today we are going to chat about toxic beauty standards. as a girl, I have struggled with the beauty standards we face as a population. it seems like a lot of you girls also struggle with them, as I have received countless requests and DM's to cover this subject. having the perfect skin, the perfect body, the perfect clothing, the perfect everything is really exhausting. to be convinced on social media and IRL that there is something wrong with you, even if things like acne and stretch marks are completely normal, is messed up. so join me in today's episode as I cover how subjective beauty really is, the impact of social media, and all of the things women are told they should fear (cough cough, aging, a tummy pouch, acne), when really, they are completely normal things. it is NORMAL to want to feel beautiful. it is OK to work hard on your skincare and appearance. but, once that starts to become your self-worth, that is where we have to draw the line.
In this episode my guest is a woman who has a deep understanding of how the beauty industry works and feeds into modern culture. Ellen Atlanta is a writer and brand consultant specialising in Gen-Z and Millennial culture and has worked with beauty giants including Estee Lauder, Boots, FeelUnique, Milk Makeup, Flannels Beauty and The Unseen Beauty. Her latest project has seen her become the author of one of the most important books that I've read in a long time. Pixel Flesh is an honest, scary and at times shocking observation of the toxic side of beauty and the online world:"We are living in a new age of beauty. With advancements in cosmetic surgery, augmented reality face filters, photo editing apps, and exposure to more images than ever, we have the ability to craft a version of ourselves that we want everyone to see. We pinch, pull, squeeze, tweeze, smooth and slice ourselves beyond recognition. But is our beauty culture truly empowering? Are we really in control? In Pixel Flesh, Ellen Atlanta holds a mirror up to our modern beauty ideal and the harm it is doing to women all around the world. Weaving in her own personal story with those of other women, she reconfigures our obsession with the cult of beauty and explores the realities of living in a digitally obsessed world where the pressure to present yourself both virtually and in person is all-consuming."During the episode we explore many of the themes in Ellen's book and have a really honest chat about the challenges that so many of us face when it comes to how we perceive and present ourselves to the world. We also look at the empowering and positive side of beauty and how when used in the right way it can build communities and make us feel increible.I hope you enjoy this thought provoking episode and that it sparks a debate about the highs and lows of being a woman in 2024.

Are you tired of the overwhelming pressure to maintain a youthful appearance? Have you found yourself trapped in a cycle of trying endless anti-aging products, only to feel unsatisfied and constantly striving to keep up? It's time to break free from the toxic beauty culture holding you back and redefine your worth beyond appearance. We need to explore how embracing natural aging can lead to a sense of liberation, allowing you to tap into the beauty of your journey. Aging should be celebrated, not shamed. About seven years ago, as I sat in the salon watching all these beautiful women, including myself, apply harmful chemicals to their scalps, I realized something needed to change. This ignited my curiosity, and I began to ask deeper questions. Why did we all feel we had to harm ourselves with these toxins being rubbed into our scalps to be acceptable in society? Why aren't gray hairs a sign of wisdom instead of something we try to hide? That moment changed everything and opened a new lens on the beauty industry and the world of aging with confidence. I let my grays grow out and haven't dyed my hair since. I have decided to accept the story that aging is a natural, beautiful, privileged part of my life. There's nothing to change. There's only everything to honor, celebrate, and notice. ~Dr. Amanda Aging is a natural process that should be embraced rather than feared. It is a journey of wisdom, experience, and growth. That same year she began utilizing holistic techniques to heal her chronic illnesses, going cold turkey off of fourteen daily medications, and healing herself naturally. She has been Rx-drug free for over a decade and has been on a conscious quest to move humanity in a more sustainable, healthy, and holistic direction ever since. She shared the one-of-a-kind recipe, and her impressive before and after photos. After just three months of use, Mackey had gained two cup sizes! Modern life can be pretty toxic at times. The focus on extending shelf life of products can lead to the addition of harmul chemicals. Not to mention that coloring or straightening, injecting our faces and so on just really involve chemicals to work as they do. The average woman uses 12 different beauty products every day. This means that you can absorb many endocrine and hormone disrupters without knowing it. In terms of fertility concerns specifically, EDCs have been linked with reproductive development disorders, ovarian dysfunction, subfertility, and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in women. Case in point: a study published online Dec. 3, 2019, by the International Journal of Cancer found a link between hair dye and breast cancer. Women in the study who used permanent hair dye at least once in the 12 months leading up to the study had a 9% higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who didn't use hair dye. Harmful additives like Parabens, Toluene, Triclosan, Phthalates and lead are just some of many to look for. In today's session we dive into harmful ingredients and their aliases. Its easy to turn a blind eye to this kind of thing. However, if you are at a point where you feel like nothing is working and/or you just want to take charge and do everything you can, then listen in.You'll Learn: What is an EDC (endocrine distrupting chemical)Harmful chemicals commonly found in beauty products Research supporting the link between certain chemicals and infertility Thanks so much for listening to our podcast! Did you know that the products you're using on your body can be wreaking havoc on your hormones? While it's hard to believe that conventional beauty companies would ever include toxic ingredients in their products, the fact is that they do—it's still common practice and perfectly legal. To give you an idea of where we are, consider that there are 11 cosmetic ingredients currently banned by the FDA, while in the EU, over 1,300 ingredients are banned. Companies operating in the US face much less stringent regulations than companies operating in the EU do, so US companies continue to pack the products that we use every day (mascara, face wash, conditioner, make up and more) with potentially harmful ingredients that can include