Synopsis: What do courtroom litigation, computational biology, and fibrosis drug development have in common? In this episode of Biotech 2050, host Alok Tayi speaks with Ahmed Mousa, CEO of Vicore Pharma, to explore his unconventional journey from biotech law to the C-suite. Ahmed shares how Vicore is advancing a first-in-class therapy targeting the angiotensin II type 2 receptor to treat idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF)—a devastating disease with limited options and poor survival. The conversation dives into how AI is reshaping drug discovery, the promise of precision in early-stage candidate design, and the regulatory and data challenges biotech must overcome. Ahmed also reflects on leading a Swedish-listed biotech as an American CEO, and how a patient-first mission continues to fuel bold innovation across continents. Biography: Ahmed Mousa is the Chief Executive Officer of Vicore Pharma (VICO.ST), where he leads the company's mission to advance angiotensin II type 2 receptor agonists for the treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and other serious diseases. Under his leadership, Vicore continues to expand its clinical pipeline and global presence in respiratory and fibrotic diseases. Previously, Ahmed served as Senior Vice President, Chief Business Officer, and General Counsel at Pieris Pharmaceuticals (PIRS). In this role, he was the site head for the company's Boston office and oversaw business development, portfolio strategy, centralized project leadership, and quality assurance. He also led Pieris' legal and intellectual property functions, including licensing, corporate governance, and management of the company's global patent portfolio. Before joining Pieris, Ahmed was an attorney at Covington & Burling LLP, where he advised pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies on a range of regulatory and intellectual property matters. He also served as a law clerk for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and began his legal career as an IP associate at Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Ahmed holds dual undergraduate degrees in Molecular Biology and Government from Cornell University, a Master's in Biotechnology from Johns Hopkins University, and a J.D. with honors from Georgetown Law, where he was Editor-in-Chief of the Georgetown Journal of International Law.

Epinephrine auto-injectors, first developed in the 1970s, are the most common emergency treatments for anaphylaxis, often deadly allergic reactions. The limitations of liquid epinephrine and the device's decades-old technology have kept these life-saving devices out of patients' hands. Austin-based startup Windgap Medical, Inc. plans to break these barriers with a more convenient, shelf-stable alternative. In Episode 41 of the MedTech Speed to Data podcast Key Tech's Andy Rogers and Thomas James sit down with Windgap's co-founder and Chief Business Officer, Brent Buchine, to discuss the data-driven development of the company's life-saving technology.Need to know·       Epinephrine auto-injectors are big business — A $1.3 billion market at Windgap's founding, sales of epinephrine auto-injectors exceeded $3.1 billion in 2024.·       Few eligible patients get these life-saving devices — Only 52% of American food allergy patients ever receive prescriptions, and epinephrine auto-injectors are only available in 32% of the world's 195 countries.·       Traditional auto-injectors are relatively large and inconvenient — Only 55% of patients with prescriptions report having immediate access to their auto-injectors.·       Liquid epinephrine is thermally unstable — Doses lose their effectiveness with prolonged heat exposure, forcing patients to refill their prescriptions more frequently. The nitty-grittyBuchine and his co-founders saw an opportunity to make epinephrine delivery more convenient and accessible. “We developed a freeze-dried version of epinephrine to make it more stable and double, if not triple, the shelf life,” Buchine explains. However, lyophilization introduces an extra step in the treatment process. The dried epinephrine must be rehydrated and mixed in a solution before injection.“If you have a rescue product for emergency use, you have to get it very quickly,” Buchine says. “With modest training, you need to make sure people know how to use the product because their life is at risk if it doesn't work.”Windgap's ANDI® platform is a small, highly portable single-dose auto-injector, Buchine explains. “Simply twisting the cap automatically rehydrates that dose in a couple of seconds — no shaking, no swirling required. It's ready to inject by pressing the device next to the injection site.”Windgap and its pharmaceutical clients are still in the commercialization phase, but the company is already looking at the future of complex injectables.“We see that, fundamentally, formulation pipelines are getting more and more challenging,” Buchine says. “You have multiple injections, you have mixing, you have high viscosity/high volume. The conventional options out there are not as suitable anymore. We're solving those problems specifically because we think there's an opportunity to be best in class in that area.”Data that made the difference:Developing combination products is a multi-stakeholder problem. “It's drug, it's device, it's patient, it's prescriber, it's payer. You've got to think about all of those stakeholders along your development.”Get in front of stakeholders to understand the problem. “We did a lot of surveys and uncovered the opportunity. Patients weren't getting prescriptions filled or weren't even going to the doctor to get prescriptions. It was that segment that we spent a lot of time talking to.”Listen to your customers. “We'll talk to pharmaceutical companies [and ask] what are some of the biggest challenges you're facing in your pipeline? And then you just listen. Over time, you look for that recurring theme. That's what really drove our product strategy.”Use data to convince investors. “There was a vastly underserved market. Our ability to communicate that to investors and help them understand the opportunity of taking [at the time] a $1.3 billion business to something substantially above that.”

Crisis What Crisis?
HAPPINESS EXPERT on using mathematics to survive unimaginable grief - MO GAWDAT

Crisis What Crisis?

