A CHILDS FAITH ENTERS THE KINGDOM I've been talking lately about principalities and powers of darkness and the angelic rebellions in the heavens that Jesus overcame for us on the cross. But aligned with that there is the wonderful ministry of the angels who obediently serve God the Father by serving us as his children. God delights to see his children protected and cared for at as early an age as possible. The Bible says that God has assigned angels to help them on this journey of the inner life of their souls, as Jesus said to his disciples, Matthew 18:10 “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven. I don't yet fully understand how that works but I think a lot happens that we don't realise is happening. Our heavenly Father never ceases to see us as his children, but we may cease to honour and know him as our Father. Growing older is not always growing wiser and the reality of having to become mature and independent is a hugely significant responsibility. Fortunately, God allows us to go through our foolishness and our failures and to relearn and to get back on track, and Jesus had to admonish his disciples on one occasion about having to do some of this relearning. It occurred at the same time that he told his disciples to never despise the little children whom they regarded as a nuisance. The little children were playfully enjoying being around Jesus, but the disciples said that they were getting in the way of them getting the most out the serious things Jesus was teaching them. He then taught them the most important and serious thing that they needed to know and relearn – that they had to become like little children. At that time some parents in the crowd had brought their children to Jesus for him to bless them Matthew 19:13 Then little children were brought to Him that He might lay His hands on them and pray, but the disciples rebuked them. But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for their simplicity and joy and trust express the kingdom of heaven.” And He laid His hands on them... Luke adds deeper meaning to this story and quotes Jesus saying ‘Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will by no means enter into it.” (Luke 18:15). I want to speak today about a child's faith that was immortalised in Scripture – the child's name was Isaac. God had told Abraham and his wife Sarah, who was well past childbearing age that they were going to have a child, and that through that child Abraham would bring blessing upon all the families in the earth (Genesis 18:10). That finally came to pass miraculously, and they were greatly blessed. But then God told Abraham to sacrifice this promised child Isaac on an altar at a place called Mount Moriah. The Bible says that Abraham obeyed God and that his faith was accounted to him as righteous. That means that his faith put the desires of his heart in alignment with the desire of God's heart. We are encouraged to learn from the faith of Abraham, who walked up the hill with his son Isaac to offer him to the lord as a blood sacrifice. But something needs to be said about the extraordinary faith and obedience that was shown by the child Isaac who walked up the hill to be sacrificed. As they walked up the hill in the story in Genesis Isaac says to his father ‘look there is the wood and here is the fire but where is the lamb for sacrifice. And Abraham said, “My son, God will provide for Himself the lamb for a burnt offering.” So the two of them went together. Then they came to the place of which God had told him. And Abraham built an altar there and placed the wood in order; and he bound Isaac his son and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. Isaac with a ‘Yes Dad' in his heart prepared to become that sacrifice on the altar under the knife saying, Then an angel enters the picture and calls Abraham to put the knife away – that reflects the words of Jesus about angels always seeing the face of the Father for his children. And the story goes on in Genesis to say ‘Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in some bushes by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son. And Abraham called the name of the place The-LORD-Will-Provide' (Jehovah Jireh - Genesis 22). Isaac as a child had just as much faith and hope in that resurrection as Abraham, and Jesus knew and undertsood that same child-like faith and trust for himself. Isaac as the son of Abraham obeyed his father and Jesus as the Son of God obeyed his Heavenly Father. Jesus understood what Isaac felt when he himself was on the cross committing himself as a sacrifice to his Father for our sakes as his brothers and sisters and knowing he would be resurrected. The Bible says about Abraham's faith for Isaac that Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death"(Hebrews 11:19). This means that Abraham's faith in God's power to bring Isaac back, even if he were to die, was strong enough to fulfill God's promise of blessing all the families of the earth through his son Isaac. This was the first evidence of resurrection life put into action in the Bible. This was not only extraordinary faith and obedience – it was an extraordinary hope - Abraham, hoping against hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations (Romans 4:17). Abraham faith and Isaac faith is all about the resurrection faith of trusting Father God through the difficulties of life with a ‘hoping against hope' that our ‘Yes Dad' in all things brings God's good will and Heavenly life on earth for our lives. There would have been no resurrection life faith for Abraham to pass on to us if he had not been willing to offer his son Isaac to God on Mount Moriah. And there would have been no resurrection life faith for Isaac to experience if he had not trusted his father, Abraham. There would have been no resurrection life from the dead for Jesus to give to us if he had not offered his life to his Father for our sakes on the cross. And Jesus wanted his disciples to understand what he meant when he said that unless they received the Kingdom of God with that trusting childlike faith, they would not fully enter into the Kingdom in the power of his resurrection. That resurrection only be experienced by us through his death on the cross. Jesus had told them earlier that he was going to be killed and be raised on the third day. The disciples of Jesus did not want him to die on a cross and Peter was speaking for all of them when he admonished Jesus at that time, saying ‘No Jesus, that is not going to happen to you', and Jesus said ‘get behind me Satan, you don't understand the things of God, only the things of man'. Even though the sacrifices of Abraham and Isaac and Jesus were momentous acts of faith and hope Jesus wanted the disciples to know that no matter what the scale of sacrifice was, their ‘yes Dad' to God's will in times of difficulty would always supernaturally bring God's will in Heaven upon the earth. ‘Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven' is not just a noble phrase from the Lord's prayer, it is a true statement of faith and hope from a child of God who expects to see the most difficult of situations turn into an expression of God being glorified, or on display, in their everyday lives. Jesus wants us to experience a life of full spiritual satisfaction as a child of God by seeing ourselves as his brother or sister and being cared for by a loving Father in Heaven. There is a life of childlike faith in most children that trusts that mum and dad are sorting out all of the important things in life for them and fixing everything that gets broken and life works out better when you do what you are told, and life goes on and you presume that you are going to live forever, and most of that thinking changes when we become adults. When we look at a cross, we see a vertical beam crossed by a Horizontal beam. The vertical beam is the will of God coming from heaven down into the earth, and the horizontal beam is the will of humanity that crosses the will of God. Where the point of crossing occurs is where our will obeys God's will – that is the place of our ‘yes Dad'. And that point is where the heart of Jesus would have been located when he hung on that cross. That sacrificial act of obedience took his Divinity and humanity into his resurrection glory in Heaven and it included all of us. When we believe in what he has done for us and receive the Spirit of his resurrected life into our hearts we begin to share not only that crossing point of sacrificial obedience with his heart, but we share the resurrection life that lifts us above the earthbound tyranny of the ways of this world. Jesus knew what he was talking about to the disciples when he spoke about becoming as little children in order to enter the kingdom life of God here in the earth. An obedient child of God who has a ‘yes Dad' to God in their heart will hear their Heavenly Father saying to them. ‘For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon Me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. And you will seek Me and find Me, and when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the LORD', (Jeremiah 29.11) Amen
