In which the Mister joins me in reviewing AKIRA (1988), currently available on Funimation, Hulu and to buy/rent on Amazon.  From the manga and directed by Katsuhiro Ôtomo, with a screenplay credit to Katsuhiro Ôtomo and Izô Hashimoto, the film is set in Neo Tokyo 2019, 31 years after WWIII.  Kaneda (Mitsuo Iwata) and Tetsuo (Nozomu Sasaki) are longtime friends who now are part of a biker gang that inhabits this new world.  An accident finds Tetsuo taken to a secret government facility where Tetsuo's new developing powers seem to be going out of control and shades of history repeating itself soon surface.  Will Tetsuo destroy Neo Tokyo like Akira did in 1988?  Shout out to Andrew from film discussion group for the recommendation. The film was innovative for its time, introduced Western audiences to anime, has a run time of 2 h and 4m and is rated R.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep) يتغلب كيس ومولي على التدخلات القانونية السيبرانية ومحاولة خيانة من ريفيرا لدمج وينترميوت مع نيورومانسر، وينتهي الأمر بكيس يعيش في عالم جديد شجاعأفلام:·        Escape from New York (1981)[40][41]·        Burst City (1982)[42]·        Tron (1982)[43]·        Blade Runner (1982)[44]·        Brainstorm (1983)[45]·        Videodrome (1983)[46]·        Repo Man (1984)·        The Terminator (1984)·        Brazil (1985)·        RoboCop (1987)[47]·        The Running Man (1987)·        Gunhed (1989)[48]·        Tetsuo: The Iron Man (1989)·        Circuitry Man (1990)[49]·        RoboCop 2 (1990)·        Hardware (a.k.a.

He meets the landlord who tells him of the suspicious types, the drunk Yoshikawa who is still unemployed after a leg injury, Mrs. Tezuka, a mentally unstable woman in apartment 783 who walks around at night pushing the pram of her dead child. A gigantic man with a mind of a child, nicknamed Little Yo, he was accused of child molestation. Then there’s Shojiro  a.k.a old sho, an old senile man who sits outside. We also learn about Tsutomu Sasaki, an underachieving student who still lives with his parents. Yamagawa sends two policemen to patrol at night but one goes missing, his gun is never found. Eventually Yamagawa arrives alone at the complex and confronts the killer. Knowing that the killer is collecting trophies, Yamagawa gives him his pager. The killer is petty and breaks the pager using his psychic powers. Yamagawa runs after the psychic killer. He runs up the tower of apartments and hears the killer prying into his mind. Taunting him on every doubt and teasing him. When Yamagawa makes his way to the roof he finds the door is already open and he hesitates to step forward. There he sees Old Cho playing with the gun as if it were a toy.   One morning later, a new kid on the block arrives, her name is Etsuko, during her arrival Old Cho causes a baby to fall from the tower block. The child is saved by Etsuko and having read old cho’s thoughts she tells him off. Etsuko quickly makes friends with the residents but having an affinity for outsiders she chooses to play with Yoshikawa’s son, the lonely Hiroshi and Little Yo. As the sun falls Etsuko quickly makes her way to the shop, during this time Tsutomu Sasaki spends the knife choosing to craft model planes instead of study.   Cho takes control of Tsutomu and forces him to confront Etsuko on the elevator, failing to kill her with his craft knife, Tsutomu turns the blade onto himself and cuts through his own neck. Etsuko is hospitalised across the street. After seeing Yamagawa’s ghost, inspector Takayama brings a shaman to the housing complex but the shaman becomes overwhelmed by what she feels, unbeknownst to Takayama, Etsuko is making an attempt on empowering Old Cho from her bed window but is easily distracted by her mother.   At night, Yoshikawa is caught under control by Cho and is given the policeman’s gun so to kill Etsuko. Little Yo and Hiroshi do there best to hold him off and protect her whilst she hunts down Old Cho. It becomes clear that Cho struggles to fight her, he decides to create a gas explosion all around the housing complex. Etsuko smashes out the windows but fails to stop one explosion.   She almost kills Old Cho but he flees amongst the fire brigade. The building collapses and the stressed-out Etsuko loses her friends within the chaos. She endures an emotional breakdown and kills a fireman in the process. Cho soon disappears and Etsuko returns to her mother. Inspector Takayama has the chance to question Old Cho, but visions of Yamagawa’s ghost pre-empt him. Takayami decides to set him free and watch him from a safe distance, specifically Old Cho’s usual place, the bench by the play area. He watches Old Cho but no one can see that Etsuko is there sat on the swing doing the same. No one except for Old Cho. With a look from Etsuko the killer’s walking stick explodes and the old man finally dies. There is no sign of Etsuko, it’s as if she was never there that day.   Instagram –  weappreciatemanga.co.uk Twitter - @RealJamesFitton Website – Weappreciatemanga.com Email – Weappreciatemanga@gmail.com

