In this episode my guest is a woman who has a deep understanding of how the beauty industry works and feeds into modern culture. Ellen Atlanta is a writer and brand consultant specialising in Gen-Z and Millennial culture and has worked with beauty giants including Estee Lauder, Boots, FeelUnique, Milk Makeup, Flannels Beauty and The Unseen Beauty. Her latest project has seen her become the author of one of the most important books that I've read in a long time. Pixel Flesh is an honest, scary and at times shocking observation of the toxic side of beauty and the online world:"We are living in a new age of beauty. With advancements in cosmetic surgery, augmented reality face filters, photo editing apps, and exposure to more images than ever, we have the ability to craft a version of ourselves that we want everyone to see. We pinch, pull, squeeze, tweeze, smooth and slice ourselves beyond recognition. But is our beauty culture truly empowering? Are we really in control? In Pixel Flesh, Ellen Atlanta holds a mirror up to our modern beauty ideal and the harm it is doing to women all around the world. Weaving in her own personal story with those of other women, she reconfigures our obsession with the cult of beauty and explores the realities of living in a digitally obsessed world where the pressure to present yourself both virtually and in person is all-consuming."During the episode we explore many of the themes in Ellen's book and have a really honest chat about the challenges that so many of us face when it comes to how we perceive and present ourselves to the world. We also look at the empowering and positive side of beauty and how when used in the right way it can build communities and make us feel increible.I hope you enjoy this thought provoking episode and that it sparks a debate about the highs and lows of being a woman in 2024.

When Makeup Artist and On-Air Beauty Expert Neil Scibelli says that he feels like he has already lived several lifetimes, we can understand why: from hosting a radio show in 3rd grade, auditioning for Tony Bennett in junior high school, to talking his way into a job at Fresh Skin Care- he has clearly shown persistence and a passion for the entertainment and makeup industries. We loved chatting with Neil about his journey to becoming a well-respected on-air personality, often seen on Good Morning America- where one of his earliest gigs was doing makeup for Beyoncé's dancers and band! But every day is different in the entertainment industry and Neil makes a great point when he talks about always showing up for yourself because as a freelancer, you don't know where the job will take you next. "The people that tell you not to go after your dreams and not to dream big are the people that gave up their dreams and settled for less." - Berlin Fisher This Real Talk is a clarion call to anybody pursuing their authentic vision – don't give up; keep going! On this episode, I had the privilege of chatting with the dynamic Berlin Fisher – Master Stylist, NBC California Live Beauty Expert Contributor and “The Bad Boy of Beauty.” Some of the core topics we discuss in this episode are: Personal Growth and Self-Reflection Teachable Moments and Open Dialogues Pursuing Artistic Dreams Importance of Personal Care Power of Sobriety Berlin captivates with his life story. He shares his journey that involves overcoming personal struggles, fighting against societal norms, and going after his artistic dreams despite the odds. He also discusses how his sobriety has been pivotal in reshaping his life and his approach to creativity. One of my favorite moments from this Real Talk is Berlin's concept of “Surrender to win.” He explains the importance of “laying down the sword” – letting go of the need to fight and instead embracing acceptance and openness. This kind of surrender can lead to personal victories, and ultimately, impactful growth. If you're a creative go-getter who has encountered tough challenges along the way of pursuing your heart's calling, then you'll find this episode incredibly encouraging! Berlin's wisdom on self-development and paving our own paths is inspiring, and can be applied to our lives. With so much love & gratitude, Grace

On this episode of A Fresh Story, we chatted with medical esthetician and skin care influencer Cassandra Bankson. We discussed everything from the impact of childhood bullying on your adult life, her modeling career, her journey to heal her skin, and the importance of finding your authentic community. It was a beautiful, vulnerable, and honest conversation about starting fresh in our personal journey, relationships, and feeling at home in our own skin. Cassandra Bankson is a medical esthetician and skin care influencer who is at the forefront of social media, the Skincare Community and the Skin Positivity Movement. As a former sufferer of acne herself, she is an expert on acne recovery and the psycho-social implications that connect our mental health and skin. Cassandra often challenges mainstream ideas about skincare and beauty by providing scientific information to her followers. On her YouTube channel, Cassandra has done thousands of reviews of skincare products, especially for those with oily skin and acne. Bankson's platform conveys that skincare should be a journey to skin positivity and self-love rather than a fight for flawless skin. She is known for being a source of encouragement, and she concentrates on building a community around those who have skin complications. Her content aims to empower her audience against exploitation by educating them about skincare ingredients and problematic marketing tactics. She also actively publishes written narratives of community members, works with charities to give back to the community, and has pioneered skin scholarship programs to empower those in need to get an education, care, and treatment when it would otherwise be difficult to do so. Forbes magazine has called her a “Rising Woman Of Power,” Allure Magazine has called her a “Skincare and Beauty Expert.” She has won numerous awards and honors for her work, including “Best Ad Campaign” from Adweek along with an “Inspiration” from Good Morning America. “It's positioned as empowering for the consumer to ‘do their research' on ingredient lists, but I actually think it ends up being disempowering. You need an advanced degree in chemistry to keep up with the ingredients, formulas, and latest research. How can we expect the average consumer to do that?” says Jaleh Bisharat, founder of beauty e-retailer NakedPoppy. “And unfortunately there's just not as much independent research as we need. There's a lot of data holes.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mindbodygreen beauty director and host Alexandra Engler chats with Bisharat about how machine learning can improve the beauty shopping experience, why the consumer shouldn't need to be “armchair chemists” to shop smarter, and leaving the world a little more beautiful than you found it. Inspired by style icons such as Versace and Oscar De La Renta, she realized how powerful fashion could be and became determined to style the world in bold yet classy pieces.
