What do you need to know about the science of aging, and how can it be approached from a medical aesthetics perspective as well as a functional wellness perspective? Aging doesn't just show up on the surface—it's happening at every level of tissue. It's important for patients to know more about this so they can also truly understand what can help. There are five layers of the face, starting with the bone. Believe it or not, your facial bone structure does change over time. There are also fat layers on the face that deflate and descend over time. Of course, there is also a loss of collagen and elastin in the skin over time. A great provider knows this and can educate you about what's happening. Our treatments at Beauty Culture aren't just about helping you look younger. Looking younger might be the goal, but feeling healthy and well is important too. This is a part of our elite patient journey. Sometimes you don't even realize how bad you feel until you start to feel better. Once you start seeing the changes, it's truly motivating. Your anti-aging journey is one that you may go through for months or years. When you find the right place, you know it's the one that goes above and beyond to provide value. Feeling listened to and understood makes you feel that much greater about your results. Aging is inevitable, but together we can navigate it with grace and confidence. www.beautyculturespa.com @beautyculture.medspa

Today's episode is so insightful and amazing and I am very excited to share it with you! My guest, Martine De Luna, is a coach who supports women to respect the masculine that we see in men, in life, and in God so that they can return to their feminine nature with their spouses. Martine and I dive into so many of the taboo topics that we experience during our walk through finding our true feminine nature. We touch on the damaging messaging of purity culture and how our biology already has systems in place to protect us and to help us be very selective in finding a mate. We have turned away from the true biology of our feminine nature, and in that, we have missed the wiring of our biology and how it can protect us. We also dive into what it means to be hormonally male and how our body and our biology will automatically flip our hormones to put us in a masculine place with our hormones during the appropriate times in our lives, such as during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We, as women, need to understand when our biology is making these shifts so we can have a more feminine awareness of why we experience hormonal and behavioral shifts and how it impacts our spouses. This episode is full of so much wisdom and insight and I am so excited to share it with you. Tune in today! In this episode:[00:01:54] Welcome my guest in this episode, Martine De Luna.[00:08:04] What does true biological femininity look like?[00:17:32] What is the need of the masculine?[00:19:12] The roles of masculinity and femininity in nature.[00:28:38] Martine shares her view on purity culture. 597. Part 1 of Liz Ellis joining us to discuss her excellent book, The Great Power of Small Nations. Part 1.Large Power of Small Nations. Part 1. In The Great Power of Small Nations, Elizabeth N. Ellis (Peoria) tells the stories of the many smaller Native American nations that shaped the development of the Gulf South. Based on extensive archival research and oral histories, Ellis's narrative chronicles how diverse Indigenous peoples—including Biloxis, Choctaws, Chitimachas, Chickasaws, Houmas, Mobilians, and Tunicas—influenced and often challenged the growth of colonial Louisiana. The book centers on questions of Native nation-building and international diplomacy, and it argues that Native American migration and practices of offering refuge to migrants in crisis enabled Native nations to survive the violence of colonization. Elizabeth N. Ellis (Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma) is Associate Professor of History at Princeton University. Now available: Liberty in Louisiana: A Comedy. Mahalia Jackson, one of America's greatest gospel singers, was born in New Orleans on October 26, 1911 to Charity Clark, a laundress and maid, and Johnny Jackson, a Baptist preacher, barber and longshoreman. She attended McDonogh School No. 24 until the eighth grade. Influenced by the music of the Sanctified Church she began singing at the young age of four in the children's choir of Plymouth Rock Baptist Church. In 1927, Mahalia migrated to Chicago and while working as a maid, laundress and date packer studied beauty culture at Madam C. J. Walker's and Scott Institute of Beauty Culture. She opened a beauty shop after this training. When the director of the choir at Greater Salem Baptist Church in Chicago heard her sing she became the choir's first soloist. Her beautiful voice made her popular. During the 1930s, she toured the "storefront church circuit" singing to congregations. Jackson bridged the gap between the sacred and the secular in her performances, often using scriptures to justify her use of hand clapping and stomping while singing. The next two decades found Mahalia recording songs and