That’s what Perry thought as a teenager. No Jesus follower ever admitted to him that they were struggling. He thought he had to be all put together. We’re are driven by our desire to avoid pain. To fake it till we make it. Yet, suffering is unavoidable. So let’s be honest, let’s be human. Dave Horne, Spiritual Director at Winning at Home, reminds us that Jesus massively suffered. He understands our physical, emotional, relational, and even spiritual pain. Through experiencing deep loneliness Dave learned how healing connection is. We are created for community! After 20 years as a pastor and 8 years as a missionary Dave got his best paying job, yet and 2 weeks in, he hated it! Couldn’t sleep at night. Was miserable. He discovered that he was exhausted from trying to achieve more, go higher, reach more! He was tired of trying to be someone he wasn’t. It was in his suffering that God allowed Dave to learn about himself and to connect more deeply with God. The hard things in life are how God gets our attention and changes us. Also, in this episode, Shawna shares what it feels like to be entering into being an empty nester. What’s next? On the day Jesus died the disciples had no idea what was next. But resurrection was just around the corner. It may feel like Friday, but Sunday’s coming! Perry admits, “I let my best friend down.” Perry’s friend had a shining moment in the past couple weeks. And Perry showed up half-heartedly. And what he received from his buddy after he admitted it, blew him away.Donate to Moody Radio: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/morningshow/wgnbSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
John 5:19-30,19 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. 21 For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man. 28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.30 “I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me. It's Palm Sunday, and I do love “Holy Week” and these last seven days leading up to Easter next Sunday. And that last verse we just read sounds like Holy Week, does it not? Jesus says in verse 30,“I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.”On Thursday night, Jesus will kneel in the garden, and in those final moments before soldiers come to get him, he will pray, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will” (Matthew 26:39).How do you get your soul ready to say “not my will but yours be done”? Answer: you don't say it for the first time in garden. You say it in John 5:30, and you say it in John 6:38: “I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.” And you pray it every morning and throughout your life: “Your kingdom come, your will be done.” Day by day, you condition your soul to will God's will.I'm not saying you train yourself to bite your lip and not do what you want but what God wants. Rather, you condition your wants. You train your desires and delights, like Jesus did. When he says “not my will,” he means not what my human, creaturely will would will apart from God's will, but rather, with God's will in view, and with a love for God and his will, and with my will formed to embrace and cherish God's will, I will, with my human will, what is also the divine will I share with my Father. One Little WordLast week in John 5, we saw Jesus heal a man who had been paralyzed for 38 years. How did he heal him? With his voice. One little word:Jesus said to him, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.” And at once the man was healed, and he took up his bed and walked. (verses 8–9)The Jewish leaders see the man carrying his bed and say, Hey, you can't do that on the Sabbath! So, they make their way to Jesus to press him about it. And Jesus could have entered into the fray on their terms. He could have said, I didn't break the Sabbath. I only said a word and healed a man who'd been paralyzed for 38 years. But Jesus doesn't respond on their terms. Instead, he says, in verse 17, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”“My Father” — now these Jewish leaders are “seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God” (verse 18).That's the issue on the table, the issue to which Jesus responds in verses 19–47. This morning we'll look at verses 19–30, then next week, verses 30–47.There are a few key concepts on the surface of verses 19–30. You heard them in the reading of the passage. Twice Jesus mentions “marveling.” Verse 20: he wants them to marvel, to be shaken from their unbelief. And verse 28: he says not to marvel yet because something even more marvelous is coming. Also on the surface is the relationship between Jesus and the Father, and their working in synch to give life and execute judgment. But what's harder to see at first pass is how much the word of Jesus, or the voice of Jesus, knits this whole section together. It was the word or voice of Jesus that started this controversy. How did Jesus heal the man? He spoke. No bandages or braces. No oil or medicine. He just says, “Get up, take up your bed, and walk.”Who else works like this through simply uttering his voice? Answer: God. How did God create the world? Through his word. And he gives life through his word, upholds the universe through his word, and sends his Word, who gives spiritual life through his word and in the end will raise the dead, good and evil, through his word. Then, how is it that Jesus gets himself into hotter water with the Jewish leaders? Through his voice, his word. He says, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” So they want to kill him all the more, and think he's “making himself equal with God.” And now Jesus will again speak in verses 19–30. So, let's see three marvelous words he speaks with his voice, and about his voice.1. The voice of Jesus commends his Father. (Verses 19–20)Jesus's first response to the charge that he is making himself equal with God is that it's not what they think. He starts with “it's less than you think.” But then he's going to say, essentially, “it's almost what you think,” and then finish with, “it's more than what you think.” But first verses 19–20:Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 20 For the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing. And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel. So, first, Jesus deescalates: “the Son can do nothing of his own accord.” And he'll come back here in verse 30: “I can do nothing on my own.” It's almost the exact same humble, dependent words — he just says “I” in verse 30 and calls himself “the Son” in verse 19. Which is important.Jesus mentioned his Father in verse 17: “My Father is working till now, and I am working.” So, God is his Father, and he is the Son. And the first thing he says about that, which distinguishes Father from Son, puts Jesus in the humble, dependent position of sonship: “I can do nothing on my own.”Jesus is not the Father. And the Father is not the Son. There are not two Gods. Jesus is not “making himself God” alongside God. This is not ditheism. Rather, this will come to be known as Christian monotheism. But then, granting that dependent, humble sonship, Jesus escalates things again. At the end of verse 19, he says, the Son does “whatever the Father does,” and then in verse 20: “the Father loves the Son and shows him all that he himself is doing.” So, not only is this Father-Son relationship less than what the Jewish leaders assume, but it is almost what they assume. Jesus is not independent of his Father, but neither is the Father independent of the Son.This passage, along with many others, is why Christians confess the doctrine of “the Threeness,” the Trinity. There is a threeness in the one God — and very soon in this Gospel we'll hear more about the Spirit. The claims Jesus makes in John 5 reveal within the one God a plurality of persons. The Father is God. And the Son is God. But the Son is not the Father. What's striking in John 5 is the ordered equality between Father and Son. Consider what Jesus says the Father does in these verses: The Father acts first; the Son sees what the Father does and the Son does likewise. The Father loves the Son and shows the Son; the Son is beloved and shown. The Father has given all judgment to the Son, that all might honor the Son like they do the Father. And the Father has given the Son authority to execute judgment. Not vice versa. Not reciprocal. As we'll see in verse 26: The Father has life in himself, and he grants the Son to have life in himself. If we wanted to sum up the relation between Father and Son we might say the Father gives, and the Son receives. The Father gives cues; the Son takes them. The Father gives the Son guidance and direction, and gives all judgment to the Son, and gives honor to the Son, and he gives him “life in himself.”A word for fathers in the room. (This is relevant for mothers too, but especially fathers.) Fathers, if you had to name the difference between you and your children, what would it be? You wouldn't say, I'm human and their children. No, you're human; they're human. Human nature is not the difference between father and son. Soon enough, the children grow up, and you're all adults together. Rather, what you'd say, most fundamentally, is that the father begets his children. That is, he and their mother give them life. They generate the children. And a good father keeps giving to his children, giving himself, his energy, his attention — yes, his money, but oh so much more than just finances — your presence, your listening, your patience, your counsel, your prayers, your example, your priorities, your love. You give and give and give, until one day, they are ready to give and give and give to give life to the next generation. So, Dads — and Moms too, but focusing on Dads right now — Dads, that's the very heart of our calling: give and give and give. And it's a glorious honor and profound joy. To be like our heavenly Father who gives and gives and gives. And Dads, we're not God the Father. Human dads get tired; we run on fumes, we get empty; we sin; we're impatient, unloving, unsupportive, distracted, inattentive, emotionally absent. But the difference between a good human father and a bad one isn't that one makes mistakes