Just this week. the two Kens both encountered church-related, disconcerting setbacks.  Kemp learned via an official, public email blast that the lead and founding pastor of the church that gave birth to the Center for Racial Reconciliation has been put on immediate leave of absence for "inappropriate texting." Just after recording this conversation, Fong uncovered some unsettling news from a chance encounter in the grocery store with a former parishioner. From the pulpit of a nearby sister church on Sunday morning, the senior pastor openly charged by name Fong and three other pastors (one deceased) by name as "false teachers" and "wolves in sheep's clothing." In this episode, the two Kens unpack some of the many challenges of "mega-church" and the prevalence of vulnerable, celebrity pastors. Fong recalls his doctoral dissertation in which he contributed to the literature of the church growth movement. He disavowed much of that research when he published his 1999 book, Pursuing the Pearl. Mega-churches mimic the "Big Box" phenomena, they've become akin to Walmart, Target, and Costco. Some years before he retired, Fong intentionally and willingly opened his church doors and now his podcast to the LGBT+ community. It signaled a change of heart and mind. The church lost members because of that decision but gained a whole lot more. Kemp accepted Fong's challenge to follow suit on this podcast. The two podcasters agree - if we are committed to the "ministry of reconciliation" to marginalized people groups - that should include them all. Kemp and Fong suggest that real church is something more. Much more. Both Kens release this conversation on each of their podcasts. In my Christian tradition, we were taught that we are all created in the imago Dei, the image of God. According to our scriptures, that idea entered human consciousness from the very beginning, when God played the role of Creator. He (our English translation of the Bible uses the male pronoun) created ex nihilo, out of nothing. If we are made in that image, then we were made to create, too.Ken Kemp and Ken Fong have journeyed through the unwelcome loss of Sharon (Snoopy) Fong, culminating in a beautiful memorial service this month. As Kemp contemplated the Two Kens conversations leading up to the memorial, he thought about the creative energy that sustained his friend Ken Fong. It was a white-knuckle roller coaster ride up and down, high and low - from using every means at their disposal to kill the cancer and preserve Snoopy's life; to bargaining, to grieving, to hoping, to despairing, and finally to letting go. Kemp shares his deep gratitude for what he learned along with the Fongs this summer. Kemp shares that Ken Fong's creativity has carried him through as he passed the "valley of the shadow" along with his beloved life-long partner, Snoopy. Creativity has high therapeutic value in getting us through grief, hardship and loss. In this episode of the Two Kens, Kemp and Fong recount the planning and execution of a truly remarkable memorial service bringing to light an extraordinary life well lived through music, story, photographs, and homily. If you were able to attend the service in person or online, you will want to hear this back story of thoughtful preparation from the church where Fong had been lead pastor for some four decades and on to the waters of the Pacific Ocean between the two Hawaiian islands where Snoopy's "cremains" were joined as one to the wind and sea.Ken Fong's Facebook Page | Sharon's Life Story |  Ken's Hawaiian FarewellSupport the show

After a courageous, tireless battle, Sharon "Snoopy" Fong left us on July 1, 2023. This Two Kens episode is the twenty-seventh time Ken Fong and Ken Kemp have come together for a podcast conversation - this time, it's a somber, solemn occasion.  It's a moment of reflection - filled with both grief and gratitude. Today's title comes from C.S. Lewis, the British literary critic, and scholar who was also known as an Anglican theologian. His writings have influenced many generations of faith seekers, including ours. Professor Lewis was known as a committed bachelor, but he married later in life. When Joy Grisham began corresponding with the stuffy Oxford don, he was smitten - "surprised by joy (Joy)" as he put it. As their romance blossomed, Joy Grisham was unexpectedly diagnosed with a cancer that took her life, all too soon. Lewis' shared his written reflections. His honesty and candor stunned many of his Christian readers because he openly expressed tidal waves of doubt, even anger that his "good" God could possibly have allowed this tragic, premature end to his beautiful awakening to married love. He wrote "A Grief Observed," which it was. Ken Fong lines up with C.S. Lewis in his willingness to share the journey openly - a journey filled with laughter and tears. The two Kens come together for a personal reflection on life and love - and the extraordinary woman who came into Ken Fong's life more than forty years ago: Sharon Snoopy Fong. Dr. Ken Fong, senior pastor at Evergreen Baptist Church in Rosemead, California and a program director at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena.  “You're scrutinized and criticized from top to bottom, stem to stern. You work for an invisible, perfect Boss, and you're supposed to lead a ragtag gaggle of volunteers towards God's coming future. It's like herding cats, but harder.” Our guests today have served in a variety of ministerial roles, not the least of which is their most recent church-planting journey, during their more than two decades of ministry. Chad & Jennifer Stafford have not only survived the process but are here to share their own personal victories and defeats with us as they continue to grow and cultivate disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Upon graduating from Central Bible College (Springfield, MO), Chad & Jennifer Stafford have been in full-time ministry for over 20 years having served in almost every area of church work.Chad grew up in Daphne, Alabama and played football and baseball at Daphne High School. He was called as the senior pastor of Evergreen Baptist Church in 1977. At that time, only 35 worshipers came on Sundays — mostly elderly, and mostly Japanese-Americans, and only one family with young children. Slowly, though, some young Chinese-Americans began trickling in, attracted by the church’s English services. “We knew then our calling was beyond Japanese-Americans,” said Cory Ishida, whose grandparents were Japanese immigrants. In 1988, the church moved six miles to suburban Rosemead. Under Cory Ishida’s leadership, the church decided to reach out to Asian-Americans of all ethnicities in their area. Soon, an equal number of Japanese-Americans and Chinese-Americans make up the bulk of worshipers, joined by Koreans, Filipinos, and Southeast Asians. Their numbers swelled to around 1,200.In 1997, Cory Ishida planted Evergreen Baptist Church of San Gabriel Valley, where he currently pastors. He is a veteran pastor, committed to prayer, pastoral care, mentoring, the preaching of Scripture, and local mission.
