My FINAL guest of 2024 is here! I've wanted to have makeup artist Sara Wren on the show for so long, and I'm so glad that the Director of Artistry for Milk Makeup is our final guest interview. In this episode the Philadelphia-based makeup artist takes us behind the scenes of her life in makeup. From being inspired by Gwen Stefani and her first makeup counter job working for Christian Dior to how she became Director of Artistry for one of the most no-nonsense, multi-tasking beauty brands to come out of the 2010s: Milk Makeup. As well as being hilarious and enlightening, this episode is a great opportunity to learn more about beauty retail, because when Sara first started working at Milk Makeup, she actually worked in account management, spending much of her life on the road and in hotels. Building, scaling and maintaining one brand is challenging. However, successfully creating multiple brands is a brilliant feat of focus and endurance. With this in mind, I wanted to learn from an expert brand builder.Hind Sebti is the founder of whind, a beauty brand that merges both science and sensoriality to deliver Golden Hour Beauty, inspired by her home of Morocco, in a high efficacy yet super indulging range of skin care, body care and fragrances, and the founder of Waldencast, a beauty and wellness platform that creates, acquires and scales the next generation of high growth purpose driven brands. Waldencast Ventures, is a privately owned brand incubator that has launched and built whind but also sister brands coat[s] and glaze. Waldencast PLC acquired Obagi skin care and Milk Makeup and was listed on the Nasdaq in July 2022 and valued then at over $1bn.As a multi-brand founder, Hind has a wealth of experience building brands that win customers' hearts. Keep listening to hear Hind's advice on building multiple brands and effectively managing different businesses at the same time. Hind's advice:As a founder you will start by doing everything yourself, but once you have a team you need to prioritise what to do yourself and what to delegateThose things only you can do will be the most important things - prioritise!Being able to trust your team and confidently delegate is vital; you cannot do everything yourselfA combination of ambition and humility is goodWhen building several brands at once, space out the various processes as you will learn from each one, which will benefit the next one - don't put all your eggs in the same basketBe flexible when building a company culture; every business is different, and every employee works differently. Allow the employees to contribute to the company culture as people are your most important assetBe flexible and adaptable; businesses may not evolve in the way you had expectedIf you can find a partner whose skills complement your own, you are in luck as it's great to have someone with whom you can discuss decisionsFF&M enables you to own your own PR. In this episode my guest is a woman who has a deep understanding of how the beauty industry works and feeds into modern culture. Ellen Atlanta is a writer and brand consultant specialising in Gen-Z and Millennial culture and has worked with beauty giants including Estee Lauder, Boots, FeelUnique, Milk Makeup, Flannels Beauty and The Unseen Beauty. Her latest project has seen her become the author of one of the most important books that I've read in a long time. Pixel Flesh is an honest, scary and at times shocking observation of the toxic side of beauty and the online world:"We are living in a new age of beauty. With advancements in cosmetic surgery, augmented reality face filters, photo editing apps, and exposure to more images than ever, we have the ability to craft a version of ourselves that we want everyone to see. We pinch, pull, squeeze, tweeze, smooth and slice ourselves beyond recognition. But is our beauty culture truly empowering? Are we really in control? In Pixel Flesh, Ellen Atlanta holds a mirror up to our modern beauty ideal and the harm it is doing to women all around the world. Weaving in her own personal story with those of other women, she reconfigures our obsession with the cult of beauty and explores the realities of living in a digitally obsessed world where the pressure to present yourself both virtually and in person is all-consuming."During the episode we explore many of the themes in Ellen's book and have a really honest chat about the challenges that so many of us face when it comes to how we perceive and present ourselves to the world. We also look at the empowering and positive side of beauty and how when used in the right way it can build communities and make us feel increible.I hope you enjoy this thought provoking episode and that it sparks a debate about the highs and lows of being a woman in 2024.

