208 Moral Responsibility: Could You Have Done Otherwise?

Sunday Letters

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 7, 2021 23:14

Support Sunday Letters One dominant premise we hold is that we can always choose to do or not to do something. However, as Dennett points out in his 1984 essay “I Could not have Done Otherwise-So What?”, most often, the question of choice and responsibility for our actions comes about when results are unfavourable. We want someone to accept blame for a given outcome. The legal system is founded on the idea that we are responsible for our actions, and when we break the social and legal code, we should pay the price. It assumes that given we are compos mentis, we always have a choice of how to act. However, when the outcome is favourable, Dennett points out that we don't question so much in the slightest whether or not the individual could have chosen differently. We accept their assertion that “ah, sure it was nothing” and hardly bring into question their disavowment of responsibility. An interesting point on its own, Dennet suggests, is that when others do well by us, we never question their opportunity to have done otherwise and presents an inconsistency in how we apply it. “I want to be selling my services with confidence and talk about them regularly online”   Before I start working with clients they get a journal prompt document sent to them.    One of the things I see come up, again and again, is they want to be confident with their services and be able to talk about them online.    A big shift for me and my business was when I ACTUALLY started talking about my services, how you can work with me, and what the transformation looks like because yes, we can give all this value and show up online but if you are not talking about your services, how do people know they can work with you?   So when you have this MASSIVE mission on your heart, why is it so difficult to talk about your services?   Here is a couple I see…   Imposter Syndrome  Fear of Judgement  Fear of People Not Buying  Perfectionism  Unsure of Offer & of Price   I am sure you could add to this list.    But I will tell you now, the first place I started was with the belief that I COULD sell my offers, I COULD talk confidently about my offers and people WILL buy!    If you are feeling any of the above or want to be more confident talking about your offer online, work through these journal prompts today and let me know what happens…   Where does the belief in myself sit at the moment when talking about my services online? Where would I like it to be? What does it look like daily if I trust and know that people want to hear about my services? How do I show up online when I believe that people are ready to buy? How does it feel in my body if I believed and trusted that people are ready to buy?   This is just the beginning of the process but it all starts with AWARENESS!   Within my 5 Month 1:1 Container, we cover both Money Making Activities, Business Growth Mindset, and Engaging and Selling to Your Ideal Clients, it's so incredible to see my clients showing up speaking about their services with ease, and converting and it can happen for you too!    CLICK BELOW to book your free discovery call.   Let's Connect: ✨ Book your free discovery call here: https://calendly.com/rebeccahaydonconfidencecoach/60min Free Visibility & Wealth Hypnosis: https://www.rebeccahaydon.com/freebie/ Follow me on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/_rebeccahaydon_/ Follow me on Facebook: www.facebook.com/rebeccahaydonmindset/ Follow me on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rebecca-haydon-executive-confidence-coach-ba2217183/

Guys and Gals, Bad news for you today. The “experts” are wrong. Ever heard this quote?I’m calling BS on that…..I think this is awful advice and makes people broke, unhappy, and wondering if something is wrong with them…..Here’s the truth. We all want the same thing.I think I’m in a good position to speak to the truth of this. For the past 3 years, I’ve worked with 20,000+ entrepreneurs, who all want to start or scale their online businesses. Yes, 20,000.Want to know what they ALL want?Literally every single one of them?Freedom.Time freedom. Choice freedom. “Do what I want when I want” freedom. That’s what people really want. The money? Just a means to an end.So, if we all want the exact same thing, and a business or job is just a VEHICLE to get us there…. why are we worried about what vehicle it is?Let me put it another way….Path #1 - You drive in a Rolls Royce Ghost for 10 years, and end up at your freedom destination. Path #2 - You drive in a beat up 1950’s Honda Civic for 2 years, and end up at your freedom destination.Read those again if you missed the difference. Are you willing to give up 8 years just to get to the same destination “in style?”At the end of the day, you’re still stuck in a car!!!That’s how I feel most people are operating though. They are more concerned with their current pain points in their current job or business, than they are with actually getting to the destination.I’ve literally seen people start a business centered around a product that made them feel more “comfortable” that was BLACK AND WHITE less profitable than another product, and GUARANTEED to slow down their journey to success, THOUSANDS of times. It’s extremely common, and I wish it wasn’t. Here’s the REAL issue with it.I’m all about enjoying what you do, but the problem is, you always end up hating it anyway, because it’s NOT the final destination and EVERY JOB eventually wears on you.I loved basketball more than pretty much anything. I was great at it. But then it turned into a job. And I ended up hating it.Now, I love coaching Entrepreneurs and helping them become successful. But if I’m totally honest with you guys?I’ve still hated it at times. It’s still a job… a means to the true end that is FREEDOM and not HAVING to work if you don’t want to.Honestly, I can speak to that as well.I REALLY started to hate my company and work in general at the times when I had NO CHOICE.I HAD to keep running it.Keep scaling it.Keep growing it.Just to put food on the table.THAT SUCKED. Because I didn’t have a choice. In fact, as a psychology major I can tell you one thing, humans are MOST miserable when they feel they have no choice. There’s this famous experiment where they literally sit people in a chair and shock them. One group gets a button (that does nothing but they don’t know that). They are told, if you press the button you can lessen the intensity of the shock. The other group gets nothing and just has to sit there and get shocked.Guess who experienced EXTREMELY higher levels of pain and anxiety? You guessed it, the ones who had NO CHOICE, no CONTROL over the situation.Want to know when my companies became FUN again? Was it when I molded them into my “perfect lifestyle so I’d never have to work again because I loved it so much? (que the butterflies and rainbows)”… NO.It was when money became non important to the equation.Once I had enough money to realistically retire whenever I wanted, instantly all the stress changed for me.I knew I COULD just stop and go to my eventual freedom destination RIGHT NOW if I wanted to.And that POSSIBILITY ALONE has cleared my mind unlike any “lifestyle planning” or “doing what you love” seminar ever could….So what can you take away from this?Stop acting like your job is supposed to fulfill you. It’s not. It never will. Entrepreneurs, same thing. Your business is not God. It doesn’t complete you.Everyone, including you, no matter how much you lie to yourself, wants the SAME THING. FREEDOM. So take the quickest route to actually achieve that freedom.IMPORTANT: That route might not be easy. Deal with it. It’s better to fight tooth and nail for a short period and achieve what you actually set out to achieve in the first place.Subscribe dang it! This letter is ridiculous. Also share it with someone! Doctors say his condition isn't looking good as he is hooked on life support and in a vegetative state. When he was found a relative who was there explains that paramedics had to recessetate him for 30 minutes and that lack of oxygen to the brain is part of what is making things look difficult for dmx. Kelly Rowland posted a video praying for DMX and his family which caused other celebrities like machine gun kelly and chance the rapper to share their prayers and condolences. The hit 90's rapper has had a long history of drug abuse but hopefully thing turn around for DMX. In lighter news, Kara Keough Bosworth, daughter of “real housewives” star Jeana Keough, announced today on Easter that she is pregnant again. This is big news for Kara as this time last year she lost her son 6 days after his birth due to birth complications. She is excited for her new baby but carries around the memory of her past son and how she relates it to Easter. Kara says, “'For