Tired of the negativity surrounding bass fishing? Join us as we aim for positivity, announce the exciting return of the fan-favorite City Limits fishing show in 2026, and discuss the mission to get more kids fishing in non-traditional areas through initiatives like street fishing – all while hanging out at the bar and celebrating over 10 years of conversation! Welcome to Ike Live at the Bar! In this episode, join Mike, Becky, and Ethan for a fun and engaging conversation. We're dedicated to changing the narrative (particularly in tournament fishing) and focusing on positivity, as negativity has become so prevalent. Get ready for some exciting news! We're announcing the highly anticipated return of the fan-favorite City Limits fishing show in 2026. This show is all about the challenge and excitement of fishing in urban areas and finding success in unexpected places, regardless of the species or method – be it boat, kayak, bank fishing, or even wading. We'll be using social media to find real people to join us as guests. The show will be available on traditional TV and new digital platforms. A major topic this week is the concept of street fishing. We discuss its huge popularity in other countries where boats are not accessible and how we are working hard to bring street fishing to the US. This initiative is directly aimed at getting more kids fishing, particularly those in non-traditional urban environments who may not have access to expensive equipment like bass boats or forward-facing sonar. This aligns perfectly with the mission of The Ike Foundation to connect kids to the outdoors and conservation. Join us as we also touch on the recent Bassmaster Elite event win by Pat Schlapper (who won with 38lbs 12oz) on the difficult Sabine River, discuss the impact of forward-facing sonar and tournament rules, explore the pros and cons of social media in the fishing industry, and celebrate over 10 years of conversation on the Ike Live podcast. We also share updates on upcoming Ike Foundation events like the Celebrity ProAm (June 21st) and the Walk the Talk 5K Run & 1 Mile Walk on May 31st. Episode 31 -The Runaway Scrape, the Battle of San Jacinto, and Independence It's the spring of 1836 and the Alamo has fallen, folks are scared, and many people have no idea what's going to happen. As a result, what has become known as the Runaway Scrape is taking shape. But what was the Runaway Scrape and why isn't it talked about? Many Texans aren't exactly proud of the Runaway Scrape, because it was created by the Texas settlers who fled from their homes when Santa Anna began his drive into Texas starting in February of 1836. Now looking back in time, you can't really blame the settlers for leaving, after all Santa Anna was determined to crush any semblance of independence or revolution. If you look at a map of Texas it's easy to see the first communities that were affected. Those where those who were in the south central portions of the state. This area centered around San Patricio, Refugio, and San Antonio. Those folks actually began to leave in mid January of 1836 when they heard that the Mexican army was gathering on the Rio Grande. Things intensified once Sam Houston arrived in Gonzales on March 11 and learned about the fall of the Alamo. At that time he decided to retreat inland and east towards the Colorado River, and he ordered all local inhabitants to accompany him. Houston sent riders out from Gonzales to spread the news of the fall of the Alamo. Of course, upon hearing this news and knowing there was nothing between themselves and Santa Anna's troops, people began to leave everything and make their way to safety. As a result, this became an extremely large scale evacuation and the temporary capital Washington-on-the-Brazos was deserted by March 17. By April 1 Richmond and settlements on both sides of the Brazos river were  evacuated. As Houston continued to retreat eastward towards the Sabine River he left every settlement between the Colorado and the Brazos defenseless. For their own safety, those settlers began making their way toward Louisiana or Galveston Island. East Texas areas of Nacogdoches and San Augustine ended up abandoned just before April 13. One of the facts that often goes unreported about the flight was how because of the panic there was little or no preparation. There was also significant fear not only because of the Mexican army but also by the frontier Indians. The refugees traveled by any type of transportation they could find, or they walked. They experienced diseases, the weather was cold, wet, and many of them suffered from a lack of food.  Added to the discomforts of travel and their fear were all kinds of diseases, intensified by cold, rain, and hunger. Many of them died and those who did were buried where they fell. The evacuation continued up to and until they received news of Houston's victory in the battle of San Jacinto. The battle of San Jacinto was the final battle of the Texas Revolution. Due to Sam Houston's constant movement to the East, many Texans thought it would never take place. The army left Gonzales on March 13, 1836, crossed the Colorado River on the 17th, and then pitched camp near present day Columbus on the 20th. During the march Houston had been trying to recruit volunteers and with reinforcements from other groups, the army increased its about 1,200. While this was an improvement, scouts reported that there was close to 1325 Mexican troops west of the Colorado. Then on the 25th, they learned that Fannin had been defeated and his men slaughtered in Goliad. and at that point many of the men left to go join their families on the Runaway Scrape.  Houston was not deterred and led his troops to San Felipe de Austin by the 28th and by the 30th they arrived at the Jared E. Groce plantation on the Brazos River. At this time, interim President David G. Burnet ordered Houston to stop his retreat; Secretary of War Thomas J. Rusk urged him to be more decisive in his defense of Texas. Meanwhile Santa Anna decided to take control of the Texas coast and ...

