Forget all your sorrows your cares and your labors, And let every heart beat with rapture today. Come, come one and all, attend to my call, And revel in pleasures that never can cloy. Come see rural felicity, Which love and innocence ever enjoy. Let Envy, Let Pride, Let Hate & Ambition, Still Crowd to, & beat at the breast of the Great, To Such Wretched Passions we Give no admission, But Leave them alone to the wise ones of State. We Boast of No wealth, but Contentment & Health, In mirth & in Friendship, our moments employ Come see rural felicity, Which love and innocence ever enjoy. With Reason we taste of Each Heart Stirring pleasure, With Reason we Drink of the full flowing Bowl, Are Jocund & Gay, But 'tis all within measure, For fatal excess will enslave the free Soul, Then Come at our bidding to this Happy wedding, No Care Shall obtrude here, our Bliss to annoy, Come see rural felicity, Which love and innocence ever enjoy. To work his two best horses, barrow, cart or plow Or any kind of good farmwork he knew well that I could do. He had a lovely daughter, and her name was Isabel, She was the lily of the valley and the primrose of the dell. And when she'd go out walking she'd take me for her guide; Down by the banks of Cairnie we watched those small fish glide. And when three short months had gone and passed, this lassie lost her bloom. And the red fell from her rosy cheeks, and her eyes began to swoon. And when nine long months had gone and passed, she bore to me a son, And swiftly I was sent for to see what could be done. I said that I would marry her, but och, that would not dee, Saying, “You're no match for Isabelle, and she's no match for thee.” So I took my own son all in my arms, may he bring to me much joy, And may he mean as much to me as the girl that I adore. And now she's married to a tinker lad and he comes from Huntly town, Mending pots and pans and paraffin lamps and he scours the country 'round. Maybe she's got have a better match, old Bogie can't tell, Fare ye well, you lads o' Huntly side and Bogie's Bonnie Belle." is the Colour Of My True Love's Hair (Mark Mulholland / IMRO; Kyf Brewer / Brewerds&Music / ASCAP) Well when I was just a young lad, my life about to start There was ever only one girl had a place inside my heart We walked the glen, we climbed the Ben, the forest was our bed, And many a morn I'd wake to find me kilt across her head And I been up and I been down and I been here and I been there Never saw a bonny lassie quite as comely or as fair You can talk of pretty maidens and I don't bloody care Cause tartan is the colour of my true love's hair We walked the bonnie highlands, no matter what the weather And we'd shag each other senseless in the bonnie purple heather ŒTil one day we were frolicking and as my true love laughed, She fell into the workings of an old disused mineshaft And I been up and I been down and I been here and I been there Never saw a bonny lassie quite as comely or as fair You can talk of pretty maidens and I don't bloody care Cause tartan is the colour of my true love's hair Well I never have recovered from that sad, sad, sorry day So I left my native land for the shores of Amerikay And many a man has made remark about me ancient dress But I wear it in remembrance of the girl it e'er first kissed And I been up and I been down and I been here and I been there Never saw a bonny lassie quite as comely or as fair You can talk of pretty maidens and I don't bloody care Cause tartan is the colour of my true love's hair" Mary Mack performed by Queen Ann's Lace from the album Unlaced www.QALace.com "Mary Mack There's a little girl and her name is Mary Lover's Wreck performed by Cheeks and Phoenix from the album Any Requests www.cheeksandphoenix.com """Lover's_Wreck A hundred days at sea, A retch away from misery Rummies and rats and tarry jacks my only family (break) The island of salvation Is still a scream a way As the lungs of the night Blow out the light my heart kneels Down to pray (strait into chorus) Lord why did you take her She meant so much to me Now I’m a wretched soul on a privateer Drowning out at sea I’m killing and I’m drinking My blue heart to black But I swear oh lord I’ll never sin again If you bring her back Gypsy was a siren, Dripping with desire Her moonless hair and skin so fair as warm as frozen fire She had the loyalty of a cat, behind those pale green eyes Through her cherry lips, the devil slipped, a thousand lies A clan of rogues and vagabonds, occupied her head That thieving band took her pale white hand and stole her from my bed And like a ghost ship in the night, She drifted out once more To land upon the sand of another lover’s shore Lord why did you take her She meant so much to me Now I’m a wretched soul on a privateer Drowning out at sea I’m killing and I’m drinking My blue heart to black But I swear oh lord I’ll never sin again If you