"Family's Fury: Why This Plea Deal Feels Like a Betrayal" The Police Off The Cuff team is back to report on the latest news regarding family reaction video in the Bryan Kohberger case. Some families have expressed gratitude and support, while others disagree with the court decision. Bill shares his perspective and insight on this.
February 26, 1980. Berkeley, California. 51-year old Al Mills, his 40-year old wife, Jeannie, and Jeannie's 16-year old daughter, Daphene, are all shot to death, execution-style, in their home. Jeannie's 17-year old son, Eddie, is left unharmed inside his bedroom, but claims he did not hear the murders take place. Years earlier, the Mills family had defected from the Reverend Jim Jones' infamous cult, the Peoples Temple, and become outspoken advocates against them. Following the Jonestown Massacre, rumours circulated that surviving members of the cult were going to target the family as revenge. However, investigators suspect that Eddie was the actual perpetrator and make an unsuccessful attempt to charge him with the crime 25 years later. Did Eddie Mills murder his own family, or were they victims of an assassination by outside intruders? This week's episode of “The Path Went Chilly” explores an unsolved triple homicide and its potential connection to the Jonestown saga.Additional Reading:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeannie_Millshttps://people.com/archive/the-mills-family-murders-could-it-be-jim-jones-last-revenge-vol-13-no-11/https://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/BERKELEY-Man-jailed-in-family-slayings-from-25-2557794.phphttps://www.eastbaytimes.com/2005/12/09/son-wont-be-charged-in-1980-slayings/https://archives.sfweekly.com/thesnitch/2015/11/12/yesterdays-crimes-peoples-temple-hit-squads-and-jonestowns-last-victimshttps://www.sfweekly.com/news/yesterdays-crimes-jonestown-was-just-the-beginning-for-one-peoples-temple-family/https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/articles/199203/the-truth-about-jonestown

[This is one of the finalists in the 2025 review contest, written by an ACX reader who will remain anonymous until after voting is done. I'll be posting about one of these a week for several months. When you've read them all, I'll ask you to vote for a favorite, so remember which ones you liked] My dad only actually enjoys about ten foods, nine of them beige. His bread? White. His pizza? Cheese. His meat? Turkey breast. And his side dish? Mashed potatoes. As a child I hated mashed potatoes, despite his evangelization of them. I too was a picky eater growing up, but I would occasionally attempt to see what he saw in his beloved spuds. Whenever I tried a bite, the texture disgusted me: a gritty gruel of salty flakes coated with the oleic pall of margarine. The flavor reminded me of stale Pringles. I checked back once every couple years, but was repulsed by them every time. I lobbied my parents for pasta or frozen tater tots or any other side I actually liked. Family dinners were often dichotomous, the same protein supplemented by two different carbs. “You are not my son,” my father would joke as he continued to put away his potato slop. “Maybe you're not my father,” I'd shoot back when he shunned the rest of the family's rice pilaf. Our starch preferences seemed irreconcilable. As I entered my teen years, my palate expanded. After I'd tried and enjoyed brussels sprouts and sushi and escargot, my hatred of one of the most basic and inoffensive of all foods seemed silly. One day at a nice restaurant, I decided to give mashed potatoes one more try. Upon taking my first bite, I realized three things: 1) Mashed potatoes are good. 2) Whatever my dad had been eating at home was not mashed potatoes. 3) My world is built on lies. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/your-review-my-fathers-instant-mashed
Jim Elliot once wrote, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”“Generous” might not be the first word that comes to mind when you think about pro athletes, but Kirk Cousins is rewriting that playbook. The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback in the NFL is using his platform—and resources—for eternal impact. Today, we'll hear how his faith shapes everything from football to finances.Kirk Cousins is the starting quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons and a veteran leader in the National Football League (NFL). He previously spent six seasons with the Washington Commanders and six with the Minnesota Vikings. A four-time Pro Bowler and outspoken man of faith, he is also the cofounder of the Julie & Kirk Cousins Foundation, which supports families and youth through faith-based initiatives.A Legacy of Generosity: Lessons from His ParentsGrowing up as a pastor's kid, Cousins remembers how his parents modeled generosity long before he had a bank account of his own.