In episode 83 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication we talk with Doug Levandowski and Yeonsoo Julian Kim about their co-design Home. Home is an RPG that focuses more on storytelling than dice rolling thanks to Tarot cards that help every player take turns as the “Director” of their scary story. With different modules in the RPG no game will be the same. The game started as Doug's attempt to make a game about his childhood home but with Julie's help the game grew into what it is today. Hey, we're featuring a few episodes of Tales from the Cryptid on Roleplay Retcon's feed, hosted by investigative journalist Gaston Leroux (who sounds a lot like Jensie, haha what a kooky coincidence). Leroux has proof of what happened at the Opera Garnier in Paris in 1992, and the real story is wilder than anything you think you know about it. Guest starring Remick! Check out her games and her actual play stream Tales From the Forgotten Troupe! | Playing Kids on Bikes by Jon Gilmour and Doug Levandowski! | Soundtrack by Keygen Church! | Sound effects by freesound.org | Come talk about it in our Discord! | Look at our Patreon! Frankly, there hasn't been a good film adaptation Gaston Leroux's early 20th century novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, a.k.a. The Phantom of the Opera. Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical is good, but it's also a far walk from the original book, which is an absolute banger and hilarious to boot (and the 2004 Joel Schumacher movie was panned by both critics and Phantom fans alike). So, Jensie has decided we're not remaking just one movie, but all of them! That's not the only wild choice we've made: We'll be telling our story using the TTRPG Kids on Bikes, except with no kids and no bikes, just to prove how flexible this game actually is. In this episode we'll go over Kids on Bikes and introduce our characters: Special Guest Remick from Tales From the Forgotten Troupe plays the up-and-coming Opera Diva Christine Daaé, Alex is the well-mannered and romantic Viscount Raoul de Chagny and Ben is... someone we don't know much about, yet. | Guest starring Remick! When the artist Cliff Chiang co-created the comic book series Paper Girls, about four suburban kids in the ‘80s who get caught up in forces that can break space and time, he thought they'd come up with something totally original. But soon after the comic book came out, Stranger Things debuted on Netflix. Both creative projects are part of a genre that's more popular than ever: Kids on Bikes. I talk with Cliff about why he wanted Paper Girls to stand out from other Kids on Bikes stories. Screenwriter Stephany Folsom discusses how she adapted Paper Girls into an Amazon Prime Video live-action show by pitching it as “anti-nostalgia.” I also talk with game designers Jon Gilmour and Doug Levandowski about how they distilled the elements of Kids on Bikes stories into a role-playing game, and whether the genre is ready to outgrow its 1980s setting. Hello you sweet and wonderful listeners! Cory, Melanie, Richard, and Nate got together via Al Gore's internet to play Jonathan Gilmour & Doug Levandowski's Kids on Bikes. If you're a fan of 80s popular media and yearn for a simpler, more monster-y time, I can't recommend Kinds on Bikes enough. The system is simple and narrative-focused but unlike many other story-centric TTRPGs, not without important choices and exciting rolls. If that sounds like something you'd be into, treat yourself (and Jonathan and Doug, for that matter) by grabbing a copy from Renegade Games today: https://renegadegamestudios.com/kids-on-bikes/ And make sure you come back next week for the wild conclusion to our game! We are so excited about this month's movie/game discussion we can't even put it into words. Joining us to dissect and analyze J.J. Abrams' Super 8 are the creators of the Kids on Bikes RPG: Jonathan Gilmour and Doug Levandowski! We tear into "the most 'kids on bikes' movie that ever was" and realize it isn't quite the movie we thought it was. Opinions will differ, friendships will form, and enemies will be made, as we talk about the movie and then come up with some truly interesting ideas on how to run a game inspired by this movie! What approach would you use to run a Super 8 inspired game? Would your game be centered around a mystery or would you also attempt an emotional journey at its core? Let us know what inspiration this film has given you, or just contact us if you want us to throw some questions toward the creators of one of our favorite games. Interact with the show on Instagram and Twitter or email us at theneversaydiepodcast@gmail.com. Find our guests on Twitter to keep up with all of their amazing projects: Jonathan Gilmour Doug Levandowski Find Drew on Twitter and on Doctor Who: Who & Company Find Rafe on Twitter and on Have Not Seen This This month's independent podcast promo is for Red Dirt: A D&D Podcast.

