FIRM FOUNDATIONSong by Cody CarnesReleased December 2021Written during a “shaky season” - (covid, political unrest, riots, etc.)Based on what Jesus teaches us in: Matthew 7:24-27Jesus tells this parable at the end of the sermon on the mount Sermon that teaches people how to live. Matthew 7:24-27 (NIV) “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”Sand Castle - crumbling from below when the water hitsA solid foundation, like a rock, stays put and everything built upon it stays strongBuild your house on GOD GOD IS OUR FOUNDATION “Christ is my firm foundation” ~ “The Rock on which I stand” ~ “My house is built on you” “I'm standing strong on you” ~ “I've built my life on Jesus” ~ “I'm safe with You”Isaiah 26:4 (ESV) Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.Psalm 62:6 (ESV) He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken.Psalm 18:2 (ESV) The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my strongholdDon't know what we've put our faith in until we weather a stormWe can see how solid our foundation is when we go through a storm2020 revealed that for a lot of people THERE WILL BE STORMS “When everything around me is shaking” ~ “Joy in chaos” ~ “Rain came, wind blew”John 16:33 (NIV) “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”Storms are promised Caused by: the enemy - since the Garden of EdenOthers - impacted by their selfish motivationsOurselves - Not doing what God tells us - Doing the oppositeJesus experienced storms - metaphorically and literallyIn the boat with the disciples - sleeping during the storm - Matthew 8:24-27 “Suddenly a furious storm came up… waves swept over the boat. Save us! We're gonna drown! You of little faith. Why are you afraid?” Walking on water to meet his disciples - Matthew 14:22-33 but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. Calls Peter out of the boat - when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. Walked through the storm on water - a firm foundation because of his faithDon't doubt the one who you are putting your faith in. James 1:2-3 (NIV) Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. This doesn't make sense until you go through something and experience the joy of drawing closer to God. James 1:6 (NIV) But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. Don't look at the storm or your circumstances. As I have drawn nearer to God, he has drawn nearer to me.As I seek him, he is there. You need to seek him. Faith without works is dead. Believe through your actions. Not just your words. He has shown up in the storms of my life. 1 John 5:4 ESV For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. Put away from you crooked speech, and put devious talk far from you. Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you. Message Notes: 1 I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. 2 I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High. 3 When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish before your presence. 4 For you have maintained my just cause; you have sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment. 5 You have rebuked the nations; you have made the wicked perish; you have blotted out their name forever and ever. 6 The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins; their cities you rooted out; the very memory of them has perished. 7 But the Lord sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice, 8 and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness.9 The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. 10 And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you. — Psalm 9v1-10 (ESV) And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.– Psalm 9v10 (ESV) Trust: firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. — Psalm 20v7 (ESV) what trusting Jesus looks like: 1. Letting go of control For you have maintained my just cause; you have sat on the throne, giving righteous judgment. — Psalm 9v4 (ESV) If you worry too much about what might be, and wonder too long about what might have been, you will ignore and completely miss what is. — Marc Chernoff 2. Not returning evil for evil 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” - Romans 12v16-19 (ESV) 3. Loving your enemies 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. — Matthew 5v43-45 (ESV) Learn to sit with Judas and you'll learn to love like Jesus. The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins; their cities you rooted out; the very memory of them has perished. — Psalm 9v6 (ESV) 4. Praying for your persecutors 7 But the Lord sits enthroned forever; he has established his throne for justice, 8 and he judges the world with righteousness; he judges the peoples with uprightness. — Psalm 9v7-8 (ESV) There will come a time, when the confession of the living God will not only cause hatred against us but will result in ostracism from society. The world cannot live side-by-side with us because what we say and do, whether we intend it to or not, is perceived by the world as condemnation on them. — Dietrich Bonhoeffer 5. Living for later 1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. — Psalm 90v1-2 (ESV) 1 Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God. — 1 Peter 4v1-2 (ESV)