and the other doesn't. The difference is whether the human father, when in sin, when empty, when failing, knows and goes to his heavenly Father to get help — both forgiveness and fresh effort. Dads, your energy, your emotional resources, your love is not bottomless like our Father's. And that's okay. Because your fundamental identity is not father but son; your Father has life in himself, and his capital-S Son, Jesus, our brother, has life in himself, and they never tire and never empty. You know where to refill when you're empty.2. The voice of Jesus gives life to whom he desires. (Verses 21–27)Jesus says at the end of verse 20, “And greater works than these will he show him, so that you may marvel.” Impressive as it is to heal a man who could not walk — and do so with only a word — Jesus and his Father have greater works in store, to make people marvel, and so shake them from their unbelief. Now, verses 21–27 are very dense. Let's first read verses 21–23, and talk about the honor of the Son (and then verses 24–27). Verse 21:For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life [that is, he is God, this is what God does], so also the Son gives life to whom he will. 22 For the Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. We'll say more in a minute about the Father himself judging no one but giving all judgment to the Son. This he does, Jesus says, “that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father.”And then comes the inverse: “Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.” And there is scarcely a more incendiary word in our world today. Not that it was easy then. Can you imagine, a man in flesh and blood, standing before the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem saying, “The one true God, the God of the Hebrew Scriptures, has given all judgment to me, that all might honor me, just as they honor him”? So, it was incendiary then. And in our pluralistic world, the offenses multiply. This is not only a word for Jewish people today. This is a word for Muslims, and Buddhists, and Hindus, and various folk religions, and the so-called “irreligious,” and for anyone presuming to be a Christian. Check yourself here, not just your neighbor. This is the question for every religion and every human: Do you honor God? Do Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, and nice, charitable secular people honor God? Verse 23 says the issue is this: Do they honor the Son? What do they do with Jesus? How do they orient on Jesus? What do they believe and say about Jesus? Do they honor the divine Son for who he is, and what he says, and what he has accomplished, or do they dishonor him as simply a moral man and good teacher and influential person? Which makes him into a liar or lunatic.Jesus is the dividing line in every soul: “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” (1 John 5:12).So, the negative word, the distancing word, is “No Jesus, no spiritual life.” But what about the positive word? Verse 21 says, “the Son gives life to whom he will.” What about them? Verse 24:Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life. 25 “Truly, truly, I say to you, an hour is coming, and is now here, when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to execute judgment, because he is the Son of Man.Oh this is such good news. The voice of Jesus gives life, even now, to those who hear him with faith. Verse 24 is in the present: “whoever hears my word and believes,” and Jesus says that person “has eternal life.” Not: will have, someday. But: has, right now. Jesus says the hour “is now here, when the (spiritually) dead will hear his voice and their souls will live.”And there's one more “has” in verse 24. If you hear Jesus's word even now, and believe in him and his Father who sent him, Jesus says you do not come into judgment but have (already) passed from death to life. The all-important question this morning is, Do you believe in him now? Has he opened the eyes of your heart to see him in his glory, and believe his words, and receive him as sent from his Father, and trust him for the forgiveness of your sins, then have eternal life in your soul already? Now, you don't have the fullness of all that eternal life will be — no sin, new heavens and new earth, glorified human body, surrounded by those who love and worship Jesus. But that simple faith in your soul — that coming awake in your heart to Jesus — is new life in your once spiritually dead heart. And that new life is the first taste and beginning of the full eternal life we will experience when Jesus returns. When Jesus says about you, “He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life,” you know how we might say that in the words of Paul? “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” This, friends, is justification by faith alone. If you believe now in Jesus, eternal life has begun in you. If your faith is genuine, it is the very life of God in you and will endure to and blossom one day into the fullness of eternal life. Already, through faith, there is no condemnation. And marvelous as that is — almost too good to be true — Jesus has one last marvel for us in verses 28–29. 3. The voice of Jesus will raise all the dead. (Verses 28–29)It's one thing to heal a paralyzed man with a word, and take on the Jewish leaders by yourself. It's another thing, then, to speak a word and give life to a dead soul, as you choose — and an increasing number of dead souls. But Jesus takes us to one further level in verses 28–29.We saw the “now” in verse 25: “an hour is coming, and is now here.” So, I take verses 21–27 to be about the present, from the first century to the 21st century. But these last two verses turn to an hour that is coming, and not here yet. Look at verses 28–29:Do not marvel at this [the power Jesus has to speak life into spiritually dead souls even now], for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.Earlier we heard that the Father “has given all judgment to the Son.” Verses 24–27 fleshed this out in terms of the spiritual life the Son gives now to dead souls. But verses 28–29 give us what it will mean in the future. Not only does the voice of the Son — springing from the will of the Son, perfectly in sync with the will of the Father — give spiritual life now to his people, but one day the voice of the Son will ring in the ears of all the dead: “all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out.” Come out to what? To the final judgment, with the Son presiding. We skipped over the phrase “the Son of Man” at the end of verse 27. These verses are so dense, and Jesus is laying it on so thick here, that the end of verse 27 comes and goes by so quickly. But it is a stunning claim.“Son of Man” is an ambiguous phrase. It could just mean a man, or human. Like Psalm 8, “what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?” Or, throughout Ezekiel, God calls him as “Son of man.” It's a humbling term. “Son of man, know your place. Not only are you a man, but the son of one.” But “Son of Man” is also the name of this enigmatic figure who steps forward in a vision of the final judgment in Daniel 7:As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its wheels were burning fire. 10 A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened. . . . . . . and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory [honor!] and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. So, two meanings for the phrase “son of man” — one humble one, and one exalted. And throughout Jesus's ministry, as he refers to himself as “the Son of Man,” it's often tough to tell exactly which one he means. But here in John 5, with the final judgment in view, it's clear what Jesus means, even if he passes over it quickly. And it's Daniel 12 he alludes to when he mentions the resurrection of all, some to eternal life and some to judgment. A messenger from God says in Daniel 12:2,“those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”And now Jesus says, My voice will do that. I am the God-exalted Son of Man, and my Father has given me the authority, as man, to execute judgment. One day soon, I will speak, and all the dead will hear my voice. And if they have believed in me, and have life in them from me, I will raise their bodies and glorify them and they will pass into the fullness of eternal life. And if they have rejected me, and not had life in them but continued in evil and unbelief, I will raise their bodies and send them into everlasting judgment and shame.Which brings us back, in verse 30, to Jesus's humble word he started with in verse 19. The divine Son never goes rogue in willing what he wills, or saying what he says, or doing what he does, or judging how he judges. Jesus says,“I can do nothing on my own. As I hear, I judge, and my judgment is just, because I seek not my own will but the will of him who sent me.”Resurrection LifeSo, we come to the Table, and we remember the one who knelt in the garden. One day soon the Son of Man will sit in judgment over the nations. But during Holy Week, we remember what he achieved to offer life to sinners like us. The one who will sit in judgment is the one who rode in honor into Jerusalem on a donkey and staggered out in shame on Good Friday carrying his own cross. He's the one who knelt on Thursday with sweat like drops of blood as he faced the cross for sins not his own. He's the one who was crucified on Friday, lay dead in the tomb that night, and all day that final Sabbath, till early Sunday morning, when his Father, who raises the dead and gives them life, gave him the indestructible life of the new creation — the very life that is in us now who trust him by faith.
