Where it stands right now, LSU football has only two scholarship cornerbacks on the roster. One is Sevyn Banks, an Ohio State transfer who has been on and off the field due to injury for a majority of his career. Second, is Laterrance Welch who redshirted this past year and has very little college football experience. Overall, the cornerback position needs depth and experience and it needs it badly for the 2023 season. In comes, Javien Toviano, a four star cornerback prospect from Dallas, TX who just announced his commitment to LSU on Thursday. What are his strengths and weaknesses and what can he bring this LSU CB room in his true freshman season? What is so big about his commitment, both for the 2023 season and beyond? Plus, one of the top cornerbacks in the 2023 recruiting class, Desmond Ricks, is high on LSU and is on campus this weekend taking an official visit before he makes his decision. Ricks is a 5-star recruit from IMG Academy who, according to SI.com recruiting insider John Garcia Jr., has played with the best, competed with the best, and is ready to do that right away at the college level. So how does Toviano's commitment impact Ricks' decision? How does Toviano's commitment affect commitments at other positions as well? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Locked On Canes - Daily Podcast On Miami Hurricanes Football & Basketball
The Miami Hurricanes lost at home to the Duke Blue Devils 45-21 in a game where the Canes committed 8 turnovers. Nobody in FBS has turned it over that many times in a game since 2017. Miami lost starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke to an upper body injury in the second quarter and backup Jake Garcia threw three interceptions, including a pick-6. Garcia did hit long touchdown passes to Will Mallory and Colbie Young in the game, but Miami coughed it up too many times and kept giving momentum back to Duke. Host Alex Donno talks about which errors can be blamed directly on coaching and which times talent let them down. Miami seems a bit too aggressive in going for it on 4th down, especially when they struggle so much to pick up a yard or two on the ground. Sometimes it's best to trust your punter and kicker. However, coaching cannot be blamed for five fumbles and three interceptions. Donno reads quotes from Mario Cristobal, who challenged his players after the loss. Anyone who isn't showing heart and effort can find somewhere else to play. Donno discusses the challenges in keeping the 2023 recruiting class together and adding to it with other blue chip players. Can Miami keep blue chippers like Francis Mauigoa, Jaden Rashada and Jayden Wayne invested through signing day? Can they keep enough momentum on the trail to convince someone like 5-star Samson Okunlola or 4-star Damari Brown to pick The U. Plus, 5-star 2024 cornerback Desmond Ricks from IMG Academy will be re-classifying to 2023. Will he join several of his high school teammates at Miami?Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Desmond Ricks spent 25 years behind bars and was released in 2017 Ricks was convicted in 1992 for fatally shooting a friend outside a restaurant but continued to maintain his innocence He was vindicated after gun experts and University of Michigan law students helped prove his innocence On Tuesday, Ricks won a $7.5 million settlement by the city of Detroit Ricks claimed police switched the bullets to frame him for the murder The bullets that were used in the fatal shooting did not resemble the bullets examined at the trial decades earlier During depositions in the lawsuit, even the city's expert acknowledged that the bullet analysis by the police lab decades ago was flat-out wrong
The City of Detroit has agreed to pay $7.5 million to settle a lawsuit by a man who claimed police framed him for murder. Desmond Ricks was convicted of fatally shooting a friend outside a Detroit restaurant in 1992. He was released from prison in 2017 after serving 25 years in prison. The Innocence Clinic at University of Michigan law school asked a judge to reopen the case after photos of two bullets taken from the victim did not resemble the bullets that were examined by a defense expert decades earlier. The actual bullets didn't match the gun police said Ricks used in the shooting.
