Awake Us Now
Forty Plus Ten - Week 1: Peace!

Awake Us Now

Scripture: Acts 1:3, Luke 24:36-47, John 14:27, Philippians 4:7. What does the sermon series "Forty Pus Ten" mean? There were forty days from Jesus' resurrection to His ascension. Pastor will focus on the convincing proofs of Jesus resurrection demonstrated in what Jesus' final words and actions during the forty days and will show us how they still speak to our lives today. There were ten days from Jesus' ascension to the Day of Pentecost. Pastor will focus on what happened on Pentecost and what that means for our Christian walk and daily lives. Jesus lives!  This is the most important event of the planet since creation! Join us and see why! Our study for today is on the evening of Jesus' resurrection. They are experiencing fear, confusion and uncertainty. They've heard some of the stories going around that Jesus was alive and risen from the grave but just days earlier they had seen Him arrested, crucified, put to death and placed in a tomb. They were not expecting a resurrection! On Resurrection Sunday morning the tomb had been found empty. As they gathered together in fear in a locked room, there was also confusion. They had heard the reports of people seeing and talking to Jesus.  There was uncertainty - how could this be true? And then, “While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.'” Luke 24:36 How is this story relevant for us today? All of us has encountered fear and Jesus speaks to us, just as He spoke to His followers that day: “Peace” Shalom. He spoke into their fears, confusion and uncertainties and He speaks Peace to each of us into our lives to our fear, confusions and uncertainties. Jesus goes on and says why are you troubled? Why do doubts rise in your minds and then He shows them His hands and feet. In effect saying that it really is Him!  He tells them to touch Him and then He eats food - He's in the flesh, He is alive. He goes on to tell them how all that is written about Him in the Old Testament must be fulfilled and as He continues it begins to become clear to their minds - Jesus opens their mind explaining the what the Scripture declared all along has been about Him. Then He goes on to say what's ahead, “He told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” Luke 24:46-47 What this means for us today - because Jesus is alive it changes everything and it changes each one of us! It changes:     ⁃    How we look at life     ⁃    The way we handle difficulties, fears, uncertainty, doubts and troubles     ⁃    The way we look at the future     ⁃    What matters in life It gives us:     ⁃    A reason for living     ⁃    True living - forever! Application     ⁃    The call is personal to encounter Jesus Christ. To encounter Him and His Peace     ⁃    We are called to heed the scriptures and to listen to them. As we listen - He comes into our hearts     ⁃    We are called to experience a new mind - the Holy Spirit changes us from within. Jesus is ALIVE!  His resurrection is not only the most significant event in the history of the world, it is the most important thing in each of our lives.  No matter what we are going through - the fact that He is alive and that we by faith receive what He offers: forgiveness, hope, assurance and life forever —- that changes everything! Pastor closes with the words from the chorus of a song from Bill and Gloria Gaither. Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
 Because He lives, all fear is gone;
 Because I know He holds the future,
 And life is worth the living,
 Just because He lives! Life is worth living, just because He lives!!! Now What? Learn about God at https://www.awakeusnow.com EVERYTHING we offer is FREE. In 1971, a man from central Indiana penned the lyrics of a gospel song called, "Because He Lives." When Bill and Gloria Gaither first sang the lyrics, "Because He lives, I can face tomorrow," they were echoing the belief and hope of centuries of Jesus followers. Because of Jesus, we have hope that things are actually gonna be okay. But how does Jesus show us that truth, and how do we do offer the same for others? Let's get up close and personal and see what we discover.

What if the key to overcoming life's challenges lies in the transformative power of a name? On today's episode of "Starting Right with Danny Mac," we explore the profound impact of music and the name of Jesus through the lens of two inspiring songs performed by Maverick City Music and Tauren Wells. These songs, "There's Something About That Name" by Bill and Gloria Gaither and "All My Hope" by David Crowder, though penned decades apart, resonate with a shared message of salvation and redemption. With references to scriptures like Philippians 2:9-11 and Acts 4:12, we reflect on how the name of Jesus embodies peace, healing, and hope for us all.Here is the youtube link today's songs.                                            https://youtu.be/dAZHom9775kWe would love to hear your comments. Thought For Today

