Discipline Is Overrated—Here's What Matters More (Discipline & Flexibility)

Be Known w/ Rocky Garza

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2025 10:53

For so long, we've been taught that discipline is everything—that if we just work harder, grind longer, and stay laser-focused, we will never fail. But here's the problem: too much discipline can lead to rigidity, missed opportunities, and burnout. What if I told you that flexibility is just as important as discipline—maybe even more important at times? For years, I believed that if I just stayed disciplined enough, I wouldn't fail. If I could just wake up earlier, work longer hours, and stick to the plan no matter what, success would be guaranteed. But over time, I've realized that many of my biggest breakthroughs didn't come from grinding harder. They came from being adaptable, from being willing to change course when necessary. The False Association Between Discipline and SuccessDiscipline often gets tied to grinding, sacrifice, and doing all the things you don't enjoy while ignoring the things that bring you joy. Many of us have been conditioned to believe that if we fail, it's because we weren't disciplined enough.“I have to get more disciplined. I have to do more.”But what I've found is that when people say they need more discipline, they often mean they need to do more of the things they don't actually want to do. The real problem isn't a lack of discipline—it's a lack of alignment with what we truly want. The Cost of Rigid DisciplineHow often have you seen someone set an ambitious goal—whether in business, fitness, or personal growth—only to burn out within a few weeks?Take fitness, for example. At the start of the year, we set resolutions:Wake up at 5:30 AM.Get in all my steps.Count every macro.Hit my protein and water intake. We stack all these habits together and go full speed ahead. Then, about three weeks in, we stop. Studies show that 84% of people quit their New Year's resolutions by January 21st. Why? Because we go from zero to 100, and the moment we slip, we feel like we've failed entirely."I missed a workout, so I might as well quit." "I broke my diet, so I might as well give up."This all-or-nothing mindset kills momentum. But life isn't about rigid streaks—it's about the continue, not the restart. The Balance Between Discipline and FlexibilitySo how do we hold the tension between discipline and flexibility? It starts with realizing that discipline should create structure, not suffocation.Let me give you an example. I set a goal this year to increase my strength:Bench press 225 lbsSquat 315 lbsDeadlift 405 lbsTo hit those numbers, I calculated that I need to lift weights 208 times in 2025—about 4 workouts per week. That means there are 157 days in the year where I won't lift weights. That's the key: structure with flexibility. There's space for life, for adapting, for living in the continue. The Danger of an All-or-Nothing MentalityMany of us operate with an all-or-nothing mentality:If I miss a business meeting, my company will collapse. If we skip date night once, our marriage is doomed. If I don't follow my diet perfectly, my health will suffer. But that's not how life works. The truth is, life is lived in the continue. When we create rigid systems, we set ourselves up for failure. When we allow for flexibility, we create sustainable success. The Power of Iterative ChangeThe most successful people aren't those who never deviate from a plan—they're the ones who know when to pivot.Business owners adjust their strategies based on market needs.Athletes modify their training based on progress and injury.Leaders adapt their communication styles based on their teams. If you're holding onto a plan, ask yourself:Am I holding onto this because it's truly the best option?Or am I afraid to let go?Success isn't about more, more, more discipline. It's about knowing when to double down and when to pivot.Building Adaptive Systems for GrowthDiscipline alone won't create success. Your ability to stay flexible, pivot when necessary, and adapt as you grow is what will set you apart.Instead of chasing perfection, build systems that allow for flexibility. Create habits that support your goals while leaving room for the unexpected.Final Thoughts & Call to ActionThis week, challenge yourself to:Reflect on your current plans—Are they serving you, or are you serving them?Ask yourself, “What's one way I could approach this differently?”Prioritize progress over perfection—The goal isn't to get it right 100% of the time. The goal is to keep going.Lead with discipline, but don't forget to make room for flexibility. The key to lasting success isn't rigidity—it's resilience.Resources MentionedTake the Influence Appraisal Quiz at: rockygarza.com/influence.Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rockygarza/ Key Timestamps00:00 Setting Ambitious Fitness Goals 05:41 Creating a Workout Regimen 06:36 Balancing Discipline and Flexibility 07:12 Overcoming the All-or-Nothing Mentality 08:33 Adapting and Iterating for Success 09:03 Reflecting on Your Plans and Decisions 09:55 Building Adaptive Systems 10:07 Final Thoughts and EncouragementTo join Rocky for his next free virtual event, go to https://rockygarza.com/beyondsuccessSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/trgs/donations

