On the Daily Detroit Podcast today: - Flex N Gate opens on the east side of Detroit, hiring 50% Detroit residents into jobs. Looking for a job yourself? Here's a link to job training at Detroit At Work. - We hit the streets to talk to folks on both sides at a strike at one of Detroit's iconic hotels, the Westin Book Cadillac, owned by Marriott. At issue? Wages, of course. But also the idea that workers shouldn't have to work two jobs to afford to live in the city. - One of the Detroit area’s most infamous motels is being shopped as a redevelopment opportunity. The Motorama Motel on Eight Mile Road at Woodward in Ferndale is for sale, and we have the purchase price. - Southfield has joined the ranks of Detroit-area cities to celebrate the holiday instead as Indigenous Peoples Day. - Detroit’s Palmer Park is getting some badly needed new tennis courts. Crews recently demolished the old courts, which sit along Woodward Avenue between McNichols and Seven Mile Roads and have hosted a popular youth Tennis Academy for the past five years. - And Nuri Gocay from IT in the D joins us to talk about tech and the recent security breach from a big tech company. Thanks to our episode sponsors: Milo Digital and Falling Down Beer Company. This episode of the Daily Detroit podcast was recorded on Monday, October 8. Welcome back to the work week! This is your Daily Detroit podcast for September 10, 2018. Here are your stories: - It might be the end of an era in Detroit. One of the legendary dueling coneys - Lafayette - will now let you pay for coneys with credit cards. - Miss Michigan, Emily Sioma, used the Miss America Beauty Pageant over the weekend to make a political statement on Michigan water. - We recently told you about how Ford scrapped its plans to import the Focus Active to the U.S. from China due to the steep cost tied to President Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports. On Sunday, President Trump apparently caught wind of that announcement from a CNBC report and took to Twitter, suggesting “This car can now be BUILT IN THE U.S.A.” where the company would pay no tariffs. - There’s some news about one of the Detroit area’s largest remaining abandoned shopping malls, Summit Place. - A key deadline in the granting of licenses to medical marijuana facilities looks set to be extended, meaning some facilities will be able to keep operating during the licensing process. - There’s a big mural nearing completion in Hamtramck that pays tribute to Detroit City FC and its passionate fan base. - The city of Detroit has a new strategic transportation plan that they unveiled Friday. The plan focuses on improvements to Detroit’s transportation system. It’s not just updates to the bus system, which is getting 50 new bus shelters. The plan looks at projects that would slow down cars in neighborhoods, resurface more than 300 miles of roads, implement smart technology in signals…. and of course, lower the highest-in-the-nation car insurance rates in the city. - A taster of beer news for you. Falling Down Beer Company (also, an occasional sponsor of Daily Detroit) is opening their Detroit location in the Detroit Shipping Company tomorrow.. That’s Tuesday.

Episode 100: the night of bad puns, occupancy code violations, Bob being rendered speechless, mayhem with puppets and so, so much more.  Had a really great night for episode 100 of our live weekly podcast, and with a room full of lively guests, we definitely didn't have a lack of topics, voices, opinions or laughter for the occasion... We were joined by our guests Mark Larson from Falling Down Beer Company, David Lingholm and Garlin Gilchrest II from the city of Detroit, Karen Hubbard from The Corner with K-Hubb Show...and also from our old studio and now her own network, Billy from Social Coop Media, our buddy Jeff Haase, Jer and Patrick from Daily Detroit, and a few other stragglers who wandered in to join us. As always, our first segment was a roll through the events, news and information that caught our attention over the past week.  From the shrine to the dead raccoon on a sidewalk in Toronto to the mayhem taking out the New York Stock Exchange, United Airlines, missile batteries in Germany and a bunch of other things this week, we had a lot to talk about.  The continuing saga and spiral of Bill Cosby.  The idiot couple who thought having sex in public on a beach at 2:30 in the afternoon was a great idea.  Two separate incidents of people with selfie sticks getting struck by lightning.  All kinds of good stuff. For our second segment, we dove in with David Lingholm and Garlin Gilchrest II from the city of Detroit to talk about all of the cool stuff going on downtown.  From getting activity back in to the former shopping districts and less active neighborhoods to how an app has been helping them track service requests on potholes, manhole covers, broken lights, etc., to improve quality of life for the city's residents, it was a pretty interesting chat.  They both have great ambitions for what Detroit can be, and it's great that they're both on the inside working to make it happen. Mark from Falling Down Beer Company was front and center for our third segment.  