These people have to contend with sporadic weapon fire from Azeri soldiers, without reason, without warning. They have little to no defences, no shelter and no support. All the funds raised will go to building shelters to buy these people time, to protect themselves until Armenian forces arrive to defend them.Your contribution will save lives and offer a sense of hope to those above whom the clouds are gathering.Twoandamic no longer clocking out!#RiseUpHere is a link to the fundraiser: https://ap.am/en/fundraisers/a2848efe-dbef-4084-82ba-9556a7ff247b?tab=story

AC: Over the next day, GPS and radio signals may be degraded if a substantial geomagnetic storm materializes.Russia: President Vladimir Putin allegedly expressed condolences for Russia's involvement in the downing of Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243 in a private call with Azerbaijan's President.-HomeFront-USA: Facebook/META and Instagram have announced plans to introduce AI-generated “users” to their platforms, drawing the ire of the users still using these social media platforms. AC: While seemingly a minor development in the world of social media, it's already hard enough to discern the truth on the internet, much less when the developers of platforms themselves push AI-generated content on their platforms.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: As the transcript of the phone call between Russia and Azerbaijan has not yet been released, only secondary sources of unknown veracity have commented on the contents of the call. Allegedly Putin apologized for the incident, but did not directly take responsibility for the shootdown. In any case, the leadership of both nations are treating this incident as a tragic accident for the moment, although tensions among Azeris are high following the incident. For instance, Azeri President Aliyev accused Putin of attempting to downplay the incident. Regarding the exact cause of the crisis, Russia has not directly and clearly admitted to shooting down the aircraft, however Putin has mentioned that Russian Air Defense Artillery (ADA) units were engaging Ukrainian drones at the time of the incident. This highly coincidental statement might be the best Azerbaijan can get at the moment in terms of an admission of guilt from Russia. Putin's indirect apology is also very likely due to what are likely to be perceived as Azerbaijan's unreasonable demands. President Aliyev has demanded three things: An apology from Russia (which they already have), An admission of guilt by Russia, and criminal trial of the Russian soldiers responsible. This latter point is absolutely not going to happen, and probably isn't expected to either because Azerbaijan's further demand is that of money…compensation for the accident in the form of a check made out to the Azeri government. Putin is not the man to engage in a shakedown operation with, so relations between Azerbaijan and Russia might be rather lukewarm for some time.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

COP29 ends in a $300bn disappointment for developing nations

Good morning, Welcome to Top of the Morning by Mint, your weekday newscast that brings you five major stories from the world of business. It's Friday, November 29, 2024. This is Nelson John, let's get started. At COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the focus was all about climate finance, but the outcome left many wanting more. Initially aiming for $1.3 trillion annually, negotiators ended up agreeing on $300 billion a year by 2035, which didn't sit well with developing countries. They found the amount too low and the decision unambitious, expressing disappointment over the developed countries' reluctance to commit more. The conference also felt the impact of geopolitical tensions, particularly with Donald Trump's re-election, raising concerns about the U.S.'s commitment to climate finance. This scepticism influenced the negotiations, contributing to the lower-than-expected financial commitment. P Anima takes a deep dive into the happenings of the recently-concluded COP29 in the Azeri capital. Stellaris Venture Partners just launched its biggest fund yet at $300 million, sticking to that number despite heavy interest. Similarly, other investment firms like Blume Ventures and Peak XV are either holding steady or shrinking their funds, pointing to a shift towards more cautious investment strategies. Venture capital firms are getting more selective, influenced by past fund performances and the current economic climate, which demands realistic startup valuations. Priyamvada C reports on how VC firms are finding smaller fund sizes a better fit for the Indian market.  India just kicked off a massive ₹2,481 crore National Mission on Natural Farming to help 10 million farmers go chemical-free. The plan? Roll out 10,000 bio input resource centers and train farmers using model farms. The government is also deploying 30,000 krishi sakhis who will guide the farmers. What's the difference between natural and organic farming, you ask? Both avoid chemicals, but organic farming needs strict certification and a few years to switch from conventional methods. Natural farming lets farmers switch at their own pace, which is great for flexibility but might make it harder to sell produce at premium prices like organic goods fetch. In today's Primer, Sayantan Bera explains how natural farming can affect the kind of food you consume and whether the method will make it safer to eat.  This year, one company wants to hire an IITian at a salary of ₹1.9 crore. The catch? The AI company from San Francisco wants aspirants to create a Google-proof questionnaire that ChatGPT can't solve. Devina Sengupta and Pratishtha Bagai write that other AI companies like Turing, Graviton, and Da Vinci are also looking to hire students by providing remote working options and hefty salaries of more than ₹2 crore. Students well versed in machine learning seem to be the top choice as of now. Traditional employers like Goldman Sachs and Microsoft too are emphasising on AI-forward roles.  There are a couple of new 10-minute delivery players in the market. Yes, their names start with an S and Z, but they're Swish and Zing. These startups are aiming to capitalise on the growing demand for quick commerce in India. Sowmya Ramasubramanian writes that these companies focus specifically on 10-minute food deliveries, catering to impulsive consumers seeking convenience. Gross merchandise value for quick commerce deliveries is projected to reach $9.9 billion in five years in this sector. Turns out, hunger can't really wait after all.  COP kicks the climate can down the road, againIndia's venture capital firms are finding that leaner might be betterMint Primer | Natural farming: Will it make your food safe?Battle of AI versus the rest as offers promise ₹2 crore and above at IITsNew 10-minute food delivery startups are ready to test your impulse control