Matthew Adams here, walking you through Advent Day 22 of our spiritual sojourn. Today, we're turning our attention to a passage from Luke that's brimming with praise and promise. It's not just a verse; it's a battle cry for those of us who've chosen the path of a spiritual warrior.Scripture: Luke 1:68-69"'Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, because he has come to his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David.'" These words from Luke 1:68-69 are a powerful proclamation of God's action in history, a reminder of His ongoing work in our lives. My Reasons To Believe is a publication fueled by its readers' support. We're committed to serving you. Think about stepping up to Faith Partner. For a mere $5 a month, you can play a crucial role in keeping this ministry's lights on. Stay blessed. In this scripture, we find a declaration of God's faithfulness and a celebration of His redemptive power. The 'horn of salvation' is a symbol of strength and a reference to the messianic lineage through David. For spiritual warriors, this passage is a reminder of the strength we find in God's salvation and the reasons we have to praise Him, even amidst life's battles.Three Driving Points* Celebrating God's Redemption: The acknowledgment of God coming to redeem His people is at the heart of our faith. As spiritual warriors, we fight from a place of victory, knowing that the ultimate battle against sin and death has been won. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,' says the Lord Almighty." This promise from Malachi 3:1 sets the stage for an extraordinary divine intervention. This verse is a powerful prophecy about preparation and fulfillment. It talks about a messenger paving the way for the Lord's arrival. As spiritual warriors, we can draw parallels to our own lives – we are also called to prepare the way, not just for ourselves, but for others to encounter the divine. In today's context, this translates to us being God's messengers in a world that often seems disconnected from spiritual realities. Our role involves living out the truth, sharing God's love, and preparing others to encounter Him in their own lives.* The Power of Sudden Arrival: The phrase "then suddenly" suggests an unexpected, swift coming of the Lord. It's a reminder that God's interventions in our lives often come without warning. As spiritual warriors, we're called to live in a state of readiness, always prepared for God's sudden moves, be it in our lives or in the lives of those around us.* Desiring the Messenger of the Covenant: The reference to the “messenger of the covenant” points to a deep longing for a divine connection. In our journey, this longing translates to a constant pursuit of a deeper relationship with God. It's about nurturing our desire for spiritual growth and being open to the ways God chooses to reveal Himself to us.ConclusionMalachi 3:1 challenges us as spiritual warriors to be active participants in preparing the way for God's presence. It's a call to readiness, a life of anticipation, and a heart yearning for deeper divine encounters.Call to ActionThis week, consider how you can be a messenger in your own community. Identify one way you can prepare the way for others to encounter God. It could be through a conversation, an act of service, or simply by being a living example of God's love and truth.PrayerLord Almighty, empower us to be Your messengers, preparing the way for Your presence in our lives and in our world. Keep us alert and ready for Your sudden arrivals, and deepen our desire for You. Amen.As we continue our journey as spiritual warriors, let's embrace our role in this divine narrative. Hey there, it's Matthew Adams, stepping into Day 15 of our spiritual exploration. Today, we're diving into a promise-packed passage from Jeremiah, one that speaks of anticipation, fulfillment, and the faith journey in between. In the life of a spiritual warrior, these promises aren't just words; they're anchors in the tumultuous seas of life.Scripture: Jeremiah 33:14-16"'The days are coming,' declares the Lord, 'when I will fulfill the good promise I made to the people of Israel and Judah.'" This excerpt from Jeremiah 33:14-16 isn't just a snippet of ancient prophecy; it's a timeless assurance of God's faithfulness and His unwavering commitment to fulfill His promises. This scripture is a vivid reminder that God's timeline and our timeline often don't match up. Yet, in the divine schedule, every promise has its appointed time of fulfillment. For us as spiritual warriors, this is both a challenge and a comfort - a challenge to remain steadfast in faith, and a comfort in knowing that God is always true to His word.My Reasons To Believe is a publication fueled by its readers' support. We're committed to serving you. Think about stepping up to Faith Partner. For a mere $5 a month, you can play a crucial role in keeping this ministry thriving. Stay blessed.Three Driving Points* Trusting in God's Timing: The phrase "The days are coming" speaks of a future fulfillment. As spiritual warriors, our first task is to trust in God's timing. This trust means believing that every promise made by God will come to pass, even if it seems delayed by human standards. It's about having faith in the 'not yet' while living fully in the 'now.'