Leading Beauty Expert and Author: Why We All Need To Be Aware of Toxic Beauty Culture - Ellen Atlanta

Outspoken Beauty

In this episode my guest is a woman who has a deep understanding of how the beauty industry works and feeds into modern culture. Ellen Atlanta is a writer and brand consultant specialising in Gen-Z and Millennial culture and  has worked with beauty giants including Estee Lauder, Boots, FeelUnique, Milk Makeup, Flannels Beauty and The Unseen Beauty. Her latest project has seen her become the author of one of the most important books that I've read in a long time. Pixel Flesh is an honest, scary and at times shocking observation of the toxic side of beauty and the online world:"We are living in a new age of beauty. With advancements in cosmetic surgery, augmented reality face filters, photo editing apps, and exposure to more images than ever, we have the ability to craft a version of ourselves that we want everyone to see. We pinch, pull, squeeze, tweeze, smooth and slice ourselves beyond recognition. But is our beauty culture truly empowering? Are we really in control? In Pixel Flesh, Ellen Atlanta holds a mirror up to our modern beauty ideal and the harm it is doing to women all around the world. Weaving in her own personal story with those of other women, she reconfigures our obsession with the cult of beauty and explores the realities of living in a digitally obsessed world where the pressure to present yourself both virtually and in person is all-consuming."During the episode we explore many of the themes in Ellen's book and have a really honest chat about the challenges that so many of us face when it comes to how we perceive and present ourselves to the world. We also look at the empowering and positive side of beauty and how when used in the right way it can build communities and make us feel increible.I hope you enjoy this thought provoking episode and that it sparks a debate about the highs and lows of being a woman in 2024.

Prepare to be captivated by Aaron Chatterley's entrepreneurial spirit as he escorts us through the creation of Indu Beauty, a teen-focused beauty brand. Aaron, co-founder of the successful Feel Unique, brings his internet marketing prowess from the late '90s to today's beauty industry, navigating the marketing minefield to connect with the critical teenage demographic. Leveraging insights from his twin daughters and the omnipresent influence of platforms like YouTube and TikTok, we uncover the importance of authenticity in speaking to young consumers about their beauty needs.  As a parent, he's seen firsthand the perplexity and concern that arise when young teens are confronted with beauty products slickly marketed with adult sensibilities. Together with Aaron, we address how to educate and protect this generation from premature exposure to products like retinols, which flood their social media feeds. Indu's commitment shines through in the pursuit of creating products that respect the unique needs of teen skin, all while promoting a positive and inclusive beauty narrative that resonates with their lifestyle and values.  The episode wraps up with a deep understanding of what it takes to stand out in the crowded beauty landscape. He shares his rich experience, akin to Sephora in the UK, in recognizing genuine 'white space' and what it means to offer a proposition that truly stands out. Join us as we cheer on Aaron and the innovation behind Indu Beauty's SPF, liquid eyeshadows, and nourishing milks, products specially crafted for the vibrant youth market, and learn why they're not just beneficial for teens, but their families too.Support the Show.Follow The Show On All Socials Using The Tag @skincareanarchy

Defining your target audience is key when building your brand as it's so important to know who you're selling your products or services to. In this episode, I hear from Aaron Chatterley, co-founder of teen beauty brand indu and beauty retailer Feelunique. Having co-founded Feelunique in 2005, Aaron and his team grew the business which was acquired by Sephora for £132 million in 2021. Since then, Aaron has co-founded indu to create beauty and skincare products tailored specifically to teenage skin. Aaron shares his advice on how to identify your target audience and how to build strong customer relationships with them. Aaron's advice: Be aware of all the different audiences out thereDepending on your product, attracting a younger audience early means you build a relationship soonerLook for a gap in the marketBe confident in your authenticityIt is worth spending money on doing thorough research: when you have defined your target audience, work with a cohort of these people and interrogate them exhaustivelyBe clear about who exactly your target audience isIt is easier for the retailer - and better for the investor too - to have an absolutely clear target audienceYour primary concerns are the excellence of your product (which means it will be bought a second time) and your authenticityFF&M enables you to own your own PR.