Yesterday, President Donald Trump powerfully differentiated himself from Vice President Kamala Harris on an issue of profound importance to millions of voters. He noted in a Truth Social post that she did “NOTHING as 120,000 Armenian Christians were horrifically persecuted and forcibly displaced” from an enclave in Azerbaijan known as Artsakh. He went on to warn that “Christians around the world will not be safe if…Harris is President” and that he will protect persecuted Christians, of whom there are estimated to be over 365 million worldwide. Incredibly, the UN decided to reward Azerbaijan for its past persecution of Christians and to ignore its promise to attack Armenia next by holding a climate change conference in Baku next month. Kamala Harris should start demonstrating solidarity with persecuted Christians by announcing the U.S. government will not “greenwash” Azeri genocide and will boycott Baku. This is Frank Gaffney.

In about a month's time, tens of thousands of environmentalists and their corporate sponsors plan to spend eleven days as guests of the government of Azerbaijan. There are two things really wrong with this picture: First, the Azeri regime is a major oil exporter with a horrible record of pollution – behavior the environmental movement supposedly abhors.   And second, a year ago, Azerbaijan – with help from Turkish special forces – finished blockading and starving 120,000 Christian residents of Nagorno-Karabakh by forcing them to flee to Armenia. And those jihadists threaten to attack the Armenians next to finish the genocide that killed 1.5 million of them in World War I. If the UN, its environmentalist partners and their corporate backers don't want to be recognized as frauds and complicit in genocide, they better move the so-called “COP29” meeting, or at a minimum boycott it. This is Frank Gaffney.

