Carefully Examining the Text

Psalm 121There are some connections with Psalm 91. The idea of shade or shadow in 121:5; 91:1. The word keep in 121:3, 4, 5, 7, 7, 8 is also in 91:11. The word foot is used in 121:3 and 91:12 McCann, 1181. The name LORD appears in vs. 2, 5, 5, 7, 8.121:1 From whence shall my help come?- The word help is m.s. and is used of God in Exodus 18:4; Deut. 33:7, 26, 29; Ps. 20:2; 33:20; 115:9, 10, 11; 121; 1, 2; 124:8; 146:5. The f.s. form is used in Ps. 40:13, 17; 44:26; 46:1; 108:12. “The question exposes his anxiety and sense of inadequacy” Laymen, 687. 121:2 My help comes from the LORD,Who made heaven and earth- Ps. 115:15; 124:8; 134:3; Jer. 32:17 The verb made is used 12 times in Gen. 1-2 to speak of God's creation of all things. “The thought of this verse leaps beyond the hills to the universe; beyond the universe to its Maker. Here is living help: primary, personal, wise, immeasurable” Kidner, 431. 121:4 Behold, He who keeps Israel- “Protection is a burning issue for a pilgrim who is travelling arduously and through lonely country” Kidner, 431. will neither slumber not sleep- contrast I Kings 18:27. The word slumber is repeated from vs. 3. “God is ever vigilant” Longman, 414. “This sentry never dozes on duty!” Laymen, 687. “In all paths of life, he is promised the ever-vigilant protection of God” Allen, 154. 121:6 The sun will not smite you by day- Gen. 1:16 The word smite is a word that often indicates to strike with violence- Gen. 4:15; Ex. 2:11, 12; 12:12. Sunstroke is “a real danger in the semi-desert climate of the Land of Israel” Alter, 438. “By day and by night are frequently used to mean ‘always' or ‘constantly' (cf. Pss. 22:2; 88:1)” Miller, 398. Ps. 91:5-6; II Kings 4:18-19; Isa. 49:10; Jonah 4:8; Rev. 7:16.121:7 The LORD will protect you for all evil- Ps. 41:2; 91:10-12 “In light of other scriptures, to be kept from all evil does not imply a cushioned life, but a well-armed one. Cf. Psalm 23:4, which expects the dark valley but can face it” Kidner, 432.  121:8 The LORD will guard your going out and coming in- Num. 27:17; Deut. 28:6; 31:2 This “is not only a way of saying ‘everything': in closer detail it draws attention to one's ventures and enterprises (cf. Ps. 126:6). Jesus and Psalm 121121:2 Jesus is Creator of Heaven and earth- John 1:1-3, 10; Col 1:16121:1, 2 This particular form of the word help is only used twice in the NT- Acts 27:17 for the supporting cables under the boat. Heb. 4:16 He gives grace to help in time of need.121:3 The One who not let Israel's feet slumber has His feet nailed to the cross- Luke 24:39-40.121:3-4 Matt. 8:24; Mk. 4:38; Lk. 8:23 Jesus sleeping on the boat though not the same Greek word. 121:3, 5, 7, 7, 8 The word for God guarding or keeping His people is the word from the LXX for Jesus guarding His disciples- John 17:12; Gal. 6:13; II Thess. 3:3; II Tim. 1:12; Jude 24.

We've made it! We started covering Luton Town in the fourth tier of English football back in 2017/18 and now, as the longest-running Hatters podcast, we begin season 7 as the only one-club football show to have gone from League Two to the Premier League.  On this episode we preview our first-ever season in the Premier League, talk transfers after a summer in which Town had signed, broken their transfer record three times and added eight new recruits (at the time of recording, but it's now nine) with Ross Barkley of ex Everton, Chelsea and England international fame added to the squad a few hours before we recorded.  We discuss the new rules that will be brought in this season, including the introduction of World Cup time-keeping and players approaching referees.  And we touch on the first game, the Premier League curtain-raiser away to Brighton and Hove Albion, but more on that in our next match preview podcast.   To celebrate our town, our club and our pod's own little piece of history, and a return to the big time after 31 years away we've had a Premier League glow-up, with brand-new retro style Panini sticker-inspired artwork, a new podcast logo (thanks to Ed Smith) and a new, old-school theme tune (courtesy of Seán Grant and the Wolfgang).... and that's just the start. We've got a few more tricks up our sleeves and we can't wait to reveal them to you. But for the first time, this term, WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE! **************************************************************** Check out Ed Smith Creative at: www.edsmithcreative.co.uk Check out Seán Grant and the Wolfgang at: https://linktr.ee/sgwolfgang

In this episode, we took in a double feature of The Core (2003) and Sunshine (2007), a pair of movies where nuclear weapons are deployed to locations far away from the Earth's surface to save humanity. How could nukes respin the Earth's core or reignite the sun? How does the role of “nukes as heroes” jive with the usual “nukes, aren't those the baddies?” themes? Why does Cillian Murphy keep getting typecast as “tortured inventor of a weapon of mass destruction”: Robert Capa, J. Robert Oppenheimer, and Scarecrow? Only Three Lads - Classic Alternative Music Podcast