Recorded at the Tin Shed Theater with the wonderful people of Patagonia, Arizona, we talk about Taylor's fascinating career as an educator and artist who challenges our perceptions of borders. David Taylor is a visual artist who works with drone footage, photography, and other art forms to question our sense of place, territory, history, and politics. His artwork challenges how we see the increasingly militarized zone that divides the United States and Mexico. His work is provocative, playful, and harrowing all at once. Taylor, who is also a professor in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Arizona, in Tucson, joined Melissa and Todd from The Border Chronicle for a fascinating conversation and Q&A with the audience in August at Patagonia's Tin Shed Theater. Among many things, Taylor talked about his work Complex, which looks at massive immigrant detention facilities from a drone's eye view. He also discussed DeLIMITations, a work in which he embarked on a cross-country journey with Mexican artist Marcos Ramirez ERRE placing steel obelisks along the U.S.-Mexico boundary as it existed in the early 19th century, ranging from Brookings, Oregon, to the mouth of the Sabine River near Port Arthur, Texas. The Hidden History of Texas
Episode 30 The Alamo

The Hidden History of Texas

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 10, 2023 20:50

In this episode, I discuss perhaps the most famous of all battles, the Alamo. In previous episodes, I've discussed the battles that took place Gonzales, Goliad (La Bahia), and the Siege of Bexar (or San Antonio) which took place from October through December of 1835. I've discussed a group of Texans who were very important in the revolution, the Tejanos, the Mexican Texans. Now it's time to look at the actual battle of the Alamo. Before I get too much into the actual story, I need to mention that there have been at least 8 movies made about the alamo, with the 1st being produced in 1915. It was a silent movie called Martyrs of the Alamo and it was produced by D.W. Griffith. Now, let's be honest and fair. Most of the movies about the battle of the Alamo are nonsense. The first of them, the one by D.W. Griffith was total garbage. Griffith, whose contributions to the movie industry cannot be denied,  was a well-known white supremacist  whose movies all reflected that.  Now the 2004 version is probably the most accurate of the movies made about the battle, but even it took what we call literary license with the events that took place, especially in the use of dialogue. So what really happened? One thing that the movies do get correct is there were some big-name folks who fought there. One of them was David Crockett, from Tennessee,  (by the way his actual fiddle is in the Witte Museum in San Antonio, and I once had a chance to hear it played during a recording session that took place in the Alamo Chapel). On different sides of the battle were two men who had once been friends adventurer James Bowie, and Mexican president Antonio López de Santa Anna. For a large number of Americans and almost all Texans, the battle for the Alamo has become a symbol of patriotic sacrifice and bravery. The men and women who were in the battle were indeed brave and as I mentioned in the beginning, the traditional popular novels, stage plays, and motion pictures, obscure the actual historical event. To understand the reality of the battle, we have to look at why San Antonio and the Alamo itself was strategic. Remember how in December 1835 a Federalist army of Texan (or Texian, as they were called) immigrants, American volunteers, and their Tejano allies had captured San Antonio from the Mexican Army, or the Centralist forces that were there  during the siege of Bexar. As I said in the episode about the Siege of Bexar after the victory, a majority of the Texan volunteers of the "Army of the People" left service and returned to their families. Even though the siege itself was over many members  of the provisional government feared the Centralists would mount a spring offensive. The main issue with that is there were only two main roads leading into Texas from the interior of Mexico.  The first was the Atascosito Road, which stretched from Matamoros on the Rio Grande northward through San Patricio, Goliad, Victoria, and finally into the heart of Austin's colony. The second was the Old San Antonio Road, a Camino real that crossed the Rio Grande at Paso de Francia (the San Antonio Crossing) and wound northeastward through San Antonio de Béxar, Bastrop, Nacogdoches, San Augustine, and across the Sabine River into Louisiana. Each of these roads were blocked by forts. Presidio La Bahía at Goliad and the Alamo at San Antonio. Each spot served almost like an early warning system, ready to alert the Texas settlements of any enemy advance. The Bexar garrison, or the Alamo was commanded by James Clinton Neill. While James Walker Fannin, Jr., took over the forces at Goliad. Many of the settlers had returned to home and that meant that some newly arrived American volunteers made up a majority of the troops at Goliad and Bexar. Both Neill and Fannin were determined to stall the Centralists on the frontier and not let them easily move inland, but they were not delusional. Without speedy reinforcements,