From their new location opening up in Oxford later this year to an expansion from 8 to 20 taps at their original Warren location, they've got a TON going on.  Not that we're surprised, since this has been one of our favorite places and brands since they first came onto the scene, and we're sure they're going to do great things as they expand not only into new locations, but also into the wine and spirits lines of creation as well. Oh, and Jeff Haase had way too much fun with our Ruppits (they're puppets, but cooler) during this segment.  We barely kept ourselves from breaking out laughing. In our fourth and final segment, we hopped in with Karen Hubbard, our original Captain Soundboard and she of the Monday Night Meat Sticks quote from our intro.  She's been having almost as much fun as we have lately, with building out a new network, getting her own show fired back up after a hiatus, recently becoming single again and trying out the dating world...actually, come to think of it, she might actually have more going on than we do these days.  We also touched base with Billy Strawter of Social Coop Media, who always has something new and fun going on with his business as they're moving to a new space and looking to hire someone...like they always are these days. All that and more in episode 100, so give it a listen and laugh along with us. Episode 95...and on our fifth episode from the new studio, we had a pretty packed room with guests covering all sorts of topics.  Open data in the city of Detroit and an upcoming hackathon to find better ways to use it.  Updates from our friends at Detroit Beer Press about their latest issue.  A check in nearly two years later with Batch Brewing Company on how things are going downtown.  A look at the state of the Detroit tech scene from the eyes of someone still in school and breaking into the industry. After our 1995 themed intro came to a close, our opening segment kicked off with a recap of our last event and information about our upcoming events, the depressing information that both The Goonies and Ferris Bueller's Day Off are now both thirty years old, the hilarious (to us) story about a member of ISIS posting a selfie that led to an airstrike less than 24 hours later, a very concerning tale about how the Red Cross spent over $500 million in Haiti after the terrible earthquakes there...and yet somehow managed to only build six houses, Gamestop's purchase of ThinkGeek's parent company, our lovely new kegerator stocked with the Scurvy Dan Blood Orange IPA from Falling Down Beer Company and more. In our second segment, we dove in with our guests David Lingholm, the Director of Digital Media and Community Engagement for the City of Detroit, and Erin Sommerville, Media Relations Specialist for Automation Alley.  There's a hackathon coming up this weekend, #Hack4Detroit, that's looking to find some better uses for the massive amounts of data that the city has accumulated over the years, and there's some decent prize money for those who can help.  Designers, coders, and even just folks with ideas are welcome...but the signup cutoff is Wednesday, so hurry: http://www.automationalley.com/Events/Calendar/Event-Detail.aspx?uniqueid=16840 In segment three, we checked in with our friends Courtney Ochab, Ian Burk and Tony Barchok from Detroit Beer Press and Stephen Roginson of Batch Brewing Company.  Batch Brewing was on waaaaaaaaay back in episode 10 of our show when they were a finalist (and eventual winner!) of the Hatch Detroit competition in 2013, and they've come a long way since then.  Not only are they open, but they're in full swing with production of a number of great beers, have a solid kitchen, and have a monthly "feel good tap" where a portion of the proceeds go to a local organization.  Can't beat that. Detroit Beer Press isn't doing to shabby either, with their latest issue in breweries, distilleries and locations throughout the area...which hypothetically might include another IT in the D style rant.  Updates about their Howler Club Membership program and more await your ears. In our fourth and final segment (no, still no infamous fifth segments in the new studio as of yet), we talked with Kevin Hill, a local guy still in college at RIT, and working his way into the Detroit tech scene.  We met Kevin at our Hopcat event back in May, and absolutely had to have him join us in-studio to continue that conversation on air.  He's got some great perspectives on how things look from his point of view - what he sees going well, going wrong, what works, what doesn't, and just a great take on things in general. And that brought us to a close.  