“My mom had the gift of hospitality,” he says. “Even when I didn't think I needed money, she'd hand me two twenties before I went out with friends. There was just this open-handedness.”While his dad managed the family finances with intentionality, it was his mother's willingness to give freely that left the deepest mark. “It was caught, not just taught,” Cousins reflects, emphasizing how their example shaped his understanding of stewardship early on.From Minimum Wage to Signing Bonuses: A Crash Course in StewardshipWhen Cousins was drafted into the NFL, his first check—a six-figure signing bonus—was a wake-up call.“As a college kid who had never earned more than minimum wage, I didn't know what to do,” he recalls. “I called my dad, and he said, ‘I don't know either!'”That moment marked the beginning of a stewardship journey—one that included learning to give, save, and live below his means in a world of excess. It wasn't easy, especially when surrounded by peers embracing a more lavish lifestyle. But Cousins understood that as an athlete, his income had a shorter runway.“You're approaching a cliff,” he says. “So it's scary to give when your career has an end date. But that's where faith comes in—trusting that God will provide beyond your own earning power.”It would be easy, Cousins admits, to treat financial obedience like a checklist—give, save, repeat. But biblical stewardship isn't about rules; it's about surrender.“I've done that—just checked the boxes. But that's not the abundant life Jesus promises. It's not religion, it's relationship.”He points to Jesus' parable of the treasure in the field (Matt. 13:44): “Once you see Jesus as the treasure, everything else becomes a logical response. Of course you'd sell everything to have Him. Stewardship flows from seeing Him clearly.”When Faith Feels Risky: Giving on a Diminishing TimelineThe tension for Cousins lies in balancing the enjoyment of God's provision with wisdom about the future.“I actually enjoy those moments that require more faith. When I give, and I don't know what's next, it puts the pressure back on God—where it belongs.”But he's quick to acknowledge the gray areas. “What's wise versus what's excessive? There's no formula. You have to walk with God and ask for His guidance daily.”One of the most valuable pieces of advice Kirk received early in his career came from a generous mentor: “Always give in unity with your wife.”That advice stuck.“When Julie isn't comfortable, I pause and pray. Her perspective might be the Holy Spirit speaking. Giving together strengthens our marriage and our stewardship.”Cousins sees their giving not only as a financial decision, but as a spiritual discipline of unity and trust.Planning for the Future: Wisdom Before WealthAs parents to young boys, Kirk and Julie have also had to consider how best to plan their estate. They've established a family office to prepare for the future—but with a strong desire to pass on wisdom before wealth.“We want to get to the end of our lives and say: the wisest hands to put this in are our kids'. But we also want to be realistic. If it wouldn't be wise to pass along wealth, we want our plan to reflect that.”Much of their estate will also go to their foundation, which they hope will be spent down soon after their passing. “We don't want it to live on in perpetuity with intentions we never had. We want to make an impact now.”So, where is Kirk Cousins most excited to give right now? The answer goes back to his roots.“I went to a Christian high school—Holland Christian—and it profoundly impacted my life. I want to make it more affordable for other families, support teachers, and strengthen Christian education.”It's a full-circle moment: a public school kid transformed by Christian community, now investing in the same kind of life-shaping environments for others.Final Whistle: A Life Well StewardedKirk Cousins is more than an NFL quarterback. He's a husband, father, and faithful steward who is using his influence to glorify God—not just in the end zone, but in the quiet decisions of budgeting, giving, and planning for the future. His story reminds us: Stewardship is not about how much we have—it's about how faithfully we respond to the One who gave it all.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:I own my home outright and keep hearing about home title protection services. How real is the risk of title fraud, and should I be concerned?I have rental properties in Arkansas, but my kids in California don't want them. I'm worried that when I pass, they'll sell them quickly for way less than they're worth. Should I go ahead and sell them now and put the money in a trust for my grandkids' education—or is there a better option?”Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)The Julie & Kirk Cousins FoundationWisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Based on his book, Renaissance, Os Guinness calls the current generation the “crunch generation” because the many challenges facing today’s world are converging quickly and need resolution. He asks Christians to pay “focused attention” to listening to non-believers around them in order to connect. Os advises believers to think deeply for themselves when it comes to loving God with their minds. When witnessing, they must ask questions to those questioning Christianity, rather than making statements, allowing the non-believer to think and come to their own discovery of salvation in Jesus. Dr. Linda Varisco had it all — a wealthy upbringing in Long Island, a thriving chiropractic business, and a picture-perfect life. But when her marriage to a crack-addicted, cheating husband imploded, her world spiraled out of control. In a shocking twist, she got entangled with a criminal enterprise running through her business, leading to federal charges for conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. In this entertaining and unfiltered interview, Dr. Varisco reveals how she went from living in luxury to serving a year and a day in federal prison — and how she rebuilt her life from the ground up. #PrisonStories #TrueCrimeInterviews #WhiteCollarCrime #RedemptionStory #WomenInPrison #TrueCrimePodcast #PrisonLife #lockedinwithianbick Buy her books: Book 1: https://www.amazon.com/Girl-Million-Dollar-Smile/dp/B0DQHB6RF6 Book 2: https://www.amazon.com/Journey-Right-Million-Dollar-Smile/dp/B0FB3QNQYW/ref=pd_bxgy_thbs_d_sccl_1/145-3040682-0764748?pd_rd_w=D8Nbx&content-id=amzn1.sym.dcf559c6-d374-405e-a13e-133e852d81e1&pf_rd_p=dcf559c6-d374-405e-a13e-133e852d81e1&pf_rd_r=3YCY59SGYR34T4NQT3WQ&pd_rd_wg=BLygp&pd_rd_r=f534e269-9786-4ee8-bb4b-aec22fae8cac&pd_rd_i=B0FB3QNQYW&psc=1 Follow her: TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thelifeofmrpeaches?lang=en Hosted, Executive Produced & Edited By Ian Bick: https://www.instagram.com/ian_bick/?hl=en https://ianbick.com/ Get 50% off the Magic Mind offer here: https://www.magicmind.com/IANB50. #magicmind #mentalwealth #mentalperformance Presented by Tyson 2.0 & Wooooo Energy: https://tyson20.com/ https://woooooenergy.com/ Use code LOCKEDIN for 20% OFF Wooooo Energy Buy Merch: http://www.ianbick.com/shop Timestamps: 00:00 Prison Stories & Bunkmate Drama 00:22 Introduction: Dr. Linda's Dramatic Life 01:46 Growing Up in Long Island 02:44 Family, Upbringing, and Parental Influence 05:33 Education, College and Career Choices 07:37 Switching to Chiropractic: Inspiration & Path 10:12 Starting Out as a Chiropractor 13:10 Early Business Partnerships and Trouble 16:02 Moving On: Cancun, Romance, & New Beginnings 18:08 Meeting Her Husband & Building the Business 21:02 Business Growth and Early Warnings 23:32 Betrayal, Lawsuits, and Business Collapse 25:43 Family Changes & Financial Struggles 28:08 Discovering Addiction & Heartbreak 32:32 Separation, Divorce, and Parental Challenges 36:46 The Aftermath: Rebuilding Business and Life 41:46 The Wrong Business Partners 44:35 The Big Mistake: Letting Others In 46:32 Warning Signs, Rapid Growth, and Anxiety 49:35 The FBI Raid: Clinic Seized 53:14 The Criminal Case & Legal Nightmare 57:04 Facing Federal Charges 01:00:01 The Trial, Plea, & Sentencing 01:04:09 Processing Prison & Self-Surrender 01:10:07 Prison Life: Friendships, Adjustment & Survival 01:16:16 Daily Reality & Finding Community in Prison 01:23:00 Loss, Tragedy, and Emotional Stories in Prison 01:26:30 Release, Halfway House, and Life After Prison 01:29:37 Rebuilding: New Career and Identity 01:33:31 Public Perception, Judgment, and Sharing the Story 01:36:01 Resilience and Lessons Learned 01:36:44 Final Thoughts, Humor, and Farewell Powered by: Just Media House : https://www.justmediahouse.com/ Creative direction, design, assets, support by FWRD: https://www.fwrd.co Learn more about your ad choices. Zibby interviews debut novelist Jennifer Trevelyan about A BEAUTIFUL FAMILY, a tense, gripping, exquisitely written coming-of-age mystery set on the Kāpiti Coast of New Zealand in 1985. They discuss sisterhood, the awkward threshold between childhood and adolescence, the lingering weight of grief, and the unsettling presence of a stranger next door. Jennifer also talks about her decade-long journey to publication, the discipline that kept her writing before dawn, and why some mysteries are best left a little bit unsolved...Purchase on Bookshop: https://bit.ly/4lC18XCShare, rate, & review the podcast, and follow Zibby on Instagram @zibbyowens! As the world moves away from family, it would be nice if the Church were a beacon of light on a hill. For transparency, here is the transcript from the question given to the Comms Director: "When you first came on board the Church, there was a lot of online flak, should we say, and people even-- I've gotten a few questions here-- asking directly whether or not you support the Family Proclamation? And how was that for you when you first came on board? Has it improved, and how do you deal with that?" Website- cwicmedia.com