Hello everyone, happy Wednesday, and welcome to Noles News Now, the latest in Florida State Seminoles sports, brought to you by Tomahawk Nation. I'm your host Perry Kostidakis — let's jump right in. The big news of the day — a move that's been predicted for a bit and finally came into fruition — on Tuesday, four-star quarterback Chris Parson decided to reopen his recruitment, decommitting from the Seminoles. Parson, who had been committed to Florida State for just under a year, said he had long coveted playing in Tallahassee but needed to make a move that assured his future — it's been reported and confirmed by his father that he wasn't interested in being part of a two-quarterback class. FSU has been extremely open about the fact that it wants two quarterbacks — it seems that they were hoping that Parson would want to be part of that plan, but as soon as fellow four-star and Elite 11 quarterback Brock Glenn began to receive crystal balls to FSU, the writing was on the wall. It's a temporary hit in terms of PR, given the news of Desmond Ricks's claims of FSU cutting off contact getting plenty of traction with disgruntled fans and gleeful rivals, but overall, FSU has been doing a lot of good on the trail. Four-star, blue-chip NFL talent Lucas Simmons committed to FSU on Monday — if you haven't, check out the Florida State of Recruiting that dropped that talks about Simmons' game and who else might be joining #Tribe23. In this day in conference realignment rumors, the Dallas Morning News is reporting that SMU has been in discussions with the Big 12, the ACC, and the Pac-12. While that sounds cool if you were playing NCAA 13, it really doesn't do too much to add to the value of the conference, which is the main issue plaguing FSU and the rest of the ACC right now as the era of megaconferences looms closer and closer. Outside of that, it's been a relatively quiet week with summer in full swing. Make sure you're keeping posted to TomahawkNation.com for all the latest in FSU sports — not only can you find quick updates on everything FSU, but we've got plenty of deep-dive content and conversation with community popping. The Florida State Seminoles continue their hot streak on the trail, with Mike Norvell and staff scooping up another crucial commitment along the trenches. Offensive tackle Lucas Simmons has jumped aboard the Tribe ‘23 train, becoming FSU's best true OT pledge in a decade. FSU previously secured pledges from two key prospects in defensive lineman Keldric Faulk and offensive lineman Roderick Kearney. All three are four-star, blue-chip prospects and are now the top-rated commits in FSU's 2023 class. What is FSU getting in Simmons, and how soon should he see the field? Will Florida State be adding to its 2023 class soon, with July decisions expected from QB Brock Glenn, RB Daylan Smothers, and potentially more targets? Tell us if you've heard this before? Top defensive back recruit states that Florida State is no longer their top option. Well, what if the fellas here at Locked On Seminoles kicked it up a notch and told you that FSU isn't even a top 10 option for what was not only a can't miss prospect but one who was on the verge of committing not too long ago. Well, Max and Drake of your favorite Florida State Seminoles daily sports podcast are here to chop it up about the state of recruiting under Mike Norvell. Desmond Ricks was to be the bell cow of a class that was in a huge need of a pick me up, just a few days removed form the commitment of much needed defensive end Keldrick Faulk and before the potential landing of Lucas Simmons, the 5-star defensive back of the 2024 class stated that Florida State has not even kept up with him over the passing months. The boys address what they make of this, what they are hearing around the program and also what they thing needs to be changed when it comes to recruiting cause as of right now, things needs to be shaken up a bit for the Seminoles staff. To wrap up today, Mandatory Mailbag Monday concludes with some last minute touches on other impol9cations when it comes to moving conferences and what that would mean not only for the team but what should be the fan perception/expectations that comes with conference realignment. This is a high honor to be a part of the top 10 ESPN list and this just cements everything we said about him last week. His ability to generate turnovers sets him apart.Jackson State was a finalist for Peter Woods before he committed to Clemson. They are now finalist for Desmond Ricks. Is being a finalist for the top recruits enough? I say yes but for how long? This is what the hunger and competitiveness of recruiting is all aboutChelsey Lucas tells her side of the story in an interview with 247 sports. She says she didn't cut all the players from Grambling's volleyball team but was instructed to do so by the AD. Chelsey Lucas says she