True joy isn't found in gifts, decorations, or holiday cheer—it's found in the Savior! In this powerful Christmas sermon, Pastor Verna DeHart unpacks the profound biblical concept of joy—revealing that joy is not just a fleeting emotion tied to circumstances but a deep, unshakable strength that comes from knowing God as our Savior. Drawing from Scriptures in Isaiah, Luke, and 1 Peter, she shows us that true joy is the unending fruit of salvation and the presence of God in our lives. While the world celebrates Christmas with temporary happiness, the joy God gives us is eternal. JESUS is not the lord of the Abyss. That would seem obvious, but a teacher claims that Jesus is the Mesopotamian god Enki, whose temple was the E-abzu—“House of the Abyss.” Not only is there no textual evidence connecting Enki to Jesus, the evidence plainly suggests otherwise. Mesopotamian texts describe Enki sending forth the apkallu, which scholars have identified as the rebellious Watchers of the Book of 1 Enoch, to bring the gifts of civilization to humanity. The apkallu, like the Watchers, the sons of God from Genesis 6, the Titans of Greece and Rome, and the “former gods” of the Hittites and Hurrians, were banished to the abyss. In short, Jesus, who explicitly identified himself as the Father, Yahweh (John 8:58, 10:30, 14:9), put a stop to a building project that archaeological evidence suggests was an attempt to to build an “abode of the gods” directly above the abzu—the abyss. We also touch again on why Yahweh is not Enlil, who some identify as Satan: Enlil was also as Dagon (Amorites, Philistines), El (Canaanites), and Milcom/Molech (Ammonites), was condemned by Yahweh under all of those names. For a deep dive, see my book The Second Coming of Saturn (which you can read at my website).

"No Jesus Miracles in New Testament Letters" - Doug Self - 9:1:2024 by Orchard Audio Ministry
Life Under the Apple Tree (Song of Solomon 2:3-14) Introduction I of course don't know when you last read it, heard a talk about it or if you have ever read it or heard a talk about it! So, if you are in that category, it's a new thing for you! In my preparation, as I talked to other Christians about this book, I have found that some people are aghast at some of the very frank and provocative language used! But this should not stop us from reading it, studying it and learning from it. It is, after all, part of the Bible and therefore part of God's Written Word. Jesus Himself and the Disciples would have read this book at Passover time. It is a book that tells of the love of a woman (the Beloved) for a man, the man probably being Solomon. Different translations have different places where the beloved, the lover and others are actually speaking. But for ease of use tonight, we will use the guidelines of the church bibles, the New International Version. The Jews called it the Greatest Song of All Songs. Martin Luther called it the noblest of all songs! It is poetry that is full of love, romance and some say eroticism. Greater than Shakespeare's sonnets if you can believe that! Tonight, we are delving only into Chapter 2. Historically this book has been interpreted in 3 ways Firstly as a treatise on the joys of biblical sexual love; Secondly as an allegory for God's love for His people Israel; These two interpretations have great merit! However, some of you may be sad to know and others very happy to know, that I am going to concentrate principally on a third way that encompasses those two and that is seeing it as a picture of the immense love that exists between Jesus Christ for His church and its people, where the bridegroom is Jesus and His bride is the church. Paul highlights this relationship in his letter to the Ephesians. Before I forget, I should say that I am also aware of another difficulty, and that is that British men and Australian men have one thing in common - we are not very good at saying or doing things to do with love! We find it embarrassing and cumbersome. I don't know about South Africans or other nationalities though! So, hopefully with the help of the Holy Spirit, this may also make us become better men as well as feeding our minds and hearts about the love that exists between Jesus and the church! The Beloved's Portrait of the Lover (Song of Solomon 2:3-6) This is the beloved's portrait of her lover, the bridegroom. He is an apple tree! Wives, have you ever called your husband an apple tree! And of course He is an apple tree, because this lover, this bridegroom provides her with shelter, protection and food. And she enjoys it. Delighting in being strengthened, refreshed and being in love. As he embraces her, she feels his compassion, his warmth, his love for her and his strength. How does that talk of Jesus and his love for the church, His people, His bride? Jesus is the Bread of life Three times in John 6, Jesus refers to Himself as the living bread. By this He meant that He was the only one who could satiate the appetite and yearning of every person's spirit. For those He was speaking to, bread was a basic staple food for living, just as it is for millions of people today. Jesus indicates when saying He is the bread of life, that He will supply all needs! Just as He said to the woman at the well in John 4v4, that whoever drinks His living water shall never again go spiritually thirsty. When Jesus referred to the manna in the desert (John 6v49) he talked of it being merely temporary, despite being a gift from God. He, however, as the true bread of life gives permanent satisfaction and life everlasting to all those who believe and follow Him (John 6v51)! But this bread He offers, has to be eaten; it has to be taken up by the person wanting spiritual life! If you are seeking spiritual nourishment, then ask! Have you eaten of this bread? Jesus is the Good Shepherd. Jesus is the great protector, the great Shepherd. It is through Jesus and Jesus Christ alone, that salvation and spiritual protection and is found and through Him alone as the door or the gate, that people are led safely and soundly into spiritual freedom, spiritual light and spiritual sustenance. Unlike others who come only to steal, kill and destroy, Jesus offers spiritual safety & nourishment. Jesus protects those whom He loves and who loves Him! Jesus does not just offer a way out, but also a way in! The security offered by Jesus is because He is always in close proximity to those who follow Him. Jesus calls all those who follow Him by name (John 10v3) and they know each other. Jesus is the great shepherd only through the sacrifice he must make for His sheep. Here Jesus is looking ahead to the sacrifice He makes on the Cross. The cross is referred to in the New Testament as the tree on which Jesus hung. His protective and nourishing love for all of humanity compels Him to make the ultimate sacrifice of His death on the tree. Just as all shepherds will endanger themselves for the protection and safety of their sheep, so too did Jesus endure the pain and suffering of the Cross, so that people can be led into the eternal safety of God's kingdom. It is in this role of shepherd, that Jesus exhibits true leadership, which is self-less and sacrificial. I saw this week an example of a shepherd protecting his flock. It was up near Crowe and I was driving back from Burley, and there were a flock of sheep on one side of the road and the shepherd on the other. He was on a bicycle and the sheep were looking at him for directions! His sheep knew him and were looking to him and he was protecting them from being run over by a maniac in a green Fiesta! Are you looking to the great shepherd, Jesus Christ for safety, protection and guidance? These are just two examples of Jesus himself saying He protects, nourishes, gives shelter and loves. Many more examples can be found in the Gospels. Just as there is only one lover for this woman, there is only one Saviour for the world. Jesus does not say I am a true vine; a way, a truth and a life. He does not say I am a door to life, just as He