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is 1st of May, Wednesday morning, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in the Book of Habakkuk 3:18: “Yet I will rejoice in the Lord,I will joy in the God of my salvation.”Then we go straight to Nehemiah 8:10. We all know that verse: “…for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” Now, you might say to me this morning, “What is there to be joyful about?” Well, let's start with our salvation, because He has saved you and me from a terrible life of bondage to the devil. He has set us free! He has covered us with a robe of righteousness; He has hidden our shame; He has clothed us with garments of salvation. That's right, yes, a new beginning. He has given you and me a brand new life. You know that scripture in Isaiah 61:3? He has given us a garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Folks, this joy that the Lord is speaking to us about is not a feeling, it's a fact. We don't have to walk around with a big smile on our face all the time and be happy all the time. It's a deep knowing that if we have to die today we are going home to be with Jesus, not because we are good people but because He is a Good God, and He loves us and we have acknowledged Him as our Lord and Saviour. It is a guarantee. For us to live is Christ and to die is but gain - that is what Paul, the Apostle said. I want to say to you today, it is the joy of the Lord.We need to praise God because when we praise Him, that is what takes that spirit of heaviness off us. Do you remember that song which the Gaither's wrote, Bill and Gloria Gaither? It's a song that has gone right around the world so many times. Early in the morning, on a Wednesday morning, there are men who get together in our little chapel on the farm, and we sing together, and this is one of the favourite songs that the boys love to sing, and I want you to sing it with me. It goes like this - Because He lives, that's right, I can face tomorrow:Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,Because He lives, all fear is gone;And because I know, yes I know, He holds the future,And life is worth the living,Just because He lives!Now come on, all together:Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,Because He lives, all fear is gone;And because I know, yes I know, He holds the future,And life is worth the living,Just because He lives!Go out now and praise the Lord because He lives.God bless you and goodbye.

In this intimate, long-form conversation, Bill and Gloria Gaither reflect on their 55-year, international Christan music ministry, from writing gospel songs in their Indiana living room to singing for millions across the globe. Hear how they fell in love over poetry, and how “the stewardship of fusing words” is still core to their ministry. They also tell the origin stories of beloved Gaither songs like “Because He Lives” and “There Just Something About that Name,” and reflect on the influence of their ministry on other Christian music artists like Sandi Patty and Michael W. Smith. Since 1962 Bill and Gloria Gaither have been writing, recording, publishing, and performing some of the world’s most cherished music. Their collaboration has resulted in more than 700 popular gospel songs, eight Grammy Awards, and more than two dozen Dove Awards from The Gospel Music Association, including eight “Songwriter of the Year” titles. Bill and Gloria are still writing and touring today.

The trio was initially a family group consisting of siblings Bill Gaither, Danny Gaither, and Mary Ann Gaither.After Mary Ann married, Bill's wife Gloria Gaither joined the group. Danny moved to Portsmouth, Ohio and joined the Golden Keys, another part-time group after graduating from college, but he returned to the trio in 1966.During the period of Danny's absence, the trio recorded at least two full length recordings featuring Bill, Gloria and Mary Ann. After Danny returned, at least two more recordings were made featuring the original lineup of Bill, Danny and Mary Ann.After Mary Ann left the second time, Sherry Slattery and Betty Fair performed with the group. Gloria returned in 1968. Their group was identified as "The Bill Gaither Trio With Gloria" on 1968's I'm Free. Fair left after making one more recording with the trio.Bill and Gloria balanced their musical efforts with their day jobs as school teachers until 1967. Once they decided to make music their full-time careers, success came quickly.Their recording, Alleluia sold over 250,000 units. By the 1970s, they were frequent guests at Billy Graham's crusades.The Gaither Trio's songs succeeded due to their message driven lyrics rather than showy performance techniques. Their inspirational ballads included songs written by the Gaithers like He Touched Me and The King Is Coming. These original songs were also frequently recorded by Southern Gospel groups of all types.By the time Danny Gaither left the group in 1977 and was replaced by Gary McSpadden, Bill and Gloria had begun to tour with an entourage of performers. Although Bill formed the all male Gaither Vocal Band in 1980, the trio continued to perform as well, typically with one of the Vocal Band members filling the lead singer role.Gary McSpadden left the trio in late 1988. The last recordings made by the trio featured Michael English at lead.Playlist:Artists | Song Title | Album01. The Bill Gaither Trio - Get all excited - "Our Recollections"02. Meus ossos secaram. Minhas mãos perderam a força. Meus ouvidos só escutam canções de morte, melodias repletas de angústia. Tem compaixão de mim, Querido Deus. Me ajude a esperar com paciência. Ainda verei a Tua bondade, dançarei as Tuas músicas, me alegrarei com Tuas misericórdias. Ainda verei as cores da vida! Estes tons acinzentados darão espaço aos verdes das árvores e os campos de margaridas florirão com seu perfume que agora não sinto, mas, pela fé, antecipo a gratidão. Tu és meu Redentor que vive para sempre. Apressa-Te em me ajudar. Amém.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/senhas-diarias/message

Most of you are familiar with the song, Because He Lives. The lyrics, penned by Bill and Gloria Gaither, strike the chord of hope in every person who genuinely believes that Jesus Christ lives today. Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, all fear is gone, Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living, just because He lives. And the good news is that he lives in you! And that makes you eternally secure. For many, the question of salvation weighs heavy on their hearts. They wonder, "Have I done enough? Or, been good enough?" The answer to both questions is "No!" But Jesus did enough through his death, burial and resurrection. And he is alive forevermore. Because he lives, you live forever.