* Holding onto Promises in Uncertainty: The period between the promise and its fulfillment is often filled with uncertainty and waiting. In these times, our spiritual mettle is truly tested. Holding onto God's promises means not losing hope, even when the situation looks bleak. It's about being warriors of faith, not just in times of victory, but more so in times of waiting.* Seeing the Bigger Picture: Jeremiah's prophecy was not just for an individual, but for a community – for Israel and Judah. Similarly, our spiritual journey is connected to a larger story, one that involves our communities, families, and beyond. Recognizing this helps us see the broader impact of God's promises and our role in His bigger plan.ConclusionJeremiah 33:14-16 encourages us to embrace the waiting, to trust in God's timing, and to see our part in the grand narrative of His promises. As spiritual warriors, let's hold onto these assurances with steadfast faith, knowing that God is always true to His word.Call to ActionThis week, reflect on a specific promise from God that you are waiting on. Spend time each day meditating on that promise, asking God to strengthen your faith and give you patience as you wait for its fulfillment.PrayerLord, in our waiting, help us to trust in Your promises. Amen.As we continue on this journey, let's hold fast to the promises of God, knowing that 'the days are coming' for their fulfillment. Matthew Adams here, bringing you into Day 14 of our spiritual quest. Today, we're reflecting on a piece from Isaiah, a verse that speaks of new beginnings and unexpected growth. In the life of a spiritual warrior, this concept is more than just a metaphor; it's a reality that we often live out in our faith journey.Scripture: Isaiah 11:1"A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit." This line from Isaiah 11:1 isn't just poetic imagery; it's a profound prophecy and a symbol of hope, pointing towards renewal and new life emerging from what seemed like the end. This scripture is a reminder that in the divine economy, nothing is ever wasted. The 'stump of Jesse' represents situations that appear barren or finished, yet from these, God brings forth new growth, new possibilities. This reminds us that God often works in unexpected ways. His plans may diverge from our expectations, but they always lead to greater fruition. Our role is to stay open to the surprises of God's workings, trusting that His ways, though mysterious, are always perfect.* Bearing Fruit in Our Lives: The branch bearing fruit is symbolic of the productive outcome of our faith and perseverance. Matthew Adams here, on Day 12 of our spiritual trek. Today, we're looking at a passage from Luke that speaks to the heart of what it means to be a spiritual warrior. It's about being a herald, a forerunner for something much greater than ourselves – a role that demands courage, conviction, and a whole lot of faith.Scripture: Luke 1:76-78"And you, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God." This excerpt from Luke 1:76-78 paints a vivid picture of a calling that goes beyond the ordinary. In these verses, we're reminded of the vital role each of us plays in the grand narrative of faith. Like John the Baptist, we are called to be prophets of the Most High in our own right, preparing the way for the Lord in this generation. This calling involves imparting knowledge, sharing truth, and exemplifying the mercy of God.My Reasons To Believe is a publication fueled by its readers' support. We're committed to serving you. Think about stepping up to Faith Partner. For a mere $5 a month, you can play a crucial role in keeping this ministry thriving. It's about living a life that points others to God, using our words, actions, and lives to reflect His truth and love. It's a high calling, but one that's rich with purpose.* Preparing the Way for the Lord: John's role was to prepare people for Jesus' arrival. Our task is similar – to prepare the hearts and minds of those around us for a deeper understanding of Jesus. This preparation often involves challenging conversations, acts of love, and demonstrating the power of forgiveness in our lives.* Sharing the Knowledge of Salvation: The heart of our message is the knowledge of salvation through Jesus Christ. In a world often lost in transient pursuits, offering this eternal perspective is both a privilege and a responsibility. It's about guiding people to a realization of God's grace and the transformative power of forgiveness.ConclusionLuke 1:76-78 challenges us to embrace our role as modern-day prophets. It's a call to active spiritual warfare, where our weapons are truth, love, and mercy. As we step into this role, let's do so with humility and the courage that comes from God.Call to ActionThis week, identify one opportunity to 'prepare the way' for the Lord in your circle of influence. It could be through a conversation, an act of kindness, or simply by living out your faith authentically in front of others.PrayerMost High God, empower us to be prophets in this generation. Help us to prepare the way