does not say I am a shepherd, a door, a light or a bread of life. No - Jesus is the only way, the only truth and the only life. Jesus is the one great shepherd and the only door to life. Jesus is the only light of the world and the only true bread of life. Jesus is the apple tree, and calls everyone to partake of the nourishment and shelter only He can provide. The Beloved Encourages Others about the Lover (Song of Solomon 2:7-9) Read verses 7-9 Here now, the beloved addresses her friends and other people, not be impatient! These women were being persuaded by the beloved not to engage in sexual love until their marriage! Who were they? We don't know! But we do know from the rest of Scripture that sexual love is only for those in a committed monogamous marriage between a man and a woman. Sexual union, between a man and a woman in a committed married relationship, is a picture of the union of God and His people - that's why adultery and sexual immorality is also idolatry. Then the Beloved calls out "Listen! Look" Here he comes! She is expecting him to arrive at any time! The Beloved is waiting for her lover! She has a glimpse of Him but is waiting for His bodily presence with her. Is this not a picture of us, as the church awaiting Jesus Christ to come again? Before Jesus ascended into the clouds, He said He would be coming again! Not as a little baby next time, but coming from the clouds in great glory, honour, jubilation and exaltation! Nobody knows when that will be! There are hints in the Bible, but they are only hints! We are to wait expectantly and to live lives that are worthy of Him now, as we partake of righteousness and wait for Jesus to come again. When ever Youngmi and I go together to London, we meet up with old friends. Last time, it was a blast! We had a banquet, and there were 9 adults and 6 kids in our favourite Chinese Restaurant in Chinatown. We have all known each other for over 14 years now. One person wasn't there though. When we were walking and talker later on, two of my friends, individually of each other, told me about John. John has recently remarried and he and his new wife have been trying for the last few years for a baby. They showed me the messages they have received from him. It transpires he is giving up God, as he calls it, over this issue of not having the baby. My friends asked my advice. I said, to keep on encouraging, letting John know that while he may have let go of Jesus, Jesus has not let go of him or his wife. I also suggested that there are probably deeper issues as well, that John is not talking about. So my friends are going to continue encouraging John and uplifting him in prayer to the One who won't let go. So be encouraged! Don't give up! Encourage others who may be struggling. See and remember what the Lover is like! Be encouraged! Keep going! As Christians, if you are one here tonight, you are to bear fruit by remaining close to Jesus, as He is the vine and we are the branches. And why are we as Christians to bear fruit? As a means of bringing glory to God the Father (John 15v8). Be encouraged and be encouragers of others. Lover is like no other and wants to hear your voice. (Song of Solomon 2:10-15) The beloved speaks of the lover's voice. (Read v10-13) Then finally we hear the voice of the lover! (Read v14-15) Ever felt like God is far away? Well you aren't alone! It is an experience that is common to all Christians, at some point or another. I know I have experienced that in the past. But I also know from personal experience, that Jesus always comes through in difficult times. Although He may not come in the time I think He should come, because He knows when I need Him most. This woman, the beloved, is so expectant of the Lover's arrival she can hear his voice, his tender words! He is calling her to Himself! Jesus Christ is also calling you, to Himself! He wants you to be a partaker of the good news about Him. He wants you to be part of His family, the church. He is ever calling, ever beckoning people to enter into relationship with Him. His love for the church is indicative of verse 13, where he calls the beloved His beautiful bride. That is the church - warts and all - is His bride! By faith, He will see you through - Remember in the Gospels, when the disciples were in the storm and Jesus came to them walking on the water. Remember Jesus saying "Come" and Peter went to Him. This must have encouraged the other disciples, for upon seeing Jesus' power they worshipped him. Whatever troubles you are undergoing are temporary, and Jesus will see you through. Jesus is praying for you, will come to you, grow you and help you through troubles. By being obedient to God, you are encouraging others by showing your salvation and showing that faith is not blind, but active! Jesus wants to hear your voice talking to him... Not just for half hour in the morning but all day long. We are to yearn to talk to Him and for Him to talk to us. Prayer is a 24 hour communication exercise. Prayer, according to the Church Father Augustine, is a constant yearning for assistance and strengthening of desire towards the ultimate goal - eternal happiness and worship and knowledge of God. God Himself assists as we pray: by correcting and strengthening the yearnings. Prayers express desires and thoughts in a contributory way to the journey we are on. That means tell Jesus how you are feeling, both in the good and the hard times. Tell Him of your wants, your needs and all your cares.. Let His arms surround you! To him your voice is sweet and dulcet. Your face to Him is a delight. Seek him! Ask him! Talk to him! This is how you are spiritually energized! When you talk to God, you strengthen your relationship with Him! When you and I ask others to pray for us, Church unity is strengthened! Recap! So, how do we recapitulate. In this chapter, we firstly saw together the Beloved's portrait of the lover and how He feeds, nourishes protects and shelters her. We see this as an encompassing picture of Jesus and His love for His people, the Church. Then we saw how the Beloved lady encouraged others to wait and see this tremendous Lover. That is why we encourage one another and spur one another on as we see the day approaching when our bridegroom, Jesus Christ comes again in glory! Then lastly we saw how the bridegroom loves to hear the voice of the Beloved and gaze into her face. Jesus Christ, the great lover and bridegroom, loves to hear our voices as we express our love, gratitude, cares, worries and feelings to Him. Conclusion And what, in conclusion, do we do with all this? Jesus is the only nourisher, protector and feeder. Jesus Christ, the apple tree, provides for all your needs, your nourishment, gives you strength, protects and comforts. I don't know what situation you are in at the moment. This credit crunch, this economic crisis is affecting everybody. I guess there are probably three kinds of people here tonight. Firstly, there will be those who do not know this Jesus Christ personally. Please, do not leave here tonight without asking one of the leaders or your friends here, about how you can get to know more about this Jesus. The time is short, the waiting for Jesus to come again grows ever shorter, and when He does come again, the time will be too late to change your mind. Secondly, if you are in need of some love, some protection, some nourishment, then don't leave without having prayed with somebody or letting one of the leaders know of your needs. As Jesus Himself said, "Ask, Seek and Knock!" Jesus Christ is making intercessions for you, as He knows. He feels your cares and your worries, and knows what you are going through. Finally, if you are not in either of those situations yourself, you will know somebody who is. Therefore go and encourage those you know who are struggling and are in need of protection and comfort. This week, go and tell the good news of Jesus Christ to somebody who doesn't know Jesus personally. Right mouse click and save to download the MP3 file of this sermon.