Cardon Ellis from Ward Radio joins me on my first joint "walk." We stepped out from the FAIR conference (a great conference and organization) for a few minutes to discuss the Q&A with Church Comms Director, Aaron Sherinian. We talk about some of the ridiculous statements from LDX (online community), discernment between an act and the person, and the background that led to so many people asking the question on his stance on The Family Proclamation to begin with. Also important, the reaction by a loud minority of online trolls against FAIR and even Aaron Sherinian is disappointing. First, FAIR is an incredible organization that I fully support. Scott has done a fantastic job running that organization. Second, please more fully separate the person from the act and focus on the act, not the person. I don't bring these things up to look for a scapegoat or create a witch hunt. But for some, they can't help themselves. I am about the actual issues. In almost all cases, I bring up the event without bringing up a name. Obviously, in this case, that is not possible. Website- cwicmedia.com
This encore episode features passionate human rights advocate Annette Oltmans, and we're talking about covert emotional abuse, one of the most insidious and overlooked forms of domestic violence. If you're in it, have been through it, or suspect something's not right in your relationship, this is one you don't want to miss (or re-listen to). Annette shares her personal experience of prolonged emotional abuse in marriage, along with what she's learned through years of recovery and deep field research. Her work around Original Abuse and Double Abuse® led her to found The M3ND Project in 2016, an organization dedicated to helping survivors name what's happening and start to heal. What you'll hear about in this episode: What motivated Annette to found the M3ND Project Some of the definitions of covert emotional abuse like blame-shifting or minimization of the victim's perspective Annette shares the four pillars of abuse and what drives abusive thinking Realizing you are a victim and changing the worldview of your relationship with your abuser brings on a new layer of stress Abuse recovery and insights and advice for those thinking about repairing their relationship after their partner has begun therapy Learn more about Annette Oltmans: Annette Oltmans is a philanthropist and passionate human rights advocate. Annette's personal experiences of prolonged emotional abuse in marriage and her extensive journey of recovery including comprehensive field research into the topics of Original Abuse and Double Abuse® ignited her passion to founding The M3ND Project in 2016. While seeking the help of professionals and responders, she experienced Double Abuse® in the form of spiritual and institutional abuse. These harmful encounters compelled Annette in her relentless pursuit for solutions that involved interviews with hundreds of victims and survivors. She uncovered common threads that cause victims prolonged states of confusion as well as what ultimately led them towards healing. Her journey also involved interviews with hundreds of faith-based leaders and therapists which led her to discover that most are untrained and ill-equipped to identify and help victims of emotional, verbal, and psychological abuse. In working to prevent and remediate such harm, Annette developed protocoled models that are now being taught and implemented with therapists, churches and professional organizations across the United States. She consulted with esteemed experts in abuse, trauma, and healing to ensure the materials align with the highest professional standards. Annette also serves on the Board of Pepperdine University's Boone Center for the Family and is a Board of Trustee member of Northrise University in Zambia. Her writing on these topics of abuse, domestic violence, and bullying has been published in the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC), Teen Vogue, and numerous other publications. Annette is also a contributing author in the newly released book, “Created to Thrive: Cultivating Abuse-Free Safe Communities”. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwT-unSQu_8 Podcast audio: In this episode of the Ayn Rand Institute podcast, Samantha Watkins and Ben Bayer tackle the common criticism that Ayn Rand is "anti-family" and analyze its philosophical roots. Among the topics covered: ● Debunking the notion that Rand ignores children and parenting;● Rand's Actual View on Children and Parenting;● How choosing to be a parent can be a rational value;● Understanding investment versus genuine sacrifice in parenting;● Why fertility crisis concerns don't justify treating individuals as means to societal ends. Since January, the United States' migrant detention and deportation system, which was already troubled, has become increasingly opaque. Access to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities is restricted, internal oversight agencies have been hollowed out, and credible information about conditions inside is scarce. Yet reports