During his time as an Artist in Residence (AIR) at the SETI Institute, visual artist, psychiatrist, and psychoanalyst Martin Wilner invited prominent SETI Institute scientists to participate in his ongoing project, The Case Histories. Interested in exploring how scientists relate to the possibility of encountering an alien life form, Wilner invited researchers such as Jill Tarter, Seth Shostak, and Franck Marchis to send him daily messages and share thoughts of interest. These messages, filtered through the prism of psychoanalytical principles, were then transformed into drawings and visualized as daily elements of a calendar. More recently, Wilner has expanded his conversations into the realm of AI, an “alien” intelligence that is already in our midst. In this conversation, hosted by SETI AIR Director Bettina Forget, discover how Wilner weaves connections between the human mind, machine learning, consciousness, and our ideas about extraterrestrial life. Nearly 40 years ago, on November 20, 1984, the SETI Institute was incorporated with inaugural officers CEO Thomas Pierson and SETI scientist Jill Tarter. The goal was to provide SETI researchers with a place to grow the search for life beyond Earth. What began with one NASA-funded SETI project and two people has since grown to include over 100 researchers and various scientific areas of study, all seeking to understand the origins and prevalence of life and intelligence in the universe. As a part of our outreach and education efforts, we grew our presence on the Internet, reaching out to a wide audience through our website, social media, and livestreams like SETI Live. We have education programs across all age ranges. We produce the weekly podcast Big Picture Science. And today, we celebrate all of these accomplishments and look forward to the next 40 years of science. Join host and senior planetary astronomer Franck Marchis as he chats with SETI Institute President and CEO Bill Diamond, senior astronomer and Big Picture Science co-host Seth Shostak, long-time Board of Directors member Andrew Fraknoi, and the Director of the Carl Sagan Center Nathalie Cabrol. Author Mark Gober has served on the board of the Institute of Noetic Sciences since 2019. He revealed that most people probably haven't thought to question fundamental beliefs about health and disease. For example, do bacteria cause disease, or are they part of the body's cleanup crew that appears at the scene of an underlying toxicity or injury? Do researchers follow the scientific method when they claim to isolate viruses and show that they cause disease in their hosts? Gober told George he is skeptical of some of these claims and said he feels other scientists don't focus enough on the intellectual and spiritual influences on health. “It's difficult to challenge the materialist view of consciousness, which is the idea that consciousness is stuck in our skull,” he explained. “Much of what the Institute of Noetic Sciences looks at is the evidence that this is not true, and the implications (of that.)”Gober noted that he feels much of Western medicine, which employs an allopathic approach – or treating symptoms and diseases with drugs and surgery – “does not seem appropriate in terms of looking at health and disease.” While it's “understandable for doctors who are dealing with many patients” who “just need to get that person well,” he continued, “from my perspective, we need to get to the root cause of why people are getting sick in order to try to figure out the appropriate remedies.” He said understanding consciousness is a big part of figuring out why folks get sick. “When I don't see doctors talking about (consciousness), to me, it's just a red flag,” he said. He explained that while most allopathic doctors think that consciousness is in the brain, and not something to be considered in treating illness that isn't directly related to the brain, “if (consciousness) is more like a soul – which I think there's a lot of evidence for that – then the body becomes a vessel for that soul.” Therefore, he claimed, consciousness needs to be considered in any treatment. But, unfortunately, “that's not the way modern medicine typically regards health.”-------------------------------------------------------------Researcher and documentary filmmaker, Darcy Weir, has chosen to explore some of the most intriguing topics of discussion today, including UFOs and cryptids. He joined George to discuss his recent film, Transmedium: Fastmovers & USOs, as well as the mysterious world of NASA-related UFO encounters in space. Those topics included the role of SETI and the likelihood (or lack of) that they will actually receive or send a message that isn't thousands of years old by the time it arrives, and the role of scientists like Seth Shostak who continues to work with SETI while discounting UFO evidence such as that disclosed by military whistle-blowers.Weir discussed his recent and upcoming documentary films on UFO phenomena as well. His most recent focuses in part on the phenomenon of USOs or Unidentified Submersible Objects – essentially UFOs that go under the water. He explained that he believes many submarines have encountered USOs, which they call “fast movers,” and even documented them on sonar. “It's almost like an open secret that they're noticing these operating in our oceans with superior speeds to anything we can operate,” he said. “A submarine goes a maximum of about 35 to 40 knots,” he continued, while a torpedo – creating an air bubble in front of it to reduce friction – can get up to 70 knots. But the items spotted on sonar move even faster; and unlike our technology, which is limited to either the air or the sea, these objects can readily move from air to sea and back again, making them truly transmedium. “They… exhibit the capability of moving from our oceans to our atmosphere to space with no friction, no regard for physics as we know them.” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/georgenoory/message