bring her back In my sleeping mind she sings a sad and lonely lullaby When I wake there’s just the ache it will haunt me till I die When those winds of vanity no longer blow her west I pray they’ll guide her home (across the foam) and put my heart to rest Press gang filled this Man-o-War To make the black mouthed cannon roar Now all my trade is ball and blade, and blood forever more And the sting of salt and spray, the ocean’s howl and squall A stumbling wreck, I roam the deck, at the devil’s beck and call At the devil’s beck and call Lord why did you take her She meant so much to me Now I’m a wretched soul on a privateer Drowning out at sea I’m killing and I’m drinking My blue heart to black But I swear oh lord I’ll never sin again If you bring her back I swear oh lord I’ll never sin again If you bring her back""" I Still Remember performed by Blackmore's Night from the album Fires At Midnight www.blackmoresnight.com "I thought of you Married to a Mermaid performed by Dregs from the album Do It Like You're Drunk www.the-dregs.net "Married_to_a_Mermaid There was a gay young farmer, Who liv'd on Salisbury plain; He lov'd a rich Knight's daughter dear! And she lov'd him again. The Knight he was distressed, That they should sweethearts be. So he had the farmer soon pressed, And sent him off to sea. Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves... 'Twas on the deep Atlantic, Midst Equinoctial gales; This young farmer fell overboard Among the sharks and whales; He disappeared so quickly, So headlong down went he, That he went out of sight Like a streak of light To the bottom of the deep blue sea. Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves... We lowered a boat to find him, We thought to see his corse, When up to the top he came with a bang, And sang in a voice so hoarse, 'My comrades and my messmates, Oh, do not weep for me, For I'm married to a mermaid, Atthe bottom of the deep blue sea.' Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves... He said that as he went down, Great fishes he did see; They seemed to think as he did wink, That he was rather free. But down he went so quickly, Saying, ""Tis all up with me, ' When he met a lovely mermaid Atthe bottom of the deep blue sea. Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves... She came at once unto him, And gave him her white hand, Saying, 'I have waited long, my dear, To welcome you to land. Go to your ship and tell them, You'll leave them all for me; For you're married to a mermaid At the bottom of the deep blue sea.' Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves... The wind was fair, the sails set, The ship was running free; When we all went to the captain bold, And told what we did see. He went unto the ship's side, And loudly bellowed he, 'Be happy as you can, my man, At the bottom of the deep blue sea.' Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves..."
"This is a great story today about Karen McGregor who had wanted a horse when she was four years old. I talked to her about this and was thrilled that she had spent countless nights falling asleep with thoughts of the top item on her wishlist to the point that her desire actually appeared in her dreams." Family Discussions: Are you ashamed of the gospel? How are you going to show today in your circumstances that you're not ashamed of the gospel? Have you ever felt ashamed or embarrassed to share your faith? If you have, what was it like? What prize would you sacrifice to share your love for Jesus? Transcription: 00:13 Well, it's a beautiful day in the Ozarks again, as it has been for the last 37 years. Ice, snow, whatever happens here, it's beautiful in the Ozarks. Today, we're in Romans chapter one, verse 16 and 17. A fantastic Bible verse. I love this verse. Paul is writing to the Romans and the world and he says this, "For I'm not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith. As it is written, the righteous man shall live by faith." This is a great story today about Karen McGregor who had wanted a horse when she was four years old. I talked to her about this and was thrilled that she had spent countless nights falling asleep with thoughts of the top item on her wishlist to the point that her desire actually appeared in her dreams. 01:09 Alast to a rural girl in Calgary, Alberta. Money didn't come easy, but as she saved her money in her piggy bank, the $1,500 needed for her purchase might as well have been $1 million. She had never beheld that kind of money, but her desire grew even stronger as she saved every penny she could muster working every odd job she was able. At the same moment she had achieved her financial goal to buy her dream horse. She coincidentally heard of a mission trip to San Jose, Bolivia. The only thing stronger than the desire to own her first horse was her desire to share the tremendous love for the one who had died to set her free from the penalty of her sins. The mission trip too had a price tag. The dilemma became painfully apparent. 