Hey, we're featuring a few episodes of Tales from the Cryptid on Roleplay Retcon's feed, hosted by investigative journalist Gaston Leroux (who sounds a lot like Jensie, haha what a kooky coincidence). Leroux has proof of what happened at the Opera Garnier in Paris in 1992, and the real story is wilder than anything you think you know about it. Guest starring Remick! Check out her games and her actual play stream Tales From the Forgotten Troupe! | Playing Kids on Bikes by Jon Gilmour and Doug Levandowski! | Soundtrack by Keygen Church! | Sound effects by freesound.org | Come talk about it in our Discord! | Look at our Patreon! Frankly, there hasn't been a good film adaptation Gaston Leroux's early 20th century novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, a.k.a. The Phantom of the Opera. Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical is good, but it's also a far walk from the original book, which is an absolute banger and hilarious to boot (and the 2004 Joel Schumacher movie was panned by both critics and Phantom fans alike). So, Jensie has decided we're not remaking just one movie, but all of them! That's not the only wild choice we've made: We'll be telling our story using the TTRPG Kids on Bikes, except with no kids and no bikes, just to prove how flexible this game actually is. In this episode we'll go over Kids on Bikes and introduce our characters: Special Guest Remick from Tales From the Forgotten Troupe plays the up-and-coming Opera Diva Christine Daaé, Alex is the well-mannered and romantic Viscount Raoul de Chagny and Ben is... someone we don't know much about, yet. | Guest starring Remick! When the artist Cliff Chiang co-created the comic book series Paper Girls, about four suburban kids in the ‘80s who get caught up in forces that can break space and time, he thought they'd come up with something totally original. But soon after the comic book came out, Stranger Things debuted on Netflix. Both creative projects are part of a genre that's more popular than ever: Kids on Bikes. I talk with Cliff about why he wanted Paper Girls to stand out from other Kids on Bikes stories. Screenwriter Stephany Folsom discusses how she adapted Paper Girls into an Amazon Prime Video live-action show by pitching it as “anti-nostalgia.” I also talk with game designers Jon Gilmour and Doug Levandowski about how they distilled the elements of Kids on Bikes stories into a role-playing game, and whether the genre is ready to outgrow its 1980s setting. Emma and Gil moderate a roundtable on safety tools in games, with guests Kienna Shaw and Lauren Bryant-Monk (creators of the TTRPG Safety Toolkit) and John Stavropoulos (creator of the X-Card). We discuss consent and safety in games, starting with tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs), but expanding to all sorts of games. How can safety tools help in games, and in what ways do they help? Content Warning: this episode mentions occurences of consent violations, domestic abuse, and sexual assault. SHOW NOTES 23m25s - The D&D Adventurers League is an official ongoing play, organized by D&D's publisher Wizards of the Coast. 32m29s - Kids on Bikes, by Jon Gilmour and Doug Levandowski. 33m17s - Avonelle Wing is a longtime RPG/LARP player, convention organizer, and advocate for equality and justice for games. She's one of Gil's idols. 34m11s - Kate Bullock is a TTRPG designer, advocate, writer, and president of the Indie Game Developer Network. 39m58s - Nordic LARP is a form of LARP with minimal rules and GMing, but heavy atmosphere and story. Compare it to demonstrative (boffer) LARPs, which tend to be more fantastical and have NPCs and combat rules. 43m20s - An otome game is a story-based video game that generally has the player control a female character, to try to develop a relationship with one of the game's male characters. 46m10s - Here's an especially horrifying story about an awful GM that came out of UKGE last year (BIG CONTENT WARNING for sexual assault in that link). Note that this is one story, but there are many more that never get this much coverage. The story about the public live stream that went wrong is here, and carries a similar content warning. 52m07s - You didn't think we were going to go a full episode without bringing board games into it, did you? :) 1h00m26s - Self-Promotion: you can find more info about Gil's Check-In Cards here. 1h00m57s - Twilight Imperium being a 6 hour game about galactic conquest. 1h06m58s - Psychologist Susan Silk and her friend Barry Goldman wrote about this in the LA times. They called it "Ring Theory," and in it, they discuss how you can comfort a grieving person while not burdening them with your own pain, by placing them in the "center" of the crisis and being mindful of where you are relative to others in that ring. 1h10m03s - Restorative justice is a methodology that has the victim and offender meeting (often with community members), with the expectation that the two parties will come to a consensus on what happened, how much damage was caused, and how the damage can be repaired. This gives the offender a clear path to righting the wrong, and empowers the victim in the process of seeking justice.

First up is the co-designer of Dead of Winter, among a bevy of other games, Jon Gilmour, and second, the host of the One Shot Podcast, James D'Amato! During their discussion, Craig, James, and Jon talk about the pains and joys of character creation, evoking emotions in games, and finding storytelling moments when surrounded by mechanics. It's a lovely discussion and we're excited James and Jon could spare some time to guest on the show. In the family segment, we finally had #eringamenight! I can not out into words how excited Erin was to have a game night of her choosing. Tyler also chimes in with several fun plays including Clank and the joy of beating Craig in way too many games. Thanks for tuning in and we'll be back next month for more board games forever! In our latest Friends of the Show edition, we reach across the pond and have a chat with Jon Gilmour which unearths one of the funniest and interesting stories we've heard about getting into the hobby. We were really pleased he took the time out to talk to us and it's certainly worth a listen. Jon, along with Isaac Vega were responsible for the creation of Dead of Winter, a personal favourite of Richard's. He has been involved in a number of other games which he was happy to talk about as well as telling us what he likes to get to the table. We talk about Kickstarter and the choices in the route to market and finish up with his latest game in progress, the extremely interesting looking Wasteland Express. We answered some questions and general had a bit of fun. Even though Richard does comes across as Captain Fanboy.
