This blogcast explores “The Musical Tradition of All Souls' Day” written by Emily Lomnitzer and read by Fatima Monterrubio Cruess. In this blog post, Emily shares some of the history behind All Souls' Day's most famous musical compositions, for example, by Mozart, Verdi, or Andrew Lloyd Weber. Moving forward in history, we see some of the greatest composers creating masterworks called “requiems.” In these, the special prayers for Masses for the dead mentioned above as well as the prayers that are sung at ordinary Masses (like the “Kyrie”) are set to music. Usually they were written for choir as well as orchestra or organ, some requiring hundreds of musicians. Some of the most famous requiems are Mozart's, Verdi's, and Fauré's. You may hear selections of these at All Souls' Day Masses, or at special concerts dedicated to the feast, or during the season of Lent. Listening to recordings of them is also a wonderful supplement to your prayers during this time. One of the most famous pieces of music within the tradition of All Souls' Day is the “Pie Jesu.” Again originating from the prayers of the Mass for the Dead, the text reads, “Pious Lord Jesus, give them rest. Pious Lord Jesus, give them everlasting rest.” This prayer has become one of the most frequent inspirations for performances and composers, as the prayer itself is so simple and beautiful. There are so many beautiful versions, including one—among the most popular—composed by Andrew Lloyd Weber, the composer of The Phantom of the Opera. Whatever your taste in sacred music, there is much to be gleaned from the vast stores of music history with regard to All Souls' Day. For a thousand years, composers have taken to the page to help us better pray for our deceased loved ones. This year, why not find a requiem that you haven't heard before, or listen to Andrew Lloyd Weber's “Pie Jesu”? Ask God to help you to pray for the souls of your loved ones through this music as millions of people have done before you and will continue to do as long as music lives. Author:Emily Lomnitzer is a young professional. October is not even one week along and we've already had enough "October surprises" to span about five years. First, the epiphany of J.D. Vance, Superstar. If he had been any better we'd need to enlist Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice to score and produce the Broadway musical of Vance the Vanquisher. Come to think of it, that would make a great professional wrestling name. Except Tim Walz wrestled himself to the ground; maybe we should call him the Klucking Knucklehead? From there we offer some observations about the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, and wonder whether the usual incompetence or malevolence explans the appalling spectacle of the government's recovery efforts there. We won't find out from the mainstream media. Then, some things to watch for at the first anniversary of October 7 on Monday, and some portents of Iran's missile attack on Israel this week. Where are we on the World War III countdown clock?Lastly, Jack Smith emerged from his Groundhog Day lair once again to proclaim six more weeks of attempted criminalizing of Trump. Flash forward, Glazer has now established himself as a comedic force to be reckoned with, whose Emmy-nominated work has featured the likes of John Stewart, Billy Crystal, and Paul Rudd. This week on Hollywood at Home, Glazer reflects on his journey, his career, and the evolution of comedy - all with his trademark, razor-sharp wit. From interrupting Chris Rock in a meeting, to taking notes from Sarah Silverman, to competing with Andrew Lloyd Weber at the Emmys – Glazer never fails to find lessons, levity, and laughter.