Jerry Lovelady is an American poet, a Texas native living in Beaumont, Texas where he teaches High School English. He is married to his lovely wife of 27 years, Kristi, who is the subject of many of his poems. Jerry has two books out, the first in 2021 titled Other Worlds, in Other Words and Grief and Her Three Sisters published in November, 2022. Both were published by the independent publisher Atmosphere Press. Lovelady draws much of his inspiration from the "Mystic" poets: Walt Whitman, Emily Dickenson, and Robert Frost who got their inspirations from Nature and man interacting in spiritual ways which they recognized as important. Frost, in particular, impressed Lovelady early on with his amazing rhyming ability and the quaint, down to earth characters he wrote about. Lovelady is prone to personify the stars, the rivers and mountains in much of his poetry to good effect. He believes Nature has much to teach us if we would only listen and open our eyes to what is going on around us.   Lovelady has lived in Florida, New Jersey, California, Georgia, and Arizona and is just as at home in a large city urban environment as he is on a river bank in the woods. He and his wife are well travelled enjoying their trips to Europe. They equally enjoy relaxing at their rustic cabin on the Sabine River in deep East Texas which has been a source of inspiration to Lovelady for two decades. Lovelady began writing poetry in 1997, working sporadically until he accumulated enough to publish in 2020. He is currently working on his third book of poems which should be ready to publish by the end of 2023. https://jerryloveladypoetry.com https://instagram.com/loveladyjerry https://facebook.com/lovelady_jerry

Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon has served in this office for more than 15 years. First elected to public office in 1975 as Chair of the Jefferson Parish Council, he then served in the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1981-2001. His public service career also includes 33 years in the Louisiana Army National Guard where he retired with the rank of Colonel and received the prestigious Legion of Merit medal.  "Everything depends on insurance. Our homes, life, protection of our family, our businesses, and our economy, all depend on insurance. Insurance commissioners across the country are tasked with keeping insurance affordable and available. That requires a balance between protecting consumers and making insurance available at a reasonable price for consumers." The past two hurricane seasons have been the worse since Katrina and Rita. Louisiana had fifteen years of relatively quiet hurricanes seasons. But given the location of our state, Louisiana is in the center of the Gulf and we get hit more on a per capita basis than any other state by far. "Hurricane Ida's core of probability for landfall stretched from the Sabine River on our western border to the Pearl River on the eastern border. It never left. It was always headed to Louisiana." Hurricanes Laura and Ida were the second most powerful hurricanes in history with 150 miles per hour winds, only surpassed by the 1856 "Last Island Hurricane" which brought devastation to Southern Louisiana with 156 miles per hour winds. Laura resulted in $9.6 Billion dollars in insurance losses; Ida has resulted so far in $10.6 Billion in losses. As a result of the staggering claims, some Louisiana insurers have gone bust. Fortunately, the Louisiana Insurance Guaranty Association ("LIGA") is in place to protect property and casualty policyholders Recovery from LIGA is capped at $500,000 per person and $500,000 per occurrence, a benefit that only eight other states, besides Louisiana, in the U. S. provide. Donelon looked back to the days of Governor Kathleen Blanco as an example of how the state worked to keep private insurers afloat in the aftermath of massive claims following Katrina and Rita. Without these private insurers, the State of Louisiana would have to become the insurer for all levels of risk, not just those that are currently covered by the Louisiana Citizens Property Insurance Company (which covers those unable to get private insurance due to special circumstances). Working to create incentives to attract companies to our market after many carriers left the state due to the high risk of doing business post-Katrina, Blanco also worked to have our first statewide building code enacted to ensure that structures were built more able to "weather the storms." It's always best to prepare yourself for the damage that may be caused by a hurricane. For the department's tips on hurricane preparedness, visit https://www.ldi.la.gov/consumers/insurance-type/homeowners/hurricane-resource-center. A package of bills are currently working their way through the Louisiana Legislature as a means to protect consumers of insurance products. Deemed "The Catastrophe Reform