that have emerged, some from those who have recently been deported, tell a troubling story echoing the darkest moments of recent U.S. immigration history. In late July and early August, researchers from WOLA and the Women's Refugee Commission (WRC) set out to pierce this “black box” by visiting cities in Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico that are key deportation hubs. There, they interviewed deported migrants, service providers, advocates, experts, and government officials to learn what they are hearing about conditions in U.S. detention. The findings are disturbing. They point to a resurgence of family separations, cruel treatment, miserable, unhealthy conditions, and deportation processes that violate migrants' rights and dignity. With transparency mechanisms dismantled, these abuses are happening out of public view. In this episode, host Adam Isacson talks with two colleagues from WRC with whom he traveled: Zain Lakhani, WRC's director of Migrant Rights and Justice. Diana Flórez, a consultant to WRC, an attorney and expert on gender, transitional justice, development, and peacebuilding. During their travels, Isacson, Lakhani, and Flórez shared photos and initial findings in four “dispatches” published to our organizations' websites, from Honduras, Guatemala, Tapachula, and Ciudad Juárez. We heard consistent accounts of: Family separations: A larger number than expected of parents deported without U.S. citizen children, often without being given the choice of being removed with them. The crisis is approaching the scale of the “zero tolerance” family separations that shocked the nation in 2018. Inhumane conditions: Overcrowded cells, lack of medical care, and verbal and physical abuse by guards. Threats to the health of pregnant and lactating women and their children: Insufficient and poor-quality food, difficulty in obtaining medical attention, and even being forced to sleep on floors. (The podcast refers to a July 30 report on abuse in detention, especially of pregnant women and children, by the office of Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-Georgia).) Targeting of vulnerable populations: Harassment of LGBTQ+ individuals, especially trans individuals who are now detained with the gender to which they were assigned at birth. As Lakhani notes, “Historically… we were able to enter detention centers and visit them and speak with migrants,” but “now we're seeing the deliberate creation of a black box.” We hope that the WOLA–WRC delegation's findings will guide future, more intensive on-the-ground research enabling advocates to refer egregious abuses requiring legal action, build a rigorous archive of known cases, and inform public opinion and policymakers.
How do you establish a belief in your true identity amid other people's expectations? Host Tina Yeager sits down with Christie Award-winning novelist and former therapist Amanda Cox for a heartfelt conversation on navigating the complex space between others' expectations and our true identities. Together, they explore how the search for belonging, the weight of family dynamics, and the pressure to seek approval can both hinder and reshape our sense of self. Amanda shares her personal journey, professional insights, and the powerful ways her novels—like The Bitter End Birding Society and He Should Have Told the Bees—reflect the challenges and triumphs of embracing who we are truly meant to be. If you've ever struggled to filter out the noise of other voices so you can step boldly into your God-given identity, this episode is just for you. Tune in and discover practical wisdom, encouragement, and hope for your own path toward authenticity and healing. Highlights from the Conversation: Why so many women struggle with identity: Amanda shares how our sense of self is shaped by family, friends, and society—and how we can untangle those outside influences from the truth of who God made us to be. Approval vs. Belonging: Learn the difference between healthy belonging and people-pleasing, and the freedom that comes from living for divine approval rather than human applause. Recognizing your strengths: Are you quiet, observant, or sensitive? Amanda reminds us that what's seen as a “weakness” by others may actually be your God-given superpower. Family dynamics and healing: Ever found yourself slipping back into old patterns the moment you go home? The episode explores how deep-rooted family roles shape us, and practical ways to heal and grow—even when our loved ones don't “get” the new us. Overcoming shame and bitterness: The team discusses the pitfalls of living in the “shoulds” and how forgiving others releases us to become the person God intends us to be. The healing power of fiction: Amanda's novels, including The Bitter End Birding Society and He Should Have Told the Bees, invite readers to process universal emotions like isolation, shame, and hope—showing that fiction can be a gentle guide through real-life challenges.