In this thought-provoking episode, guest Seth Shostak engages in a dialogue about the enigmatic reality of UFOs, challenging the boundaries between science, mysticism, and the universal quest for truth within the cosmos. Shostak, a sceptic, discusses misinterpretations surrounding UFO sightings, including cases involving Navy pilots, emphasizing scientific explanations over extraterrestrial theories. The conversation explores unidentified aerial phenomena, scientific methods for investigation, and the intriguing concept of multidimensional realms suggested by cosmic religions. This episode underscores the complexity of unexplained phenomena and the importance of keeping an open mind in the pursuit of understanding the vast, unknown universe. https://sethshostak.com/ https://www.seti.org/our-scientists/seth-shostak 00:00 Welcome to Mystic Cast: Exploring the Cosmos and Beyond 00:32 Diving into UFOs: Skepticism and Beliefs 04:00 The SETI Institute's Quest for Extraterrestrial Intelligence 10:32 Exploring the Multiverse with the Ethereus Society 11:36 The Science of Astral Projection and Multidimensional Realms 12:38 Debating the Validity of Multidimensional Theories 18:50 Exploring Consciousness and Reincarnation 19:51 The Science of Medicine and Anecdotal Evidence 21:37 Investigating Past Lives and Scientific Validity 22:16 UFO Sightings and Interpreting Phenomena 24:07 The Debate on Extraterrestrial Evidence 29:07 The Role of Belief in Science 35:21 Concluding Thoughts on Science and Belief

Gene and cohost Tim Swartz present Mark Christopher Lee, a singer-songwriter in the cult indie band The Pocket Gods since 1998. As a filmmaker, he presents “God Vs. Aliens,” which looks into whether life as we know and perceive it is just a simulation designed and controlled by extra terrestrials for some unknown purpose. This theory would then make religion and even the idea of God as a construct of the computer game and thereby the Aliens controlling it. This films explores this theory and its impact on the world's religions should we make first contact, and especially if that contact would actually negate our physical existence and any notion of God as real. Featured in the film are former UK Ministry of Defence staffer Nick Pope, Harvard astronomer Professor Avi Loeb, and UFO skeptic Seth Shostak. As a working musician, Lee has long advocated for fair royalties for artists, especially on such music streaming services as Apple Music and Spotify. He says that musicians routinely get underpaid for their work by the music industry and they have released albums of 30-second songs since 2015 to highlight the lack of fair royalties.

Seth Shostak joins Tim to talk about the serious scientific search for intelligent life beyond Earth. Seth is the senior astronomer at the SETI Institute, which was created by NASA and is located in Silicon Valley. It is dedicated to the search for life beyond Earth. In this episode, Seth talks about what we're learning about the potential for finding intelligent life, not only within our solar system, but well beyond it. This episode was first released on November 21, 2021. https://traffic.libsyn.com/forcedn/shapingopinion/Encore_-_Life_in_Outer_Space.mp3 The SETI Institute was created on November 20th, 1984 as part of NASA. NASA located it close to its Ames Research Center in Northern California. Its mission has been as ominous as it has been ambitious, to look for intelligent life beyond our planet. Before the SETI Institute, NASA had funded a small project in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, but it quickly realized the job was bigger than it had anticipated. NASA wanted to find ways to put more money into research without too much overhead. That led to the idea of creating a nonprofit organization that would focus on research and education around the search for extra-terrestrial life beyond Earth. This vision was born in 1984 with the founding of the SETI Institute. Since then, the SETI Institute has spun out from NASA and has grown in many ways. Seth Shostak is the Institute's senior astronomer. In addition to his work on the Institute's research programs, he's also an author on books about astrobiology. He's published hundreds of articles, and he's a regular contributor to NBC News. He's also the host of the SETI Institute's weekly science radio show called, “Big Picture Science.” Please Thank Our Sponsors Please remember to thank our sponsors, without whom the Shaping Opinion podcast would not exist. Crashed crafts, non-human biologics, and the Pentagon in possession of UFOs. Last week, former military and intelligence figures appeared as whistleblowers at a U.S. congressional hearing, testifying about the government's apparent secrecy around UAPs: unidentified anomalous phenomena. But one former air force intelligence official, David Grusch, claimed the Pentagon collected non-human organic material and that he knew where it was keeping UFOs. Researchers searching the universe for alien life say this is far from proof they're among us. Today, Seth Shostak explains. As the search for extraterrestrial intelligence from beyond Earth continues, many scientists are now wondering whether the eventual discovery of ET may come in the form of a technology--perhaps even artificial intelligence--that was created by aliens, rather than the actual biological lifeforms themselves. Joining us this week to discuss these possibilities is Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at the SETI institute. We dive into the potential existence of alien A.I, as well as NASA's forthcoming UAP study, and much more this week on The Micah Hanks Program.
