danny, Chris, Matt, and Gary on drums, but for over five years now have had Keith Carne, who looks like he isn't going anywhere. The band's previous singles “After Hours,” “Nobody Move, Nobody Get Hurt,” “The Great Escape,” “It's a Hit” and “Chick Lit” all have charted in the US/UK and the band have appeared on US late night talk shows, The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan and Carson Daly and performed at Coachella, Sasquatch, and All Points West festivals. In the UK, the band played the Reading and Leeds main stage and Glastonbury Festivals among other world-wide touring. The release of Lobes was celebrated with a very special hometown show at Brooklyn Made on January 20, 2023.We want to hear from you! Okay, from the off, let me make it clear that We Are Scientists – that'd be guitarist and singer Keith Murray and bassist Chris Cain – are managed by my wife. Nepotism? Shlepotism. But please do buy their excellent new album, their eighth, Lobes, which is out now on 100% Records! But even before me and my wife got together, which is a time in my life I just about remember, I was crossing paths with Keith and Chris as their band were favourites of everyone on staff at the NME when I worked there many moons ago. In this episode we get into all that good stuff, but this being Keith and Chris, we get into all manner of other fun stuff too. Once again, please buy Lobes! In episode #59 of The XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar catches up with Keith Murray and Chris Cain from US Indie band We Are Scientists to discuss their new album Huffy, their UK tour and loads more. Beloved indie heroes We Are Scientists return with their first album in 3 years. Huffy follows 2018's Megaplex and the enormously successful "50th-anniversary" reissue of With Love And Squalor. The new album is already shaping up to be one of the band's most hit-tastic albums to date with the inclusion of recently acclaimed bangers 'I Cut My Own Hair' and 'Fault Lines' alongside the new single 'Contact High'.
How do you add a flash of color into a grey world? It has to be a difficult task, especially as the remnants of 2020 are still around us in 2021. Luckily for us, We Are Scientists are pros at injecting joy into people's lives, with the proof being in the form of their latest album, Huffy (out now). The songs of the album are full of this pent-up energy that leaves you wanting to run outside with the sun hitting your face. That quality wasn't lost on the guys and throughout this episode, we chat about not only how, but also why they decided to make a very different kind of record.
Matt and Jay return to discuss the Scarlett Johansson lawsuit against Disney, what 1 concert with 1 band (or 2 or 3) that they would like to see, and their most anticipated MCU properties coming out over the next phase. This week's song is Contact High from We Are Scientists. Their new album Huffy will be out October 8th. We Are Scientists formed in Berkeley, Ca, in 2000. It consists primarily of guitarist and vocalist Keith Murray and bass guitarist Chris Cain, with drummer Keith Carne joining the band in the studio and for live performances since 2013. The band have released six studio albums, not including their early release Safety, Fun, and Learning, which the band have gone on to describe as more of a rough draft, than a proper album. The band's breakthrough success came with their debut studio album, With Love and Squalor, which sold 100,000 copies in the first six months. This was followed by the releases of Brain Thrust Mastery in 2008, Barbara in 2010, TV en Français in 2014, Helter Seltzer in 2016 and Megaplex in 2018. As well as music, Keith and Chris are known for their comedy, often injecting humour into their interviews, press-releases and off-the-cuff jokes at their live shows. This has been carried over as part of producing many of their own music video treatments and their 2009 series of television shorts Steve Wants His Money made for MTV, as well as a podcast series titled Dumpster Dive in 2020. JC and Clay get a chance to chat with Keith and Chris in a hilarious behind the music style interview that covers everything from the East Bay area music scene to losing an NME award to...NME. All this and much more on this latest edition of theFIVE10 Podcast!
We speculate about whether humans can be freed from romantic attraction, talk nude selfies in the age of coronavirus, and Chris clarifies for Keith several pieces of dialog from the hit TV series "The Big Bang Theory."
We hash out some of the problems with one of our very early, pre-signing hits, "Mothra vs. We Are Scientists," including misidentification of Mothra's gender and slipshod musicianship. Then we take issue with bands who named themselves after other bands' songs, which we have been incorrectly accused of doing ourselves.