Musicals have been around for more than 100 years. Gilbert and Sullivan gave us some of the first great ones in the format we know today, but they have expanded and evolved throughout the years.   Certainly too many to include in one episode of Enjoy Stuff, but Jay and Shua remember some of the biggest and most influential. Artists like Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe, and Andrew Lloyd Weber have written sprawling epics that have played on Broadway for decades and spawned movies, (and a lot of High School adaptations). Have fun with us as we revisit stories of watching and even participating in some musicals this week.   Are you interested in musicals? Ever played a part in one? One of the most unlikely Universal Monsters is also one of the oldest, dating back to a 1925 silent film starring Lon Cheney, Sr. But can any modern retelling of the Gaston Leroux novel escape the gravity of Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical adaptation? Driven to inspire other people with art, Brandon Victor Dixon has been sharing his talent with the world for decades now. And this month, the actor slash theatrical producer is part of the much-anticipated world premiere of the award-winning "MacGyver: The Musical's" album which will be released on January 27th. Apart from theatre, Brandon is also doing advocacy work. He talks about the We Are Foundation which he created, and how he uses it to bridge gaps between art and us as communities. He brings up a good point on human behavior, what makes it for some people to be kind, and how art can be a gateway to understanding and helping them. In choosing a role or a piece, he considers the tools that can make his role and the exchange between him and the audience the most effective. He adds that the pieces choose him and come into his life at a time when he needs them the most. When he was just starting, Brandon had to pause his graduation to go on a national tour, come back, finish school, and then originate a role on Broadway for which he got a Tony nomination. He recalls his audition process for the role of Simba, why he thinks he shouldn't have been cast, and how he overcame his doubts and the challenges he encountered as it was happening. As one of the stars in the world premiere album of “MacGyver: The Musical”, Brandon talks about his character, doing comedy, and how his process usually adapts to the show his doing. Brandon reflects on his role as Haywood Patterson in “The Scottsboro Boys”, why he considers it his favorite role, and how it ultimately goes back to his advocacy: to change and help people with the power of art. Brandon Victor Dixon is an actor, singer, advocate, and theatrical producer known for his Tony Award-nominated Broadway performances as Harpo in the 2005 musical "The Color Purple" and Eubie Blake in "Shuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed". Apart from originating both roles, he also originated the leading role of Berry Gordy Jr. in Broadway's "Motown: The Musical", which earned a nomination for a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. In 2016, Brandon assumed the role of Aaron Burr in the Broadway company of "Hamilton". He also played the role of Hayward Patterson in "The Scottsboro Boys" both Off-Broadway and in London's West End, and was nominated for a 2014 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical. As a producer, his credits include Broadway revivals of "Hedwig and the Angry Inch which won the 2014 Tony Award and the Drama Desk Award for best revival of a musical, and "Of Mice and Men". In 2018, he played Judas in NBC's live concert version of Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice's rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar" where he received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. His other stage credits include "Chicago", "The Lion King", "The Color Purple", "Rent", and "Shuffle Along" among others. His tv credits include "Power", "She's Gotta Have It", "Modern Love", and "The Best Man: The Final Chapters". Brandon is part of the much-anticipated album of the award-winning "MacGyver: The Musical'" which will be released on January 27th, 2023. We're baaaackkkk! Today we kick off our fourth season, a deep dive into the musicals of the one & only Andrew Lloyd Weber, one of the most esteemed and prolific musical theatre composers of all time. In this episode, Nathan & Peter take a look at an early success he and lyricist Tim Rice had in 1968: Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat!   We talk about: - The intersection of "liturgical" music (Lloyd Webber's father was a church organist) with pop music - Dreams, and how they function both in the religious tradition andcontemporary pop psychology and musicals. Is it really true that, as Joseph sings, "any dream will do?" - What Bible stories we think are appropriate for children – and which parts of the Bible we sanitize or gloss overto preserve a romanticized ideal of childhood innocence   You'll hear Donny Osmond, Janet Metz and the cast of the 1992 Canadian Cast Recording (Really Useful Group Ltd under exclusive license to Universal Music Operations Limited).   Continue the conversation with Peter (@pgeinvan) and Nathan (@nathan_lerud) on Twitter, and follow the Gospel of Musical Theatre on Instagram or Twitter @gospelofmt.