Christians, for Jews, and for me, this time is a reminder of the death of firstborn sons. Sacrifice. Suffering. Mourning. Grief.” Well, her family friends and fans are wishing her good luck on her amazing Easter surprise. Cher apologizes after controversial tweet made by her last Friday regarding George Floyd's murder. George Floyd was murdered last year after cop Derek Chauvin pressed his knee on his neck until he died. This is being brought up again because of the trails going on against Derek Chauvin and the other cops involved. Cher tweeted “'Was talking With Mom & She Said 'I Watched Trial Of Policeman Who Killed George Floyd ,& Cried'. I Said 'Mom,I Know This Is Gonna Sound CRAZY,But.. I Kept Thinking .....Maybe If I'd Been There,...I Could've Helped,'” people were obviously take aback after this tweet. One fan tweeted “I love my Cher but oof. That was a little too white savior complex for me. I know she means well and probably doesn't understand but..honey...no.” Other fans understood that Cher probably meant well and came to her defense. Cher responded today saying “Wrestled With This Twt, Because I Thought some ppl wouldn't understand, Or Believe an Entertainer Could have Honest emotions about a human Being, suffering & Dying, even if It's Only Shown On tv. You Don't Know What I've Done,Who I Am,Or What I Believe.I CAN,I HAVE,& I WILL..HELP.” What do you think of Cher's response?   Why do you do what you do? Are you feeling like you are still in the same place you were 10 years ago? Today we are diving into the NUMBER 1 reason why we make bad decisions and get frustrated... we lose sight of our PURPOSE! Want to know more… Check it out!   OR want the show notes...  Just scroll down!     Listen on Spotify Or iTunes or Youtube Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/leading-from-the-edge   Want to know more? Follow me on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/leadingfromtheedge/ Join the conversation on my website: http://www.leadinfromtheedge.net     Good morning, afternoon, or evening - if you listen to podcasts as I do…    I wanted to take a quick tangent on my podcasts to share a little about why we do what we do…    Now, this podcast is all about how we develop the best versions of ourselves so that we can live out our faith and our leadership to its highest place!   So that we can truly be responsible for those that God has given us charge over, or the opportunity to serve    That goes for pastors, that goes for fathers, that goes for business leaders or new entrepreneurs as well!   But today - I want to talk about your why…   Too often we set goals, we set up dreams but we don't take the time to connect our “why” to our actions, our goals, our jobs, our leading opportunities.   Have you stopped to pray about what motivates you?  Why do you work 40-70 hours a week  Is it so that you did a good job  Is it so that you provided jobs for your employees Is it so that you can have 2 days off on the weekend?    Why is it that you do what you do?  What truly motivates you?    Now - because my faith is what drives me Let's read Matthew 20: 20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedees children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. 21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. 22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye, know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. 23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. 24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren. 25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye, know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; 27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: 28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.     think about what is going on - all these guys are following Jesus, still unrenewed and all of a sudden there is the possibility that two of them are going to be elevated - - what??>    And they got their mom to ask… that's a low blow right?    Well - this story is when we find the reason why Jesus came - we found out his WHY!!! This WHY is what drives him to do what he came here to do!   To minister and to give his life as a ransom for many…   What did you come for? Why are you here and have you taken the time to find out?    When I think about why I am on this planet - I get excited, confused, and overwhelmed at the same time…    I am on this planet to encourage people to become a better, more dogly version of God's plan for their life.    It has been that since I started operating in relationships with Others It is why I raise my kids the way that I raise them It is why every business idea I have, has to be centered around that purpose…    I guess that is another word we could use instead of WHY Purpose…    So - do you know your purpose?  I will tell you - it doesn't come easy And it isn't a 20 question survey to find your purpose…    No this one comes through prayer and seeking the Lord So I am not going to have 3 points on how to find your purpose…  BUT I am going to tell you three things KNOWING your purpose will do for your life and others! 1 - It is your litmus test - when you know why you exist, then when opportunities, jobs, ministry, locations, moves, purchases come top… you can take your purpose and ask… does this line up with that? My purpose is to passionately pursue God by silently serving-man …. Did you know that I am not a pastor of a mega church>? Could I be>? Yes, I believe I Could be - I believe that if I were to start a church that it would grow quickly and it would become as large as we wanted it to be - BUT that is not my call and that is not my role. There is a reason why I have moved from being a pastor…   When you know your purpose - when the GHolyt Spirit has revealed this to you- then you have the perfect litmus test.     Litmus paper stained with litmus is used to indicate the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. So that when a liquid comes into contact with it - you can know its alkalinity or acidity…    In your life - when you have your purpose established then you can line it up to everything and ask… does this fit in>?      2 - Your purpose is your drive - - - if you want to be the strongest - operate in your purpose. You want to have the most energy - operate in your purpose. Want to provide the best for your family and your community - figure out how to operate in your purpose. I know for some listening that may sound irresponsible BUT, my reply back is… how long do you want to live misearble>.     Why do we think we feel unfulfilled in our 9-5 jobs?   Could it be that no matter where you go you will have difficult people to work with, difficult responsibilities, difficult circumstances? I say yes - it is not only possible - it is likely that the problems you are facing are common to man!    That means that we need to rethink why we are there. Sometimes I can do the same job, but with my purpose in front of me all of a sudden, the same job becomes a part of my journey. I can pull the most from my situation when I have my purpose in front of me!     I believe that living in our purpose is the best version of our lives. It is the reason why we have a part in our family visi0on weekends where we walk through what each kid in the family brings to the family. Why is your 3rd child a little quirky and think outside of the box./. Why is your first child more of a dominant type and your 4th child is quiet?     For each of your family members, there is a purpose - a God-given purpose on the inside them, and there is a purpose for them to be in your family. But we have to find that, encourage that, and give room for that.    Now when we are facing an obstacle, we have identified who in our family is the best for helping us through it… those who have disciple, but Also our out-of-the-box thinker!!!     So - use your purpose as a litmus test, use your purpose as your drive And lastly - keep your purpose in front of your eyes~!      I can imagine that Jesus had his purpose figured out at the age of 12… I think that He figured out that He was different and that His life call was amazing    I know some of you are probably thinking that I am off on my interpretation of the Bible - I just believe that he was all god and all man. And I believe that he was tempted in every area - even in knowing his Call on his life…    But moving on - our third point in walking out our purpose… Keep it in front of you   To make decisi0ons about your purpose - you need to keep ut in front of you. WE have been talking about trusting God in our circumstances, the past few podcasts, but this piece is critical to being able to do that. When we know our purpose, then we can look at our situations and line it up and ask… how does this bring life to my purpose.     Write it down, keep it in front of you!  I have my purpose in the signature of my emails I have since 2005 when I discovered my purpose… Can't say that I have always made decisions based on it - sometimes I wanted to move things into more of a spotlight on me…    But then when I found myself back in the presence of God I would be reminded that my role is to passionately uprise God while silently serving-man!     So what is your purpose?  What are you doing to know your purpose?    Can I challenge you to take time this week to seek the Lord to KNOW your purpose?   Maybe fast a meal - maybe stay up late one night and just spend time with God and have him begin to stir in you the unique reason why he chooses YOU!     What I do know is that HE did choose YOU!  You - selected you, positioned you - now be the best version of it -  Not the perfect version but the ever learning version    Because leadership in my onion means that every day you strive to be at least one step ahead,  at least one experience in front of those you have been given the gift of leading . It's not a matter of being the BEST, or  It is not a badge It is not even being the brightest,    it is about having the courage to lead     It takes commitment, persistence, and patient And it takes an everyday God experience    I'm Benjamin Stewart And until next time Go lead from the edge

