Spiral) By Junji Ito English Translation by Yuji Oniki Special thanks to @Nirakirameart for today's tribute illustration. Topics: Reminiscent to ‘Final Destination’ where death is quantitative and systematic. What makes it frightening is how you can be aware of its workings yet still be powerless because of concepts like manifest destiny, divine fate and the fact that death is simply a universal force of nature. Or Lovecraft, where the enemy is invisible, the spiral too is a force of nature, it too is universal. The model/actor (a.k.a. star) system, Ito would use the likeness of Uzumaki’s Kirie and Shuichi for Dissolving Classroom’s Keiko and Azeri. (Osamu did this system first) Similarities to the horror of RL Stine and Hino’s Horror manga. Only truly scary story is what happens to Shuichi’s mother, because mental illness = frightening. Other media Videogame for wonderswan (Gunpei Yokoi, sold 3 mill units but only 8% market share.) Curse simulator, you play as an agent of the spiral curse. Gathering items and planting them. Film – directed by Higuchinsky and released in 2000, if you're interested then James recommends you see the movies directed by David Lynch, Shinya Tsukamoto and Hideo Nakata. Animated mini-series 2021 Colin Stetson does the score. (known for his work on Heredetary and Red Dead Redemption 2) Why the spiral? (The golden ratio / Fibonacci sequence) The Fibonacci sequence starts like this: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55 and so on forever. Each number is the sum of the two numbers that precede it. It's a simple pattern, but it appears to be a kind of built-in numbering system to the cosmos. It’s the code that nature seems to abide to. Synopsis: Set in the seaside town of Kurouzo Cho, Kirie Goshima and her boyfriend Shuichi Saito slowly witness a sinister force plague their town. At first Shuichi’s father becomes obsessed about spirals. His obsession leads towards his death and afterwards Shuichi’s mother is quick to succumb to what Shuichi refers to as “the curse of the spiral”. Shuichi Saito’s father loved all things spiral related, his mother, starts to fear all things spiral related. Soon Shuichi is orphaned and becomes a recluse. Although as the spiral curse causes many episodes of horror Shuichi is still available when Kirie needs him most. These episodes include souls imprisoned within pottery, Kirie’s spiralling hair having a parasitic mind of its own, schoolboys turning into snails as if they were infected with a virus and a deadly light house.   During these episodes, Shuichi protects Kirie from a sentient hurricane, however as part of the spiral curse the town becomes a magnet to hurricanes and sink holes, sending kurouzo Cho into a wasteland that isolates its residents. The residents are only safe inside the old row houses, which remain oddly immune to the malevolent elements. And when overcrowding becomes an issue, Kirie and Shuichi set out to escape. Unfortunately they become lost in the woods, when they spiral back into the town they planned to leave, they find that they have been in a time vortex and what seemed like a short time in the woods has been years past for Kurouzo Cho, on their return the row houses have become extended and formed into a spiral building. Essentially one long spiralling house, this leads into a well like chasm where the lake once existed but is now dried up. It’s the centre of the spiral that Kirie and Shuichi find themselves drawn towards, and where ultimately their fate is sealed. Ariana Grande, we’re looking at you! ·       ‘Dissolving Beauty’ being a commentary on body dysmorphia and anorexia in an age of social media. ·       Did the last chapter have a downer ending?     Synopsis:   Dissolving Classrom –   The new boy in class, Yuuma Azawa, is known for his overly apologetic behaviour and becomes a target for bullies because of it. Keiko Arisu befriends him out of pity but is quickly stalked and harassed by a creepy girl on her way home. The girl demands to suck out and feast upon her brains.  In an attempt to flee, Keio gets ran over crossing the road.   As Keiko recovers in hospital, Yuuma apologises for his sister, Chizumi, the girl who scared and chased Keiko into the road. Yuuma visits her in hospital and it becomes apparent that keiko is feeling the soothing effects of his apologies, as if her mind and body, not just her worries, were melting away. Behind Yuuma’s back, Keiko finds his home in order to speak to Chizumi and befriend her.   