touring the United States and Europe. She became closely associated with the civil rights movement during the 1960s often singing at benefits for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, the boycotters and student sit-ins. Jackson died on January 27, 1972 and is buried in Providence Memorial Park in Metairie. In a world obsessed with youth and perfection, the new film "The Substance" explores the dark side of beauty culture and the immense pressure women face to conform to unrealistic standards. The movie follows the story of an aging TV star, played by Demi Moore, who discovers a mysterious potion that can restore her youth and beauty. However, this seemingly miraculous solution comes at a terrifying cost."The Substance" serves as a chilling metaphor for the lengths women go to in pursuit of unattainable beauty ideals. Transforming the health of the skin truly takes a combination approach, and at Beauty Culture, Lauren has all the tools at her disposal to improve your skin with precision and safety. Laser therapy can be very effective on the skin, and there are different types of lasers available too. In this episode my guest is a woman who has a deep understanding of how the beauty industry works and feeds into modern culture. Ellen Atlanta is a writer and brand consultant specialising in Gen-Z and Millennial culture and has worked with beauty giants including Estee Lauder, Boots, FeelUnique, Milk Makeup, Flannels Beauty and The Unseen Beauty. Her latest project has seen her become the author of one of the most important books that I've read in a long time. Pixel Flesh is an honest, scary and at times shocking observation of the toxic side of beauty and the online world:"We are living in a new age of beauty. With advancements in cosmetic surgery, augmented reality face filters, photo editing apps, and exposure to more images than ever, we have the ability to craft a version of ourselves that we want everyone to see. We pinch, pull, squeeze, tweeze, smooth and slice ourselves beyond recognition. But is our beauty culture truly empowering? Are we really in control? In Pixel Flesh, Ellen Atlanta holds a mirror up to our modern beauty ideal and the harm it is doing to women all around the world. Weaving in her own personal story with those of other women, she reconfigures our obsession with the cult of beauty and explores the realities of living in a digitally obsessed world where the pressure to present yourself both virtually and in person is all-consuming."During the episode we explore many of the themes in Ellen's book and have a really honest chat about the challenges that so many of us face when it comes to how we perceive and present ourselves to the world. We also look at the empowering and positive side of beauty and how when used in the right way it can build communities and make us feel increible.I hope you enjoy this thought provoking episode and that it sparks a debate about the highs and lows of being a woman in 2024.

Are you tired of the overwhelming pressure to maintain a youthful appearance? Have you found yourself trapped in a cycle of trying endless anti-aging products, only to feel unsatisfied and constantly striving to keep up? It's time to break free from the toxic beauty culture holding you back and redefine your worth beyond appearance. We need to explore how embracing natural aging can lead to a sense of liberation, allowing you to tap into the beauty of your journey. Aging should be celebrated, not shamed. About seven years ago, as I sat in the salon watching all these beautiful women, including myself, apply harmful chemicals to their scalps, I realized something needed to change. This ignited my curiosity, and I began to ask deeper questions. Why did we all feel we had to harm ourselves with these toxins being rubbed into our scalps to be acceptable in society? Why aren't gray hairs a sign of wisdom instead of something we try to hide? That moment changed everything and opened a new lens on the beauty industry and the world of aging with confidence. I let my grays grow out and haven't dyed my hair since. I have decided to accept the story that aging is a natural, beautiful, privileged part of my life. There's nothing to change. There's only everything to honor, celebrate, and notice. ~Dr. Amanda Aging is a natural process that should be embraced rather than feared. It is a journey of wisdom, experience, and growth. Embracing the changes with age can lead to a deeper sense of self-acceptance and confidence. After having some fantastic guests on the podcast recently, I wanted to have a solo episode to catch you up on everything happening with Beauty Culture, Cultured Wellness, and myself. I'm going to share the new products and services we're offering lately, and themes that I'm seeing come together in my businesses. I talk about some of my recent travels, sharing insights from a training session for Allergan injectors and my approach to handling competition in the beauty industry. I discuss the importance of seizing growth opportunities, and touch on my role in guiding new injectors. I'll emphasize the strength that comes from a narrowed focus and