I  Could tell many people were turned off about even checking in on the pointless kangaroo impeachment that is clearly wasting time and tax dollars while America dies. But according to the Hollywood reporter “TV coverage of the trial on Tuesday afternoon averaged 11 million viewers on broadcast networks ABC and CBS and the three main cable news outlets — CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. The first day of Trump's previous impeachment trial in January 2020 also drew 11 million viewers across six networks, including NBC. MSNBC grabbed the largest audience with 2.87 million viewers from 1-5:15 p.m. ET, a little ahead of the 2.66 million who watched the trial on CNN. Fox News averaged 1.95 million viewers, followed by ABC (1.8 million) and CBS (1.74 million), according to Nielsen fast national ratings.” So apparently 11 million people are either curious or are getting their last fix of TDS mainlining the delusion while it’s still in its rawest form. Welcome to episode 303… and specifically… part two in our brand new series called “The gift of being fully present.” This series is specifically designed to help you to live more fully in the PRESENT.  Because if we can fully live in the moment more often… THEN… we can soak up more of the good stuff.  AND bring more of the good stuff into the world too.  That means loving well... bringing excellence... and having more fun... even in 2020!  It means taking action when and where we need to AND it also means resting… actually resting... and finding a sense of peace... once in a while too!  I know… I know… it's a big task… especially with the goal of keeping these episodes to under 15 minutes… but I think we're up for the task.  So… let's get to this!   RESOURCES: PART 1 of the Give the Gift of Being Fully Present: www.mitchmatthews.com/302 2 Minutes to Confidence. mitchmatthews.com/246 MORE ABOUT THE EPISODE: (The Transcript) Okay… so last week… in episode 302… we talked about WHY we want to live more in the present… more in the here and now. Plus… in that last episode… we talked about starting with a simple experiment. That was catching yourself sometimes and asking the question, What am I doing... right now? And then to take a deep breath as you do. It's a simple 2-step exercise… but I know it's been a bit of a game-changer for me.  How about you?  How did it go? Did you find yourself using the question to edge yourself back… ever so slightly... to the here and now?  I heard from some of you. In fact, long-time Canadian DREAM THINK DOer “Cathy B” let me know that when she was feeling on the verge of distraction and overwhelm… she used the exercise.  One specific example she offered was… when it helped her to feel grateful for an email she'd just received from her daughter.  It was a simple email… but it was about something Cathy‘s been dreaming about and working on for a while.  She said the exercise of just pausing… and taking a deep breath… and coming back the moment…   during such a simple thing as reading an email…   The question… and the deep breath… helped her to truly take in that moment and appreciate the email… and the effort that her daughter took to write it.  She said it really warmed her heart… and made that moment even more special.  She didn't miss it. How cool is that?  Let me know how it went for you!  I want to hear from you. Okay… well… with THIS episode, I also promised to do three things: Get you some brain science  Help you to beat the “distraction habit”  AND… give you a new question to experiment with  SOME BRAIN SCIENCE TO LIVE MORE IN THE PRESENT: Okay… so you guys know I'm fascinated with the brain.   I was a solid C+ science student in high school and college… but since then… I've just fallen in love with studying how our brain works… and how… if we understand those things… we can do things to dream bigger… think better and do more of what we were put on the planet to do. Well… the brain is wonderfully and beautifully made… and there are soooooo many aspects to it… that we could talk for YEARS on all the different facets and aspects that are happening in our math cans as we're working on living in the moment more…  BUT since we're keeping things short and I want to get right to something that's going to help you immediately… I want to really key in on TWO main areas of the brain. THE TWO PARTS WE'RE GOING TO TALK ABOUT TODAY ARE:  The basal ganglia and the prefrontal cortex. Now… if you're a big fan of talking about the brain… give me a fist pump in the air and say… “I'm all in.” BUT if you're not… hang with me because we're going to explain things in a way where it will help you to be more present… AND you'll be able to impress your friends at your next Zoom dinner party! First… we'll talk about the basal ganglia.   It's what I call the brain's “Project Manager.” It's the part of our brain that is constantly looking for patterns… systems… subconscious checklists… and you guessed it… habits.   It's primary job is to try to figure out ways of doing things… so the brain doesn't have to work as much. Just like a good project manager, it loves to tell the rest of the brain, “Hey… relax… just do your thing.  I've got this!”   For example… the basal ganglia is the part of your brain that allows you to hop in your car and drive to the store… BUT when you pull into the store's parking lot… you catch yourself thinking, “Wow.  I remember leaving my driveway… but I couldn't tell you one other thing about that drive!” I bet you know EXACTLY what I'm talking about… but here's something you can do for fun… to really experience the full power of YOUR basal ganglia.   Here's an experiment.   If you want to mess with your basal ganglia… if you want to “prove” to yourself that it's there…  When you go to do your bedtime routine tonight…  brush your teeth with the opposite hand you normally use.   Seriously… your BG will try to wrestle you to the ground because it's saying, “BUT WAIT… THAT'S NOT HOW WE DO THINGS!!!” Or… as you drive to the store next time… take a street you NEVER take.   Yes… it might add a total of 2 minutes to the trip… but do it.  YOUR inner-project manager will revolt… BUT this kind of exercise is REALLY good for you so you can feel your Basal Ganglia in action. But this type of experiment is also really good because it REALLY helps to wake up the second part of the brain we're going to talk about next. And THAT is the PREFRONTAL CORTEX.   The Brain's PFC is the brain's BIG BOSS. It's designed to override a lot of the systems in the brain. BUT like a good boss… in order to work it's magic… it has to be engaged. The basal ganglia is constantly looking for ways to say to the boss, “Don't worry about a thing!  I've got a system for that.”   Or… “Work on other stuff, I've got a process for that.” Don't get me wrong… the basal ganglia doesn't have bad intentions.   It's just looking for systems to make life easier. HOWEVER… it's just NOT always a good judge over whether those systems work.   Enter the “distraction habit.” Think about it.   As you've probably seen in documentaries like “The Social Dilemma” or TED talks about how things like social media… or even… email can make our brains explode with dopamine and serotonin because of the sense of feedback… variety… and novelty.   Now, we're not going to get into whether all of that is inherently good or bad… in THIS episode… but when you think about the little bit that we've talked about already… you can imagine that if the basal ganglia has figured out that IF we start to feel anxious, overwhelmed and / or uncomfortable… which is kind of the 2020 trifecta… it makes sense that the basal ganglia would say, “Don't worry about it!  