Package," they include the following: Create the “Louisiana Fortify Homes Program," patterned after a similar program in Alabama, to provide grants for homeowners to retrofit their roofs and homes to a higher standard better able to withstand hurricane winds. The "Three Adjuster Rule" which would kick in after a policyholder is assigned a third adjuster. At that point, a new primary contact must be assigned who will remain on the case until the claim is closed and the company must also provide two methods of contacting the permanent adjuster."Additional Living Expense" would clarify that coverage for living expenses for up to 14 days incurred after an evacuation, whether mandated or voluntary, would be provided to policyholders. Minimum Capital and Surplus Requirements would be raise...

It is as isolated as the back side of a blue moon.Into town comes Doc Bannister wearing a straw boater and a white suit. He is the miracle man. He has a homemade doodlebug machine that, he says, can find oil and make them all rich. Oil, he swears, lies beneath the blistered farmstead of Eudora Durant. She thinks Doc is a flim flam man. The sheriff believes he is a con artist. Both are convinced that Doc has come to town to swindle every dime he can get before hitting the road again. Ashland knows Doc may be crooked, but he has brought hope to a town that had no hope.Eudora has everything Doc wants. She is a beautiful woman who owns cheap land. In Ashland, she is known as the scarlet woman. Whispers say she murdered her husband. No one has seen him since the night they heard a shotgun blast on her farm. The town wants oil. Doc wants Eudora. But Eudora is too independent and stubborn to fall for the charms of a silver-tongued charlatan. She holds the fate of Ashland in her hands. Will she let Doc drill? The rush to the Louisiana border was known to the Texans as the Runaway Scrape, the Great Runaway, or the Sabine Shoot. Whatever one calls it, the wild exodus was a nightmare of terror and suffering for women and children across the Lone Star State. It was only their burning desire for retribution that made it possible for them to keep going. REMEMBER THE ALAMO! REMEMBER GOLIAD! COME AND TAKE IT! Dilue Rose Harris told her story for the Eagle Lake Headlight in Eagle Lake, Texas, in 1900. Delicate women trudged from day to day until their shoes were literally worn out and continued their journey to the east with bare feet, lacerated and bleeding at almost every step. Their clothes were scant and provided no means of shelter from frequent drenching downpours and bitterly cold winds. --- Soldier from the Battle of San Jacinto In efforts to escape the tyranny of General Santa Anna, the older men, women, and children found the few ferries to cross the waterways could not accommodate the large volumes of traffic. At Lynch's Ferry, over five thousand people were waiting to get across. --- Dilue Rose Harris In the group of women with Dilue Rose Harris, one recalled in her memoirs that there were very few white men in the hundreds in her group. The African Americans seemed to be the protectors of most of the families. She had nothing but the highest praise for the Men of Color without whose help they may never have succeeded. --Mary S. Helm Not wishing the women and children to see their homes put to the torch in Gonzales, Texas, Sam Houston led the civilians out of the small community. Then he ordered that no roof large enough to shelter a Mexican's head should be left standing. Finally, the women of the Runaway Scrape or the Sabine Shoot, or the Great Runaway justifiably could regard themselves as Veterans of the Texas Revolution. They endured dangers and hardships as harsh as those faced by their soldier-husbands. Not as commonly lauded over the last almost two hundred years, their efforts were just as important. Santa Anna had no secret of his objective. He wanted to drink a cup of coffee from the waters of the Sabine River and, on the way, rid Texas of all perfidious foreigners. His campaign ended on April 21, 1836. #texashistory #texas #history #igtexas #travel #traveltexas #easttexas #texastodo #texasphotography #truetexas #sanantonio #visittexas #roadtrip #photography #smalltown #tx #architecture #smalltowntexas #texashighways #houston #exploretexas #texashillcountry More Novels from SIDNEY ST. Before Father Miguel Hidalgo was captured by Royalist forces in March of 1811, he commissioned a modest but vocal supporter from the Rio Grande Valley as his emissary to the United States. With a dozen or so loyal followers, that emissary - José Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara - escaped Royalist capture and crossed over the Sabine, where he would spend the next two years rallying recruits and resources to the cause of Mexican independence.Multiple contemporary accounts of the Battle of Medina relate the Republican army's route to the battlefield. Unfortunately, they almost all relate it differently or contradict each other in some material point. Despite their contradictions and ambiguities, what details might they have in common?