how I've seen it grow my business. By narrowing your scope, you actually reduce the need to be different. Narrowing your focus and being strong somewhere is better than expanding your focus and being weak everywhere. Maintaining a concentrated brand identity is so important. I discuss the necessity of leadership in making strategic decisions that align with the brand's vision, even if it means prioritizing team development over direct patient care. The process of refining our offerings at the med spa has been allowing us to offer what resonates most with our clients, thereby enhancing the brand's appeal and establishing a deep connection with a specific clientele. Finally, I highlight our collaboration with Quicksilver Scientific, which has propelled us forward in hormone therapy innovation, while remaining faithful to our wellness philosophy. I also talk about how teaming up with Colorescience and their skincare products has been another step towards embodying the core values of our brand. In today's episode we're exploring the world of ozone therapy, a treatment gaining traction in the wellness world. We explore the potential benefits of ozone saunas, specifically focusing my recent experience with HOCATT Ozone Sauna, a therapy session that provides 10 treatments in one, at Tringali Vibrant Health in West Palm Beach, Florida. I am thrilled to share my personal experience and how it invigorated my health journey. As we journey together in the wellness world, we can't ignore the lurking shadow of chronic diseases. Conditions like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes, and autoimmune disorders are disturbingly on the rise. Environmental factors such as pollution and chemicals contribute to these health issues, but there are innovative solutions like ozone therapy that can provide support. Ozone therapy, often misunderstood, is a potent treatment that shows promise in battling chronic diseases. It works by enhancing oxygen delivery and utilization in the body, a fundamental aspect of health often overlooked by traditional medicine. But it's crucial to remember that ozone therapy isn't a standalone solution; it's a part of a holistic approach to health. I'll go through eight things that ozone therapy can do for our bodies on a scientific level. For example, with its power to increase oxygen delivery and utilization, stimulate cytokine function, and promote detoxification, ozone therapy could be a game changer for people with so-called incurable infections. I'm really excited to be able to bring this into Beauty Culture. It was such an amazing experience and I really look forward to being able to get ongoing treatment myself, while also having the ability to provide it to my clients. We're diving deep into anti-aging in this episode. There's a new revolutionary solution that could be your answer to a youthful, glowing complexion. But before getting into that, I want to talk about the concept of aging itself. Have you ever wondered about the science behind aging, why we get wrinkles, and why our skin loses its elasticity? Aging is not just about the passing of years. It's a complex process that affects every layer of our face, starting from the bone. Youthful skin is typically soft and glowing, and contains plenty of collagen and elastin. By the time you're 40, you lose about 1% of your collagen every year. Let's talk about SKINVIVE. This is a breakthrough treatment, which is not classified as a filler, but is a hyaluronic acid injectable that acts as an internal moisturizer. Studies done on forearms show that SKINVIVE significantly changes the hydration level of treated tissues and returns it to that youthful look. We've had treatments like topicals, chemical peels, micro needling, and more, but the problem is that some of these can take several series to see improvement. SKINVIVE, on the other hand, requires no downtime. It has also been FDA approved by several clinical trials. If you come to Beauty Culture, there are two options for SKINVIVE. Level 1 is $800, while Level 2 is $1200. If you are eager to restore that youthful glow, SKINVIVE could really be your answer, especially since it enhances the effects of Botox and filler as well. www.beautyculturespa.com @beautyculture.medspa
This week Jun and Daniel explore a conversation Daniel had with his co-worker shortly after moving to Korea that will forever be ingrained into his memory, and was somewhat of a precursor to this podcast: being nerdy. Does this concept exist in Korea, and if so, how does it differ from in America? Is being smart in Korea the same as being cool in America? Who gets bullied in Korea? Does wearing glasses have the same stigma in Korea? What constitutes socioeconomic status in each country? What is the modern equivalent of Korean royalty? How do Koreans feel about being Korean? If you're interested in any of these questions, tune in to hear Daniel and Jun discuss all this and more! This week Daniel debunks a common misconception Koreans have about Japan's name for America, but Jun gets back at Daniel by schooling him on a famous American scholar. As a reminder, we record one episode a week in-person