01:57 One of the two had to go like so many other choices in life. She simply couldn't have both. After some time of intense prayer. You can imagine the anguish she went through. She had made her decision. The horse had to wait maybe even forever. The mission kids of Bolivia and her impressible desire to share Christ with them prevailed. And you know what? Bolivia will never be the same. Neither will Karen. And so it is with my friend Trace who just left a lucrative radio career to spend his life in Haiti with the beautiful people there ravaged by earthquakes and hurricanes and poverty. Their treasures are in Heaven. And I think they know that those are the greatest place in the world to store their treasures. 02:45 Here's a couple of questions for you today. Karen and Trace were not ashamed of the gospel. Are you? And how are you going to show today in your circumstances that you're not ashamed of the gospel? And the second question is this. Have you ever felt ashamed or embarrassed to share your faith? If you have, what was it like? And here's the biggest question of all today. What prize would you sacrifice to share your love for Jesus? Would it be your finances? Would it be your boyfriend? Would it be a bad relationship? Would it be your car? Sometimes there's a high price to share the gospel. Here's the lifeline for today. You know, shame brings timid, but love produces sacrifice.
In this episode, I read 70 scriptures on our identity in Christ with piano music in the background. So relax and reflect on your true identity in Christ. I also share a few minutes first before I start speaking the scriptures so I if you would like to start with the scripture reading with piano music go to the 6-minute mark and about 45 seconds in. Hi, everyone. Welcome to today's episode about our identity in Christ. Today, most of the scriptures I will be reading are in the New American Standard Bible. Some are King James Bible, some are New Living Translation, but there are about 70 verses that I'm going to read. And for me in my life, I read these every day, twice a day. And there was a season about a year ago that I was going through kind of a valley experience. And I was reading all 70 of these three times a day. And what's amazing is they're not even scriptures on healing, per se. They're more on who we are in Christ and our identity in Christ and what's amazing is they brought me out of that valley along with people and prayer and teaming up with people who prayed for me. But, you know, every day, I had to keep feeding myself the scriptures the word, and it was powerful. And you know, even Jesus focused on his identity. In Luke three, it tells us when John baptized Jesus, and then in verse 22, it says, the Holy Spirit descended upon him, in bodily form, like a dove and a voice came out of heaven, "Thou art my beloved Son, in thee I am well pleased." Then in Luke 4 Jesus for 40 days, being tempted by the enemy, and he ate nothing during those days. And when they had ended, he became hungry. The enemy said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread. And two things I want to point out that the very first temptation that the enemy gave Jesus was questioning if he was the Son of God, if he knew his identity, and I think if some of you think about it, that you've had that same temptation, wondering, are you really a daughter or a son of God? And the interesting thing is, that the enemy didn't say, Are you the beloved Son of God, which is what God told him before he went into the desert. He just said, Are you the Son of God? And then what did Jesus do? And all three temptations in Luke four that the enemy came at him with, He returned all three with scripture. And so I am such a word girl. I love the word of God. It's powerful. I've been healed by the word of God just reading the Word of God. It's, just alive and it's active. And God always knows what we need it when we need it. And so today I'm going to share these scriptures with you. And like I said, there are 70 verses, but again, I'm not going to read them, the addresses, you know the location of each verse, what I'm going to do is put those in the show notes and you can get a copy of that at my website gotbbb. And that's gotbbb.org. And you'll see all my podcast episodes. And then you'll be able to read the show notes right below the podcast episode. And so I'm going to just go ahead and start and bear with me if you hear some paper rustling because obviously there's a lot of verses and I had to print them out so it'd be easy to read to you. But just sit back and just relax. And just listen to these verses of who you are in Christ because of what Jesus did on the cross. And how God sees us and who we are to God and our relationship to God all because of