New episodes are released every second Saturday at 6pm GMT, with the occasional bonus episode between them. This year, we are proud to continue the tradition of Anime April, a fortnight looking at two of the animated Japanese films on the list. This year, we watched a double feature of Hayao Miyazaki's Kaze no tani no Naushika and Katsuhiro Ôtomo's Akira. This week, the first part of the double bill, Akira, set in the then-distant future of 2019. In the streets of Neo-Tokyo, an entire generation is left to fend for itself. Against a backdrop of reckless violence and urban chaos, as the city seems ready to burn to the ground around them, teenagers Tetsuo and Kaneda have forged a friendship rooted in desperation and necessity. However, everything changes when Tetsuo has a fleeting encounter with a strange child, and opens doors to possibilities that were previously unimaginable. At time of recording, it was ranked the 249th best movie of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

Bom podcast!

They discuss how Akira fits into the contexts of animated films, Japanese history, and life in general (everything from Sonic Youth to Katsushika Hokusai). Martin and Zachary also get into the follies of Hollywood remakes, with the threat of a live action adaptation of Akira dangling over all our heads.

On this show, they discuss several horror manga that will get you in the mood for Halloween tomorrow. As they did last year, the Two Manga Guys are both thrilled and chilled with by introducing listeners to a variety creepy titles, some older and some brand new. They begin with Katsuhiro Otomo's Domu: A Child's Dream (Dark Horse Manga), a story that is probably the least horrific of those discussed, but it's nonetheless one of the guys' favorites on this episode. As the guys point out, it's a shame that Otomo's canonical Akira tends to overshadows other impressive efforts such as Domu. After that they look at a markedly different kind of horror manga, Hideshi Hino's Panorama of Hell (Blast Books). This is a very violent and blood-filled work, so if you have a weak reading constitution, this might be a challenge for you. After that they cover the three-volume Mail, written and drawn by Housui Yamazaki (Dark Horse Manga). As Derek describes, this is a "lighter" narrative compared to some of the others discussed, but one that nonetheless has them wanting more. From there Shea and Derek turn to a favorite creator of theirs, Junji Ito. However, his latest graphic cycle, Dissolving Classroom (Vertical Comics) is definitely not what they have come to expect from the horror mangaka. Somewhat similar to Fragments of Horror, which the guys discussed last year, Ito relies a little too heavily on over-the-top graphics at the expense of any bedrock terror. But the guys are more impressed with Gou Tanabe's H.P. Lovecraft's The Hound and Other Stories (Dark Horse Manga), an adaptation of three classic Lovecraft stories. In addition to the titular reference, Tanabe also presents manga versions of "The Temple" and "The Nameless City." Finally, Shea and Derek discuss Neo Parasyte M (Kodansha Comics), the latest anthology inspired by Hitoshi Iwaaki's Parasyte, which ran between 1988 and 1995. Including contributions from a wide variety of creators, this volume is similar to last year's Neo Parasyte F, which the guys discussed on the 2016 manga horror episode. However, they enjoyed this anthology even more than last year's.

On this episode of the monthly manga show, Derek and Shea discuss the recently published Henshin, by Ken Niimura (Image Comics), and Katsuhiro Otomo's classic Akira (Kodansha Comics). They begin with Henshin, a thirteen-story collection from the artist behind I Kill Giants (and written by Joe Kelly). Shea points out that it's difficult to find much information on Niimura, as most of his work has been published in either Japan or in Spain. But Henshin — which means “transformation” in Japanese —- may be a good introduction to his work. As the guys point out, the stories cover a variety of genres, from crime to cooking to sports to salaryman narratives  There are also four autobiographical shorts interspersed throughout. Neither Shea nor Derek feel that these tales are as successful as the non-autobiographical stories, but they do show a lighter and more personal side of Niimura's work. The tone in the other nine pieces are more dramatic, and at times tender and even melancholic. All in all, the collection is a multifaceted example of a non-traditional kind of manga. Next, the Two Guys look at a classic manga title, Otomo's Akira. This series is a challenge to discuss, because it's a sprawling saga that develops over six collected and thick volumes. But Derek and Shea highlight the premise and significance of the story, contextualizing it within the 1980s and as an example of post-apocalyptic cyberpunk storytelling. They briefly compare the manga to the anime version, pointing out many of the stark differences between the two. Shea emphasizes what he sees as the Western or European storytelling influence on Akira —- indeed, he sees the same in Henshin —- yet at the same time highlights this as a seminal work of manga. This is an ambitious attempt for the guys to cover such a title, and they could easily devote an entire episode to the series. But listeners will come away with a sense of the story, if they're not already familiar with it, and hear some of the major critical points that define Akira. If you're interested in manga, this is definitely a series you have to experience.

Edición numero 15 de La Gran Evasión. 9-12-2014.