This week it's a very special Meet the Founder episode with Zanna Roberts Rassi, one of the four co-founders of Milk Makeup, a cruelty-free, vegan makeup brand that's all about easy, effortless results. Zanna launched the brand back in 2016 alongside her husband, Milk Studios co-founder Mazdack Rassi, as well as Georgie Greville and Dianna Ruth. Zanna and I met during a hectic week of Milk Makeup events that saw her flying from New York to London to Paris all in the space of a few days. In this bonus episode, we are talking about how working with a recruiter can help when you are looking for a job in the beauty industry. My guest is Brianna Blackwood-Mallory, a compassionate recruiter and inclusivity advocate who runs Königin Consulting & Recruiting. She shares the circuiritous path she took to her current role which included studying Chinese Language and Literature at Vassar College, to working as an editor in Berlin following graduation. Brianna found her calling in recruiting by first working on the marketing side of the industry but decided that she would rather get more involved in the sales side of business. Brianna began by recruiting for multiple roles for Google before transitioning to work with a creative firm where she got a chance to find candidates for various beauty roles working with companies ranging from Estée Lauder, to Supergoop and Milk Makeup, among others. And decided that it would be one of her concentrations. Brianna shares her candid thoughts on why she decided to approach recruiting holistically instead of checking a box and why it is important to create relationships with both the candidate and the companies she works with. The top things you need to do before you are ready to work with someone like herself (hint: work on that LinkedIn profile). And why the beauty industry is selling itself short by not being open to candidate that lack direct experience. Plus, we talk about how many interviews you should expect, why ghosting is a bad reflection on brands, and why networking matters.

When Milk Makeup launched in February 2016, it brought a refreshing yet irreverent take on the beauty world and promoted that being bold and different was to be celebrated. Born out of the NYC-based Milk Studios, Milk Makeup made a name for itself through daring and playful products like Kush Mascara and creating blotting papers that doubled as rolling papers for marijuana joints. Today, Milk Makeup is sold in 20 countries and is a Sephora U.S.-exclusive brand. It was acquired by a special-purpose acquisition vehicle from Waldencast in Nov. 2021 alongside Obagi skin care in a three-way transaction for $1.2 billion. “Milk Makeup started with the objective of broadening and challenging the definition of beauty. The founders talk about it not as a business but as a movement rooted in the core values of inclusion, diversity, creativity, self-expression,” Tim Coolican, CEO of Milk Makeup, said on this week's Glossy beauty podcast. Milk Makeup was founded by Milk Studios co-founder Mazdack Rassi, fashion editor and entertainment reporter Zanna Roberts Rassi, creative director Georgie Greville and product developer Dianna Ruth. As the Milk Makeup team looks toward the future of its business post-acquisition, they are focusing business efforts towards merch and product collaborations, international expansion and what it means to be a “cool” brand.
This week, we speak with with Michel Brousset, CEO of Waldencast Acquisition Corp. Waldencast announced a $1.2 billion three-way combination with skincare and cosmetics brands Obagi and Milk Makeup in November. Michel has taken a different approach to SPACs, using Waldencast as a vehicle to create a platform company. Waldencast's management will continue to operate the combined company over a longer term while tucking in additional acquisitions to its portfolio. We discuss the potential advantages to that strategy within the cosmetics space as well as how its first two targets, which are very different from one another, fit together in this model.
Milk Makeup's co-founder and creative director Georgie Greville is the type of leader that's always looking to learn and evolve. On this episode, Liz and Amanda are talking with Hitha Papelu about her multi-hyphenate endeavors as a writer, entrepreneur, speaker, CEO, mom, and more. Following a career-defining year, Hitha reflects on her greatest accomplishments and offers a transparent look at areas of growth that she plans to work on in the new year. Hitha shares about her new book and how she manages her multiple entrepreneurial roles – and motherhood! Liz, Amanda, and Hitha talk about goal-setting, morning rituals, the importance of technology breaks, and her favorite mom hacks. IN THIS EPISODE: [00:01] Hitha Papelu Introduced [02:50] Talking about her new book [04:30] Balancing career and personal life [07:57] Mixing family and work [12:17] Goal Check [17:18] How motherhood changes you [21:21] Hitha's greatest accomplishment [24:00] Thoughts on being an influencer [28:27] Hitha's signature style [32:53] What have you done for you lately? [37:49] Latest obsessions [41:29] Mom hack KEY TAKEAWAYS: How do you do it all? You don't. The