for You in the hearts of those we meet. Give us the wisdom to share the knowledge of salvation with grace and truth. Amen.As we continue our journey as spiritual warriors, let's remember our calling to be trailblazers of truth. May your path be guided by His light, and your efforts be fruitful in preparing the way for the Lord. Keep on keeping on, friends, for the journey is as significant as the destination. Hey there, it's Matthew Adams, bringing you into Advent Day 11 of our spiritual exploration. Today, we're diving into a passage from Isaiah that's all about preparation, transformation, and revelation. It's a call to spiritual warriors to not just listen for God's voice but to actively prepare for His work in our lives and the world.Scripture: Isaiah 40:3-5"A voice of one calling: In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together." This powerful imagery from Isaiah 40:3-5 speaks volumes about the transformative power of God's presence. This scripture isn't just poetry; it's a blueprint for spiritual warriors. It talks about making a path for God in the most unlikely places – the wilderness and the desert. It's about leveling the playing fields of our lives, smoothing out the rough patches, and being part of a grand revelation of God's glory. My Reasons To Believe is a publication fueled by its readers' support. We're committed to serving you. Think about stepping up to Faith Partner. For a mere $5 a month, you can play a crucial role in keeping this ministry thriving. Stay blessed.Three Driving Points* Preparing the Way in Our Lives: The call to prepare the way for the Lord starts within us. It's about examining our hearts and lives, identifying the 'wilderness' areas that need God's touch. This preparation involves repentance, realignment of our priorities, and a commitment to making room for God's work in and through us.* Leveling Life's Mountains and Valleys: The imagery of leveling mountains and raising valleys speaks to addressing the highs and lows in our spiritual journey. It's about humility in success (lowering the mountains) and hope in despair (raising the valleys). As spiritual warriors, our task is to maintain balance, keeping our focus on God regardless of life's ups and downs.* Being Part of the Revelation of God's Glory: The ultimate goal of this preparation is the revelation of God's glory. This isn't just a personal experience; it's communal – "all people will see it together." We're called to not only experience God's glory but to be conduits of that glory to the world.ConclusionIsaiah 40:3-5 is more than an Advent scripture; it's a year-round call to action for spiritual warriors. Give us the wisdom to level our mountains and raise our valleys, making a straight path for Your work. May we be instruments in revealing Your glory. As spiritual warriors, this Advent season is an opportune time to reflect on how we respond to God's calling in our lives.Scripture: Matthew 2:10"When they saw the star, they were overjoyed." This succinct verse from Matthew 2:10 captures the Magi's reaction upon seeing the star that would lead them to Jesus. Their journey, marked by anticipation and obedience, culminates in a moment of pure joy. This passage is more than a historical account; it's a metaphor for our spiritual journey. The star represents God's guidance, and the Magi's response exemplifies the joy we can experience when we follow His lead. In the midst of Advent, as we await the celebration of Christ's birth, this verse invites us to consider our own journey towards spiritual fulfillment. My Reasons To Believe is a publication fueled by its readers' support. In our lives, seeking God's guidance requires a similar posture – one of openness, attentiveness, and readiness to step out in faith, even when the destination isn't fully clear.* The Journey of Obedience: Following the star was an act of obedience for the Magi. For us, obedience to God's calling might mean stepping out of our comfort zones, embracing uncertainty, and trusting in His plan. It's a journey that tests our faith but ultimately leads to greater spiritual depth and maturity.* Joy in Discovery: The Magi's joy upon seeing the star is indicative of the profound joy we experience when we align our paths with God's will. This joy isn't dependent on external circumstances but is rooted in the discovery of God's presence and purpose in our lives.ConclusionAs we navigate the season of Advent, let's reflect on the journey of the Magi and what it teaches us about following God's guidance. Matthew Adams here, joining you on Day 8 of our Advent journey. Today, we're delving into a passage from Philippians that speaks volumes about the character of Christ and what it means for us as spiritual warriors. It's a call to embrace humility and servanthood, just as Jesus did.Scripture: Philippians 2:5-7"In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness." This passage from Philippians 2:5-7 challenges us to reflect on the nature of Christ's humility and how we're called to emulate it.This scripture reminds us that at the core of our Advent reflection is the incredible act of humility by God Himself – choosing to become human, to serve rather than be served. For spiritual warriors, this is a profound lesson in the power of humility and servitude in our walk with God and our relationships with others. My Reasons To Believe is a publication fueled by its readers' support. Now, let's roll up our sleeves and get to work!Three Driving Points* Embracing Christ's Mindset: To "have the same mindset as Christ Jesus" requires a radical shift in how we view ourselves and our roles in the world. It calls us to put aside pride and self-importance, focusing instead on serving others with love and humility, just as Jesus did.