Armenia looks to reopen border with Turkey as potential gateway to the West

International report

Joint military exercises between US and Armenian forces are the latest steps in Yerevan's efforts to shift away from Moscow. The potential reopening of the Armenian border with Turkey could also prove crucial – though it may ultimately depend on Armenia's rival, Azerbaijan. July saw major military drills in Armenia between Armenian and United States forces."Politically, it is exceptionally relevant; they are four or five times larger than last year," explains Eric Hacopian, a political analyst in Armenia, who notes the range of US divisions mobilised for the drills. "It's not about peacekeeping."The military exercise, dubbed "Eagle Partner", is part of Yerevan's wider efforts to escape its Russian neighbour's sphere of influence, Hacopian believes."These are serious exercises, and they were followed up with the news that there is going to be US permanent representation in the Ministry of Defence of Armenia as advisors to join the French who are already there," he noted."Essentially, there is no other play but to join the West."France, Russia stand on opposite sides of Armenia-Azerbaijan conflictArmenia is also seeking to reduce its economic dependence on Russia, pressing Turkey to open its border and providing a new gateway to Western markets for the landlocked country.Ankara closed the frontier in 1993 after ethnic Armenian forces seized the contested Azerbaijani enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. However, with Azerbaijani forces recapturing the enclave last year, analysts say the opening of the border could now align with Turkey's goals to expand its regional influence."The normalisation of the relationship with Armenia would allow Turkish policy in the Cacasus to acquire a more comprehensive dimension today. That's the missing element," said Sinan Ulgen, an analyst with the Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies, a think tank in Istanbul."Turkey obviously has very strong links to Azerbaijan and very good relations with Georgia, but not with Armenia," he explained. "And that's a predicament, as we look at Turkey's overall policy in the Caucasus."LeverageWashington is working hard to broker a permanent peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan. "A deal is close," declared US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the sidelines of July's NATO summit in Washington.Last week, Turkish and Armenian envoys held their fifth meeting aimed at normalising relations. However, with critical issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan unresolved, Baku sees Turkey's reopening of the Armenian border as important leverage. In principle, both Azerbaijan and Turkey are in favour, claims Farid Shafiyev, an Azeri former diplomat and now chair of the Centre of Analysis of International Relations in Baku."However, we believe at this stage, as we have not signed a peace agreement, it might send a wrong signal to Yerevan and Armenia that we don't need to come to an agreement about the core issues – the mutual recognition of territorial integrity," he said. Can Turkey tip the balance of power in the Caucasus conflict?Meanwhile Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has developed close ties with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Ilham Aliyev, and is ruling out opening the border until Baku's demands are met.Turkish arms were key to Azerbaijan's recent military successes against Armenian-backed forces. "Azerbaijan is where it is, in good part because of Turkey's military assistance, intelligence assistance and all that," argues Soli Ozel, who teaches international relations at Istanbul's Kadir Has University. But Ozel says Baku is dictating Ankara's Caucasus policy. "It is befuddling to me that Turkey cannot open the borders with Armenia, which Armenia both needs and wants, because of Azerbaijan's veto," he said. "Especially if indeed Azerbaijan, for one reason or another, believes that its interests are once more in turning toward Russia."With Azerbaijan's Socar energy company Turkey's biggest foreign investor, Baku retains powerful economic leverage over Ankara – meaning any hope of reopening the Turkish-Armenian border appears dependent on the wishes of Azerbaijan's leadership.

TENSIONS MOUNT IN NAGORNO KARABAGH.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-Europe: NATO's standard arctic training exercise has begun, taking place this year for the first time in Finland. Normally held in Norway every other year, OPN COLD RESPONSE has been renamed to be OPN NORDIC RESPONSE as of Finland joining NATO last year. This exercise will continue until March 14th.Nagorno-Karabagh – Tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan have escalated over the past few weeks following limited skirmishes in the region. In the Azeri controlled areas, significant construction efforts are underway, with the previous provincial capital building being demolished over the weekend. Limited skirmishes carried out by small patrols have been reported in the northern Azeri-occupied areas over the past few days, causing local concerns that the conflict may flare up again. AC: So far, there are no indications of large military movements from either side, but diplomatic relations are deteriorating which in turn will likely cause more tensions in the near future.Red Sea/HOA: This morning another cargo ship was struck with at least one cruise missile in the Gulf of Aden. Houthi forces claim that the vessel belongs to the Israeli shipping company ZIM, but as the vessel was transiting without emitting transponder data, independent verification will take some time.-HomeFront-USA: Congress is considering the closure of the Northeast Gasoline Supply Reserve (NGSR). Nestled within the latest thousand-page spending bill, this closure is planned to take place after the U.S. draws down the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) by one million barrels this year. The NGSR was established in 2014 in response to the effects of Hurricane Sandy which caused widespread fuel disruptions throughout the northeastern United States. In the years since, this reserve has held approximately one million barrels of refined gasoline.PA: A train derailment incident occurred along the Lehigh River in Lehigh County on Saturday morning. Three trains were involved in the derailment after an eastbound train collided with another train stopped on the track. The resulting debris from the first collision resulted in the derailment of a third westbound train on the adjacent track. An unknown quantity of diesel fuel was spilled into the river, but no other HAZMAT was reported. The cause of the incident is under investigation.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Regarding the potential closure of the NGSR, the reduction of strategic POL reserves is not generally recommended for a nation which has increasingly vulnerable energy needs. However, when passed, this would align with the long-standing trend of Congressional bills increasing vulnerabilities of critical infrastructure. The daily impact this would have to average citizens is minimal, but the reduction of critical energy reserves is a consideration in the event that normal fuel delivery services are impacted in some way throughout the region.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//