from Seoul, South Korea. Plastic surgery is more popular than ever, and women are paying an incredible amount for it. The epicenter of the plastic surgery industry is undeniably South Korea — Seoul leads the world in plastic surgery rates. Elise Hu experienced this culture firsthand as the NPR bureau chief responsible for coverage of North Korea, South Korea, and Japan. In her new book: “Flawless: Lessons in Looks and Culture from the K-Beauty Capital,” she explores if our constant drive to look “better than ever” will ever be enough. In Mailbag, we hear from a listener who has a 401(k) plan from a previous employer and isn't sure what to do with it next. We also hear from a listener who is 72 and wonders where they can splurge a little! In our money tip of the week, we go over how to decide when is the right time to sell a stock. It's no secret that American beauty culture, driven by Hollywood and social media, preys on our insecurities and promotes unattainable standards around the world. But another country is giving the U.S. a run for its money. In her new book Flawless, journalist Elise Hu explores the global rise and influence of K-beauty, or South Korean beauty culture, now a $10 billion industry. Hu, NPR's former Seoul Bureau chief, reveals how that city became the plastic surgery capital of the world. And she examines how other countries, including the U.S., are now embracing South Korean beauty products and practices like double cleansing and snail mucus face masks. We'll talk with Hu about how K-beauty standards both empower and constrain women, and about what it means to be “beautiful” in the 21st century. Guests: Elise Hu, NPR host-at-large and the host of TED Talks Daily; former Seoul bureau chief, NPR. Author of the new book "Flawless: Lessons in Looks and Culture from the K-Beauty Capital"

Author and one of NPR's beloved hosts, Elise Hu, joins Brittany Luse to talk about her new book: Flawless: Lessons in Looks and Culture from the K-Beauty Capital. For Elise, what started as a professional move to Seoul turned into a long-term interest in beauty culture and the societal demand to look flawless. Elise and Brittany talk about the high price of South Korea's lookism, how the government props up beauty culture, the technological gaze, and how Korean beauty culture is spreading throughout the United States. You can follow us on Twitter @NPRItsBeenAMin and email us at ibam@npr.org.

Today we're welcoming our very first guest onto the podcast: Brad Telepo. Brad is a time management coach and is responsible for streamlining the inner workings of Beauty Culture. As your business grows, it's easy to get buried in the business, which Brad knows how to overcome. If you started your business with time freedom in mind only to realize you have little time to do what you love, it's time to make a mindset shift. Your business needs to run well without you. Otherwise, you'll have little space to reflect on your business and water your creative ideas. It all starts with setting up your business to be able to scale it. The right structure keeps you from imploding; being unable to handle the business you have or completely running out of steam. Despite this being a common belief, setting structure and creating a foundation in your business doesn't make it more rigid. It actually creates more freedom. It can be tempting to hope that the technology you're using will help set the right systems in place. The truth is the platform matters much less than your own behavior. You need to have clear agreements in your business that make it leak-proof. Getting team buy-in when it comes to systems and change starts with a conversation. Be clear on what the “why” is for the business and for the individual team member. You have to get out of your head and get your business set into a system you can trust. Today it's Jessica Christy, Owner of Beauty Culture Med Spa and Training Academy in Bloomfield, Michigan. She has done some really incredible things in a very short amount of time in her business. Jessica worked as a physician assistant, which eventually led her to fall in love with aesthetics. She felt happiest when she was helping patients feel more confident, but hadn't found the right practice to give her the freedom she wanted. This led to her opening Beauty Culture in July 2019, which was meant to be a small operation, but has blown up beyond her wildest dreams. When some of Jessica's staff left and started their own practice, she truly leaned into it instead of being angry. Based on what she has learned from this experience, Jessica reveals what she looks for when interviewing potential hires. Even though it makes sense to her, Jessica is still surprised that her med spa's numbers are better despite not replacing some staff members that left. She explains why having less staff which don't align with your business' values is actually a net positive. We wrap up by hearing the next steps that Jessica is working on in her business. She says that the most important thing is for her to continue putting her actions where her mouth is, along with truly investing in the wonderful women on her team.