didn't cut all the players from Grambling's volleyball team but was instructed to do so by the AD, and is being a finalist for recruits like Peter Woods and Desmond Ricks good enough for HBCUs still? Former South Carolina State and current Indianapolis Colts LB Darius Leonard was listed as the best LB in the NFL by a poll of his peers, coaches, and executives. This is a high honor to be a part of the top 10 ESPN list and this just cements everything we said about him last week. His ability to generate turnovers sets him apart. Jackson State was a finalist for Peter Woods before he committed to Clemson. They are now finalist for Desmond Ricks. Is being a finalist for the top recruits enough? I say yes but for how long? This is what the hunger and competitiveness of recruiting is all about Chelsey Lucas tells her side of the story in an interview with 247 sports. She says she didn't cut all the players from Grambling's volleyball team but was instructed to do so by the AD. In this interview, she also details how she did cut the whole team and believes a former player from a past college inspired the Grambling players to create a calculated plan against her before she was even fired. Hello everyone, happy Monday — hope you all had a great weekend, welcome in to Noles News Now, the latest in Florida State Seminoles sports, presented by Tomahawk Nation. I'm your host Perry Kostidakis — let's hop right in. Another big day in FSU recruiting — offensive lineman Lucas Simmons, a blue-chip prospect with legitimate NFL potential, is set to announce his choice of college today at 1 p.m. at a ceremony in Clearwater. Simmons is a Swedish native but isn't exactly a stranger to the game — his father, Able, is a former Oklahoma Sooners offensive lineman. The Seminoles seem to be the favorite to land the 6-7, 300-pound tackle — not only has offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Alex Atkins managed to continue his impressive streak of getting top talent interest in Tallahassee, but FSU was one of the first schools to offer Simmons prior to his recruitment blowing up — a common theme so far for the Seminoles, one that has either been a key factor in snagging talent or an ironic asterisk as that talent moved on to another program. Our recruiting trio talked about his recruitment on our latest Florida State of Recruiting podcast — I'm sure we'll hear a bit more about it in the coming days, wink wink. FSU has had an impressive run in the trenches as of late — but got a bit of a Twitter timeline drag on Sunday when Hayes Fawcett, a graphic designer who puts out edits for the majority of the top recruits in the country, shared a quote from top 2024 defensive back Desmond Ricks, who says he wanted to commit to FSU, then they stopped talking to him, and that was that. That naturally stirred up the fanbase, but a little bit more insight showed that maybe, possibly, that post was some strategic planting via a rival school, one that has been seemingly getting more ballsy by the day when it comes to recruiting. Fawcett had several posts before and after that graphic exchanging praise and messages with the Miami Hurricanes staff — which even if there was something fishy going on, the point remains that that quote was blasted out on the social medias, and several high-profile recruits commented on it echoing similar complaints. While it's not a nail in the coffin situation, it's one that should have Mike Norvell and staff on high alert, even moreso than they were already heading into a season that has a chance to define his tenure. Outside of that, nothing major in realignment news — though, there is a chance that given the way the rest of the news so far around it has broken, by the time you listen to this, there's been some shocking new development. Last we left off, we had two major reports — one, from major media outlets reporting the Pac-12 and ACC exploring a potential partnership, the other from a single person who runs a swimming publication that Virginia, UNC, FSU, and Clemson are negotiating to join the SEC, with ESPN willing and ready to void the ACC's television contract. While bigger news has come from unlikelier sources, and it is almost definitely true that those schools (as well as others in the ACC) are looking for a way out, it's not exactly good business for ESPN to dissolve the contract that guarantees it a great deal for the next 14 years. The ACC and Pac-12 merger doesn't solve anything — or help FSU Kalen DeLoach's next step is crucial for FSU's defense You can listen to more discussion on that on the Seminole Wrap, where Brian Pellerin and I talk about the latest as well the best move for FSU, or you can share your frustrations at the stupidity that is the PACCt by heading to TomahawkNation.com and reading Juan Montalvo's analysis of why it is a terrible idea for everybody. This surely is not an