Being the closest Saturday to St. Patrick's Day this show was a celebration of Celtic music, with a lot of my favourite Irish artists to the fore. The new CD by Stephen Fearing was released yesterday, so this was a CiTR exclusive. Another exclusive at the end was a track recorded at The Rogue with Co. Clare fiddler Martin Hayes and the late Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill in 2017. These tunes were never recorded by the duo on any of their albums.
Martin Hayes is a world-renowned Irish fiddler from Feakle in east Clare, a place steeped in music and tradition. Martin is well known for his distinctive and soulful style of playing that blends traditional Irish music with innovative contemporary interpretations. He's an iconic figure in Irish music. From his early years winning multiple All-Ireland Fiddle Championships to his celebrated work with the late Dennis Cahill and The Gloaming, Martin is a man who brings great depth, expression and beauty to all that he does. It was a joy to have this chat with him and to hear about his early influences, his years in the US, his thoughts on mediation, music and culture, and his new life in Spain. This episode is also part of my Creative Souls of Clare podcast series, where you can find lots of great conversations with some of County Clare's leading creative lights. In this episode, Aoife is joined by fiddle-player Martin Hayes. Martin has chosen a selection of music for us to play on the programme, which, for him, are formative recordings and ones to which he returns all the time.
The Clare fiddler chats about his musical relationship with the late Dennis Cahill, pushing the boundaries of traditional music and performing soon with the National Symphony Orchestra for ‘Peggy's Dream', in tribute to his mother Peggy and Dennis Cahill (accompanied by Kate Ellis on cello) Concert details: www.nch.ie

More than just one of Ireland's most beloved musicians, Martin Hayes is also the author of Shared Notes: A Musical Journey. In his memoir he introduces us to a host of brilliant characters, ranging from childhood friends and relations in East Clare to those who would become central to The Gloaming. One figure we meet is Tommie Potts, a Dublin firefighter from the Coombe and a fiddle player. The Liffey Banks remains a beloved record. In this excerpt from a conversation at London's Féile MOTH, Hayes discusses Potts and revisits a tune that means much to him.
Today have the third and penultimate conversation from our Label Focus mini-series presented by Zara Hedderman. So far we've heard from Willie Stewart of Nyahh Records and Joey Edwards from Pizza Pizza Records and in this episode, you'll hear Zara speaking with Michael Roe, label and artist manager with Faction Records. Faction Records is coming close to reaching a massive milestone of 20 years in business after it was founded by Ken Allen in 2006. You may remember a compilation CD from around that time called Faction One and featured bands like Director, The Immediate, Republic of Loose and Future Kings of Spain amongst others. Today, populating Faction's roster of artists are a number of firm favourites with critics and audiences such as Sorcha Richardson, Niamh Regan, Martin Hayes, and Jape. Over the course of the chat Michael delved into the many ways that the industry is changing and how he and his colleagues at Faction work with their artists to develop their careers and prepare them to build their audience base and engage with international markets. In this regard, the conversation explores different elements of the business-side of the artist-label relationship and how important it is to have a plan but also not fear failure along the way. Zara and Michael discuss the impact of artists self-releasing their music and how that's changing the overall landscape and the importance of the relationships artists build with various media outlets and journalists. We'll have another episode, the final one in this series, very soon, but until then, here's Michael Roe of Faction Records.Keep up to date on Faction Records here:https://www.instagram.com/factionmusicieMusic featured:Annamoe Drive - Procrastinationhttps://anamoedrive.bandcamp.com/track/procrastinationNiamh Regan - Madonnahttps://niamhregan.bandcamp.com/track/madonnaSéan Joyce - My Facehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrE9V3Ccs7I