what Jesus did for us. And because we're in him, and they're in us, all these things are true. And some of these verses I will be saying are just like, really amazing. And almost like, really like, Wow. I mean, like, you could study one verse for a whole week to get the understanding and the full meaning of it. But for right now, I just want to share these scriptures with you because they've been so powerful in my own life. And I know that they can bless you. So we're going to start with Romans three, verse 24. But that'll be the last time I give you the verse therein, from now on, I'll just be reading. Romans 3:24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Colossians 1:21b yet now has He reconciled Colossians 1:22 His body on the cross, to present us holy and unblameable and unreproveable in His sight. Matthew 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:13 Now the God of hope fills you with all joy and peace and believing that you may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 5:5 And hope makes not ashamed, because the love of God is in our hearts by the Holy Spirit which is given to me. Ephesians 1:13 In Him, you also after listening to the truth message, the gospel of your salvation, having also believed you are sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise. 1 Corinthians 2:12b But the Holy Spirit who is from God, given to us that we might realize and comprehend and appreciate the gifts. I have divine favor and blessing so freely given to us and bestowed on us by God. 2 Corinthians 6:18 I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to Me says, the Lord Almighty. 1 Corinthians 3:21b-23 For all things belong to you and you belong to Christ and Christ belongs to God. 2 Corinthians 5:17-21 summary - Through Christ, he made all-new, now all these things are from God, who brought us close to himself through Jesus. We became the righteousness of God in Jesus. 2 Peter 1:2-4 Grace and peace be multiplied to you and the knowledge of God and Jesus our Lord, seeing that his divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life, through the true knowledge of Him, who called us by his own glory and excellence, for by these he has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you become partakers of the divine nature. Romans 3:24 Being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Jesus. John 17:23b You love them, even as you love Me. John 1:1-4 summary - In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God, and all things came into being by him. In him was life and the life was the light of men. John 1:14-18 summary - The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, glory as of the only begotten son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John said, "This is the one whom I told you. He who comes is a higher rank for he existed before me, for of his fullness we have all received and grace upon grace." Grace and truth were realized through Jesus and Jesus came to explain God to us. Romans 14:17 summary - The kingdom of God is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:4b,5,9 In love, he pre-planned us to adoption as sons and daughters, through Jesus Christ to himself according to the kind intentions of his will. He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which he purposed in him, Jesus. Ephesians 1:7-8 In Him, Jesus, we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, which he lavished upon us. In all wisdom and insight, he made known to us the mystery of his will. Ephesians 1:2,3,6 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ. To the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the beloved. 1 Corinthians 2:12b-13 the Holy Spirit given to us from God, that we may know the things freely given to us by God, which things we also speak, not in words taught by man or human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. 1 Corinthians 2:4-5 My message and preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of power that your faith should not rest in the wisdom of man, but on the power of God. 1 Corinthians 2:10 For to us, God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even to the depths of God. John 14:26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in Jesus name, He will teach you all things and bring back to your remembrance all that I said to you. John 15:9-11 Just as the Father has loved me, I have also loved you, abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love just as I kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love. I have spoken these things to you, that your joy be made full. Ephesians 2:8 By grace, you have been saved through faith and not of ourselves. It is the gift of God. Ephesians 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory may give to you a Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. Mom and I - circa mid 1970’s