known carcinogens, irritants, and endocrine disruptors. On today's episode Cody has invited special guest and expert on clean beauty, Mindy Mackenzie. "I made a film for PepWeb on the research of Beatrice Beebe. I made the video for her picture book, The Mother-Infant Interaction Picture Book, and various other short films. These are deep dives into mother-infant dyads that reveal something, i.e. rupture and repair, various kinds of dyadic interchanges. These are available for free on YouTube. That's another way that I use my analytic self and my documentary maker self together. I'm much happier with the YouTube films even though they're less produced because they reach a wide audience - they are for parents, not clinicians. I want to get the story of this way of thinking or various ways of working, or psychoanalysis itself out to the greater public because I'm such an evangelizer for it. It changed my life in so many ways, and I think it's a very different animal than what the wider world (if they've heard of it at all) thinks that it is - it's so alive these days, so integrative, and so worthy of letting people know.” Episode Description: We began with Karen sharing with us her journey from documentary filmmaker to psychoanalyst. She discusses her immersion in the world of cinema verité - "a camera capturing life" - as the pathway that brought her to train in psychoanalysis. We consider the similarities and differences between these ways of thinking and how she feels that for her, they are additive in deepening her listening abilities. She describes her films of Beatrice Beebe's work, how she serves as a consultant to filmmakers, and how she often treats those in the field, especially in regard to their (over)involvement with trauma. We close with Karen's recommendations for using YouTube to let the wider community know about psychoanalysis. Our Guest: Karen Dougherty is a Psychoanalyst (FIPA) and documentary filmmaker. She has an MA in English Literature (McGill) and an MA in Psychoanalytic Studies (University of Sheffield). She is a clinical supervisor and course instructor at the FPP and the Advanced Training Program in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, with a particular focus on attachment, relationship issues, and trauma. In addition to her private practice in rural Amaranth, Ontario, Karen is the host of the podcast for the Canadian Psychoanalytic Society, Conversations in Psychoanalysis. Since 2022, she has been a member of the IPA Think Tank on the Resolution of Intractable Conflict, for which she produces a YouTube Channel. The recipient of a PEPweb video grant, she has made several films on the research of Dr. Beatrice Beebe for clinicians and parents. She continues to collaborate on documentary projects as a researcher and story consultant (recent films include Toxic Beauty; Category: Woman, both directed by Phyllis Ellis). Bridging these two careers, Karen is both a communications consultant for psychoanalytic organizations and a mental health consultant for film and television. The Center for Change reports that young girls view between 400 and 600 images a day. The average woman has at least one "body-hatred" thought a day, and a recent survey shows that less than 2% of women worldwide would describe themselves as beautiful. Melissa Johnson, licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Spiritual Director, and author of Soul Deep Beauty, sits down with Rebecca Carrell and Liz Rodriguez to talk about the lies woven through the diet, health, and beauty industry and how marketers have created standards that almost no woman meets. Send us a Text Message.“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” or so they say. But, honestly that's just not true. For all of known history beauty has been defined by society, not the beholder, and the standards have been set unattainably high. Pale and plump, tan and thin, long hair, now short hair, curly hair, straight hair, big hair, no hair, thick eyebrows, thin eyebrows, thick again, thin again, short, now tall, black teeth, no white teeth. Ever changing, swinging like a pendulum, back and forth, and ever harder and harder to actually achieve. But did you know our desperation to somehow reach these impossible standards has led us to, quite literally, poison ourselves throughout history? Let's fix that. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Barri Cohen, Award-Winning Documentary Filmmaker, “UNLOVED - HURONIA'S FORGOTTEN CHILDREN” About Harvey's guest: Today's guest, Barri Cohen, is an award-winning filmmaker, best known for documentaries focusing on health, mental health, environmental and social justice issues. Some of her best known works include her feature documentary entitled, “Toxic Trespass: Children's Health & The Environment”, “Toxic Beauty” and “Girls Night Out”. Her latest film adds to the recent revelations here in Canada, of brutal legacies of neglect, abuse, violence and the trauma inflicted on our most vulnerable citizens. We know about the tragic and horrendous plight of Indigenous children in residential schools. We've learned what's happened to many children at the hands of Catholic priests. We've heard about the treatment of elderly people isolated in nursing homes. And now, thanks to our guest, we're learning about the shameful and horrific treatment of disabled, institutionalized children, in her multi-award winning documentary entitled, “UNLOVED - HURONIA'S FORGOTTEN CHILDREN”. The movie takes us on an intensely personal journey of the filmmaker's quest to uncover the mystery of what happened to her 2 long-deceased, intellectually disabled half-brothers, who were rarely talked about, after they were institutionalized in the 1950's at a government run facility in Orillia, Ontario, first opened in 1876, and called the “Ontario Hospital School”. It was neither a hospital nor a school. In 1945, it was renamed the Huronia Regional Center, and it operated until it was finally closed in 2009, after having held captive, tens of thousands of vulnerable children and youth, who suffered dehumanizing treatment. That institution forms part of the immense tragedy of Canada's, and the 20th century's, disastrous treatment of intellectually disabled children. In the film we meet a number of survivors who speak frankly about the physical, emotional and sexual abuse and trauma they endured, and the landmark class action lawsuit they brought against the Ontario government, which was finally settled in 2013. The film, written and directed by our guest, will be televised in Canada on the CBC network on Sunday January 29, and will then be available on CBC GEM. Our guest was the co-chair and a founding member of the Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival. She was the National Executive Chair of the Documentary Organization of Canada. And she's the former editor and publisher, and currently a columnist, at Point of View Magazine. And if that weren't enough, she's currently studying psychoanalysis.