I've got something that will make things better.”   And then move you to a “distraction habit.” Because… it's learned… when we move into the “distraction habit” of grabbing your phone… your brain receives a burst of dopamine and serotonin.   And just like how you get lost in thought on your drive to the store… and you wind up driving into that parking lot thinking, “How the heck did I get HERE???”   The same thing can happen when we grab our phone or hop on our computer to just check social for a second…  Maybe you've had the same experience where you've just found your phone in your hand… and your thumb is scrolling… and you find yourself saying, “I don't even remember taking this thing out of my pocket.” Or… “How long have I been doing this?” I won't say who… but someone recently totally confessed that they thought they had a toilet ring permanently tattooed to their butt… because they'd gotten so caught up in social… while “taking a break,” they spent an hour in the bathroom… and could barely walk when they went to stand up.  I know… nasty.  LOL.  BUT maybe you can identify! So here's the thing.  The basal ganglia is neither good nor bad inherently… BUT it is a creature of habit.  Actually, it's a CREATOR of habit. So we need to be intentional about the habits we're walking out. The good news is that the prefrontal cortex can TOTALLY override the basal ganglia… and one of the best ways to do that is through a good question.  Because a question engages the Prefrontal Cortex… it brings it into the mix.  It steps in and says, “Wait… what are we doing?  And… just as importantly... WHY are we doing it? Makes sense… right?  And that's exactly why we experimented with our first question last week!  And why we're going to introduce a NEW question this week.   So… our question for this week is:  “What do I want to do right now... intentionally?” Oh… You can still take that deep breath after asking it… and that's good! But with this question… I want you to take an action that helps your body to get on board.  Move in some way. Snap your fingers. Clap your hands. Raise a fist pump in the air. Take some action… big or small. If you've ever heard Tony Robbins talk about this kind of movement… you could say that this kind of thing would allow to have a “STATE CHANGE.” By the way… if you want to learn more about this and the science behind how THIS type of thing works… check out episode 246 called “2 minutes to confidence.   mitchmatthews.com/246 It will make a difference. Okay… so let's recap.  So here's the specific experiment for this week. If you feel distracted or you want to feel more in the moment: Ask the question.   “What do I want to do right now... intentionally?” That's right.  Engage the prefrontal cortex.   Ask yourself what YOU ACTUALLY want to be doing. Last quick example:  I'll say I used this just this past weekend.   I had a lot of stuff I could be working on… and I was starting to go there as I was at the dinner table with my family.  I started to drift to all the stuff I COULD be doing or I SHOULD be doing… but I asked the question,  “What do I want to do right now... intentionally?” And it brought me back to an amazing conversation about how The Madolorian is one of the best… if not the best TV show of all time. Priceless.   Loved it. I didn't miss the moment… and I'm soooo grateful. And that's what I want for YOU too… THIS WEEK!!! It's like that awesome quote from Jim Elliot…  “Wherever you are, be ALL there.”  Try it out. And just see what it does for you. It may not be easy. Heck… your basal ganglia may resist it at first. BUT… as you do it… your basal ganglia will start to come around and start to set up NEW patterns and sequences. So being IN the moment… and being more present… becomes your NEW go-to habit too! Give it a try and let me know how it goes. EPISODE MINUTE BY MINUTE 0:02 Welcome to part two 2:45 Part one recap 5:38 How Brain Science affects you being present 7:07 Exercises for your basal ganglia 12:40 How movement actually helps you stay resent 14:48 Be all there I WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU! Let me know how the experiments are going for YOU!  Leave a comment about something that's worked for you or let me know where and how you've experimented with the questions.  I can't wait to hear from YOU!!! For more, head over to: www.franexcell.com/   To sign up for The Positive Pants Planner Waitlist: https://www.franexcell.com/pppwaitlist/ In the last episode we talked about what procrastination is, what it’s not and how to find out why you might be doing it.  If you haven’t listened to that one yet make sure to go there first.   It’s hugely important to work that stuff out first before you can find the ways of overcoming it that are actually going to work for you because it’s highly individual and some of it hugely deeply rooted.   I promised i’d give you some ways to overcome it once you’ve idenitified the what, the why and the how of YOUR procrastination.   So what can we do in practical terms now we understand more about what’s underpinning the issue?   If you know motivation is the issue.   What’s behind that lack of motivation?   Are you lacking motivation because you’re in the danger zone - it’s a concept from Tony Vee.     If you were to rate your life right now out of 10, where would it be?     Anything 6 or below is actually a GOOD thing, because you’re motivated enough to change things.     Change only happens when the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of change.  That’s a bastardised Tony Robbins quote for you there.    The danger zone is when you’re around a 7/10.  Why?? You’re comfortable being uncomfortable.     You’d love for things to change but you’re not motivated enough to do whatever it takes, this can create a low mood and cognitive dissonance, where you feel like 2 parts of you are battling against each other.  Then comes good old procrastination!   You consciously want something but your unconscious is working to make damn sure everything stays the same.    So when you know motivation is at the heart of your procrastination, what can you do? Don’t wait to ‘feel like it’ it’s highly likely to never happen.   Go back to WHY you want to do it in the firstplace. But really WHY.  Not a surface level one. So whatever you’ve landed on keep asking, and what does that give me? You’ll soon hit the real reason.   Connect to how you’ll feel once it’s done. This is some of the future you connection.   Connect to the consequences of NOT doing it!    Bribe yourself.  We’ve talked about the rewards feeling too far away, what can you do to bring the rewards closer? Create icro goals that have a reward along the way. Find a better reward than the avoidance gives you.   Motivation follows action.     Use Mel Robbins 5 second rule to 5-4-3-2-1 and start.  Give yourself 5 minutes.  Tell yourself you’ll do it for 5 minutes.  Research shows that 80% of people who start will keep going!   Put things in place to make it as easy as possible.  Accountability is your friend! If I had listened to my MANY excuses when It came to launching The Positive Pants Podcast I  would have listened to the ‘I’m no good at tech so there’s no way I can produce my own show’.    I would have listened to the ‘there are already so many amazing podcasts with much bigger names who’d want to listen to mine’ or the ‘I don’t have time’ gremlin, the impostor syndrome (all the inevitable mindset gremlins that come along with stepping outside your comfort zone!)   I just would have not started...because I didn’t know where to start!   I made a commitment to myself that it was going to happen.   I knew it was going to be my ‘thing’ and I knew I would love it.  BUT, there were some SERIOUS gremlins to get through first.  So I put structures in place so I could overcome that (you’ll see why that’s so important shortly!).    I paid £700 per month for someone else to set up and produce my show for the first few months but knew it was a crazy monthly outgoing that I didn’t really want to pay for something I COULD do myself if I got over my ego.    I did this so I would then be on the hook to listeners and i’d HAVE to learn AND I was 100% accountable to someone else so I had to get the content across.   I would have to ‘get over myself’ essentially. Get over my ego, my unconscious thoughts, my limiting beliefs and all that lovely stuff. I started recording them for early access in my group at the same time every week...again, so I was on the hook!   Then once I started getting listeners I was on the hook anyway because people were expecting episodes...and here I am excuse free and over 150 episodes later, over 150k download, often in the top 100 and in your earbuds every week it also being my biggest referrer of clients. Public accountability is your friend!  So what can you put in place to make it as easy as possible for you?  