As part of the importer series, Yi Xin Ong, Managing Partner of KOT Selections in Singapore, provides an international perspective. From Singapore's 2-3,000 active importers for the small island to the impact of international media, Yi Xin describes how KOT navigates the importing, distributing, and retailing of its portfolio of winegrowers. Detailed Show Notes: Background Founded KOT in 2011 - they couldn't get the wines they were buying in Singapore, three partnersWork w/ 57 winegrowers, mainly in Europe, 6 in the USSingapore wine market (~6M population, ~20% Muslim - don't drink)No 3-tier system, no gov't monopolyIt is a pretty open market, like the UKMany players are vertically integrated - import, distribute, retail - with lots of captive distributors and retailersVery low barriers to entry - founded KOT in 2 months for S$200 to get licensing and paperworkHorizontally spread - ~2-3,000 active importers (in 2011, ~700 importers, mainly focused on Australia/NZ with either big brands or high-scoring wines)Two casinos / integrated resorts provided the spark for other wines (e.g., Marina Bay Sands opened in 2011)Generally, 1-1.5 generations behind the UK and US wine marketsTook inspiration from other importers - Kermit Lynch (CA), Louis / Dressner (NY), Yapp Brothers (UK Rhone Specialists) - importing wines others were notYapp - focused on winegrowersDressner - spent a lot of wine visiting growers, good storytellingKermit Lynch - newsletters (1970s) were key to storytelling for the wine growersStorytelling is critical to standing out in a crowded marketSourcing strategy - most wineries they bought from personally (90%) were not represented in SingaporeInformal rule - 5 visits to winegrowers between the three partners before they importBroad portfolios - easier to serve clients and fulfill their needsFocused portfolios - clearer story and differentiationOptimal portfolio size - ~50-70 to give each winegrower ~1 week/year of focusKOT differentiationMarket knowledgeLinks to trade, client baseTrust of the people (have only signed one contract, mainly handshake deals, exclusive relationships) -> been burnt occasionally with generational changeBuild brands in Singapore - a very organic approachGet the right people to taste them - professionals, and influencers / Key Opinion Leaders (“KOL”)Host tastings every year, even for highly allocated wines (e.g., Pierre Gonon)KOLs can drive demandInt'l media have a strong influence - English is the primary languageMore important than local mediaOnly the top few have an impact - The Wine Advocate (Robert Parker), Jancis Robinson (less emphasis on scores, more on editorial content)Robert Parker had a big impact on the local market; a Singaporean bought the company100-point scores can drive sales spikesConsumer data/reviews can start trends, increasingly importantVivino, Wine-Searcher, CellarTracker, Instagram75% wholesale, 25% direct-to-consumer sales (mainly e-commerce)Private clients saw KOT through the pandemicTrade is vital for tourist demandSingaporean wine trendsNew regions increasing, Japanese and Chinese winesValue increasing - ~$20-30 retail, ~$5-10 FOBThe low/no alcohol trend is not a thing yetRose has never been a trend Get access to library episodes Hosted on Acast. I'm excited to share my conversation with Annie Dressner surrounding music and photography. During our chat, Annie unveils her background being a songwriter and photographer, a parallel she draws between songs and pictures, her appreciation for art in general, how she documents touring through photography, her songwriting process, inspiration for her music, writing both autobiographical songs and ones about others' lives, details about her current and upcoming releases, and more. It was a delight having Annie on the show, so I hope you love listening. Are you enjoying Write on Track? Do you have a topic suggestion for an episode? Would you like to be a guest? You know that we are Covid-safe folks and advocate for a society that should take the Coco seriously, but there's so much propaganda, misinformation, ignorance and such around the Novel Coronavirus that we've found it very difficult to navigate the world in 2023 and know how to live in a way that protects us and others from a virus that can potentially fuck up your body permanently.A bit ago, we said offhandedly in an intro that if we had any listeners that were epidemiologists, we'd love to ask some questions about what is safe to do these days. See a movie? Go grocery shopping? Leave the house? We have a VERY literate audience, and a number of epidemiologists listen apparently because we got a number of offers. The first person to reach out was one of our guests today epidemiologist Zoe Spieler, a listener, and her friend Michelle Dressner, another epidemiologist.Even though initially, they were just going to answer our questions privately, a lot of listeners reached out and wanted to know the answers as well, so we asked Zoe and Michie if they'd mind us recording the convo and putting it out as a bonus, and they were game! First of all, HUGE THANKS to them for doing this, and second of all, GIANT THANKS TO THEM because not only did they answer our questions, but Zoe and Michie did a broad survey of the scientific literature first! We get into the current state of the scientific consensus around the Coco, what are the current suggested safe procedures, and a lot of other stuff, including why so many people have lost their goddamn minds these days! Hopefully this will help you as you decide what to do for the holidays!Support the show on Patreon (two extra exclusive episodes a month!) or pre-order a new t-shirt or get a discounted old shirt! Just when I thought the pandemic took out this podcast, Taylor Swift drops a new album and brings the FANGIRL FORUM out of its coronavirus slumber! My friend, Jasmine Carr, is back to review & break down Taylor Swift's eighth album, folklore. Plus, we rank all of Taylor's albums so far. Where does folklore rank? Which albums top our lists? There's only one way to find out. Wrap yourself up in your favorite cardigan and let's get back to doing what we do best: fangirling! At FANGIRL FORUM, Black lives matter and so does mental health. Therapy for Black Girls is a space that was developed to present mental health topics in a way that feels more accessible and relevant when so often the stigma surrounding mental health issues and therapy prevents Black women from taking the step of seeing a therapist. Please check out https://therapyforblackgirls.com/ how you can help support the work they encourage mental wellness to Black women & girls. **Disclaimer: Throughout the episode, Taylor Swift's collaborator on folklore, The National's Aaron Dessner, is mentioned a few times. Unfortunately after recording, I realized I said Dressner instead of Dessner. This was a mistake. I mean no disrespect to Aaron Dessner. I think he and The National are amazing. Seriously, their album is High Violet is a work of art. Follow Meredith on Twitter/Instagram: @MeredithLoftus Don't forget to subscribe, rate, comment, and share with the masses!

State v. Dressner, 2018-0828 (La. 10/29/18). #9: Does a juror's incorrect belief about the law result in juror misconduct? We analyze the juror misconduct issues in State v. Dressner, 2018-0828 (La. 10/29/18). The issues we’re going to discuss are a juror's alleged incorrect beliefs about the law, a juror's mental processes, the Louisiana "Shield Law", which is their state version of Federal Rule of Evidence 606(b); juror affidavits that are inadmissible under these rules; and the presumption that jury follows instructions. Director of the documentary Personal Statement Juliane Dressner and the cast students Karoline Jimenez, Christine Rodriguez, and Enoch Jemmott join me to talk about the film which documents the challenges New York public school students have when applying to college—especially when they are the first generation in their family to make the leap. There is a profound lack of college counselors in public schools which often leaves students on their own to negotiate applications, financial forms, and personal statements. But back in 2005, students themselves got together and created a peer counseling program where they can get the training to help not just themselves but their fellow students as well. Karoline, Christine and Enoch, although they’re facing challenges of their own and struggle with their own college possibilities, embrace their roles as peer counselors and pour their hearts and souls into helping their classmates succeed.
