There are those listed above...And then there is my guest for this episode today, courtesy to the serendipity proximate to Arne…Peter, whose full name will remain redacted - is the head of the isolation ward at Kumla prison, which is the largest maximum security prison in Sweden. We recorded this about 6 months ago, so I am very late to publish, but I hope you'll agree that the contents are evergreen. Not tied down to any particular time and news, and therefore as useful now as it would have been then as it will be in 5 years time. Pete and I sat down together to record this one in Stockholm last late Autumn, it's as many ins and outs of the prison system that I could think to ask Peter. This is an exhaustive list, but it includes inmate demographics, the impact of overpopulation, the complexities of rehabilitation, the psychological effects of prison on both inmates and staff. the crucial differences between the Swedish prison system other countries, and how it's portrayed in the media, particularly regarding sentencing and the rehabilitation processes. the challenges of institutionalisation, the dynamics of inmate behaviour. Leadership and de-escalation techniques in managing inmate interactions, as well as the influence of gangs and ethnic divides within the prison system. Informal power dynamics among inmates, the prevalence of violence, self-harm, and the challenges faced by prison officers. The changing attitudes of younger inmates towards authority, the psychological impact of incarceration, and the ongoing issues of contraband and drug addiction. The discussion also touches on the responsibility of prison staff to understand and support inmates, the metrics used to evaluate prison conditions, and the societal perceptions of crime and punishment. In between all that there is as well Peter's good humour and the natural tangents much of that may draw you down…00:00 - Who Is Peter & Intro03:02 Demographics and Overpopulation in Kumla Prison05:51 Crime Types and Inmate Behaviour09:00 Rehabilitation and Sentencing in Sweden11:59 Isolation Units and Mental Health14:48 Challenges of Overpopulation and Violence18:05 Administrative Costs and Efficiency20:56 Psychological Impact of Isolation23:53 Interactions with Inmates27:04 Handling Manipulation and Trust30:00 Sympathy for Inmates and Their Stories32:48 Mental Health and Rehabilitation Challenges35:56 Conclusion and Reflections on the Prison System45:09 The Nature of Work in Prison51:49 Rehabilitation vs. Punishment in Nordic Prisons56:08 Institutionalization and Its Effects01:01:22 De-escalation Techniques in High-Stress Environments01:08:15 Leadership in Correctional Facilities01:16:55 Gang Dynamics in Swedish Prisons01:26:13 Understanding Power Dynamics in Prisons01:29:07 The Reality of Violence in Prisons01:31:34 Addressing Self-Harm and Mental Health Issues01:34:19 The Challenge of Knowing Inmates01:36:34 Evaluating Prison Metrics and Crime Hierarchies01:38:52 Religious Practices and Beliefs in Prisons01:41:01 Changing Dyn

Join biologist and psychic phenomena researcher Rupert Sheldrake as he analyses the history of pilgrimage, going all the way from its ancient roots in religious ceremony to its modern incarnation of tourism. Rupert Sheldrake is an English scientist whose research into parapsychology and evolution led to the theory of morphic resonance, expounded in the book 'A New Science of Life'. The theory posits that "memory is inherent in nature" which makes it possible for "telepathy-type interconnections between organisms." Other topics he has written and spoken on include precognition, the relationships between spirituality and science and the psychic staring effect. This is Freud's first extended treatment of religion as such, with a particular emphasis on ritual, and, in classic Freudian style, sees him provocatively linking individual symptoms with broader cultural formations. But what does Freud mean by “religion” anyway, in relation to his Jewish heritage on the one hand and his overwhelmingly Catholic Austrian milieu on the other? What can looking at the nuances of Freud's German reveal about his understanding of what we would today call obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)? What are we to make of his account of individual “obsessional neuroses” as a kind of “private suffering” versus the collective work done by shared public rituals, and how does that bear on Freud's ideas about the origins of our beliefs and, per Freud, our “ignorance” about them? And what is the character of Freud's feelings about religion – is his just a stance of disillusionment, or is it tinged by a more personal ambivalence, perhaps even one that's particularly recognizable this holiday season? Plus: Martin Luther's bowel troubles, the importance of respecting Melusine's boundaries, and objections to Christmas standards at church dances from an unexpected source.Texts discussed include:Sigmund Freud, “Religious Actions and Obsessive Practices.”Donald Capps, Freud and Freudians on Religion: A Reader. EP 292 of RevolutionZ Professions React, Part Two, continues the Next American Revolution Sequence with the host Michael Albert conveying the words of various oral history interviewees' accounts of religious renovations, legal upheavals, and media makeovers that they helped undertake in the early years of the emerging Revolutionary Participatory Society. The interviewees, channeled by Albert, discuss with Miguel Guevara their getting started, their movement methods, confusions, controversies, goals, failures and successes.  Reverend Stephen Du Bois first takes us from his early years as a seminary student though his encounters with religious fundamentalism, to significant milestones victories in church renovation by way of his personal hunger strike and much wider sustained  militant activism to overcome religious and societal controversy and opposition. Then famed lawyer Robin Kunstler does the same for the legal realm by recounting  the disillusionment that shifted his path from a conventional lawyer to a justice advocate. His stories highlight the systemic failures of earlier criminal justice systems including policing, incarceration, and court procedures and the urgent need for and means of transformation, but also acknowledge the vexing still open questions of exactly what structures to enact so as to do much better. Finally, Leslie Zinn sheds light on mainstream media's role within society and  regarding RPS, emphasizing the importance of alternative media structures and practices including jobs balanced for empowerment, and recounting how activist RPS efforts led to changes in  media practices. From media profit seeking finance and political subservience to movement media improvements including cooperative planning efforts that reshaped the alternative media landscape, Zinn, like Du Bois and Kuntsler, offers a comprehensive look at RPS's early multifaceted approach to creating a more just society regarding various professional domains. How relevant are their accounts of their future experiences to our current choices? You decide.Support the Show.