Hey, hep cats!  This week, we celebrate our "homer picks" - the classic alternative era artists and bands from our respective areas who made an impact on us.  Uncle Gregg is representing "the Valley of the Sunstroke," Phoenix, AZ, while Brett is bringing eternal sunshine from the paradise of San Diego, CA.  Plus, we share the picks from some of the "Third Lads" of the O3L Community around the world.  There's no place like home!   We also host the inaugural O3L Poetry Slam, talk new music, Kardashians, moms, eating pet food, TikTok, awkward pauses, and other stuff that doesn't really have much to do with hometown heroes.     Our O3L Spotlight Artist of the Week is the classic UK indie pop band The Chesterfields.  38 years since they formed in Yeovil, Somerset, and 28 years since their last record release, The Chesterfields are back in July 2022 with a new single “Our Songbird Has Gone”, a song that founder member Simon Barber has written about his original co-conspirator in the band Dave Goldsworthy, who was tragically killed in a hit and run accident in 2003.  A new album New Modern Homes (co-produced and mixed by John Parish, who produced The Chesterfields' debut Kettle in 1987) will follow in September, with gigs to be announced for a short tour in October. The current line-up features Simon on bass and vocals, Rob Parry on drums, Helen Stickland on guitar and vocals, and Andy Strickland (of The Loft and The Caretaker Race) on guitar and vocals.

Radio International - The Ultimate Eurovision Experience is broadcast from Malta's Radio 105FM on Tuesday evenings from 2100 - 2359 hours CET. The show is also broadcast on Castlepoint FM in the United Kingdom live on Wednesday evenings from 2000 - 2300 hours CET as well as on the Facebook Page of Eurovision Radio International with an interactive chatroom.  Interview with Sunstroke Project (Moldova 2010 and 2017):  The Municipality of Setubal in Portugal every year arrange for a great Eurovision event in the the centre of the city inviting many international and national Eurovision artists for the Eurovision Live Concert. This was also the case at the most recent one in September 2019. Amongst the invited guests was also The Sunstroke Project who represented Moldova twice at the Eurovision Song Contest 2010 with the song "Run Away" aided by Olia Tira. The song qualified for the Grand Final and then ended up at Number 21. They seven years on Sunstroke Project returned to the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 in Kiev when they bettered their 2010 success with climbing all the way up to Number 3 in the Grand Final with the song "Hey Mamma".   Normally, JP interviews the artists in the environment of the venue but this is a rather unusual interview as it was done during an excursion in the vicinity of Setubal at the beach. Enjoy this lively fun interview JP did with the Sunstroke Project. During the live show on Wednesday evening (2000 - 2300 hours CET) we enjoyed a very active chatroom resulting that many requests were also played on the show this week. Then there is the Eurovision Birthday File, the Eurovision Cover Spot, the Eurovision Spotlight, the Eurovision Calendar Update and Eurovision News courtesy of escXtra.com. Plus the best selection of great Eurovision music and new releases by Eurovision artists. Tessa Hadley is the author of six highly praised novels, Accidents in the Home, which was longlisted for the Guardian First Book Award, Everything Will Be All Right, The Master Bedroom, The London Train, Clever Girl and The Past, and three collections of stories, Sunstroke, Married Love and Bad Dreams. The Past won the Hawthornden Prize for 2016, and Bad Dreams won the 2018 Edge Hill Short Story Prize. She lives in London and is Professor of Creative Writing at Bath Spa University. Her stories appear regularly in the New Yorker and other magazines. Alexandr and Christine and Zachary and Lydia have been close friends since they first met in their twenties. Thirty years later Alex and Christine are spending a leisurely summer evening at home when they receive a call from a distraught Lydia. Zach is dead. In the wake of this profound loss, the three friends find themselves unmoored; all agree that Zach was the sanest and kindest of them all, the irreplaceable one they couldn't afford to lose. Inconsolable, Lydia moves in with Alex and Christine. But instead of loss bringing them closer, the three of them find over the following months that it warps their relationships, as old entanglements and grievances rise from the past, and love and sorrow give way to anger and bitterness. Late in the Day explores the tangled webs at the centre of our most intimate relationships, to expose how beneath the seemingly dependable arrangements we make for our lives lie infinite alternate configurations. Ingeniously moving between past and present and through the intricacies of her characters' thoughts and interactions, Tessa Hadley once again shows that she has ‘become one of this country's great contemporary novelists. She is equipped with an armoury of techniques and skills that may yet secure her a position as the greatest of them.' (Anthony Quinn Guardian) Recorded 17 September 2019

The Binaural Banjo

I mentioned in my last post about the end of the lossless site that I was working on a lot of new ideas, and of course true to form here I am posting an episode that doesn't really incorporate any of them. But I got stuck on this new wave psychedelic guitar riff a couple weeks ago and decided to see how well I could mix it into a Binaural Banjo tune. There are some new things in here, actually. I've been wanting to work a rhythm section into more of what I do, which may not be the best choice for this podcast overall but for this tune I think it sounds okay. Because it's a bit more of a pop song and could stand to be listened to at regular volume I included a 30Hz binaural beat that should work with more active listening. The only thing to watch out for is the high droney parts, which have a kind of delay that I couldn't get rid of. It doesn't take away too much, but maybe should have reduced the gain a bit. Of course you're all welcome to comment.Includes artwork!Sunstroke