* Understanding True Power: Christ, being in very nature God, showed that true power lies not in asserting authority, but in humbling oneself. This is counterintuitive in a world that often equates power with dominance. As spiritual warriors, embracing this truth means finding strength in vulnerability and leadership in servitude.* Living as Servants: The call to take "the very nature of a servant" is a challenging yet rewarding aspect of our faith. It's about seeing and responding to the needs around us, putting others first, and embodying Christ's love in practical, tangible ways.ConclusionAs we continue our Advent journey, let's reflect on how we can incorporate the humility of Christ into our daily lives. Matthew Adams here, on Day Six of our Advent journey. As spiritual warriors, we're not just navigating life's challenges; we're also tuning in to hear God's voice. Today's scripture from Luke takes us to the heart of the Christmas story, where fear gives way to joy, and a long-awaited promise is fulfilled.Scripture: Luke 2:10-11"But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.'" This passage from Luke 2:10-11 captures a pivotal moment – the announcement of the Messiah's birth. This scripture vividly illustrates the transition from fear to joy, a journey every spiritual warrior knows well. The angel's message to the shepherds is an invitation to all of us: to move from the fears that bind us to the joy of Christ's presence in our lives. My Reasons To Believe is a publication fueled by its readers' support. We're committed to serving you. Think about stepping up to Faith Partner. For a mere $5 a month, you can play a crucial role in keeping this ministry thriving. Stay blessed. Now, let's roll up our sleeves and get to work!Three Driving Points* Overcoming Fear with Good News: The angel's first words, "Do not be afraid," address a common human experience – fear. As spiritual warriors, we're continually battling fears of various kinds. The good news of Christ's birth is a powerful reminder that in Him, we find the strength to overcome our fears and embrace the peace He offers.* Universal Joy for All People: The angel declares that the birth of Jesus is "good news that will cause great joy for all the people." This inclusivity is at the heart of the Christmas message. As followers of Christ, we're called to share this joy with everyone, breaking down barriers and extending love and grace to all.* Recognizing the Messiah in Our Midst: The announcement of a Savior born in the town of David signifies the arrival of the long-awaited Messiah. In our daily lives, we too are called to recognize Christ's presence around us – in the mundane, in the extraordinary, and especially in the faces of those we meet.ConclusionThis Advent, as we reflect on the angel's message to the shepherds, let's embrace the transformation from fear to joy. The birth of the Messiah is not just a historical event; it's a living reality that continues to bring hope and joy to the world.Call to ActionThis week, I encourage you to identify one fear you're facing and consciously bring it to God in prayer, asking for the joy of Christ to fill that space. Also, find a way to share the joy of Christ with someone else, perhaps someone who's feeling overlooked or undervalued.PrayerLord, thank You for the joy that comes from knowing Your Son, Jesus Christ. Help us to hear Your voice this Advent, guiding us from fear to joy. Empower us to share this joy with others, just as the angels shared it with the shepherds. Amen.As we continue our Advent journey, let's remember the angel's message and carry it in our hearts. May the joy of Christ's birth resonate in your life, banishing fear and spreading hope. Matthew Adams here, venturing into Day Four of our Advent reflections. Today, we're delving into a piece of scripture from Numbers, which speaks volumes about anticipation and the nature of God's promises. As spiritual warriors during Advent, we're not just waiting for Christmas; we're learning to perceive God's voice and His plans in our own lives.Scripture: Numbers 24:17"I see him, but not now; I perceive him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob; a scepter will rise out of Israel. He will crush the foreheads of Moab, the skulls of all the Shethites." This prophecy in Numbers 24:17, though cryptic at first glance, points towards the coming Messiah and His eventual reign. This scripture is a reminder that God's promises often come with a sense of mystery and anticipation. As spiritual warriors, we are called to trust in these promises, even when their fulfillment seems distant or unclear. Advent, a time of waiting and preparation, is the perfect season to reflect on this aspect of our spiritual journey. My Reasons To Believe is a publication fueled by its readers' support. We're committed to serving you. Think about stepping up to Faith Partner. For a mere $5 a month, you can play a crucial role in keeping this ministry thriving. Stay blessed. Now, let's roll up our sleeves and get to work!Three Driving Points* Understanding God's Timing: The words "I see him, but not now; I perceive him, but not near," emphasize that God's timeline is different from ours. As spiritual warriors, we must cultivate patience and trust that God's promises will be fulfilled in His perfect timing, not necessarily according to our expectations or desires.