An easy example would also be, if yu want to start running to lay out your clothes at night.  If you want to eat better, batch cook your meals.  So what can you put in place in your business? Want a few more tangible tips when overwhelm is at the helm?  Gotcha covered. Change up your environment - Get rid of any distractions, lock your phone in a drawer or put it in another room.  Even knowing it’s there is enough to make you reach for it because you get a dopamine hit every single time! Think about what you can delegate.  If it’s outside your zone of genius or you hate doing it, find someone who loves it.  Get it off your plate.  Then you’re moving forward by stepping back! Chunk things down and have tangible smaller goals so you can get the easy wins! Make sure you’re working to deadlines.  This will help with any overwhelm.   My favourite tip for overwhelm is the scary brain dump to do list so you’re always focusing on 3 things you’re looking to achieve, instead of your entire to do list which will NEVER end. I’ve got a template on my website for this but if you have any questions let me know.   Productive procrastination.  If you are in the procrastination zone, you can use a state change technique but find your helpful ways to procrastinate so you’re still getting something done that needs doing and you beat yourself up far less. Think cleaning, clearing (helps with the environment!) walk the dog. But the trick is to put a time on it and agree with yourself that after that time you will do 5 minutes work.   Observe it, recognise it, give yourself some compassion. Learn to regulate your nervous system so the stress response isn’t so strong.  You can use my stressed to success meditation for exactly that.  You can grab that at https://bit.ly/stressedtosuccess   Most importantly work out the why and the how for YOUR procrastination. From YEARS and over 6 figures invested in my education in this space, thousands of hours spent reading or in the classroom and from my own life experiences...I’ve done the hard leg work to work this stuff out. You have to overcome your unconscious mind.  BUT it’s 100%possible Conclusion: There are MANY reasons why people procrastinate.  The key is to finding out why YOU do.   To help create the awareness it’s important to understand HOW you procrastinate.  What your patterns are.   Go a little deeper to uncover the thought process and beliefs that are unconsciously running the show and make them conscious.   Know what to put in place that’s going to make it as easy as possible for you to NOT procrastinate.   Remember it’s not your fault!  There’s nothing ‘wrong’ with you, you actually have a really good internal protection mechanism. It just needs to understand you’re safe! Fx

Our monthly installment of You Ask, We Answer. Where we answer all sorts of questions from our listeners. Question 1: An inspiring discussion about a dress from a member of our FB Community I've got some real dress drama. I got my dress Dec 2019. I fell in love with this dress-- like, this one was "the one." Best part was I LOVED the color, because it's pink! I also got it for a real steal-- $100 instead of $1200 because it was 90% off! But everyone HATED my pick, even my mom. A couple of people in my bridal party let it slip to my fiancé what I was wearing, too, because they didn't like it either. Now my original wedding date has passed and every time I look at my dress, I get sad thinking about what I lost I have another year before this wedding happens-- if it doesn't get canceled again. I'm wondering if I should go shopping for something else. I know it doesn't matter what other people think, but I don't know if I can be happy when I know my closest family and friends think I'm wearing an ugly dress (and have made it clear they think it's awful) Some of the comments and responses on FB: “umm...fuck. those. people. your day, your dress. you get to wear whatever you want and if you feel like a fucking queen in this dress, then you wear it” _“I am truly sorry people need to put you down to feel good about their choices and decisions. A new dress isn't going to change others vitriol. And because I'm 100% that bitch- your body is your body. A more white, sleeved or whatever they want dress isn't going to change that.” “I hate that the people who should be supporting you made you feel bad. it's your day and you should wear whatever you love and what makes you feel your best. It's a beautiful dress! People tend to hate things that are outside of their comfort zones. Im sure you've had to make a lot of sacrifices and changes from your original wedding plans due to COVID, so if this is the dress you see yourself marrying the love of your life in, then don't let this be another thing you have to give up” Update from Bride: "So I scheduled a bridal appointment today at a different salon I went to originally. I was having mixed feelings when I walked in. By the time I tried the first dress on, I was thinking, 'That's it, I need a new dress!' My first one just can't compare with these. I tried on around seven dresses. I only found one that I liked. As they put the veil on, I had the thought, 'This is what I want to look like on my wedding day.' But I didn't get the fluttery butterflies or happy feelings I did before. There was no emotion. It was just, 'Okay, this is what is expected of me.' Then I realized I was actually tailoring my idea of what I wanted to look like on my wedding day to what everyone ELSE had in mind for me-- some picturesque perfect Hollywood wedding that was so standard it could fit anybody, but didn't really say "me." "It was then I figured out that no matter how many dresses I tried on or how many salons I went to, it would be a waste of my time because I'd already found exactly what I wanted-- my pinky, pretty princess dress." "I think the final decision came after the stylist told me my choice of dress would be close to $5,000. $5k compared to the $100 I'd spent on my original pick? There was just no contest. I kept seeing all the things I COULD do with $5k rather than spending all of it on a dress that I was only okay with, a dress that was meant for pleasing other people instead of just myself." "And then it all came to a head just how much of a box people had been trying to stuff me in my entire life instead of just allowing myself to be... me. I thanked the stylist, gave them an awesome review on The Knot (they really were a great salon) then hiked myself home to try on my original pinky dress. It wasn't as sparkly, or expensive, or dramatic as the ones I'd just tried on, it was a bit wrinkled from being abandoned in my closet, and the gems need a bit of shine, but it's MINE. So I'm happy to say that on my wedding day, I'll be wearing pink and anyone who doesn't like it can go suck an eggplant, because I'm no longer here for that noise." Question 2: Alone Time My fiance and his family are very against the first look. I totally get it with tradition and all but have you seen any other fun ways for the bride and groom to have a moment alone on the wedding day? I have heard of the meal alone but we talked about it and we both think we would feel rushed and like we need to get to our party. I am open to ideas! Thanks! Answer 2: For a little time 'just the two of you' on the wedding day - I think it doesn't have to be much time to feel special and to give you two a bit of time to connect and take it all in a little. I have three suggestions: 10 minutes to eat and freshen up before you enter the reception. After all of the formal photos post-ceremony. Everyone else goes to cocktail hour and you can take 10ish minutes alone to chug some water, freshen up, and eat some of the passed apps. It takes a little planning - you need a place to go and someone to bring you these things, but it's a nice little breather before you join the party - cause once you do, you won't really be alone for the rest of the event! First look in the reception hall or ballroom - if your venue has separate areas for cocktail and reception, you two can sneak into the reception area while everyone else is at cocktail hour. Usually the wedding planner or catering manager brings you in for this. You get a chance to take it all in alone, and you can see all of the planning and details before everyone comes in. I love the photos of this moment because it's like a reveal and the looks on the couples faces are usually so happy! End of the night - solo dance. This is a really sweet moment that happens at the very end of the night. All of the guests clear out (maybe they're outside getting ready for your grand exit...) and you both stay back in the reception room, with the photographer and DJ. Think candlelight and a love song. You have your last dance here, just the two of you. It's even romantic if the catering staff is still clearing out in the background. Question 3: What to do with my fiancé and his groomsmen/ushers on the morning of the