It can be quite difficult to foreclose a property, but sometimes, you just have to do it. When a borrower has seized making payments, the lender must take some actions before things get worse. In this foreclosure journal, Keith talks about foreclosing on an owner-financed note. He talks about what you need to know with foreclosure as he shares his own personal experience of dealing with a client in this situation, including the difficulties in contact as well as the effects of natural disasters to the property. He walks you each step of the foreclosure process, highlighting his motto of having insurance. Furthermore, he covers the difference between an owner occupant and an investor, and then letting you in on his exit strategy. — Listen to the podcast here: The Foreclosure Journal – Part 1: Foreclosing On An Owner Financed Note This is episode number 42. I just want to let you know that I appreciate sharing with me your most valuable asset, and that is your time. I hope I can make everything worth your while. It is my goal to provide private lenders just like you and me with help in mitigating risks and increasing our yields and opening doors for bigger and brighter possibilities, bigger and brighter yields and return on investment as well. Our topic is foreclosure and I have started the foreclosure process or moving towards starting the foreclosure process. My goal is to walk you through each step of the way and share with you what’s happened, how we got here and share my thoughts. Maybe I’ll share my feelings too because this is where the healing begins. I'd like to thank http://countytaxsaleapp.org/ (CountyTaxSaleApp.org) for their sponsorship of this show, especially http://privatelenderpodcast.com/plp-028/ (Sammy Gupta). Please go check them out. You can’t find a cheaper lead generation tool out there for less than $0.03 a day. It doesn’t matter what device you have or where you are in the world, you can still invest in Harris County, Texas, the third largest in the nation. It’s a good deal. Please check them out. The Situation Let's start with the nitty-gritty, foreclosure. What happened? We started actively seeking distressed owners. We found one for a house that was in Port Arthur. It's very much an industrial town, part of the Golden Triangle, east of Houston. It's along the coast and very close to the border of Louisiana, the Sabine River. It’s the hometown of a lot of people, Janis Joplin for one and many others. The Golden Triangle is home to a lot of famous athletes and even some actors as well. We found this house and we were able to negotiate the purchase of the house that was in a very bad shape and had a lot of back taxes owed up on it. We negotiated with the owner to purchase it for what was owed in taxes. He was also getting tired of getting citations from the City of Port Arthur when they would come and cut the grass for him. He was happy to get rid of it. What we did, because it was in such bad shape, rather than going in and spending a lot of money and doing a fix and flip on the rehab, we decided, “Let’s go ahead and just try to owner finance this.” We paid cash for the house and ended up selling it last August of 2017 for $30,000 owner finance at 10% interest and we put it out over to ten years. If you don't do everything by the letter of the law, it can really hurt you.https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=http://privatelenderpodcast.com/plp-042/&text=If%20you%20don%27t%20do%20everything%20by%20the%20letter%20of%20the%20law%2C%20it%20can%20really%20hurt%20you.&related (Click To Tweet) Everything closed, everything went fine because the person who was buying the house was not an investor but rather was going to be the owner-occupant. We went through a residential mortgage loan originator who vetted our potential buyer/borrower. Once they did their magic and they crunched the numbers, we figured out that we...