In the game of Jenga, each participant takes a turn pushing out a wooden block until one player finally removes that one piece which causes the entire tower to collapse.  This fun and engaging game is also a metaphor for life, systems and organizations; "when the one essential building block is removed, everything falls apart."  This applies to the Christian faith as well.  There is one key "Jenga block" which supports everything in Christianity, and if it were to be removed, everything would collapse.  Do you know what it is?  It's the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.  Here's how the apostle Paul describes how essential the resurrection is: "And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith." ~ 1 Corinthians 15:14  According to Paul, if Jesus is still dead, your faith is useless.  That's a really big deal!  Every person needs to take the time and explore the evidence as to why we can believe with confidence that Jesus has been resurrected from the dead (Paul provides evidence in 1 Corinthians 15:3-8)  So, if the resurrection of Jesus from the dead is true, how does that impact the way we live our lives? What it means is if your life is built upon the resurrection of Jesus, no matter how many other blocks are removed, the "Jenga tower" of your life will never topple!  If your entire life system is built upon an immovable truth like the resurrection of Jesus, no matter what force you face or obstacle that is thrown against you, your faith will still stand because Jesus is alive!  The lyrics of the old Bill and Gloria Gaither gospel song still ring true:  "Because He lives, I can face tomorrow" Do you want to learn more about how the resurrection helps us face tomorrow?  Check out the conclusion of our sermon series, Beyond Belief, we know you will find it to be helpful!

I've had the pleasure of first meeting Corey Gaston when we were high school students at the North Carolina South Central All-District Band Clinic. In this interview we talk life as a military musician in the Marine Corps Band Program and how that experience laid the foundation for his teaching and performing career. Corey Gaston has been a lover of trumpet for over 25 years and the first time that he played it, he knew that he would never put the horn down. Corey, a native of Charlotte NC, is the trumpet player and horn arranger for Sol Fusion Band, freelance-trumpet professional, and music educator. Over the past few years as a professional musician, Corey has shared the stage and recorded with a varietal mix of some of the world’s finest musicians including Maynard Ferguson, Ron Kenoly, Travis Cottrell, Donald Lawrence and Tri-City Singers, Maurette Brown-Clark, Bill and Gloria Gaither’s Homecoming Series “Camp Meeting”, Sistar, James R. Adams And The Abounding Faith Church of God in Christ Choir, Billboard chart-topping artist, Gabriel Bello, Phillip Carter and SOV, Brandon McSwain Band, Natural Wonder: The Ultimate Stevie Wonder Experience, Todd Parrott, StellaRising and many more! Corey serves as Dean of Students and Director of Bands at Concord Academy. He is an adjunct professor at Catawba College and Cannonball Musical Instruments endorsed music educator. In 1970, Bill and Gloria Gaither were the parents of young children, and had one by one, lost their grandparents. They observed both the comforting and healing power of the name of Jesus with their children, and watched their grandparents slip from earth to the arms of Jesus as they uttered His Name. This brief song says much in its few words. "Jesus. Jesus. Jesus. There's just something about that name."