only way you do it all is you don't do it all at the same time. Prioritize one to two things you could do very well and let a lot of the other stuff go. Everyone has goals. How you choose to pursue them is on you. So often women minimize their goals and dreams. Bring the people in your life – who want to support you – along on the journey as you pursue your goals. Ask for help or tell them what you want to do and let them offer help. Life is short and your style is going to change. Never stop rediscovering your style and what you want to wear. Stop diminishing art that is created by women for women, or let it be treated as less than. Not all women's stories have to be tortured or a struggle. Let's celebrate women's happiness, too. Mom hack: Ask your kids what snack they want the night before, put it on a sticky note as a reminder to you and accountability to you kids. And set the table for breakfast the night before to save yourself time. Hitha's challenge: Get offline this holiday season and figure out who you are. Reacquaint yourself with how you define yourself and how you want to be defined. Create micro rituals for your morning and start the day off doing something for yourself – like reading a book, meditation, or yoga. Today, we talk about friendship, careers and how a mutual love of cheese boards inspired us to start MomGoals! We give a taste of what's to come in future episodes by asking each other the hard-hitting questions, like how we make time for ourselves while juggling careers and raising babies, what our latest obsessions are and our tried and true mom-hacks. IN THIS EPISODE: [00:36] Introduction [01:58] How being a mom changes your career [03:12] Love of cheese boards [04:17] What have you done for you lately? [10:43] Latest obsessions [15:25] #MomGoals and best mom tips [18:50] Amanda's mom hacks KEY TAKEAWAYS: #MomGoals is a space for moms to tell their stories and inspire others. So many times women are defined by their careers or being a mom, we want to show how multidimensional women can be as they balance careers, parenting, and more! Becoming a mom is a major life transition that impacts every aspect of life. It can be hard for moms to put themselves first before their children or family, but that is sometimes the best thing to do for yourself because then you have more energy for others. On this episode, Liz and Amanda are talking with celebrity fitness coach and mompreneur, Anna Kaiser. Anna is a professional dancer, choreographer and founder and creator of Anna Kaiser Studios and the Anna Kaiser Technique. Her passion is helping women find freedom and purpose through movement. Liz, Amanda, and Anna talk about motherhood, tips for prioritizing movement and self-care, and Anna shares the one thing she wishes she knew at the start of her career. IN THIS EPISODE: [00:01] Anna Kaiser Introduced [08:30] Anna's career journey [15:37] Creating AKT [18:32] Balancing motherhood and career [20:32] Anna's athletic brand line with Target [22:50] Greatest accomplishment [28:05] One thing you wish you knew before you started your career [30:28] What have you done for you lately? [31:08] Latest obsessions [35:40] Mom tips [41:52] Mom goals KEY TAKEAWAYS: Anna has had a successful career as a professional dancer and choreographer where she performed in the US and internationally. Her performances and tours include the international tour of Fame, the 50th anniversary of the Music Man, the 50th anniversary of West Side Story, and more! She was also a backup dancer for Shakira. While dancing professionally she also continued her education in movement and mechanics, studying how the body and muscle are connected. She is certified in Pilates and yoga and in 2002 she began working as a boutique fitness instructor. In 2013, she created the Anna Kaiser Technique (AKT) and opened her first studio in New York City. In 2018, AKT was sold and they now have over 120 franchise studios and international studios in Japan, Saudi Arabia and Australia There isn't ever going to be a perfect balance when it comes to motherhood and your career. In Anna's words, “I don't think it's possible to get enough of everything and find perfect balance.” During the shutdown in 2020, Anna was pregnant, and overnight she had to pivot and transform her studios and fitness classes into 100% virtual while also moving from New York City to Connecticut. Her friendships with other moms and entrepreneurs played an integral role in getting through such a stressful and challenging season. Advice for entrepreneurs: Choose a lane and do what you do well. Find people to round out your weaknesses, put together a list of all those things that you either don't do well, or you would rather not do so that you can focus your energy on what you do well. Self-care should be a lifestyle commitment for moms. Do something for yourself to feel better in your skin. You feel stronger when you walk out in the world and when you learn something new too. Education is the new luxury for us moms to be able to learn something new. Mom hack: Use a sticker chart to track your workouts or a certain self-care activity that you choose. When you see your progress on the calendar in front