* Looking for the 'Star': The prophecy speaks of a star arising from Jacob – a metaphor for the Messiah. In our lives, this can be likened to looking for signs of God's guidance and presence. This Advent, let's be vigilant and attentive, seeking out these 'stars' in our daily experiences, be they moments of clarity, peace, or unexpected blessings.* Preparing for Fulfillment: The prophecy also speaks of victory – a scepter rising from Israel. This points to the ultimate triumph of good over evil, light over darkness. As we await Christ's birth, let's also prepare our hearts and minds for the fulfillment of God's promises in our lives, fostering a spirit of hope and resilience.ConclusionAdvent is a season of deep spiritual significance, a time to meditate on God's promises and our role in His grand design. As we reflect on the prophecy from Numbers, let's embrace this period of waiting with faith and expectation.Call to ActionThis week, I encourage you to find a quiet moment each day to reflect on the promises God has made in your life. Write them down, pray over them, and ask God to help you see the 'star' He has placed in your path.PrayerLord, in this sacred season of Advent, grant us the patience to wait for Your timing, the wisdom to perceive Your guidance, and the strength to prepare for the fulfillment of Your promises. Help us to keep our eyes fixed on the star of Your presence and love. Matthew Adams here, taking you through Day Two of our Advent journey. In this season of waiting and reflection, we're exploring what it means to be spiritual warriors attuned to God's voice. Advent isn't just about the birth of Christ; it's about the light He brings into our lives, guiding us through the darkest valleys.Scripture:"The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world.” (John 1:9)These words from John 1:9 aren't just poetic; they're a beacon in our often tumultuous journey, reminding us that no matter the darkness around us, Christ's light is ever-present, guiding and revealing. As spiritual warriors, our task is to not only seek this light but also to become conduits of it. In a world that often feels overshadowed by uncertainty and strife, the Advent season calls us to focus on the true light – a light that isn't overcome by any darkness. My Reasons To Believe is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Three Driving Points* Seeking the Light in Darkness: Just as a lighthouse guides ships through treacherous waters, Christ's light guides us in our spiritual battles. This Advent, let's seek that light in our daily lives – in scripture, in prayer, and in the faces of those we encounter.* Reflecting the Light to Others: It's one thing to find the light; it's another to reflect it. As spiritual warriors, we're called to be mirrors of Christ's love and compassion. This means reaching out to those in need, offering words of hope, and being vessels of peace and understanding.* Guarding Against the Shadows: The journey isn't always easy. There will be moments when the light seems dim, when our faith wavers. It's in these times that we must stand firm, remember the promise of John 1:9, and trust that the true light is always with us, even when it's not immediately visible.ConclusionAs we continue through Advent, let's embrace our role as spiritual warriors of the light. In a world that can often be dark and cold, let's be the warmth and brightness of Christ's love and hope.Call to ActionThis week, I challenge you to find one way each day to reflect Christ's light to someone else. It could be a kind word, an act of service, or simply a moment of your time. This series is going to sweep you off your feet as we create characters for Kids on Brooms, but before we get to that, first some announcements.Did you check out the Spotlight episode last week? Well, keep an eye out for the Deimos Academy kickstarter that should be starting later this week! If you haven't heard the episode yet, absolutely check that one out, too, because the game is pretty fantastic and Ryan had a lot of fun creating characters and a spooky boarding school with our guests.Another thing you should check out is the TTRPG Bundle for Trans Rights Texas on Itch! There are well over 400 games included in this bundle, including my very own game, Our Final Gathering: The Dreaded Reflections of the Immortal Soul. We covered that game on a patreon exclusive episode if you want to hear what it's about, but this bundle is only $5 minimum, and it is going to such a good cause, so please check it out and help some