Tune in next week as we're joined by Right Brain Networks to talk about DevOps among other topics, Make Moore Media to talk film and production, and Yum Village to talk about their group's organization and event. Our third episode from the new studio is in the rear view mirror, and it marked the return of two very important things: beer from Falling Down Beer Company and the cheesy hotel front desk bell, both of which we've missed terribly. Joined by our guests from Social Coop Media, Long Neck Strangler and Mess Bucket Comics, we covered a whole gamut of topics for your listening pleasure... We originally had a couple of other guests scheduled for tonight's broadcast, but whacky mayhem ensued and so we drafted some folks into hanging out with us to keep the conversation flowing. A few hacks highlighted the early conversation - Starbucks has a problem with their gift cards, Adult Friend Finder got themselves breached and millions of rather sensitive and potentially embarrassing user details are out in the wild and already being used to blackmail people, some rather unpleasant items from the worlds of Twitter and Google Maps when it comes to overt racism, the return of Clearly Canadian, a few more items that make us feel all too old as Empire Strikes Back turns 35 and Real Genius turns 30, and a really miserable chain of events at a 16th birthday party.  All that and more got covered during our first segment. In segment two, we dove in with Billy Strawter of Social Coop Media.  In his first appearance at the new studio, we chatted through cringe-worthy social media fails, a new client that they've recently landed, some basics for a company or an individual looking to maximize their social media capabilities and more.  It's always a great chat when we have Billy in, and this time was no exception.  Check them out at http://socialcoopmedia.com/ For our third segment, we dove in with Kevin from Long Neck Strangler and Dom from Mess Bucket Comics to talk about all sorts of topics - Kevin's take on the local music scene, some great tours he's been a part of, some cautionary tales he's witnessed along the way, and some more catching up with Dom from Motor City Comic Con, running a comic business, and how social media plays and interacts with their various endeavors and operations. As always, our final segment recapped some of our earlier topics, covered a few things that we missed in the opening segment, and wrapped things up with our guests for the night. Duran Duran.  The NeverEnding Story.  Transformers. 1984 was a good year, and so it's of little surprise that episode 84 of our weekly live broadcast was a blast. With our guests from Falling Down Beer Company, RhinoCoders and Startup Weekend Pontiac in-studio with us, we had a wide variety of topics to handle...to the point where it even took us into a fifth segment to get through it all... We kicked off this episode with another retrospective intro, and then dove into our usual round of guest introductions, followed by the stories that have caught our eye this past week. Oh and hey, get a free audio book by hitting http://www.Audible.com/ITintheD The end of Internet Explorer.  Sending money via Facebook Messenger.  The Nain Rouge events downtown over the weekend.  Slow Roll wanting people to buy memberships.  The amazing number of apps in the Apple store that haven't had a single download.  Our new favorite gag gift to send to people. After a break, we dove in with Matt and Jon from RhinoCoders.  RhinoCoders immerses the young people of Metropolitan Detroit into the world of interactive architecture by providing them with a digital foundation from which to grow, through a series of fun and interactive tracks taught by web developers from SapientNitro Detroit. Students discover the latest cutting-edge technologies, learn how to code efficiently, develop stunning websites and create engaging apps.  Students build a clean, professional-looking website based off their favorite animal, utilizing the latest web standards and best practices in the HTML, CSS, JavaScript coding languages.  Their classes are only three weeks long, and they've got another round starting soon.  Check them out at http://www.rhinocoders.com/ or on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/rhinocoders Another flashback of some tunes from 1984 later, and segment three was all about Startup Weekend: Pontiac.  We chatted with the organizers, Crystal and Amos, about their event this weekend.  Over the span of 54 hours, you'll get immersed in what it takes to get to a minimum viable product, and you can come at it from just about any angle you want.  Are you a business person with an idea...but no tech skills or design capabilities?  They need you.  Can you sling code, and want to help get something off the ground?  They need you.  Got some design skills that can help make something look slick and clean? They need you.  Get on over to check them out at https://www.facebook.com/startupweekendpontiac and dive in! For segment four, we chatted with one of our favorite people...and not just because we get beer from him...Mark from Falling Down Beer Company.  Their second anniversary event is this weekend, and you should absolutely plan on attending.  From 9am to 11am, they've got a reservations-only brunch going on that, knowing their kitchen, is going to knock your socks off.  Starting at 11am, the doors open to the public, and they'll have 14 taps running with a wide variety of brews available, food, entertainment, they'll be raffling off gift cards, growler fills, and a bunch of other stuff.  Plan on being there.  Check them out at https://www.facebook.com/fallingdownbeer And as mentioned up in the intro, we had to keep things rolling into a fifth segment because we had so much to cover.  