wedding? Our ceremony is at a church about 15 minutes away from our reception venue (a hotel). My bridesmaids and I will getting ready at the hotel in a large suite with plenty of room for us. The guys are planning on getting breakfast and then getting ready before the photographer arrives just after lunch. Can the guys just get ready in their own hotel rooms? Do we need a separate space for them to gather? Is it okay then for the photographer to get a couple shots just in someone's hotel room? There are 7 guys total including my fiancé..so that seems like a lot for one regular room. I am sure that they can take photos in the lobby (it's an old and very photogenic hotel), but should I plan to get them an extra room (like a meeting room space or suite?) Answer 3: Couple thoughts about this - in my experience, it's very helpful if the men have a set place to gather pre-wedding, just like the ladies. It's good to know everyone is where they are supposed to be, and it makes things easier in terms of planning and timing for the day. Photographers will agree with me here. The 'getting ready' shots aren't the same for the guys...but they still happen. Finishing touches, putting on jackets, maybe a toast in the room, stuff like that. They can relax and have some fun before the festivities of the day really get started. A hotel room is best for this, since you'll have one, so you can be on different floors. It can be a groomsman's room, but if you were to want more space, get a suite or an upgraded room. (I feel like guys like chairs to sit in - so a suite would have those when a regular room wouldn't - something to think about!). Having some outdoor space like a patio is nice. But the main thing is that they're all in one place -- and their stuff is in that place too. So someone needs a key, and I don't think it should be your groom's room where this happens. He'll potentially have extra crap in his room if it is and he won't want to deal with it - whether he's sleeping in that room or not. (You'd be surprised how many half empty water bottles, random pairs of pants, and stuff like that ends up in the 'getting ready' room.) The way it usually works is that the girls all get ready in the big suite and that suite is the one that the couple stays in on the wedding night. (So your girls are going to have to come back at some point and move their crap and clean up a little for you to come back to a nice, peaceful room after the wedding. Trust me, this is usually something I do for my brides!). And the guys get ready in an extra room that you book, or in a single groomsman's room. It's convenient for the guys to have a place to meet up in the morning just like you will be doing. Photos in the lobby or outside will likely still happen, but the photographer can meet them in the room first and go from there. Hope this helps! No need to schedule something for them to do or anything like that. Just have plenty of water, good music playlists, maybe some booze - and you can even stash some possible necessities in the room for them - like snacks, extra masks, deodorant, mouthwash, etc. Gifts if your fiancé is doing those... Voicemail Question: My original wedding date was in May, and so it did not go on as planned. We eloped and rescheduled the wedding for next year. How we can prevent this from just feeling like a party? How do we keep the vows and introductions from feeling theatrical? How do we recapture that magic? Answer: We get it. The second time doesn't capture the same energy or magic. But don't think of this as a re-do. You are legally married and that was its own event. But this is a different event. There is no certainty but you can start to get excited about this new event. You'll be with people you probably have not seen in a long time. Celebrating YOUR marriage. Drop the things that didn't excite you in the original planning, just do this wedding party your way. There are no rules anymore! An hour twice a week after work to hit a medium sized bucket. $9 bucket x 2 times a week = $18 a week x 4 weeks / month = $72 a month. I wonder for $72 a month stretched over an entire year what that would cost me...$864. Then add in my time value spent at the driving range, when I COULD be in my garage. That math and time equation led me to believe I could build a DIY golf simulator and save time and money. DIY Golf SimulatorThe first key is space. I recommend you have an area in your garage with enough ceiling clearance (8 feet minimum but 10 feet is recommended) and length (20-25 feet length) to install everything you need for a home simulator. If you don't have the space - STOP right now and move along. Keep hitting your buckets at the range and find a good all weather driving range for those rainy days. If you have the space and you are ready to continue - let's break down what you need. In this episode we look at what goes into a DIY golf simulator from start to finish. 56: How To Write Your First Book

She Who Overcomes

Have you ever wanted to write a book? I started writing my first book when I was in 8th grade. It was a murder mystery. I got to chapter seven and then gave up because it was taking too long. That book never saw the light of day. The second book I tried writing was around 2005. I was working as a Property Manager and worked 40 hours a week. The job really only took 25 to 30 hours a week, leaving me with 10 hours to twiddle my thumbs and hope the phone rang so I can answer questions. That left a ton of time on my hands. So I started writing my second book. It was going to be called “The Road Less Traveled.” I barely wrote a chapter. I spent most of my time trying to see myself through the eyes of my friends growing up so I interviewed them to gain perspective. I wasn’t exactly thrilled at what I found. And I certainly didn’t know myself well enough back then – I clearly needed to dive into personal development so I could get comfortable with my own thoughts so I COULD actually write. Because the truth is this: I was so afraid of what others would think of me, that I couldn’t follow through on the writing. Or even coming up with a concept to write about. I self-published my first actual book in 2011. How did I go from being afraid of what others would think in 2005 to writing my book, publishing it, and selling it in 2011? It took a ton of personal growth and development. People come up to me all the time and tell me they want to write a book. I’ve lost track of how many people I’ve heard say that. Or they say something like, “People always tell me I should write a book because I have so much life wisdom.” Writing a book is hard. And, no offense, but I typically don’t believe people when they say they want to write a book one day because the reality of writing it is harder than the romanticized idea of it. And the majority of people do not have the discipline to follow through. Now, that statement probably just turned a bunch of you off and made you feel like you can’t succeed so why even try. But for those of you that got CHALLENGED by that statement, hang on. This episode is for YOU: the one that really really really does want to write a book and is finally ready to start. There’s a difference between WANTING to write a book some day and already working on writing a book. Today’s episode is going to be a raw, no BS guide to what it takes to actually WRITE your first book. Not how to publish it. Now how to market it. Now how to design the cover and get people excited about it. No. How to write it. Because if you do all the other things but never actually write the content, you will fail. You will be living in a fantasy only. So I’m going to give you some tips to help you WRITE your first book, and some pitfalls to watch out for that will trick you into thinking you are writing, when you are actually…not. TIPS TO HELP YOU WRITE YOUR FIRST BOOK: 1. Journal daily. Writers, write. Every day. And journaling is how you start. If you want to write a book about the lessons you’ve learned in life, you’ve got to get real with yourself and write it all in your journal first. You will never write a book if you can’t process your own thoughts and feelings. 2. Start a blog. This helps you put content out there that connects with your potential audience. It gives you a chance to practice being judged by readers (you’ve got to grow a thick skin if you’re going to write a book), but it also helps you learn what your readers want to know. 3. Read a TON of books! All kinds. Non-fiction. Fiction. Books about topics you aren’t sure about, don’t agree with, or even people that see things differently than you do. 4. Do a 30-Day Blog Challenge on 1 topic and turn that content into your book. This is how I wrote my first Bible Study, UNASHAMED. It is a great way to get readers involved in it too! Then you can have conversations with them in the comments of your blog and learn how they are identifying with the content.