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with P.P. Arnold, Renowned R&B, Soul Singer, Author, “Soul Survivor” About Harvey's guest: Today's special guest, P.P. Arnold, is a phenomenal soul singer whose lifetime of show-stopping performances, in the recording studio and on the stage, have made her a legend.   She began singing in church as a child, and at the age of four, she became lead soloist.   At the age of 17, with virtually NO show business experience, armed with only a spectacular voice and remarkable stage presence, she was hired by Ike and Tina Turner to sing and dance with them as an “Ikette”  in the “Ike and Tina Turner Review”.  While on tour in the UK with the Rolling Stones in 1966, she developed a close relationship with Mick Jagger, who persuaded her to stay in England, and record as a solo artist.   She was the first female artist to sign with Immediate Records.  With hit songs including “Everything's Gonna Be Alright”, “The First Cut is the Deepest”, “The Time Has Come”, “If You Think You're Groovy”, and everybody's favourite, “Angel of the Morning”, she became known as “The First Lady of Immediate Records”, and England's undisputed Queen of Soul.   She's had a rich, amazing five-decade career working with everyone from Mick Jagger to Rod Stewart, Roy Orbison, Eric Clapton, Barry Gibb, Peter Gabriel, Roger Waters, Paul Weller, John Cougar Mellencamp and so many more.   She sang on the original “Jesus Christ Superstar” album.  She starred in the original London production of Andrew Lloyd Weber's groundbreaking show, “Starlight Express”.   And yes, that is her voice singing with Andy Gibb on the beautiful duet, “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”.   And if you're a Peter Gabriel fan, you can thank OUR GUEST for making his songs “Sledgehammer” and “Big Time”, so memorable.  And the same can be said of her duet with Roger Waters on the legendary song, “Perfect Sense”.    Earlier this year she released her highly anticipated memoir entitled, “Soul Survivor”, which is an intensely personal, brutally honest, compelling - and at times shocking - account of her turbulent, but always passionate life.   And she's just released her very first Christmas single, “It Won't Be Christmas Without You”, which has that soulful 60's vibe and is already becoming an instant classic. For more interviews and podcasts go to: https://www.harveybrownstoneinterviews.com/ https://pparnold.com/https://www.facebook.com/pparnoldofficialhttps://instagram.com/pp_arnoldhttps://www.youtube.com/user/pparnoldangelhttps://open.spotify.com/artist/5TjpsMnYz8lxTr91olqbEhhttps://twitter.com/PPArnold1https://pparnold.lnk.to/TheNewAdventures #PParnold    #harveybrownstoneinterviews

Frankly, there hasn't been a good film adaptation Gaston Leroux's early 20th century novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, a.k.a. The Phantom of the Opera. Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical is good, but it's also a far walk from the original book, which is an absolute banger and hilarious to boot (and the 2004 Joel Schumacher movie was panned by both critics and Phantom fans alike). So, Jensie has decided we're not remaking just one movie, but all of them! That's not the only wild choice we've made: We'll be telling our story using the TTRPG Kids on Bikes, except with no kids and no bikes, just to prove how flexible this game actually is. This Sunday we are introduced to another key figure in the Genesis narrative. He is a teenager named Joseph. His life is by far the longest and most masterful account in the entire book. The story is famous enough to launch Andrew Lloyd Weber's big musical hit, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. But I can assure you that the real life story of Joseph is far more entertaining and has an underlying subtle theological depth that is unmatched. The grand theme of Joseph's life as I see it is this:  God is working his will through the everyday events of your life and very often in ways that are yet to be seen.  There are no miracles here. God does not upend the physical laws he created in order to get things done. Rather, there is a hidden but sure hand of God moving and arranging everything without one highly visible, supernatural event. It is perhaps the second greatest story about how God takes the evil intentions of men and women and uses them for good. (The life of Jesus would be at the top of this list.) Joseph is the favored child of his father and it shows. Naturally, this means he is despised by his siblings. He doesn't do anything to improve family relations. In fact, he makes it worse by his lack of self-awareness. So they beat him up, sell him as a slave and destroy the very thing that represents how much of a spoiled little brat he has become: his famous coat. One could ask, “Where is God in all this?”  We all carry wounds. Like Joseph, some of those wounds are self-inflicted and like Joseph some of those wounds are given to us by others. It doesn't take much for those wounds to reopen. Today's pop culture, with its encouragement toward victimhood, doesn't help. Joseph's story teaches us that life is unfair, hard, full of inequities and injustice, and yet God works in the manure of every human life to form compost from which something beautiful can grow. But you have to surrender and give everything to him. This includes the bitterness, the anger, the resentment, the lifestyle, the attitudes - the things that are not congruent with what God wants for you. When this happens, you are set free. And one day you can say as Joseph did, “What others meant for evil, God meant for good.”