episode you want to miss. As always, we here at Locked On Seminoles thank each and every single one of you for the love and support. Desmond Ricks, one of the country's top recruits in 2024, says he no longer has contact with Florida State's coaching staff. It's a damning statement, one Ricks hasn't backed down from. Meanwhile, FSU sources indicate that communication wasn't totally cut off. This development is just part of the story. Other recruits have weighed in on Ricks' comments to imply they also similarly lost communication with FSU, and there's a trend of some recruitments going in odd directions abruptly. We try to make the most of the situation with the information we have in this episode of On The Bench. The Ricks debacle serves as a jumping-off point for other trends regarding strange twists and turns with various positions on FSU's recruiting board. Plus we preview the upcoming decision of OT Lucas Simmons, realignment insight, and more. You can subscribe to On The Bench on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts and Spotify. As always, five-star reviews and comments on Apple Podcasts are appreciated! Also, you can watch the show on YouTube now. Penn State recruiting is still in a dead period, so it's a great time to look ahead to the Class of 2024. So that's what happens on the Friday edition of the BWI Daily. Host Thomas Frank Carr and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder begin the initial foray into the sophomores, standing out and getting offers from Penn State. They get to that after discussing the news about the Class of 2023 that dropped on Thursday. Penn State commit Jven Williams earned a fifth star from On3, so T-Frank and Snyder discuss the implications for Penn State's 2023 cycle to have a five-star player. It matters for several reseasons that Snyder explains. Could it attract another high-quality offensive lineman? Snyder doesn't think that's the case but does point to other areas in the class it might affect. After that, they start in on quarterbacks for the Class of 2024. Again, Snyder gives the blanket statement that it's early for every position, but he's identified three players Penn state is interested in pursuing. The top player in the nation is North Carolina native Jaydn Davis, but Penn State might have a realistic shot with a different Jayden. Jayden Bradford from South Carolina is an intriguing prospect, Snyder explains. The running back position has high-level offers in Florida, including IMG Academy's Stacy Gage. Still, athlete Quinton Martin from Belle Vernon is possibly the highest priority player in the class. From there, the receiver is an extensive list for Snyder, but not a very clear one at the moment, just like tight end. They hit the offensive line next, with a committed player in Erie native Cooper Cousins. Who else could join Cousins? Jordan Seaton and Peter Jones are two names that come to mind in another very long list. On the other side of the ball, it's another deep class at the defensive end position. So, who are the players that stand out? T-Frank is high on 6-6 Dominic Nichols, while Snyder brings up two other regional players with a high profile inside the Lasch building. Defensive tackle is another deep list with some talent but more questions. Richard James Jr and Jahsear Whittington need to grow some but are intriguing prospects at 6-0 tall. According to T-Frank and Snyder, linebacker Anthony Specca is the highlight of the linebacker group and possibly one of the best players in the state. So what would hold him back? Snyder's information makes him want to see more from Specca this upcoming season. Finally, the defensive backs are stocked with talent in the region this year. But that talent is heading south to IMG. Regional corner prospects Desmond Ricks and Ellis Robinson are heading south for their high school careers. That makes it much harder for Penn State to stay in contact and get an early foothold with them. Snyder then goes through the rest of the corners that are staying local and then checks out the safeties to finish the show. #PennState #NittanyLions JOIN Blue White Illustrated: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/join/?plan=annual SUBSCRIBE to Blue White Illustrated on YouTube and enable alerts - new highlights and videos uploaded regularly: https://www.youtube.com/c/bluewhiteillustratedvideo?sub_confirmation Bookmark our homepage: https://www.on3.com/teams/penn-state-nittany-lions/ Subscribe to BWI Magazine and Newsletters: http://bluewhiteonline.com Download our podcasts: https://cms.megaphone.fm/channel/LRL3155877513?selected=DSVV2664982394 Like us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/BlueWhiteIllustrated/ Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/PennStateOn3 Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com Learn more about your ad choices.