of you, the amount of days you've taken time for yourself can be very sobering and inspiring. Find a workout that you enjoy and really love to do. If you don't enjoy it, it won't happen. BIO: ANNA KAISER BIO: Anna Kaiser is a celebrity fitness professional, choreographer, and entrepreneur. In episode seventy one of the Glow Journal podcast, host Gemma Watts talks to the co founder of Milk Makeup, Zanna Roberts Rassi.Zanna's very first job was as a model, after her boyfriend at the time secretly entered her into a modelling competition. While it was never really her passion, Zanna explains that it did open her eyes to the number of roles that existed (and still exist) behind the scenes. She spent most of her time on set asking questions of those around her- so it's no surprise that the job she eventually moved into was that of a journalist. It was while having her makeup done on set that Zanna realised she wanted to be part of the story telling of beauty, so she made herself known to the Beauty Editor of the magazine for which she was modelling and secured herself an internship. In time, Zanna became a Beauty Assistant and eventually Beauty Editor at Marie Claire magazine, during which time she met her now husband, Mazdack Rassi, co-founder of Milk Studios. Zanna then moved from London to New York and was soon asked to host a fashion segment on the Today Show. That segment became a launchpad for her television career, with Zanna now serving as E!'s style correspondent, a Today Show contributor and, previously, as a guest judge and mentor on Project Runway All Stars. It was in around 2013 that Zanna, her husband and their soon-to-be Milk co-founders Georgie Greville and Dianna Ruth began to conceptualise what would eventually become Milk Makeup, craving easy, fun, multi-tasking makeup. They launched in 2016 with 85 products, and today Milk Makeup is available to consumers in over 130 countries. In this conversation, Zanna shares why Milk are intent on creating products that have never been seen before, the story of her stint as an undercover makeup artist at Paris Fashion Week, and why her first real encounter with beauty was reminiscent of, in her words, “advanced hypothermia.” Read more at glowjournal.comFollow Milk Makeup on Instagram at @milkmakeup.Follow Zanna Roberts Rassi on Instagram at @zannarassiStay up to date with Gemma on Instagram at @gemkwatts and @glow.journal, or get in touch at hello@gemkwatts.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

“I have a story. It’s hard, it’s gnarly but what I’m doing with it - that’s the work.”- Sophia RoeThis week, I’m bringing back one of my favorite episodes with chef and storyteller Sophia Roe! Sophia’s wisdom, humor and excitement for life are all so refreshing and a joy to witness. Her experience growing up with a mother who suffered from substance abuse, learning to love and embrace her brown skin, and ultimately becoming a chef determined to make food more accessible and enjoyable for all is truly remarkable. Tune in to hear us talk about the correlation between skin and food, curly hair (which she just cut off by the way!), her stint at MILK Makeup, and the lack of diversity within the wellness industry. The Beauty Of Fashion. Zanna Roberts Rassi grew up influenced by the music of Manchester, and by sisters obsessed with style. The New York-based, Emmy award-winning fashion and beauty journalist, stylist, television host, and co-founder of Milk Makeup is a highly recognized expert of fashion and beauty. Zanna has an innate on-the-pulse vision and mentality that can be attributed to her many years of experience at magazines and in editorial. But it’s her 360 approach and high-low sensibility for fashion coupled with her refined sense of style and next-level network of design insiders that keeps her a cut above the rest when it comes to delivering as an on-air tv fashion host + personality for E!, Rachel Ray, and countless others…ever since she hit the scene. As one of four co founders of the ultra modern, innovative, clean, and sought after beauty brand Milk Makeup, she is also match-made-in-heaven-tasked with representing them internationally on television, in the media, and at events. On this podcast we discuss how Zanna began in the magazine business, her most impactful influences, her work with everyone’s favorite retail resource, Target, what makes for a good editor and great tv host, the behind the scenes of hosting, and the evolution of Milk as a brand and her inspiring collaborators, what's involved in building a beauty brand, what's next for Milk Makeup, and of course a Milk product deep-dive. Mazdack Rassi is the Co-Founder of Milk Studios, Milk Makeup, and Camp David. Over the last decade, Milk has gone from being a production and events space to a full-service creative beehive doing work in print, physical, and digital domains. Above all, however, the power of Milk has been its ability to cultivate a proactive and engaged community. We talk about: the codes and inclusive DNA of Milk, the duality between content and commerce, the evolution of fashion shows, the importance for brands to have point-of-views, and more. Interviewed by Mortimer Singer.