This week Dr. James F. McGrath returns to the podcast to discuss his latest book, "Christmaker: A Life of John the Baptist". Typically John the Baptist is treated as a mere footnote in the gospels... but what would happen if we took a closer look? James did just that, reconstructed the life of the Historical John the Baptist and it turns out he was a fascinating and influential religious leader in his own right. We take a deep dive into the life of John the Baptist, learn about his massive influence on Jesus, discover a religious group that still follows John today, and more. Enjoy! One of the things that I've noticed is that I don't have the strength, or the power in my own right to live the life that God wants me to. Have you noticed that too? We try … and we fail. What we need, is power. Power from high. Fortunately that's exactly what Jesus has in mind. POWER FROM ON HIGH Great to be with you again this week and today we're continuing in this series of messages called Walking In The Spirit. You know, I often think about this – it's kind of strange to me how God sets things up. He Himself is Spirit: we can't actually see Him or touch Him or hear Him here in the physical dimension where you and I live. Now of course at one time in history He stepped into the physical dimension when Jesus came and dwelt among us but that was two thousand years ago. And whilst we can read about who Jesus is, and what He has to say, and what He does, we can't experience God in the physical dimension in the same way as those people did way back then. So now we have something of a dilemma. God lives in a dimension that is spiritual and you and I, we live in a dimension that's physical. How do we communicate with God? How do we know not just about Him but how do we know Him? Well fortunately that's something that God thought about, and to do that He sent us His Holy Spirit, one of the three person of the Godhead – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He sent His Holy Spirit to dwell in us. See, this problem happened the moment Jesus was set to depart from this world, the physical God departing leaving what? Well fortunately leaving behind the Holy Spirit. And this is the promise Jesus made to His Disciples, the ones who were to become the Apostles who would spread His good news throughout the known world. John chapter 14 beginning at verse 15. He said: If you love me you'll keep my commandments and I'll ask the Father and He will give you another advocate to be with you forever. This is the spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it neither sees him or knows him but you know him because he abides with you and he will be in you. So Jesus promised to send His Holy Spirit to those who believed in Him with their lives and in fact in those final days and hours before He was crucified it's something that He promised again and again. That through the Spirit of God the Father and the Son would come to make their home in us. Now you and I, we have a body, we have a soul, our mind, our will, our emotions and deep down we have a spirit and it's at this level that the Holy Spirit connects with us. So after Jesus was risen again and just before He ascends into heaven and leaves His disciples behind He gives them this instruction, Acts chapter 1 beginning at verse 4. He ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait there for the promise of the Father. This, he said, is what you have heard from me. For John baptised you with water but you will be baptised with the Holy Spirit not many days from now. Now the disciples, as it turned out, thought that was fine but that wasn't the most important thing on their minds. You see, Jesus was the Messiah, and to a Jew in the first century that meant something like a warrior king, like David of old, to boot out the Romans from occupying the land and to restore the king of Israel. The Disciples, despite three and a half years with Jesus, were more interested in what was going to happen in the physical dimension of their lives rather than the spiritual dimension. Have a listen to the exchange between them and Jesus, between the physical concerns of the disciples and the spiritual priorities of Jesus. Acts chapter 1 beginning at verse 6: So when they'd come together they asked him, ‘Lord is this the time when you will restore the kingdom of Israel?' And he replied, ‘it's not for you to know the times or the periods that the Father has set by his own authority but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.' When he said this, as they were watching, he was lifted up and a cloud took him out of their sight. Do you see that? See they were interested in perhaps the most important thing from their perspective. So when is God finally going to restore the kingdom of Israel? And Jesus brushes them off because He didn't come to restore the kingdom of Israel, He came to usher in the Kingdom of God and that's spiritual not physical. Again have a listen to what Jesus had said earlier on this subject. Luke chapter 17 beginning at verse 20: Once Jesus was asked by the Pharisee's when the Kingdom of God was coming and he answered, ‘The Kingdom of God isn't coming with things that can be seen nor will they say, ‘Look here it is' or ‘There it is'. For in fact the Kingdom of God is among you. No Jesus, in the very last thing that He said to them before He left them and ascended into heaven, He wasn't so much interested in the physical dimension, His priority for them, these men who would go on to found the Church, His real concern is that they should have spiritual power from God in them. Acts chapter 1 verse 8: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. Why is that? Why is this Jesus' greatest concern? Because He knew that without the power of God, without the witness and communication and encouragement and guidance of the Holy Spirit these men simply wouldn't be able to do the things that they were called to do. You read the Book of Acts of the Apostles (which in my view should really be called The Acts of the Holy Spirit through the Apostles) and what you see is that these men came across horrendous opposition. They were called on to do mighty things and many of those things were miraculous. They went way beyond the ability of eleven men and Jesus knew that if these men had power from on high, if they were filled with the Spirit of God they could do whatever God needed them to do and then some. And friend, that's how it is with us. We think sometimes it's all up to me, my gifts, my abilities, my hard work – and hey, I'm not knocking any of that – but even as I sit here and share these things of God with you I know, I mean I know beyond any shadow of any doubt, that I couldn't do what I'm doing if it weren't for the power of the Holy Spirit. See part of walking in the Spirit is being filled to over-flowing with the Holy Spirit so that we have the power to do what God has called us to do. The power to resist the evil one, the power to overcome temptation, the power to love those who abuse us, the power to die to self, the power to take up our cross every day and follow Jesus. Friend, those things take power. They take power that is way beyond any of us and it's for that reason that God sent His Spirit to dwell in us. Now after the break we're going to see how the Spirit of God, even before He came upon these men in power, guided them in the physical dimension. That's the exciting thing. The spiritual and the physical dimensions aren't two separate things, as the Holy Spirit dwells in us He gives us the guidance and the power that we need to operate for Gods glory right here in this physical world in which you and I live. See that's the exciting bit. PRACTICAL GUIDANCE FROM ABOVE Now, it's kind of fine to talk about walking in the Spirit, it's fine to talk about having power, and a little later we're going to see how the Spirit was poured out, but what about the rubber hits the road stuff? What about the next step, the next decision you and I have to make? How does the Holy Spirit guide us? How can we know what the Holy Spirit wants us to do? How can we seek Him out and discover God's good and perfect will for us? Well that's what we're going to look at right now. We saw earlier how Jesus ordered the disciples to stay in Jerusalem and to wait for the power that God would pour out upon them. At that point He ascended into heaven. So there they were over the coming days waiting in Jerusalem and it occurred to them that they were now down to eleven disciples as a result of the exit of Judas Iscariot and they had to do something about that. So here's how it unfolds, if you have a Bible grab it, we're going to read from Acts chapter 1 beginning at verse 15: In those days Peter stood up amongst the believers together with a crowd numbered about one hundred and twenty people and he said, ‘friends the Scripture had to be fulfilled which the Holy Spirit through David foretold concerning Judas who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus for he was numbered among us and was allotted his share of the ministry. Now this man acquired a field with the reward of his wickedness and falling head long he burst open in the middle of all his bowels gushed out. This became know to all the residents of Jerusalem so that the field was called, in their language, Akeldama which means field of blood. For it is written in the Book of Psalms, ‘let his homestead become desolate and let there be no one to live in it and let another take his position of overseer'. So one of the men who had accompanied us during all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out of among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us to his resurrection. So they proposed two, Joseph called Barsabbas who was also known as Justus and Matthias. Then they prayed and said, ‘Lord you know everyone's heart, show us which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this ministry an apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go his own way'. And they cast lots for them and the lot fell on Matthias and he was added to the eleven apostles. Can I tell you something? This is a passage of Scripture that I have struggled with for a long time because