Episode Summary: Kristine Brown and I talk about learning to trust God, especially in our decisions. Making decisions is a process, and it can seem overwhelming at times. Kristine shares what she learned in order to move from decision fatigue to trusting God with her decisions. Quotables from the episode: So often we trust God with the big things in life, when it's the little things that seem so hard to trust Him with. When my pastor said, “You know God's got this, right?” I realized I wasn't so sure I did. That's when I realized something needed to change. I wanted to go from saying I trusted God to actively living it out in my life. In order to fully trust God, we have to trade our “what ifs?” for “living as if!” I came to the place where I prayed, “Lord, show me what you want me to learn through the hard stuff.” We struggle to trust God because we want the assurance that everything will be okay. We must make our decisions in good faith to trust that the Holy Spirit is guiding us. The best thing we can do as we learn to trust God more with our decisions is to make a daily commitment to release control to God. Scripture References: Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Psalm 73:24 ESV “You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory.” Hebrews 10:23 ESV “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.” Recommended Resources: Cinched: Living with Unwavering Trust in an Unfailing God and the companion workbook by Kristine Brown Trusting God Through Cancer 1 Trusting God Through Cancer 2 Revive & Thrive Women's Conference Subdue Stress and Anxiety: Fifteen Experts Offer Comprehensive Tools in Ten Minutes a Day. Episode Summary: Missy Eversole and I talk about how we can be transformed and not conformed to the world. What does conformity to the world mean? How can we avoid being conformed to the world? If you're a people pleaser, you won't want to miss her story. Quotables from the episode: The older I get, the more I realize that all I really need is Jesus. I don't need to be “Pinterest perfect.” I just need Jesus. No matter how spiritually dry you are, Jesus is waiting for you with open arms, ready to quench that thirst with the Living Water that He provides. It's not sustainable to think we can live in a Pinterest-perfect life. Conforming means we are blending in with the world when we are called to be salt and light. When we begin the transformation process, we see small results right away. If you have time to scroll on social media, we have time to read the Bible. Scripture References: Romans 12:2 ESV “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your understanding. Paul's letter to the Colossians boldly declares how we should see, feel, and think about Jesus. Jesus is supreme over all! Existence itself was created by Him and for Him. Who He is and what He has done liberates us to live every day by His power and in His presence. Part ten of this series features a sermon from Pastor Jon Zondervan talking about how our life is not our own, but the Lords. Focus Scripture // Colossians 3:1-11 (ESV) “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. 5 Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. 11 Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all, and in all.” Sermon Highlights Do you see yourself the way that God sees you? Your life is not your own. You're hidden in God. He is master, owner, and ruler of our life. Too many Christians treat Jesus like a life-coach instead of Lord. We're not fighting against unbelievers, we're fighting for unbelievers. Make Jesus LORD over every arena of your life. Who do you think you are? Galatians 2:20 (ESV) “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Who is in control of your life? Proverbs 3:5-7 (ESV) “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil.” What are you willing to take off? Sexual Immorality (Colossians 3:5) Covetousness (Luke 12:13-15) Evil Speech (Colossians 3:8-9)
You will not always see how a thing will end, but God calls you to take the first step anyway. God is faithful to fulfill every promise declared in His word and to your heart. I pray that you trust Him and obey.

Proverbs 3:5 & 6 (AMP) - Trust in and rely confidently on the LORD with all your heart and do not rely on your own insight or understanding. In all your ways know and acknowledge and recognize Him, and He will make your paths straight (removing obstacles that block your way). Proverbs 3:5 & 6 (ESV) - Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. I all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Proverbs 3:5 & 6 (NIV) - Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. The command to acknowlege Him means to observe Him and get to know Him in the process of living. Trusting Him is actually depending on Him. Take an honest look at your life, find a couple of areas in which you'd like to think you are really trusting God...Now, do this: Say, "I am trusting the Lord with..." (fill in whatever it is you are trusting Him for). Can you take out "trusting" and insert "depending on" with total ease? Can you say, "I am depending on the Lord regarding..." as easily as you could say you are trusting Him? Trusting God means leaning solely on Him without a plan B. To acknowledge Him means to observe Him - to get to know Him right in the midst of this daily life we're all living. How good are you at observing God? Do you watch how He does what He does? Or do you primarily want to see the positive end result of what He does? If a key part of having our paths made straight and our way smoothed out ahead of us is a result of observing the Lord, getting to know Him better & better, as in knowing Him so well that we can see His ways occurring around me even when we cannot seem to find Him in a situation, then we need to be about observing Him! God puts a high premium on us knowing Him well. That is truly amazing! He promises that He will make your paths straight and smooth - God will literally and figuratively move obstacles out of the way in the physical realm and the spiritual realm. Will really does mean will...when He says He will do something, don't doubt Him! Your role is to trust and rely on Him - to observe Him - really get to know Him - and stop relying on your own insight and understanding.

What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” -- (Romans 4:1-3 ESV) Trust is a major issue in our time. All you need to do is listen to any coverage of this year's elections to see it. Who do you trust? Are they telling the truth? Do I trust them enough to put my vote of confidence behind them? Our trust and faith however extends beyond our politics. They are vital in our spiritual life as well. This week we take a look at the third Sola - Sola Fide or Faith Alone. This theological maxim continues to define the gospel for us. This week we will open up Romans 4 to look at this truth. I want to encourage you to take a few minutes to slowly read through the passage. If you have more time, go back to Genesis 15 and explore the reference that Paul is making to Abraham. How did he come into a right relationship with God? This is going to be a vital week to understand where we place our trust for ultimate realities. Plan to be with us. And invite someone to come along!