Welcome to another enlightening episode of Father and Joe! I'm Joe Rockey, joined by Father Boniface Hicks, as we delve into the profound impact of truly embracing and living out one's faith. In this episode, we explore the complexities and transformative power of committing fully to a virtuous and holy life, drawing insightful analogies to help understand the journey of faith."Over the last week or so, I've really been thinking about our conversation regarding the numerous variables that can create problems, particularly when discussing social media's net negative impact. We can't isolate variables easily when it involves people in long-term situations," Joe reflects, setting the stage for a deeper discussion on the importance of a steadfast commitment to faith.Father Boniface emphasizes the challenge of living out the faith authentically, comparing it to the dedication required in physical fitness routines: "Those who are all in and truly committed to living a virtuous life end up in a situation that is undeniably better than those who lead a sinful, selfish existence."In our discussion, we touch upon the importance of having a clear value hierarchy, as articulated by Jordan Peterson: "We all have a God that we worship. Our whole humanity is ordered to that. What difference does it make if I worship one thing as opposed to another? Over decades, it's going to make a significant difference."Father Boniface addresses how this value hierarchy should be centered around the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and how this alignment impacts every aspect of our lives: "It's not just about going to mass; it's about ordering your entire life according to a value hierarchy where the Trinity is at the top."We also discuss practical steps to deepen one's faith, such as attending mass regularly, daily prayer, and engaging with the Bible: "Do I dedicate a little bit of time every day to learn more about this God that I am worshiping? Am I actually living out what I learn? When I fall short, do I repent and turn back?"This episode provides a roadmap for anyone seeking to enrich their spiritual journey, emphasizing the need for continuous effort and alignment with divine principles. As Joe aptly puts it, "It's a long-term process of how we should act to realize incremental gains and understand that there is growth happening."Join us as we explore these themes and offer guidance on how to integrate faith more deeply into your daily life, leading to a more fulfilling and holy existence. Sermon on the Mount E18 – In Matthew 6, Jesus turns his attention to religious practices of his day, specifically generosity to the poor, prayer, and fasting. But Jesus gives a surprising warning about these practices: if you do religious practices to get praise from people, then you're missing the point. In this episode, Jon and Tim discuss these three religious practices and reflect on the pitfalls of making religious devotion about yourself.View more resources on our website →Timestamps Chapter 1: Honor in Jesus' Day (00:00-6:32)Chapter 2: Giving to the Poor (6:32-26:00)Chapter 3: Prayer (26:00-34:15)Chapter 4: Fasting (34:15-54:14)Referenced ResourcesFasting: The Ancient Practices by Scot McKnightChristianity's Surprise: A Sure and Certain Hope by C. Although most of us associate the People's Republic of China (the PRC) with its officially sanctioned atheism, the government tolerates a variety of religious practice within the country. Regulating and controlling religious practice to assure that it does not pose a threat to the dominance of either the Chinese state or the ruling Chinese Communist Party is an on-going challenge to both party and state. Professor Susan McCarthy, the PC political science department's China expert and a leading authority on ethnic and religious minorities in China, has returned to Beyond Your News Feed to discuss recent developments in the PRC's efforts to regulate religious practice. Our discussion centers around two of Dr. McCarthy's recent papers on the topic: “Liberating Party Animals: Cultural Governance and ‘Life Release' Rituals in China” published in July 2022 in The China Journal and a yet unpublished paper: “Sinicizing China's World Muslim City: Spatial Politics, National Narratives, and Ethno-Religious Assimilation in the PRC”.