We hadn't even talked about our Pink Slip Party last week at The Majestic, or that we're doubling down on events starting in April with an event on Wednesday, April 1st over at Firebird Tavern downtown. So listen to this week's episode, and we'll see you next week. Yeah, it was one of those nights... We kicked off with the stories about the Grumpy Cat owner pulling down $100 million, updates and information about our charity fundraiser at Falling Down Beer Company, and other items that had caught our eye throughout the week. Then the latest from Falling Down Beer Company, the hosts for our event on Thursday night where the charity fundraiser was taking place.  Our next segment with Daily Detroit and Social Media Coop Detroit got a little off the tracks as we started swapping stories from the "good old days" of the early internet boom.  We chatted with Kelley Jean about her music and upcoming appearances as a featured dancer, and then we wrapped up with the always infamous segment five where we tried to double back on some earlier topics with our guests, but that got interrupted by a message that triggered mockery and laughter. IT in the D, Episode 63. We've been looking forward to this episode for a while now. We were joined in-studio by Mike from Motor City Drone Co...yes, a company right here in the area that makes drones, one of our favorite topics.  Also joining us were Matt and Jon from RhinoCoders, a great program focused on getting children more involved and engaged with technology in the best way possible - by diving in and getting hands-on with it... Just like always, our first segment was all about some of the news and events that caught our eye this past week.  Of course, we had to kick off by sending a happy birthday shout out to William Zabka, because, well, we still laugh and talk about the conversations we had with him at Motor City Comic Con. We talked about our event last week at Blackfinn, our upcoming event with Social Media Club Detroit, the November casual networking social at Stray Cat Lounge, the December event at Falling Down Beer Company, and the other events you can find out at http://www.itinthed.com/meet/.  We got into the recent news that HBO and CBS are launching their own online streaming services, which seems like it's leading to the dream of unbundled content...but there's an inevitable downside.  The chaos going on in a local school with teens, sexting, and pending felony charges.  And so, so many more rantworthy topics... For segment two, we dove in with Mike from Motor City Drone Co.  And you know how we love to talk about drones.  It was really cool having someone in-studio with us who's very close to the topic and paying attention to things like pending legislation, what the market for drones is, practical applications of it for home and corporate buyers, and all sorts of other topics we've been dying to deep dive on.  They're a great local company with drones ranging from a few hundred dollars all the way out to something that could, you know, hypothetically speaking, move a body if you wanted to.  Not that Motor City Drone Co condones that usage.  Or encourages it.  But, you know, you could.  Find out more about them and go shopping at http://motorcitydroneco.com/ Segment three was all about RhinoCoders.  They're a group of people in the information technology industry that are trying to get kids more interested in careers in IT as they grow up.  They do that by getting them in a hands-on environment teaching them HTML, CSS and Javascript in a series of classes.  The computers are there.  A thumb drive helps the kids bring their work home.  If they miss a class, no big deal, there's a whole online syllabus of the course and work to keep them caught up.  It's a pretty damned cool initiative, and it was great talking with Matt and Jon last night.  Go learn more about RhinoCoders and get your kids rolling with classes starting after the holidays at http://www.rhinocoders.com/ And then, as always, segment four was all about doubling back on points we might have missed from our earlier conversations, a couple more news items that we didn't get to in the first segment and the usual wrap up stuff. And hey, one more time for good measure - hope you had a great birthday man! We're joined by Mark Larson from Falling Down Beer Company, along with Courtney Ochab and Ian Burk from Detroit Beer Press. Great conversations...sure, mostly about beer, but also about a whole variety of topics as well... It was about eight million degrees in the studio tonight for some reason...and lucky for you, our group shot for the night was blurrier than all hell and so you're spared the pain of looking at our hot sweaty mess selves. You're welcome. From tales of midnight showings of Star Wars movies to various types of beer, this show was exactly what we told both you and ourselves that it would be - nothing serious, just hanging out and having a great series of chats. The highlights and key takeaways from tonight's show: - Falling Down Beer Company brews some fairly strong beer. - They're having an awesome event on Father's Day.  