Willie Stewart runs Nyahh Records from his home in Co Leitrim. After releasing the brilliant I Am Kurdish by Mohammad Syfkhan in February, Willie talks about how that album came together and talks about Mohammad's story and musical output. Then he talks through other releases on the label, like Natalia Beylis' collaboration with Eimear Reidy, Ian Lynch's solo debut, and the two compilations from 2023: A Collection of Songs in the Traditional & Sean-Nós Style and Under the Island: Experimental Music in Ireland 1960-1994. Nyahh Records discography on Bandcamp: https://nyahhrecords.bandcamp.com/album/under-the-island-experimental-music-in-ireland-1960-1994 Ley Lines: https://daily.bandcamp.com/ley-lines/ley-lines-february-2024 Mohammad Syfkhan tour dates: March 28: Record Room, Limerick March 29: Bello Bar, Dublin April 4: Vicar Street (Gig for Gaza, w/ ØXN, Junior Brother, Pretty Happy) Mohammad Syfkhan is a Kurdish/Syrian Singer and Bouzouki player. He began playing music in 1980 while he was in college studying nursing. When he got his degree in 1983, Mohammad moved to the city of Raqqa, Syria where he began working as a professional singer and started his own band, The Al-Rabie Band which played concerts, parties, weddings and festivals all over Syria. The Al-Rabie Band were a much sought-after group. Their live sets included Kurdish, Arabic, Turkish and some Western songs as well as Mohammad's own original material. Mohammad continued to play with his band while also working as a surgical nurse until the war broke out in 2011. This unfortunately brought tragedy to Mohammad's family when one of his sons was killed by Isis thus threatening the lives of the rest of his family. His family had no choice but to leave their home and seek safety in Europe. Three of Mohammad's sons were resettled in Germany while Mohammad, his young daughter and wife were taken in by Ireland. Mohammad has spoken at length of his confusion and despair with fundamentalists and how their message is a far cry from the teachings of love and understanding that he considers the true message of Islam. Since arriving in Ireland, Mohammad has used the language of music to integrate into the local community by playing at private parties and concerts. He regularly plays at weddings and events for the Kurdish and Syrian communities all over Ireland and in Germany. He has collaborated with such Irish artists as Martin Hayes, Cormac Begley, Eimear Reidy, Cathal Roche and Vincent Woods. In 2023 he opened for Lankum at the Cork Opera House and received huge applause from the packed out room. Mohammad's own brand of ecstatic music takes elements from Middle Eastern and North African music to create an atmosphere of joy, love and happiness. The songs on ‘I am Kurdish' have been recorded and mixed with the view to make them to suitable for listening to at a small get together or to be played on a big rig at night clubs. Either way, it is a record that will make people dance. Three of the tracks on the album feature accompaniment by two fellow Leitrim-based musicians: composer, improviser, sound artist and saxophonist Cathal Roche and composer, improviser and cellist Eimear Reidy. Mohammad says: “I thank everyone who has stood with me and supported me. And I especially thank the Irish people who have engaged with my music in such a wonderful way. I consider myself lucky to have come to this wonderful country that has welcomed me and all refugees. I thank God for everything, and now, thanks to this wonderful country, I am a musician and have a safe home. Thank you to the Irish government and people for giving me the honour of calling this country my home.”

Chief Executive of the Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) Deborah Annetts reflects on the new House of Commons committee report on misogyny in music and whether it can bring about lasting change in the music industry. Plus we hear from choir members in Hackney as they take part in Sing East - a showcase for talented choirs from across East London in which the BBC Singers and BBC Symphony Chorus joined over 200 local performers for a celebration of song.

Martin Hayes is an internationally renowned Irish fiddler beloved for his expressive playing and his collaborations with many great musicians in different genres including Bill Frisell, Sting, Paul Simon and more recently Yo Yo Ma with the Silk Road Project. During this episode we spoke of his wonderful book Shared Notes, and he plays some beautiful music live (you can always use the timestamps if you're curious to jump to some music right away), but I encourage you to listen through the whole episode. Martin speaks eloquently about life, culture, friendship, identity, and staying true to what you value, and I hope this episode will thrill lovers of Irish music and bring new listeners to many of Martin's projects including The Common Ground Ensemble, The Gloaming, and many more. We talked about the loss and legacy of Dennis Cahill, how he met Thomas Bartlett, the rich depths of traditional music that Martin learned from the older generation, and the rhythm of life growing up on the farm in County Clare. I receive dozens of new music submissions and requests for radio interview every week. I do my best to respond to or sample them all. It doesn't take long to get way behind in the exercise. One such request for a phone interview came to me on behalf of the renown fiddler in the Irish tradition, Martin Hayes. I had not heard of Martin (shame on me) and my direct contact with Irish traditional music was rather limited even though I had a basic understanding that most of so-called Americana and Folk Music was rooted in Irish and Celtic music forms. I've been to the massive Irish Fest and the Irish Center here in Kansas City… my local pub Conroy's even has live traditional Irish music from time to time. These touchpoints do not begin to honor what awaited me when I went down the Martin Hayes' rabbit hole …diving into the stories, catalogues and career of Martin and some of his colleagues past and present. I am so very glad I did not scroll past the initial request and instead took the opportunity to spend some one on one time with a musician that, in his sphere of influence, should come to be compared to the likes of Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix. Enjoy my conversation with the virtuoso player and stellar human being, Ireland's Martin Hayes.