This series is going to sweep you off your feet as we create characters for Kids on Brooms, but before we get to that, first some announcements.Did you check out the Spotlight episode last week? Well, keep an eye out for the Deimos Academy kickstarter that should be starting later this week! If you haven't heard the episode yet, absolutely check that one out, too, because the game is pretty fantastic and Ryan had a lot of fun creating characters and a spooky boarding school with our guests.Another thing you should check out is the TTRPG Bundle for Trans Rights Texas on Itch! There are well over 400 games included in this bundle, including my very own game, Our Final Gathering: The Dreaded Reflections of the Immortal Soul. We covered that game on a patreon exclusive episode if you want to hear what it's about, but this bundle is only $5 minimum, and it is going to such a good cause, so please check it out and help some folks out.Speaking of patreon exclusives and helping people out, we also have a network patreon that helps our show and all of the other shows on the network. At patreon.com/oneshotpodcast, you can get bonus episodes for the various shows on the network or even other rewards like a free RPG every month. But, honestly, if you have a few dollars to spare right now and are debating on where it should go, check out the TTRPG bundle mentioned before first, and then consider backing the patreon if you have some more to spare. One last announcement before we go. We have a Tik Tok page now! We are currently only hosting all of our teasers for upcoming episodes. Will we use it for anything else? We don't really know! But you can follow us at charactercreationcast on TikTok and like our stuff! That's it for announcements today! Stick around after the show for the call to action, including a new review! In the meantime, enjoy the show!Series 48.1 - Call to ActionThis was probably our most serious character creation session ever, and I seriously enjoyed it. [More things said about game]. Before we let you go for the week, we have a couple calls to action.First up, if you want to help out this show and others on the network, consider the One Shot Network patreon at patreon.com/oneshotpodcast. Also, check out our brand new TikTok page at charactercreationcast on tiktok! Like and subscribe? Is that what they say? We're not sure, but we think it'll be worthwhile!Next, absolutely check out the Trans Rights Texas Bundle on Itch. Ryan has a game included in it along with hundreds of other designers and even more games. It's such a good deal and really helps the kids that will be suffering down in Texas after some really damaging anti-trans legislation was passed recently. So, please check that out and consider giving more than the minimum amount in order to help some folks out as well as get a boatload of games to try out.And if you have some time after all of that, consider leaving a rating and review for our podcast. The pandemic has been pretty hard for listener numbers for a lot of podcasts, this one included, and any help you can provide in spreading the word would be remarkable. We understand good reviews is one of the best ways to spread that word and get new listeners to our feed, so if you can head over to Apple Podcasts, Podchaser, Podcast Addict or wherever you can leave reviews for podcasts, if we can find it, we'll read out every 5 star review here. Not only will it help us out but it'll make us feel amazing as well, then we get to thank you personally like we're about to do for this review we got from:Hawklord2112★★★★★So. I've been on a CCC kick for a while. Ryan and Amelia have such an engaging chemistry and work so well with the game creators / enthusiasts they have on the show. They look at the mechanisms built into the various games without deep diving all the crunch, giving a wonderful insight into whatever system they are discussing. They genuinely enjoy the work they do, and their approach of "we can make what is fun to make and what sounds like fun to play because there are no consequences of bad decisions" has had me snorting with laughter on the bus on many occasions. If you're after a snapshot of Game X that you've seen on twitter / bought on itch and havent gotten round to reading yet, and want to be entertained and get some insight from the games creators / fans - take a listen. find whichever series has a system you know, or are interested in, and stick it in your ears. you wont regret it.That's it for today's episode. Come back next week as we dive fully into character creation and create some truly amazing characters. Until then, take care of yourselves, everyone, drink some water, get some rest, get vaccinated, stay safe out there and keep making those amazing people. We'll see you next time.Series 48.1- Kids on Brooms with Jonathan Gilmour and Doug Levandowski [Designers] (Creation)Welcome to the first episode of series 48, everyone!