Six beers.  Five dishes.  A commemorative goblet.  And it's only $35. - No seriously, it's only $35.  They're even doing it twice - once at noon, once at 4pm. - Tickets are available here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/fathers-day-beer-food-paring-tickets-11828614705 - In the meantime, hey, walk in and tell Mark you heard him on the IT in the D show.  Odds are better than good he'll do something nice for you. - Oh, and Bob has never seen the Godfather.  Either 1 or 2.  That might have been a recurring theme throughout the night. - He's also not very fond of human interaction, as his rant during...ah, you know what?  It's in here.  Listen. Thanks again for listening, and thank you to our guests for joining us. Episode 21 of the IT in the D show was exactly what we needed.  We were joined in studio by long-time friend of the program Jeff Haase in-studio. That of course led to a little hardcore geeking, some laughter, a dose of witty banter, a little mocking, some history of the group, a rant or two...you know, "Us 101"... In our first segment, we talk through the basics of our upcoming Support The Troops event on December 12th, we chat about our event last week at Falling Down Beer Company, and we dive into a bit of the history of ITintheD.com as well as some basics of dealing with us.  Including the best and easiest way to piss us off.  After that, we start diving into news and events that have caught our eye including fake Microsoft tech support phone calls that are really hackers, a problem with Yahoo that we're all surprised isn't getting more press, and a few others. In our second segment, we get right back into the Yahoo issue, as well as some freaky social engineering done via LinkedIn that just floored us all, dealing with the after-effects of your system getting compromised, a nasty scam that some tellers are running at grocery and departments stores around the country, some inevitable discussion of Black Friday and more importantly the psychology behind it, a really cool puzzle / cryptography / code breaking thing that's out there in the wild that's driving a lot of people nuts and more. In our third segment, we hop right back into the Cicada 3301 topic and why cryptography and code breaking are so damned fascinating, why Bob is stymied by the concept of airplanes being able to fly, Bitcoin, the Darknet and so much more geek-ness than we've gotten into in a long time. To wrap things up in our final segment, Bob and I get into a debate about the terms "saved" versus "started"...and of course it all revolved around beer, cell phones on airplanes, creatures of habit who fear change, and the impending possibility that phone carriers can start dropping landlines. IT in the D, Episode 16.  Original air date 10/21/2013. Our guests include Mark Larson, one of the owners of Falling Down Beer Company, Mark Shaftner, COO of Marketplace Homes, and Derek Strate, owner of Absotech LLC. A great show, all around.  Fantastic conversations, awesome topics, and a solid flow between all of the guests. In tonight's show... In our first segment, we handle introductions, and do our usual wander through some of the more interesting stories that have caught our eye.  From Google+ using your face in ads to stores tracking your movements through your cell phone's wifi card, our recent event at Blackfinn and Network Michigan's event on Thursday night, helicopter drones that use your phone's GPS to deliver books and food to you bringing us one step closer to Terminator's Judgment Day and the latest fun with Experian having sold 500,000 full details to an identity theft website and oh so much more. In our second segment, we get right to the fun stuff.  Mark Larson of Falling Down Beer Company.  Those of you who have been around for a while will remember that we had our February casual networking social event there before they were even really open to the public.  Well, they've been cranking on their remodeling work and we're going back for our November event on the 21st.  Mark also brought along some of the great beer that they've got on tap at Falling Down...but unfortunately we still haven't managed to get those reuben eggrolls in-studio with us.  Guess we'll just have to stop by and grab some between now and the 21st. In our third segment, we dive in to all of the cool things that Marketplace Homes is doing, and we're not just talking about the "hey, we'll lease your existing home" program that they have going on.  Mark Shaftner, COO of Marketplace Homes is in-studio to tell us about some of the ways that Marketplace Homes is using technology to revolutionize the home shopping and home buying experience, and things they're doing to make the process smoother, easier, and even cheaper. In our fourth and final segment, we wrap things up with Derek Strate telling us about Absotech.  Derek's a long-time member of our networking group, and one of the folks who has moved on from working for others to starting his own company and now hiring others through our events.  Truly a great success story, and Derek's doing a lot of good things for his clients around the metro Detroit area.