If you’re wondering what the new guard of beauty editorial looks like, look no further than Akili King. The 23-year old Chicago native and NYU Gallatin graduate has published a book of her own poems (titled AWAKENING), and worked for brands like The FADER, Milk Makeup, and Fashion Fair. All that being said, her current position as the Beauty Editorial Assistant at Vogue is “still pretty surreal” because, how could it not be?! Between making a name for herself within the beauty industry, modelling, DJ-ing, and practicing yoga, Akili is undoubtedly one to watch.Links to Products/Resources Mentioned: HAIR: Soultanicals Fro Despair, Rahua Cream Wax, DevaCurl Supercurl Coconut Curl Styler, Oribe Moisture & Control Line, Pattern Beauty Hydration Shampoo, Pattern Beauty Heavy ConditionerMAKEUP: Boy De Chanel Eyebrow Pencil, Sappho Essential Foundation, Milk Makeup High Volume Kush Mascara SKINCARE: Klur Face Mask, Caudalie Deep Cleansing Exfoliator, Epara Skincare, Caudalie Facial, Heyday Facials, Dermasaa (Samantha Mims) Facials, Silk Eye Mask, Gel Eye Mask, RESOURCES: Naked Beauty Amazon Store, AWAKENING, Michelle Phan (The Cut), AndreasChoice Drome, Kirby Jean-Raymond (Medium), @v93ooFollow Akili on IG: @akili_ Stay in touch with me: @brookedevard Join the Naked Beauty Community on IG: @nakedbeautyplanet Rate, Subscribe & Review the Podcast on

Compelling content, experiences and partnerships for brands as part of a complex creative ecosystem with Milk Group Angela Wei, Managing Director of Milk Agency (a creative agency, production resource and brand partner as part of Milk Group, a culturally conscious company), joins Lisa Berger, Edward Hertzman and Dalia Strum at the MouthMedia Network studios powered by Sennheiser. Presented by 24 Seven Talent.Collaboration and expression, brand collaboration, and the grey area in between Wei discusses how Milk Agency as an extension of Milk Studios (Milk Group), a full service creative studio started 20 years ago as one of the first independent photo studios, how the agency as an incarnation of Milk is a platform for creative collaboration and expression, the culture platforms, how Milk.xyz features emerging talent and cultural stories, and the most recent iteration is Milk Makeup (direct to consumer and then via Sephora), and how Milk Group developed organically, but is a complex ecosystem. She shares he career path an early employee at Razorfish, from digital content to the ad world, working at MTV and at Discovery Channel, becoming interested in how those brands collaborated with other brands, working at Time Inc. in branded solutions, and interest in the grey area between brands when collaborating.A content pyramid, a culture shift for younger generations, and working with makeup lines when you have a makeup line She mentions content as a pyramid — at the top are films and featured commercials, down to snackable content at the bottom – and how Milk creates throughout the pyramid. She touches on how modern marketing is not enough, content is the future, brands being publishers and that people haven’t figured that out yet. The industry is intertwined, with big media houses pushing to keep integrity and trust, and how younger people are more comfortable with brands as a culture shift, with brands engaging more and creating dialogue. Wei says that an audience is a pyramid too, scaling is meaningless without a true purpose and a north star, and collaboration has to come down to the foundation of what a brand is about. Plus, the impact of having a makeup line on having makeup brands as clients, and Wei brings a seaweed snack.Diminishing IP value, evaluating success, Virginia Wolf Wei covers the “barbell model”, pure performance marketing now, how a type of brand determines the type of brand content and experiences, pop ups, embedding a brand experience that you take with you, how the IP value of brands are diminishing, how content is also what you input, and customizing content. She also shares perspectives on the ROI of branding and experiences, how one measures success of experiences and branding, and how it is usually qualitative, the impact of expectation of clickable marketing, and the danger of the expectation of never ending growth. And, Wei’s favorite books, being inspired by Virginia Wolf, the importance of curiosity and reflection, having space to explore, a crazy dog person, and how challenge comes from discomfort. From escaping the Iranian revolution to launching the wildly successful Milk Makeup line. Along the way Rassi co-founded Milk, the world’s coolest photo studios, created 9 other companies, and revolutionized New York Fashion Week by launching MADE - a FREE runway venue for young designers. Here he talks about being a refugee in Champagne Illinois and how New York Made him.