From the boardrooms of Google X to the depths of unimaginable grief, Mo Gawdat's journey defies every conventional narrative about success and loss. The former Chief Business Officer, who helped launch Google's operations across half the planet, lost his son Ali in 2014 to a routine operation gone wrong – a tragedy that could have broken him forever. Instead, it became the catalyst for an extraordinary mission: to make one billion people happier.Armed with a mathematician's mind and a mystic's heart, Mo has transformed personal devastation into global purpose. He spent 12 years researching happiness with his son Ali and created a formula that now underpins his bestselling books – Solve for Happy, Scary Smart, and That Little Voice in Your Head – as well as the #OneBillionHappy movement, which has already reached nearly 100 million people. His podcast Slo Mo is a regular #1 Mental Health show in the UK.Whether he's advising governments on tech ethics, writing about AI's sentience in real time, or helping people engineer their way out of despair, Mo is living proof that happiness isn't just wishful thinking – it's a learnable, repeatable skill that can reshape the way you live your life.LESSONS YOU'LL LEARNDeath is transformation, not termination. Mo's mathematical approach to consciousness reveals that our physical form is just an avatar – the real you exists beyond space and time.Emotions are visitors, not residents. Feel them, acknowledge them, embrace them – then ask what action you can take. Wallowing in misery brings no one back and helps no one forward.Follow the happiness flow chart. Three questions can take you from despair to clarity in seven seconds: Is this thought true? Can I fix it? If not, can I accept it and make tomorrow better?Pride is pointless, gratitude is everything. When you recognise how much of your success came from blessings beyond your control, humility becomes your superpower and service becomes your calling.Your crisis is not your conclusion. The worst moment of Mo's life became the launching pad for the most meaningful work he's ever done – proving that rock bottom can be the foundation for everything that comes next.----Host: Andy CoulsonCWC team: Jane Sankey, Hana Walker-Brown, Mabel Pickering and Rex FisherWith special thanks to Ioana Barbu and the brilliant people at GlobalFor all PR and guest approaches please contact – podcast@coulsonpartners.com

Imagine waking up to a world run by hyper-intelligent machines. It sounds like science fiction, but Mo Gawdat, former Chief Business Officer at Google X, bestselling author, and renowned happiness evangelist, says it's coming faster than you think. In this gripping episode, Mo shares a prophetic vision that's equal parts warning and hope. As we hurtle toward a future where artificial intelligence holds unimaginable power, Mo argues we are at a tipping point: AI will either magnify our flaws or elevate humanity to unprecedented heights. But first, brace yourself for a dystopian phase, driven not by technology itself, but by our own deeply flawed ethics.Mo passionately explains why Africa, especially, must urgently stake its claim in the rapidly emerging "digital soil," warning that delay could lead to decades of digital colonization. Yet, his message isn't purely cautionary. He shows us a clear, optimistic path to harness AI as a force for true abundance, joy, and human flourishing—provided we take responsibility now. Will we raise AI to be Superman or a supervillain? “Verification is no longer a nice-to-have—it's a must-have,” says Gegham Azatyan, Co-Founder and Chief Business Officer at Dexatel, in a conversation with Doug Green, Publisher of Technology Reseller News. In this episode, Azatyan introduces Dexatel Verify, a new CPaaS solution designed to intelligently authenticate users across multiple channels in real time. Founded in 2015, Dexatel helps global brands build secure and reliable customer communication through SMS, voice, email, and chat apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Viber. Now, with the launch of Dexatel Verify, the company is addressing the rising challenges of online fraud, fake accounts, and high messaging costs—particularly in markets where SMS pricing is prohibitive or unreliable. Gegham Azatyan Unlike traditional one-time password (OTP) solutions, Dexatel Verify uses smart fallback logic, a system that dynamically selects the best communication channel for each user and region. If a text message fails, the system might try a voice call or switch to WhatsApp or RCS—all automatically and in real time. This innovation isn't just about efficiency—it's also about cost savings. “Customers using fallback logic can save up to 30%,” Azatyan notes, especially those in high-volume industries like fintech, e-commerce, healthcare, and education. The solution is also fully compliant with GDPR and ISO 27001, making it suitable for businesses operating in regulated sectors. As Dexatel expands into the U.S. and Canadian markets, Azatyan sees Verify as a critical enabler for companies onboarding new users securely and affordably—turning customer verification into a seamless, cost-effective, and fraud-resistant process. We will never get enough of DEI's story - a tale of victory, perseverance, and ultimately, demise. The people who spent years there have memories from behind the curtain of the team we once all cheered for, and Ty Norris's interview in 2021 was absolutely a testament to that.  From early on in his career, Dale Earnhardt had his eye on hiring Ty Norris, until he finally succeeded in landing him at DEI. Ty shares some of the challenges he faced along the way from both the highest of highs and lowest of lows of the team. He reminisces about his old pal, Dale Earnhardt, and about the life lessons he learned from him along the way - right, wrong, or indifferent. After the Intimidator's untimely death at Daytona, DEI was left without its leader and Ty describes how he dealt with the rising tensions within the company. He eventually reveals his opinion on the only way to have saved the sinking ship which was DEI, which was for Dale Earnhart Jr. to be its leader, which is what his dad would have wanted. An emotional story Ty shares about a father-son moment between Dale Sr. and Dale Jr. furthers that narrative, which Dale Jr. remembers as "the best conversation he and his dad ever had."Ultimately, Ty Norris' time at DEI came to a close, and years later he found himself at the center of one of the most infamous events in NASCAR history - Spingate. He gives us his perspective on the situation surrounding Michael Waltrip Racing at Richmond in 2013 and how he came to terms with the situation following the backlash from NASCAR, the media, and the fans. At the time of recording, Ty had played an integral part in the origins and evolution of Trackhouse Racing, though in recent news, he is now the Chief Business Officer at Kaulig Racing.Ty's interview is one of the rawest, eye-opening conversations that we will rewatch any time we get the chance to. We hope you enjoy it!