folks out.Speaking of patreon exclusives and helping people out, we also have a network patreon that helps our show and all of the other shows on the network. At patreon.com/oneshotpodcast, you can get bonus episodes for the various shows on the network or even other rewards like a free RPG every month. But, honestly, if you have a few dollars to spare right now and are debating on where it should go, check out the TTRPG bundle mentioned before first, and then consider backing the patreon if you have some more to spare. One last announcement before we go. We have a Tik Tok page now! We are currently only hosting all of our teasers for upcoming episodes. Will we use it for anything else? We don't really know! But you can follow us at charactercreationcast on TikTok and like our stuff! That's it for announcements today! Stick around after the show for the call to action, including a new review! In the meantime, enjoy the show!Series 48.1 - Call to ActionThis was probably our most serious character creation session ever, and I seriously enjoyed it. [More things said about game]. Before we let you go for the week, we have a couple calls to action.First up, if you want to help out this show and others on the network, consider the One Shot Network patreon at patreon.com/oneshotpodcast. Also, check out our brand new TikTok page at charactercreationcast on tiktok! Like and subscribe? Is that what they say? We're not sure, but we think it'll be worthwhile!Next, absolutely check out the Trans Rights Texas Bundle on Itch. Ryan has a game included in it along with hundreds of other designers and even more games. It's such a good deal and really helps the kids that will be suffering down in Texas after some really damaging anti-trans legislation was passed recently. So, please check that out and consider giving more than the minimum amount in order to help some folks out as well as get a boatload of games to try out.And if you have some time after all of that, consider leaving a rating and review for our podcast. The pandemic has been pretty hard for listener numbers for a lot of podcasts, this one included, and any help you can provide in spreading the word would be remarkable. We understand good reviews is one of the best ways to spread that word and get new listeners to our feed, so if you can head over to Apple Podcasts, Podchaser, Podcast Addict or wherever you can leave reviews for podcasts, if we can find it, we'll read out every 5 star review here. Not only will it help us out but it'll make us feel amazing as well, then we get to thank you personally like we're about to do for this review we got from:Hawklord2112★★★★★So. I've been on a CCC kick for a while. Ryan and Amelia have such an engaging chemistry and work so well with the game creators / enthusiasts they have on the show. They look at the mechanisms built into the various games without deep diving all the crunch, giving a wonderful insight into whatever system they are discussing. They genuinely enjoy the work they do, and their approach of "we can make what is fun to make and what sounds like fun to play because there are no consequences of bad decisions" has had me snorting with laughter on the bus on many occasions. If you're after a snapshot of Game X that you've seen on twitter / bought on itch and havent gotten round to reading yet, and want to be entertained and get some insight from the games creators / fans - take a listen. find whichever series has a system you know, or are interested in, and stick it in your ears. you wont regret it.That's it for today's episode. Come back next week as we dive fully into character creation and create some truly amazing characters. Until then, take care of yourselves, everyone, drink some water, get some rest, get vaccinated, stay safe out there and keep making those amazing people. We'll see you next time.Series 48.1- Kids on Brooms with Jonathan Gilmour and Doug Levandowski [Designers] (Creation)Welcome to the first episode of series 48, everyone! Carefully Examining the Text

This is the first of eleven national laments in the book of Psalms. 44:1-8 Israel's Glorious PastThe word save is used in vs. 3, 6, 7. They did not win the land of Canaan nor their great victories in the past by their own power but by God's. The phrase "all day long" is going to be used in vs.  8, 15, 22.44:9-16 Israel's Miserable PresentNothing in vs. 1-8 prepared us for the dramatic shift in vs. 9-16.44:17-22 Their Protest of InnocenceNo other psalm make such claims of national fidelity like this one.vs. 17-18 The people state their loyalty to Godvs. 19 They talk of the pain they experienced44:23-26 Israel begs God to take actionThis is a call for God to awake from His "Sleep" and act. Jesus and Psalm 44He saved us by His power- vs. 1-8; Eph. 2:1-10; II Tim. 1:9He is our King- John 19:19-22Any horrible experience of suffering Israel described in vs. 9-16 has some comparison to His experiences on the cross. If any could ever protest their innocence like we see in vs. 17-22, it was Jesus. Verses 23-26 remind us of Jesus sleeping on the boat in Mark 4:35-41.Because Jesus was led as a "Sheep to the slaughter" Isaiah 53:7, through His death and resurrection we become conquerers- Romans 8:35-37.