Greetings Gunn Runner Two new singles are coming out. Selcouth progress report. Something new and different for my live streaming concerts. New songs written. And would you like to stay with me in a castle in Scotland? Another month down. Another to begin. Let’s talk about it... on show #267. 0:21 - PODCASTS The toughest thing about making podcasts is coming up with a concept. What is the show about? For the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, it's easy. I don't usually do themes. Because they are hard to create. Even the Celtic Running Music show I ran this week. It had to pick out a good running rhythms and tap out the tempos to make sure the show picked up speed as you ran. It's much easier to just create a show and then name it after a song or an organic theme. I can't create that podcast and stress about a theme if I want to put it out every week. That's the problem I'm having with the Pub Songs Podcast. Some days I come up with a theme. Others, I have no idea. Then the show keeps getting pushed back. That's what happened with the Gen Con show. It was a couple days late before I was struck with the thought, DUH! I can just call it the Gen Con show and promote those shows. That makes the second show of August a little easier. I can make that the Dragon Con show. I still don't know what to do for the first episode. So if you have a theme idea, let me know. The other episode I did in July was a replay of Coffee with The Celtfather where I highlighted the songs of Rie Sheridan Rose. It's amazing that we've been writing songs together for probably 18 years. It's just mind-blowing. I'm so fortunate to have her helping me create music. My only sadness is that I hadn't done that episode sooner. That theme issue put Stories from the Road on the back burner this month too. I just didn't think to publish it. And here we are at the end of the month. Mikey and I published the final Firefly episode of the In the ‘Verse podcast. This was for Objects in Space. I'll be honest. I was surprised in this months Celtfather Live that I got a song request for that song. I kinda felt it was a throw away. But guess we shall see. 2:51 - VIDEOS I published two video singles this month: "The Mermaid" and "Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits". They were both from Andrew McKee's Life's a Faire webcast in June. "The Mermaid" has done pretty well with 186 views as I type. I was surprised that "Don't Go Drinking With Hobbits" didn't do better. But I guess that's the random nature of the beast. Some songs get caught up in the algorithm and do well. Others don't. The best thing about that Life's A Faire broadcast is I learned how to create video singles FROM video concerts that are posted on YouTube. This means if I get a good recording of a song or two during Coffee or Celtfather Live, I can always repost it as a video single. Boo-yah! One of the big projects in July was recording a Firefly Drinking Songs concert for Gen Con and Dragon Con. This was super cool because it was scripted show. I learned how hard it would be to create a TV series. Oy! That's because I recorded each section live. I scripted what I would say. And I tried to tell a story. The story is basically that I hijack the Cortex in order to broadcast a Bob Hope style concert for the Browncoat troops fighting during the Unification War in Firefly. It ends in disaster. It was fun to create. But it also took much of the day. And I'm still uncertain if the video quality is not as good as it should've been. You can get tickets to watch the Firefly Drinking Songs show at Gen Con. I'll tell you more about it later. As for the Dragon Con version, there are a couple parts that are different. And I'm hoping it'll broadcast on Dragon Con TV. Oh! And Mikey Mason is a guest as usual during both shows. My live streaming video concerts ran into some problems this month. Some are still not resolved as I type. Our internet router is on the complete opposite side of where my office is. So when my internet extender died right before the Celtfather Live concert this month, I've been living with crappy infrequent internet access. It's very frustrating. Coffee with the Celtfather is a challenge because of that. That said, I have a 150' chord to plug directly into the router for a special project with Andrew and a new extender is on its way. Here's hoping I can do something in time for my live streaming shows at Gen Con next week. 6:10 - IN THE STUDIO Moments before typing this I finished recording "Together", the Krabbe Connect song I mentioned last month. I got the final tracks from Daniel Briggs. He recorded bass, mandolin and octave mandolin for the song to give it a more Celtic feel. It's hilarious. As I was finishing the mix, I realized I COULD share it on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast because I added this mando reel to the intro to turn this sort of pop song into a Folk Pop song. LOL. I love it. It has a great sound. And again, as I was listening, I realized the song could actually go beyond the Krabbe Connect world. So that's an extra WIN in my book. That is not the only song I'm getting ready to release. Sam Gillogly and I confirmed that we are going to release an album called Dancing With Hobbits. This is an idea that came from the last ALEP. That's the hobbit gathering in Kentucky that I talk about a lot. We talked about recording an instrumental album of original dance music for hobbits. We recorded a track several years ago after the last ALEP, I think. That's when we started talking about this idea. But a week ago, Sam and I finally confirmed that we would make an album together. But we're gonna do it by releasing singles. The goal is to put out one a month until we release the album late next year in time for the next ALEP which is currently delayed until 2021. I am excited about this for several reasons. One of the big ones is that I LOVE traditional style Celtic music. The tunes. But because I play the autoharp, I don't really record many. Yeah. I CAN. But I don't. It just doesn't sound right. But get me a fiddle player... So hopefully, I'll have lots of new tunes to share via the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast in the months to come. Now i just have to figure out what tune comes first. And to stay on that schedule. The first one is called "Hobbit Hornpipe". I'm trying to get permission to share it with Patrons. But I'll let you know if that's possible. I made progress on Selcouth too. My parts for "Breathing" are laid. I think I need to re-record one more vocal for "Bright Side of Everything". But it's close to being done. I also laid down a track for "Kilty Pleasure", "Favor of Dance", and "Tough Times". That's pretty good progress. Though I'm already worrying about hitting my October/November deadline for Kickstarter supporters. Finally, I wrote and recorded another new song called "Back in the Ocean". It's a story about a male selkie who goes to land, has some fun, and decides life on land ain't all it's cracked up to be. He's much happier back in the ocean. 13:15 - MERCH I have not touched my Bandcamp store in quite a while. Not since I posted those new Celtic Heartstring necklaces a couple months ago. No doubt this is one reason I'm not selling great over there. But I'm happy just be creating right now. So if you haven't been, check it out. Buy something. 