In This Episode ...Access to project-based learning resources can be extremely helpful to keep students focused and engaged during virtual learning. The 3M Young Scientist Challenge provides middle school students with an opportunity to employ critical thinking to identify innovative solutions to real-world problems through a digital platform that is easy to access from anywhere. All of the resources parents and educators need to support a student submitting an entry for the challenge, including idea starters, best practices from past finalists and step-by-step instructions. are available at YoungScientistLab.com and it only takes a 1 to 2-minute video to get the process started. During this challenging time, Discovery Education and 3M are committed to supporting the next generation of young scientists by continuing with the 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge and providing educational materials at no-cost to students across the United States. Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have extended the 2020 3M Young Scientist Challenge Deadline through May 7, 2020. About Hannah HerbstHannah Herbst has a passion for learning, solving problems, and helping others. She graduated from Florida Atlantic University High School in 2019, and is finishing her bachelor's degree at Florida Atlantic University in 2020. Hannah won the 2015 Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge, earning the title of "America's Top Young Scientist", was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2018, and was awarded first place and Best of Category at the http://www.hannahherbst.com/all-science-fair.html (Intel International Science and Engineering Fair) in 2019. She has received 6 http://www.hannahherbst.com/awards.html (research grants) from Florida Atlantic University and has delivered keynote addresses at the United Nations, USA Science and Engineering Festival, Social Innovation Summit, National Science Olympiad Competition, and World Science Festival.  Hannah created an ocean energy probe prototype that seeks to offer a stable power source to developing countries using untapped energy from ocean currents. This innovation was inspired by Hannah's desire to help her nine-year-old penpal living in Sub-Saharan Africa, where many people live in energy poverty with sporadic or no access to electricity. In addition, Hannah has explored early identification methods for hazardous airborne chemicals in collaboration with I-SENSE at Florida Atlantic University, and is currently studying the properties of shark skin for medical applications at the Florida Atlantic Biomechanics Lab.    Proving Einstein Right on Amazon  Jim Gates is the Ford Foundation Professor of Physics, and the Director of The Brown University Theoretical Physics Center. He is a 2013 recipient of the National Medal of Science He was a Distinguished University Professor, University System of Maryland Regents Professor, John S. Toll Professor of Physics, and Director of the Center for String and Particle Theory. Gates is well known for his pioneering work in supersymmetry and supergravity, and his 1977 doctoral dissertation on supersymmetry earned him a prominent place in the early development of the field, as did the 1984 book he co-authored, Superspace, or One thousand and one lessons in supersymmetry, which is widely considered the first comprehensive book on the subject. His study of string theory and supersymmetry has recently led Gates to develop an interest in what are called adinkras. Adinkra symbols are graphical representations of supersymmetric algebras named after symbols created by the Asante people. Adinkras may help us understand the structure of the universe, although Gates cautions, “most of the time when we make up ideas, they’re wrong. However, when we get it right, it’s amazing.” Gates is also a pioneer in another respect, having been the first African American to hold an endowed chair in physics at a major U.S. research university. He comes to Brown with a mission to increase the participation of historically underrepresented groups in the sciences. Gates is a former scientific advisor to President Barack Obama, Gates is also a member of the National Academy of Sciences, as well as the board of trustees of Society for Science & the Public, and one of the USA Science and Engineering Festival’s “Nifty Fifty.” More information on Professor Jim Gates  https://sites.brown.edu/sjgates/ Other books by Cathy Pelletier @Dr_JimGates   Learn more about your ad choices. The nation’s largest STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) celebration took place this past weekend at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. The 5th USA Science and Engineering Festival featured more than 3,000 exhibits, 30 stage shows and attracted approximately 350,000 people. This year’s theme was “Where can STEM take you?” and the primary goal of the weekend was to inspire the thousands of kids in attendance. The hands-on festivities of the weekend included playing games with robots, flight simulators, going on virtual reality space missions and our personal favorite here at NRPA, designing your own dream park. This was our first year exhibiting at the STEM fest, and we wanted to show festival goers that parks and recreation centers are a great place for youth to engage in the variety of STEM programs that are being offered at many park and rec agencies across the country. The highlight of my time at the STEM fest was asking kids if they enjoyed going to their local parks, and seeing their eyes light up. Once I asked them to draw what their dream park would look like, and that they could include anything they wanted, they eagerly grabbed a piece of paper and crayons and let their imaginations run wild. Seeing the joy and excitement that these kids got out of being able to design their dream park brought me back to my childhood when all I wanted was a park where I could ride omalimphs (yes, that’s what I called elephants), have life-size Lego houses and pools full of Nickelodeon slime. Kids love their parks, even if they don’t have friendly dragons, unicorns, or ice cream airplanes. If I ever had any doubt in my mind about that, my faith was restored this weekend. As park and recreation professionals, we are in such a great position to offer programs and activities that inspire the next generation, get them active and keep their creativity and imaginations alive and well. Implementing STEM programs that are both fun and educational is a great start, and the rewards are priceless. I had a blast at the STEM fest this weekend, and thanks to all the kids who took me on imaginary tours of their dream parks — and a very special thank you to their very patient parents! Maloy also introduces us to some of the work being done at The J. Craig Venter Institute in San Diego, Ca.     Watch as Maloy introduces us to the power of microbes through demonstrations of waste tunred into energy, termites living off a diet of wood, and the radiation resistant power of microbes. Maloy also takes us on a tour of the The DiscoverGenomics! Mobile Laboratory which travels around the Washington D.C. area visiting schools that otherwise wouldn't get the chance to see science in action.
