We're back in Eastern Texas again for this episode, in which Robert Carter joins us to discuss his transition from his early falconry days flying longwings on ducks, to flying red tailed and Harris's hawks on squirrels. He also is one of the first falconers I've talked to that has incorporated poodles to help in his falconry. This is also another good episode that goes into depth more on living by the falconry principle of adapting your falconry to the quarry and opportunities you have available to you, and many thanks again to Randy Watson for helping to make these episodes recorded in Eastern Texas happen! This episode takes us back down to Eastern Texas to talk about some good ol' fashioned squirrel hawking! I have to acknowledge and give props to this episode's guest, Randy Watson, for helping to make a lot of these Texas-based episodes happen with falconers on his side of the state, including the recent Gary Brewer episode. Randy was generous enough to contact me and have me down to get these recordings made late last year, and it was great getting to hear how he met Gary and initially got into falconry. Talking squirrel hawking with other falconers never gets old, and this episode is no exception! I'm a person. And I have a family, and I have a life, and I have a path that I'm trying to figure out. And if I don't balance myself--my mind, my body, my soul--sometimes I do a really good job. Sometimes I flub it up a lot. But if I don't balance me, I'm not going to be a good intuitive.” “You know, they don't ever want to talk about, ‘Remember that time you stole my money, you ass hole!' You know, they never say that!” “They always talk about those moments that took our breath away, not the moments that we lost our breath.” 6:25 April has moved to Texas, she's worked on missing person cases, but her work with balancing herself has not changed. 7:40 Those who are and are NOT pushing our species forward since 2016. 9:37 The 2020 pandemic and its effects on the world. “As a society, we still don't know what it did to us.” 11:22 The positive effects of Covid. “It forced us as a species to look at things we refused to.” 18:21 The paranormal culture in Eastern Texas, the Azalea Inn Bed and Breakfast, and her work with paranormal investigator husband, Braxton Roane. 22:24 Patrick originally met Braxton Roane at an event at Belvoir Winery before he or Patrick even knew April! 29:58 The side effects of paranormal investigation and the traumatizing story of April and Braxton needing an exorcism! “Let's just say Braxton's eyes went from green to blue. They were green, then they went to this period of just slate grey, and then to blue.” “When you realize the devil's looking right at you, it's not a moment where you look away and you run and you lose them.” 31:20 Patrick shared a funny memory about Chip Coffey at Belvoir Winery. 39:34 April talks about her book, Goodnight Just the Same. 42:27 April describes her book, “Love Your Inner Empath: A Healing Workbook & Tool Kit.” 44:12 Food, diet, chocolate, and gravity. April and Patrick get real about it. 45:02 “You are the guru of you. And you honor you. Honor all that your ups and downs has brought you to this moment of awareness. And that is where your adventure begins. What does that awareness say? What do you feel? ‘Oh my life's a sh*t show.' Okay then. Let's fix it. Let's change it. Let's start to seek the joy, whatever that is for you. Leave people alone. They're responsible for their own joy. Then he takes us back in time to the Pleistocene, when a huge ice sheet covered North America and the wooly mammoth roamed the coastal plain. What was the region like, back then? What did it take for the regions early humans to succeed? Jim Neal has answers.

Join us as Jon and Cathy, of Idaho, share their story of meeting in Turkey and traveling back and forth from the states to Turkey while she was teaching abroad. Cathy, having grown up in a military family, had fallen in love with log cabins while living in Alaska. In her early 20's she found a log home company in Eastern Texas and bought a book of floor plans which she kept with her all through the years as she traveled to Europe and back. She used the packet to thumb through to envision her dream log cabin time and again. Eventually, Jon and Cathy got tired of spending summers visiting family and decided to find a place of their own. They bought some land in Montana and were planning out their cabin build. Meanwhile, while visiting Jon's parents in Idaho, a friend told them about a log home he knew of that was for sale. Thinking it wouldn't hurt to take a look, Jon and Cathy fell in love with the cabin the moment they laid eyes on the enormous fireplace, the focal point of the home.  Although they were already "sold" on the place, they continued to walk through the home. Cathy fell in love with the unique stained glass window and adorable "his and hers" bathrooms.  The ladies bathroom was decorated in Purple, Cathy's favorite color. That sealed the deal for them! The home was in very poor condition. The previous owner had used pink fiberglass insulation between the logs instead of chinking. The home was drafty and open for all the bugs of the neighborhood to make a home.  Jon spent the first summer chinking the home and later they stained the inside and outside. After 20 years in the home, they have made beautiful improvements including landscaping, flooring, a kitchen remodel, window upgrades, and adding stone to the exterior. The home is a beautiful log home that will surly last for years to come because of how well they have taken care of it. We hope you enjoy this episode. The year 1999 will mark what is believed to be the 125th anniversary of the birth of Henry "Ragtime Texas" Thomas. When Thomas first recorded for the Vocalion label in the late 1920s, he was already over 50 years old and most assuredly was the eldest African-American performer ever to lay down tracks considered Blues music at the time. Thought to have been born in 1874 in Big Sandy, Texas, Henry was one of nine children by parents who were former slaves and sharecroppers raising cotton. Having a strong dislike for farming, Henry Thomas ran away from home as a teenager and struck upon the life of a hobo and street musician. He traveled by foot with his guitar slung over his shoulder or by the rails throughout most of Eastern Texas, occasionally making his way as far as Chicago. He was also believed to have performed at two World's Fairs crossing over the centuries, the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago and the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