Making Peace Visible

Making Peace Visible is a show about how the media covers peace and conflict. One of the major reasons we make it is because peace gets so little coverage in the news media. When we do hear news about peace, it's usually focused on signing an agreement. When that's done, the cameras, and the world's attention move on.  But that handshake moment is just a fragment in a peace process. It often takes years of building trust and openness between warring parties to get to an agreement. And then more years after, to transition from violent conflict towards a political process; and see if peace can stick, and whether the grievances that led to war in the first place are being addressed.  The slow speed and complexity of these processes may not lend themselves to mainstream news formats. But they are happening, and we're missing out on valuable lessons in reconciliation that can be adapted to other conflicts around the world.  That's why we invited Jonathan Cohen, executive director of the peacebuilding organization Conciliation Resources, or CR. In this episode, he shares stories from two ongoing peace processes: In Ethiopia, an ethnic Somali state called Ogaden. And on the island of Mindanao in the Philippines, a new autonomous region called Bangsamoro.  You'll also hear about CR's work in Nagorno-Karabakh, where journalists from both sides – Armenian and Azeri – collaborated to make documentaries about that conflict. And we'll discuss why this kind of storytelling still matters, even after most of the region's Armenians were displaced during an Azerbaijani offensive in September 2023.LEARN MOREParts of a Circle: Nagorny Karabakh conflict documentary series (Scroll to bottom to watch 2019 Summary Film)Ethiopia: persisting with peace – short film about Ogaden peace processSouthern Philippines: Making Peace Stick in the Bangsamoro – May 2023 Crisis Group reportMusic in this episode by Bill Vortex ABOUT THE SHOWMaking Peace Visible is a project of War Stories Peace Stories. Some 1,700 years ago, Armenia became the very first nation in history to adopt Christianity as the official religion of the state. That long history is fast disappearing. A photo recently posted by the Christian Emergency Alliance records the last clergy of an ancient monastery, forced to flee from the Azeri advances, which are often accompanied by desecrations of Christian sites by Muslim soldiers.  In ancient times, the Armenians endured a precarious existence, with Rome to the west and Persia to the east. Today, U.S. ally Turkey backs the Muslim Azeri while Moscow has been an unreliable protector of Armenia.  Whatever the causes of this strife, an ancient Christian society sits on the edge of destruction, which means that our prayers and political actions cannot be constrained only by geopolitics.   Pray to God for our brothers and sisters, and appeal to our political representatives for their relief.

Last week, as the world's attention remained fixated on the diplomatic row with Canada, a significant and alarming development unfolded in the Caucasus when Thousands of ethnic Armenians fled from Nagorno-Karabakh following the region's surrender to Azerbaijan on September 20th. This region is home to a majority of approximately 120,000 ethnic Armenians. What transpired was the resurgence of a long-standing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The Lachin Corridor, a vital road, serves as the sole connection between the Republic of Armenia and the population of Nagorno-Karabakh. This corridor plays a crucial role in supplying essential goods, and residents in Nagorno-Karabakh have reported severe shortages of basic necessities like food and medication in recent months.Meanwhile, Azerbaijan has accused Armenia of using this corridor to transport military supplies, a claim strongly denied by Armenia. Baku, Azerbaijan's capital, has also asserted that it offered food and aid through an alternate route, but Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh refused to accept it.Only recently, Azeri forces attacked Stepanakert, forcing the separatists to hand over full control to Baku. The conflict still claimed many lives, enabled mass displacement and triggered turmoil across the wider region. And another major humanitarian crisis is looming on the horizon.Given these unfolding events, Our host Anna Priyadarshini and foreign affairs editor at India Today, TV Today Network Geeta delve into the core of this conflict. On this edition of Parallax Views, Mark Movsesian, Director of the Center for Law and Religion at St. John's University, joins us to discuss his Compact Magazine article "The Second Armenian Genocide". The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict has come to a close with Azerbaijan taking control, thus leaving many Armenians to flee the region in what many are calling an ethnic cleansing. Mark argues that these events unfolded due to 21st century Great Power competition and that Armenians are the ones that are paying for it. In relation to this we discuss Russia, Turkey, Israel, and the U.S. in relation to Nagorno-Karabakh. We also delve into why U.S. foreign policy has had so little interest in the plight of Armenians despite claiming to being in favor of human rights and R2P (Responsibility to Protect Doctrine), how this incident and the U.S. response reveals American foreign policy hypocrisy, the belief that Armenia is a puppet of Russia, Russia's issues with Armenia and the end of their peacekeeping efforts in the region, the Armenian genocide of 1915, Azeri lobbying efforts guiding the narrative about Nagorno-Karabakh in the West, the response (or lack of response) to Nagorno-Karabakh by American Christians and secular Leftists, Armenia as the oldest Christian civilizations in the world and the role religion plays in the conflict, Turkey's Erdogan, and much, much more!