Chizumi explains that her brother doesn’t apologise for her sake but for himself, he is addicted to apologising and has become a devil worshipper. Keiko is scared away when Chizumi reveals the decrepit heads of her dead parents, their brains having been melted away.   Chizumi believes the heads were fake but she is still left unsettled when a flu like sickness grips her parents and herself. On her return to school she finds that her class has become sick as well. Keiko goes to protect Yuuma from his bullies but finds that the bullies all physically melt in front of her. Chizumi arrives in the middle of a devastating attack on the school, everyone is melting away into goo. She explains to Keiko that Yuuma has the power to melt people via his apologies and Chizumi herself loves to drink and lick up what’s left of them. Keiko flees from the siblings and survives.   Chizumi in love –   As the two siblings settle in a new place to live, Chizumi falls in love with a young boy of the same age, Tomohito, who is quickly stalked by Chizumi. Tomohito’s parents melt away due to Yuuma’s apologising but with a bit of luck, and through help of the spirits of those who were melted, Tomohito is able to escape Yuuma and Chizumi.   Interview with the Devil –   Eventually a journalist called Hamaoka is able to track down the siblings and bring a paralysed Keiko to meet with Yuuma. Keiko can’t walk but is able to manage some speech. Upon seeing Yuuma she is unsettled and starts to scream. Chizumi is surprised to see that Keiko is alive, considering any girl that Yuuma dates, tends to have their face physically melt whenever he compliments their looks.   Yuuma burns the remains of his dead parents and flees town with Chizumi.  Tomohito is found dead which makes Keiko the only survivor of the Dissolving incident. Hamaoka explains that Keiko developed psychic powers from her brain damage and is able to know where Yuuma is, he puts her hand on a map and her finger guides the way. Eventually Hamaoka manages to set up a press conference for Yuuma and Chizumi with plans to live stream it. To Keiko’s horror, Hamaoka brings her to watch. Yuuma doesn’t actually confess but apologises for the murders towards everyone at the conference and the world. On this show, they discuss several horror manga that will get you in the mood for Halloween tomorrow. As they did last year, the Two Manga Guys are both thrilled and chilled with by introducing listeners to a variety creepy titles, some older and some brand new. They begin with Katsuhiro Otomo's Domu: A Child's Dream (Dark Horse Manga), a story that is probably the least horrific of those discussed, but it's nonetheless one of the guys' favorites on this episode. As the guys point out, it's a shame that Otomo's canonical Akira tends to overshadows other impressive efforts such as Domu. After that they look at a markedly different kind of horror manga, Hideshi Hino's Panorama of Hell (Blast Books). This is a very violent and blood-filled work, so if you have a weak reading constitution, this might be a challenge for you. After that they cover the three-volume Mail, written and drawn by Housui Yamazaki (Dark Horse Manga). As Derek describes, this is a "lighter" narrative compared to some of the others discussed, but one that nonetheless has them wanting more. From there Shea and Derek turn to a favorite creator of theirs, Junji Ito. However, his latest graphic cycle, Dissolving Classroom (Vertical Comics) is definitely not what they have come to expect from the horror mangaka. Somewhat similar to Fragments of Horror, which the guys discussed last year, Ito relies a little too heavily on over-the-top graphics at the expense of any bedrock terror. But the guys are more impressed with Gou Tanabe's H.P. Lovecraft's The Hound and Other Stories (Dark Horse Manga), an adaptation of three classic Lovecraft stories. In addition to the titular reference, Tanabe also presents manga versions of "The Temple" and "The Nameless City." Finally, Shea and Derek discuss Neo Parasyte M (Kodansha Comics), the latest anthology inspired by Hitoshi Iwaaki's Parasyte, which ran between 1988 and 1995. Including contributions from a wide variety of creators, this volume is similar to last year's Neo Parasyte F, which the guys discussed on the 2016 manga horror episode. However, they enjoyed this anthology even more than last year's.