The Agency Profit Podcast
Streamlining Client Communication with Keith Perhac – Episode 35

The Agency Profit Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 10, 2020 35:39

About Keith:Keith Perhac is the founder of SegMetrics.io, a Saas company helping course authors, product creators, and self-funded businesses increase their revenue from their existing traffic.Unlike most marketers, Keith is also a developer, which facilitated his transition from DevelopYourMarketing.com to “the dark side” (AKA SaaS). This gives him an innate understanding of two key things: the marketing strategies required to grow, and how to implement said strategies for your business.Currently, his online software helps marketers and agency owners get 100% clarity on where their leads come from, how they act, and how much their marketing is really worth. In his spare time, you can find Keith buried in Dungeons & Dragons.SegMetrics.io and How it StartedLike all good software solutions, it was born from an itch that needed scratching.Keith started out as an agency owner, and had been doing funnel optimization and campaign optimization for a number of digital marketers. As his client base grew, so did the time spent on pulling the required numbers for the reporting process.“Pulling numbers is not what I got into marketing for… Understanding what to do with those numbers is why I got into marketing.”Numbers are vitally important to any business, particularly marketing, yet Keith and his colleagues were finding it to be a “huge time suck.” Being developers by nature, they committed to finding a more functional way forward. So, they built the first version internally, based on the premise of “Hey, can we drop these numbers into adatabase and then calculate them automatically?” As it turns out, you can! The Importance of Client Communication and ReportingThink about it… a client comes to work with you because they need guidance in a certain area. The more communication you have with a client, the more you can alleviate any lurking fears regarding your expertise in your field.“The number one thing I've found working with agencies, and things that we did internally, was to create a process. The stronger the communication process, the more confidence a client has in your agency.”Conversely, it's worth bearing in mind that over-communication can have the opposite effect. It indicates a lack of structure and a certain malleability. When a client feels they should take control of a project, you're in danger of losing your cache – that being your expertise. There are other pitfalls leading from that. For example, you could find yourself dealing with items that aren't in the project scope; fixing up “little things” that need tweaking, and – as Keith attests – “suddenly, you're a development shop instead of a marketing agency.”So, a set process is key to working well with clients from the offset. You can start this by ensuring…Every step is documented for both partiesEach step is part of a set process, showcasing how things are progressing/improvingEvery step then has a subsequent actionThis way, the client never feels in the dark, constantly wondering ‘What's going on next?!' Value Communication During COVID-19Right now, it's more critical than ever to be communicating value to clients. It can actually be bad for your clients to cut you right now if you're driving results for them, particularly online.“If you can keep revenue the same, or keep it from tanking, that's your agency fee paid for right there. That's the value you need to show and that's what we try to do with our funnel optimizations.”You need to show them you're not a cost, but an investment and a value-add, and you do that through your concise communication and reporting process.“Look, here's what we did this last month, here's where you would have been without us, and here's where you are with us. We're only taking 5% of all the improvements we've made; so we're definitely worth keeping on.”Set processes creates clarity, continuously reinforcing the value the client is getting. This, in turn, creates client confidence that you're producing results. Streamlining Your Client Communication ProcessKeeping that pertinent word in mind (value), how should agencies think about setting up a process for communicating with clients that's going to be efficient, streamlined and not take up a ton of their time?Depending on how much the client is paying you, create a cadence of a weekly call and/or email that updates them on where the stats are. When Keith signed a new client via his first company, he would follow a set schedule – core for clients that turned out to be a good fit.“They got a packet, a list saying, ‘go do this now. Go do this, go do this. This is going to give us all the information for our kickoff call…' Then, give them a list of everything you're going to do in that first six weeks – because it's a process, right?!”A simple example of such a process should go a little something like this…Schedule weekly calls to review results, plus the next steps requiredHost meetings every six weeks to discuss strategy, and roadmap for the subsequent six weeksEnsure there's a meeting two weeks before the renewal of the contractNever underestimate the importance of inserting yourself into the strategic decision-making process Automating Streamlined ReportingWhen should you consider automating the processes that feel like they might be quite tricky to streamline? According to Keith, there is one golden rule:“Never try to use software to automate the first time around, it is such a bad idea.”Instead, implement the below process before attempting to automate:Start with a paper and/or checklist of the Standard Operating ProceduresGive that SOP to someone who preferably hasn't undertaken this process before; their different POV should be able to highlight any holes and redundancies (plus it means you're delegating and possibly putting your time towards something more valuable!)Once that SOP is solid and proven, then you can work on automating parts that are consistently the same Your Take-Away…By way of summary, find ways of building more value into your relationships with your clients during COVID-19. Now is as good a time as any, according to Keith…“You are going to see a decline in revenue, that's a given; don't panic, take that extra time to make your business stronger… Now is the time.”So, take the imminent lull in customer interaction to refine your processes and, in turn, improve your value to both your existing and future clients.Go plug those holes! That way, you'll be better prepared for whatever lies ahead… Want to see more of Keith?