Kate Adie presents stories from Nagorno-Karabakh, Canada, South Africa, Peru and Germany. Tens of thousands of ethnic Armenians have fled the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh in the last week. Rayhan Demytrie spoke to some on the Armenian border about the devastating impact of the recent Azeri blockade. And now they face the loss of their homeland, with distrust between both communities running deep. Canada's assertion that India appears to have been involved in the murder of a Canadian Sikh has sparked outrage in New Delhi and beyond. The Indian government has strongly denied the allegation. In Vancouver, Neal Razzell visits the Sikh temple where the dead man, Hardeep Singh Nijjar was leader, and found out more about what happened on the fateful day. A fire in Johannesburg at the end of August threw into sharp relief the terrible conditions in some affordable housing, which is often taken over by gangs who illegally rent out the buildings. Samantha Granville spoke to residents of the site that burned down, along with others in similarly precarious accommodation. In Peru's capital Lima, around 2 million residents living in the poorer suburbs have no access to running water and have to pay high prices for it to be delivered to them. Peter Yeung met someone who has come up with an innovative solution: an improvised canal system which collects water from the clouds - known as 'fog-catchers'. And finally, in Germany, a campaign is being launched to change a law that sees thousands of people sent to prison every year for travelling on public transport without a ticket. Tim Mansel meets one man helping to get people released because they haven't paid their fine.

“It's not just food and assistance, you need to give these children a life, a life of full opportunities… So, I think we're so far from where we need to go, to make the difference.” When thousands fled the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov, fearing the loss of millions of lives, stayed on. Every day since, the former UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in the country has fought to ease the acute suffering of its people. “I believe we are the last, best hope that humanity has. And we have to stand for it. For [many] we represent this larger world of justice, the moral compass. We must keep that.” More than 9 in 10 Afghans now live in poverty, with 24.4 million reliant on humanitarian aid. Meanwhile, mounting restrictions on freedoms have excluded millions of women from work and study. In this episode, Dr. Ramiz Alakbarov reflects on three painful years of Taliban rule, on the desperate need for long-term prospects, and on finding hope amid the darkness. “Imagine someone sitting under plastic sheeting and munching on a high energy biscuit and waiting - now for 20 years. That provisional shelter and biscuit will save your life today. But without education, health services, jobs, or income … you will run, you will join a radical group, you will eventually end up selling children, and organs.”

Türkçemiz Türkçe, çok geniş bir alanda konuşulan bir dildir. Gittiğim birçok ülkede Türkçe sayesinde kurduğum ilişkilerin sıcaklığını hâlâ içimde duyarım. Örneğin, 1988 yılında New York'tan Minneapolis'e uçuyordum. Yanımdaki koltuğa müzik dinleyen bir genç oturdu. Bir ara bana dönerek “Hi! How are you?” (Merhaba. ‘Yumurta' yerine ‘cumurta' dersen olur biter.” dedi. Ben “Oralardan bir şey özlüyor musunuz?” diye sorunca yaşlı adamın gözleri doldu. “Özlemem mi heç, kadim dostluk özlemişem men.” demişti. Berlin'e gelince birbirimize baba oğul gibi sarılıp ayrılmıştık. Son zamanlarda üniversitemize Kazakistan'dan, Özbekistan'dan öğrenciler gelmeye başladı. Türkçe ile çok güzel ilişkiler kuruyoruz. Özbek öğrencimiz Hamburg'a staja gitmişti.