It’s about as important of a question as they come. Who is my family? It seems synonymous to another question: Where do I belong? Apparently Jesus instinctively paired them together as recorded in the twelfth chapter of Mathew, verses forty-six through fifty. While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”damn, jesus, that’s cold!I’ve written elsewhere about my close connection with my mother. While it is not universally true, there does seem to be a special connection between mothers and their sons just as there often is between fathers and their daughters. I can certainly attest to both. When it comes to the former, that is what makes these supposed words of Jesus all the more shocking. Certainly by all biblical accounts, Mary and Jesus did not have a cold and distant relationship. Mary is portrayed as having both a warm affection and subtle reverence for her son as a young child (Luke 2:19). And Jesus, even while in the deepest of agony while he hung on the cross, was so committed to his mother that he took time to appoint a disciple to care for her in view of his immanent death (John 19:25-27).And yet on another occasion when informed that his mom, along with his brothers, were waiting outside and wanted to speak to him, Jesus basically told the crowd that his gang of often clueless disciples were more family than the woman who gave birth to him and raised him! I mean, damn, Jesus, that’s cold! He goes on to clarify that what qualifies someone as a member of his family is if they do “the will of the Father”. But wasn’t the very fact that she was his mother based on an angelic declaration of God’s favor on her life (Luke 1:30)? Isn’t it fair to assume that said favor is based, at least in part, on a fair amount of effort on Mary’s part to follow a righteous path? But none of that mattered now in this moment for Jesus and Mary. On that day, Mary and her other children wouldn’t receive from Jesus even the attention commonly provided to distant relatives.the loss of familyWhat caused Jesus to be so harsh? Well we get a hint in another passage in the book of Mark (3:21), where we learn that apparently the fever pitch of Jesus’ self-ascribing Messianic talk had gotten too extreme for the family, even though Mary was given plenty of advance warning about Jesus’ unique, God-ordained mission (Luke 1:32-33). According to Mark, Mary and Jesus’ brothers thought he was “out of his mind”. Well I am NO Jesus, believe you me! But in this story I find some sense of a shared experience and therefore some fellowship with this man from nearly 2,000 years ago. The last few years have been very hard because I have grieved the loss of so many loved ones, not from physical death but by a separation of conscience and will. This has included literal blood relatives along with those who I had thought were fellow ‘brothers and sisters’ in God’s family, the Church. Having grown up in a devout Christian home, these two families were very intertwined. I recall singing both in my house and at church on Sundays the Bill and Gloria Gaither contemporary hymn, Family of God. The chorus goes like this…I'm so glad I'm a part of the Family of God,I've been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood!Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,For I'm part of the family,The Family of God.But now many in both my literal and my supposedly spiritual family seem estranged. I look at them and think, ‘I don’t even know who you are!’ And to be fair, I know they are thinking the same. The cause of this divorce? We have a shockingly different understanding of ‘the will of the Father’. I am convinced that many of them think that God’s will is synonymous with the idols of which I have previously written about. Their patriarch and prophet is now Donald Trump. In contrast, I had one of my former pastors say that my conclusions about evangelicalism were either “brilliant or crazy”, and it was clear by the tone of the conversation that he was strongly leaning towards crazy. Either way, the end result is the same: we’ve drifted apart as we pursue two diametrically opposed agendas.finding new familyAnd yet among the loss, I have much to celebrate! For I have found new family members I never knew existed. Or perhaps I knew they existed but they were, you know, ‘those people’ that needed the saving. Curiously it turns out that they are more eagerly practicing the kind of unconditional love I was told was supposed to be a central conviction and way of life with my former family. So my new ‘brothers and sisters’ are the likes of liberal atheists, members of the LGBT community, and Muslim refugees, whether they live next door or half a world away. To them I say thank you. I am cherishing our new fellowship and growing every day as I am inspired by your courage and strength. And above all, I am exceedingly honored to be called your ‘brother’.