me, I've always been taught if I want to know Gods will, well the place to discover that is in God's Word, the Bible. And that's true, I mean that's what they did, they went back to the Psalm and read that they had to replace Judas. But many is the time when I've been facing a particular challenge or dilemma and surprise, surprise in the very next chapter of whatever Book of the Bible I happen to be reading at the time, in the very next bit something leaps out at me and the Holy Spirit speaks to me and I just know what God wants me to do. I'm sure if you believe in Jesus and you're someone who listens to Him through His Word that that's something that's happened to you on more than one occasion because God speaks to us first and foremost through His Word. And right here, smack bang in the middle of His Word the eleven Apostles – the guys who've spent three and a half years at the Jesus school of discipleship, the best theological seminary anyone will ever go to – these guys to make a decision cast lots! How did they do that? Well we don't know, maybe they flipped a coin, heads Joseph wins, tails Matthias wins and hey presto it came up tails so Matthias becomes Apostle number twelve. Now friend doesn't that strike you as a bit odd? I mean, why didn't they go to the Scriptures to decide between the two? No, they flipped a coin to make one of the most important decisions in the history of the Church. A coin? Give me a break! Why didn't they take a vote amongst the hundred and twenty or so Jesus followers who were in that room at the time? That's probably what most Churches would do today. No, no. They cast lots. Well doesn't that just take the cake! What's God trying to say to you and me through this? Because all Scripture is inspired by God, it's used for teaching, for proof, for correction and for training in righteousness, that's what 2 Timothy chapter 3, verse 16 says. Well here's what this Scripture has done for me. It's opened my mind to the creativity of the Holy Spirit in speaking to me and guiding me and making His will known in my life. I remember being convicted of sin one day when I was watching a family movie. God spoke so powerfully to me through what one character was doing. It's like God held a mirror up to my face and said, ‘Berni, that's you'. And over the years I've discovered that the Spirit nudges us and guides us and encourages us and convicts us in so many different ways. I am doing what I'm doing right now, sharing the love of Christ with many people across the globe, because one man came up to me at a conference and spoke some words to me. And without any shadow of a doubt I know that I know that I know that God was speaking to me through this humble gentle man. Is the Bible my absolute authority for truth? Absolutely. Do I need to discern experiences and things people say to me and impressions I have from this or from that? For sure. “Test all things” the Bible says. But friend, as we journey along our path, walking in the Spirit, the Holy Spirit is with us every moment of every day, He is with us and if we'll open our hearts and our minds and our eyes and our ears to Him He will speak to us. Am I suggesting we discern Gods will by flipping a coin? Probably not. But hey, it's in the Bible so the last thing I'm going to do is tell God what's appropriate and what's not. THE SPIRIT POURED OUT Okay, God's guidance doesn't always happen the way we expect. And speaking of the unexpected, right now I'd like to spend some time sharing with you the story of when, as Jesus promised, the Holy Spirit was first poured out on the believers. Again can I say in our experience, especially can I say for those who like me have something like a conventionally spiritually narrow western mind set, this is pretty way out there too? So join me as we have a listen to what God is up to on the day of Pentecost. If you have a Bible grab it, we're going to read from Acts chapter 2 beginning at verse 1: Now when the day of Pentecost had come they were all together in one place and suddenly from heaven became a sound like the rush of a violent wind and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues as a fire appeared among them and a tongue rested on each one of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them the ability. Now there were devout Jews there from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem and at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered because each one of them heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished they asked, “are not all these men who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear each one of us in our own native language?” Parthians, Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea, Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene and visitors from Rome both Jews and proselytes, Cretens and Arabs in our own language we hear them speaking about Gods deeds of power. All were amazed and perplexed saying to one another, “what does this mean?” but others sneered and said, “they're filled with new wine” but Peter standing with the eleven raised his voice and addressed them. “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let it be known to you and listen to what I say. Indeed these men aren't drunk as you suppose, it's only 9 o'clock in the morning. No this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel. In the last days it will be, God declares, I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh and your sons and your daughters shall prophecy and your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream dreams. Even upon my slaves both men and women in those days I shall pour out my spirit and they'll prophecy and I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and smoky mist, the sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the Lords great and glorious day. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Now this is quite an event. I mean I've had a few really powerful encounters with the Holy Spirit but never anything quite like this. A powerful sound like a rushing wind and then these flames of fire resting on everyone and all of them, all of them speaking in foreign languages and all the different nationalities there could understand the good news of Jesus in their own language. And of course the first thing, the very first thing that happens when God does something powerful and unusual like this is that everyone else has to poke fun and to criticise what's going on. They must be drunk. Well sorry buddy I know they perhaps looked a little intoxicated but they were all Galileans speaking in different languages. Being drunk certainly doesn't explain that, I mean it doesn't right? So what do we do with this? Well the Apostle Peter gets up to explain what's going on. He explains to the Jews assembled, ‘hey this is exactly what God promises in the Old Testament.' That all of these powerful things would happen and in fact if you were to read on you discover that after he finished speaking many of the people there gave their lives to Christ. Many of the very same people who only weeks before were crying out to Pontius Pilate ‘crucify Him'. See there's a clash here between the conventional, what normally happens in the physical dimension and the spiritual, the super natural. And it was a surprise to everyone. I mean if you've been around the Church for any length of time you'll know that there are some who say, ‘Okay, what happened there back there two thousand years ago on the day of Pentecost, it was absolutely a one off. It was the first time God poured His Spirit out, fair enough He did something powerful'. And then there are some others of so called charismatic and Pentecostal persuasions who claim that God is still doing mighty powerful things like this today. What do you make of it? Well God's Word is clear. If we don't have the Spirit of Christ then we don't belong to Him, Romans chapter 8, verse 9 and yet at the same time there are plenty of people who have the Spirit but where the Spirit hasn't been unleashed in power in their lives. See these Apostles are uneducated bumpkins; most of them went on to do the most amazing things for Christ. They had so much opposition, they preached the Gospel, so many people came to Jesus through them and in fact the Church around the globe, a few billion people, are Christ-followers today because of the start that the Church got from these Disciples. And most of them, they ended up dying for Him in the end because the power was unleashed in their lives by the Holy Spirit on that day. They did what they did, they could only do what they do because they were filled to overflowing with the Spirit and the presence and the power of God. Jesus promised to baptise us in the Holy Spirit. He did. And the wonderful thing is that this baptism, this drenching in the Spirit happens in different ways in different people's lives. God knows we're different. God knows that you and I are totally different people. God is going to touch you and fill you with His Spirit in a way that He knows will work for you and that way maybe totally different to the way that God deals with me. You know something, I don't have a problem with that. I mean God's God. God gets to decide what He does, how He does it, when He does it and I am not going to sit there and point fingers at other people and say, ‘Well God did it differently over there, they must be wrong'. It's not how God does it, that's not the important thing. The important thing is that in fact we are filled with the Spirit. The important thing is that the power of God is unleashed in our lives so that we can live a life that brings glory to Him: a life that bears fruit, a life that has an eternal impact in the lives of other people. Don't you reckon that's the most important thing? It's what God's Word says and God's heart is to see His power and His might unleashed in you and unleashed in me as His Spirit drenches us and utterly transforms us and unleashes the power of God through us in a lost and hurting world.
Luke 2:11-14 New International Version 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; He is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom His favor rests.”