Mom and I - circa mid 1970’s It’s about as important of a question as they come. Who is my family? It seems synonymous to another question: Where do I belong? Apparently Jesus instinctively paired them together as recorded in the twelfth chapter of Mathew, verses forty-six through fifty.While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.”He replied to him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.”damn, jesus, that’s cold!I’ve written elsewhere about my close connection with my mother. While it is not universally true, there does seem to be a special connection between mothers and their sons just as there often is between fathers and their daughters. I can certainly attest to both. When it comes to the former, that is what makes these supposed words of Jesus all the more shocking. Certainly by all biblical accounts, Mary and Jesus did not have a cold and distant relationship. Mary is portrayed as having both a warm affection and subtle reverence for her son as a young child (Luke 2:19). And Jesus, even while in the deepest of agony while he hung on the cross, was so committed to his mother that he took time to appoint a disciple to care for her in view of his immanent death (John 19:25-27).And yet on another occasion when informed that his mom, along with his brothers, were waiting outside and wanted to speak to him, Jesus basically told the crowd that his gang of often clueless disciples were more family than the woman who gave birth to him and raised him! I mean, damn, Jesus, that’s cold! He goes on to clarify that what qualifies someone as a member of his family is if they do “the will of the Father”. But wasn’t the very fact that she was his mother based on an angelic declaration of God’s favor on her life (Luke 1:30)? Isn’t it fair to assume that said favor is based, at least in part, on a fair amount of effort on Mary’s part to follow a righteous path? But none of that mattered now in this moment for Jesus and Mary. On that day, Mary and her other children wouldn’t receive from Jesus even the attention commonly provided to distant relatives.the loss of familyWhat caused Jesus to be so harsh? Well we get a hint in another passage in the book of Mark (3:21), where we learn that apparently the fever pitch of Jesus’ self-ascribing Messianic talk had gotten too extreme for the family, even though Mary was given plenty of advance warning about Jesus’ unique, God-ordained mission (Luke 1:32-33). According to Mark, Mary and Jesus’ brothers thought he was “out of his mind”. Well I am NO Jesus, believe you me! But in this story I find some sense of a shared experience and therefore some fellowship with this man from nearly 2,000 years ago. The last few years have been very hard because I have grieved the loss of so many loved ones, not from physical death but by a separation of conscience and will. This has included literal blood relatives along with those who I had thought were fellow ‘brothers and sisters’ in God’s family, the Church. Having grown up in a devout Christian home, these two families were very intertwined. I recall singing both in my house and at church on Sundays the Bill and Gloria Gaither contemporary hymn, Family of God. The chorus goes like this…I'm so glad I'm a part of the Family of God,I've been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood!Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod,For I'm part of the family,The Family of God.But now many in both my literal and my supposedly spiritual family seem estranged. I look at them and think, ‘I don’t even know who you are!’ And to be fair, I know they are thinking the same. The cause of this divorce? We have a shockingly different understanding of ‘the will of the Father’. I am convinced that many of them think that God’s will is synonymous with the idols of which I have previously written about. Their patriarch and prophet is now Donald Trump. In contrast, I had one of my former pastors say that my conclusions about evangelicalism were either “brilliant or crazy”, and it was clear by the tone of the conversation that he was strongly leaning towards crazy. Either way, the end result is the same: we’ve drifted apart as we pursue two diametrically opposed agendas.finding new familyAnd yet among the loss, I have much to celebrate! For I have found new family members I never knew existed. Or perhaps I knew they existed but they were, you know, ‘those people’ that needed the saving. Curiously it turns out that they are more eagerly practicing the kind of unconditional love I was told was supposed to be a central conviction and way of life with my former family. So my new ‘brothers and sisters’ are the likes of liberal atheists, members of the LGBT community, and Muslim refugees, whether they live next door or half a world away. To them I say thank you. I am cherishing our new fellowship and growing every day as I am inspired by your courage and strength. And above all, I am exceedingly honored to be called your ‘brother’. Today’s guests show us the power of relying on God in our darkest moments and staying connected with Him so that He can see us through our struggles: Joel and Luke Smallbone of the band, for KING & COUNTRY, and gospel music legend Sandi Patty. Joel and Luke Smallbone are part of a musical heritage, but earning their path to success was certainly not easy. Today they talk to us about their new album, Burn the Ships, how they’ve created their own musical legacy, and why it’s so important for them to carve out moments to be still with God.  Sandi Patty came to fame in the 1980s as she sang alongside Bill and Gloria Gaither and wowed crowds with her stunning rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” After four decades in the music industry, Sandi talks to us about how she fell in love with music at an early age, what it took for her to discover her voice, both personally and professionally, and why she believes showing up is the first step to having a deeper relationship with God.

Ryan P. Harper discusses his new book, The Gaithers and Southern Gospel: Homecoming in the Twenty-First Century.  Bill and Gloria Gaither are known for their many hymns like “Because He Lives” “He Touched Me” and “The Family of God.” Between them, they’ve won 6 Grammys. Harper’s book focuses on their Homecomings: in 1991, it seemed like Bill’s work as a singer was winding down and they recorded a “Homecoming” video as a kind of goodbye. But that Homecoming recording ended up launching a whole second career for them.  We discuss the "quiet power" of lyricist Gloria Gaither, the belief behind the Gaithers' inclusive approach to musical style, and authenticity as it relates to church musicians. In The Field: Crawford and I discuss whether to change hymn lyrics. What are your beliefs about the purpose of congregational singing? Should a hymn writer's intent prevail over a specific church's beliefs? Resource: We mention When God Speaks Through Worship: Stories Congregations Live By by Craig A. Satterlee

You hear people often say, “I’m spiritual, not religious.” The Roseburg shooter who targeted Christians in his shooting rampage at Umpqua Community College last October identified himself this way. It only took two years just being “spiritual” before she denied Christ entirely. ((Stoyan Zaimov. Anne Rice Explains Leaving Christianity, Says Belief is Not a Choice. The Christian Post. Yes, they say, they are Christians, but they don’t want be labeled “religious” but “spiritual.” What is usually going through my head is, “Well isn’t that precious” and I’m tempted to say, “So what spirits are you into?”