Every year around the world, millions of Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah. This year, it's probably going to feel a little different. IN THIS PODCAST: This homily hovers on the thought “to know Jesus there is peace and if there is no Jesus in our lives, there is no peace.” The question of fasting and leading austere lives is highlighted in Jesus and his disciples who did not entirely follow the laws like the scribes and pharisees. Our reasons for fasting during specific times calls for us to share that suffering of Christ and be one with Him for our salvation. This homily was preached on the passage from Mt 9:14-17 by Rev. Fr. Sandeep Menezes, CSsR, on 02 July 2022. Let us reflect and pray to the Lord
After claiming the title of “The Christ”, Jesus gives his disciples a heads up. If you're going to come after me, it'll mean denying yourself, taking up your cross, and following me (walking through life MY way). It might seem like Jesus is a curmudgeon who wants us to give up everything good and nice, in order to suffer. Yes and no. Yes - we've all grown up in a Snake influenced world, and we need to give up everything tainted by it, in order to receive true life in God's kingdom. That's hard. No - Jesus isn't bland or grumpy. He has come to give himself in love, to restore the world into something much more enjoyable and beautiful than we could ever imagine. Sometimes the best doctors tell you “it has to come out” so you can live a full life.

Can Jesus be proven? How do we know he really existed? What is the evidence? Did he really do what the Bible says he did?In this series Joel and Jordan answer those questions and examine the evidence. In part 1, we looked at the internal, Biblical, evidence on its own. In part 2, we discuss evidence and sources outside the Bible. Now in part 3, we are defending Jesus against the more "scandalous" claims. Are there "other gospels" the church keeps hidden? Was Jesus actually married? There are lots of fringe claims about the historical Jesus... How do we know what the truth is? Speaker: Pastor Armstrong Passage: I Corinthians 15:14-20
Pastor Tillman shares questions we should answer to determine if we know Jesus.
The little kid with the round head and the pitiful tree! He's become a regular part of America's Christmas. Our kids watched "The Charlie Brown Christmas" when they were little, and that thing's been around so long, their kids love it and their parents never stopped loving it. We can all hear Charlie Brown's angst-ridden question ringing out above the Christmas mayhem, "Isn't there anybody who can tell me what Christmas is all about?" Enter blanket boy. Yes, Linus to the rescue. As he steps into the spotlight on that little stage, he turns the spotlight on Jesus. "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior which is Christ the Lord." But did you know that line almost didn't happen? I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "How Charlie Brown Almost Missed Christmas." Charles Schulz, the creator of "Peanuts," was honestly under pressure to leave the Jesus part out of his first attempt at a TV special. But he stood his ground. He said, "If we don't do this, who will?" That's a little known story, but you know the rest is history. In our post-Christian culture, Linus' little speech about "to you is born a Savior" may be the only fragment of the Gospel some people have ever heard. But you don't have to be a prime-time TV producer to feel the pressure to not bring up Jesus. Most of us who've ever tried to live for Him have experienced that pressure. Oh, it's OK to talk about church, and family values, and even God. But Jesus is the problem. How many times in a spiritual conversation have we choked when we got to the name of Jesus? So it comes out "God" that we talk about, which allows the listener to think whatever "God" means to them. But Jesus, well, there's not much mistaking who He is. This should not come as a surprise. Satan has been trying to edit out Jesus for 2,000 years! The early disciples were hauled in by the same religious leaders who had arranged for the crucifixion of Jesus. And they were ordered to never again mention "The Name" in their preaching. The disciples' response? It says, "They never stopped teaching and proclaiming the Good News that Jesus is the Christ" (Acts 5:42 ). Why? Well, as it says in our word for today from the Word of God, in Acts 4:12, "Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name, no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved" (Acts 4:12 ). Well, hell knows that. Heaven knows that. And we must never again choke on that name. He wasn't ashamed of me. How can I be ashamed of Him? The power, the salvation is in the name. No Jesus, no heaven. That's why our enemy can't stand to hear the Name. And, my friend, it may be that here we are in this Christmas season. And you may celebrate the fact that Jesus came into our world. But has He ever come into your life by your invitation to be your Savior from your sin? We were told when He was born, "Unto you is born a Savior!" And He came for you. Not just for the world; He came for you, to die for your sin. And there is no other way to get to heaven. Even a religion about Jesus will not get you to heaven. You need to pin all your hopes on Him in order to be with Him forever. If you've never done that, there's no better time in the year that you can do it than this time when He came. Say, "Jesus, I'm yours." You can do it right where you are, wherever you are. And then go to our website, because we're set up there really to help you know that you belong to Him. Let's get this settled. Go to our website. It's ANewStory.com. Listen, my brother in Christ, we can't afford to leave out Jesus. His name is where the power is. His name is where the hope is. His name is where the heaven is. Many Christmases ago a cartoonist made a courageous choice and refused to edit the Name. This Christmas would be a good time for you to make that same choice.

THE THESIS: Far too many churches have been captured just like every other institution. We cannot rely on schools, churches, media or government to create the moral base on which our families and therefore nations can stand. We must install in our homes the Word of God, live amongst the People of God, practice the Will of God and work to rescue the spiritual captives. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: The Lord Jesus was not the least bit “confused” about his sex nor was he “born in the wrong body.” Genesis 1:27So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.Isaiah 9:6For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. The Lord Jesus was eminently clear about what will befall those who cause a child to stumble on the way to Him:Matthew 18:5-75 And whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.Causing to Stumble6 “If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. 7 Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come!THE NEWS & COMMENT:The Bible is filled with descriptions about The Lord Jesus. In fact, the entire book is His story. Had God wanted to explain that His only begotten Son was confused and thought He was a girl, God would have made that clear. He didn't because Jesus was confused about nothing and He still isn't. Cambridge dean defends sermon about Jesus' 'trans body,' 'vaginal' side wound blasted as 'heresy'; The sermon likening the wound in Jesus' side to a vagina left congregants 'uncomfortable' and 'in tears'But, that's just the church. No, this is a pervasive drive to confuse people about biology and sex and it serves the enemy who hates the human form and loves to use sex to attack us. In Australia, The Party is using the ”mature minors” meme to let little kids get sexually and chemically mutilated without parental permission This is why I spend as much time as I do on the so-called “transgender” push, because it goes from the top down to people like this, whom I consider a spiritual captive and someone whose kids should not be with them:[AUDIO] - This so-called “trans” parent is raising his child gender neutral so the kid can choose a gender and he's hoping the kid ends up being what he calls “transgender.”From a confused parent to an international fashion brand pushing pedophilia: they can apologize to us all day, but they did it in purpose. The apology they need to make is to God and then to sin no more like this. Balenciaga apologise for 'disgusting' campaign featuring 'child abuse' documents on display; It appears some celebrities are now trying to distance themselves from the labelAnd, this is hardly an isolated caseBalenciaga and the rise of paedo chic; Adults need to stop dragging kids into their sexual fantasies.Jake Shields tweeted this: do we think they are not fully aware of what they are doing?
Today we're discussing Biden's student loan debt plan and the progressive Christian argument about its morality. Many of these professing Christians have made the argument that the government "forgiving" student loan debt is akin to Jesus paying for our sins, but is this a fair comparison? We explain why it's not and give the biblical evidence to prove it. Then, last week, Libs of TikTok released audio from a phone call in which Children's National Hospital admitted to performing "gender-affirming" hysterectomies on minors 16 years old and younger. We discuss the backlash from mainstream media and her ban from Twitter in the aftermath. Then, we'll react to Lizzo's VMA acceptance speech, in which she claimed to be part of the "oppressed." --- Today's Sponsors: My Patriot Supply specializes in long-term emergency food storage.