13:36 - TRAVEL I'm jonesing to travel. I love traveling. So I've been back on YouTube watching videos of Scotland and other places in Europe. I can't wait. I am researching the 2021 Celtic Invasion of Scotland. In fact, I booked a castle in Helensburgh, Scotland. The dates for the invasion are June 5-12. Obviously, that's assuming we are able to get out of the country to go there. But I can't hang on that. So I'm gonna plan right now. 14:51 - WEBSITES Not much is new for the Irish Song Lyrics website. Slipped out of my priorities. I still need to do the lyrics for the latest Pub Songs Podcast episodes. 15:07 - SHOWS PLANNED FOR AUGUST I don't know if I have said this before. But booking for the forseeable future will be tentative. I had two physical shows in July in Birmingham. Both were canceled. I'm booked at Pepper Place Farmer's Market in Birmingham in mid-August. I'm assuming that will be canceled too. So if there's a date on my schedule. Check in with me or the venue a few days before to see if it's happening. So, you’ve realised you’re not exactly living how you want to...or doing what you want to...what now?!   This is a question that came up from one of my lovely listeners and I thought it was actually the perfect time to cover it, what with all the waking up to our unconscious thoughts and all that.   With so many people realising they may have followed a path that was from someone else’s idea of what the ‘right’ thing to do was, or someone else’s idea of what’s possible and not their own, it’s time to have a little chat.   There’s a couple of camps you may be in right now as I know I have lots of listeners who already have businesses, and lots who want to start one...or achieve something big at least.   So, you might be in camp one where you listened to your parents idea of what success ‘should’ look like.  Or your siblings, teachers etc.  Authority figures from when you’re young.   So you go along with it, go through school, pick your GCSEs, A-Levels, Go to University, start at the bottom of the corporate ladder and work your way up.  Right?     You’ve ticked all the boxes so you should be happy right?   No?   So what gives?!   I see this happening a LOT to people in their 30s and 40s. I was one of them!  That tug towards knowing you’re capable of more, but no idea what that is or where the heck to start!   It’s confusing because you followed the plan.   You’re doing what you’ve always done, you don’t want to start ‘from scratch’ again.    I hear you.   Then there’s the other camp who essentially tend to be the same people but one step further along.     You already started the business!  But still, something’s not quite right.    It’s not what you thought it would be, or it’s harder than you thought.   You’re doing what you THOUGHT you wanted to do but you’re feeling just as unfulfilled.   You realise you based your business around what you thought you SHOULD do, rather than what you really wanted.   You realise it’s not exactly what it’s cracked up to be.   So what do you do?!   I mean you could throw caution to the wind, quit your job or burn your business down (metaphorically speaking) OR you could carry on, reframe what you’re doing right now, work out what’s in your unconscious that’s REALLY causing the feelings and THEN make decisions based on that.   So how do you start doing that?   Where did the path you’re on actually come from?  Did it ever come from you?  Or was it someone else?   What did you LOVE doing as a kid?   Where do you lose time?  Where are you really in a state of flow?   What do you really want for your life?  What are your priorities?  How can you make what you do fit around that?   What are your non negotiables?   What hobbies have you got?     Take some courses and test the water.  Use your job as your venture capitalist and start DOING things you’re intrigued by.   Do you want to re-qualify?  How can you make that happen?     What does your intuition tell you?  There will be this weird emotional pull to certain things, you may not be used to hearing it, or listening for it.  But give it a try.  What comes up a lot for you.  Do you dismiss it because it seems wild and crazy?  Do you dismiss it because you think you can’t have it or there’s no point?   What would happen if you just followed it?    What would you do if you know you couldn’t fail?   What would you do if you had a billion pounds in the bank?   What do you NOT want to do?   When I was in that position I did a few things, I'll let you in on them as you’re in my inner circle ;-) Then you can decide if it might work for you.  Let me tell you there is some serious trial and error and willingness to fail thrown in here!   I wrote down all the things I love doing.  As we’re getting to know each other more I'll tell you some of the thighs I wrote down.   I started this as a list and then fleshed out the finer details of my strengths and weaknesses for all of them ha! So left brained sometimes.   So, I wrote down a mixture of things I COULD do or SHOULD do and things I LOVED to do.   I wrote down marketing consultant - I’ve spent 15 years in media so I definitely COULD have done this but my heart went...Meh!   I wrote down antiquing...oh yes...i’m coming out of the charity shop and antique fair closet.  I freaking LOVE me a bargain and when I find something I KNOW is special it fills my heart with joy so I thought about reselling on things like Ebay (back then there was no Facey B marketplace or any of these newfangled ones we have today.)   I wrote down jewellery designer, if you’ve been following me for a while you’ll know I went down this route and created my brand Francesca Grace….and quit it when it got too hard.  If I knew then what I know now ha!   I wrote down coach or therapist.  Helping people has always been a thing i’ve done, helping people think differently and to be honest it’s always been one of those ‘pulls’ I ignored. Even when we were doing careers quizzes as a teenager that’s what they were telling me ha.  IGNORED and got distracted by jewellery!   I wrote down dog walker.  Not many things bring me more joy than spending time with woofs! I had a grand master plan to combine products with dog walking. Then I got diagnosed with Arthritis and it was off the table.   My husband says I have a unique way of turning ANYTHING into a money making idea...even when people aren’t asking for it ha!   I had ideas coming out of my eyeballs.     I also had the limiting beliefs, stories and excuses to go with them.  So bear in mind when you do this you’re going to start naturally unearthing them along the way.   I was awful to myself around all the reasons I wasn’t good enough or couldn’t do it.  So I went with trial and error for a while.   So things to look out for when working out what you REALLY want.   Shoulds!!!   Coulds!!!   Can’ts!!!   Need tos!!!   Have tos!!!   I don’t know hows!!!   You want to look for the want tos! For the things that light you up and feel GOOD! That gets you fired up and excited and even if they seem out of reach right now, how COULD you make them happen?     What steps would someone need to take to get there (it’s handy to take the YOU out of the equation for this one so you don’t let your beliefs get in the way!)   You really can make a living doing pretty much ANYTHING these days so look for the evidence that it’s possible.  The only limits are your imagination really.    So write down everything no matter how bonkers you think it sounds and start doing your research.    So whether you’re in the career and know it’s not right anymore and want to start your own thing, or you’ve built a business and realised it’s not for you...the same questions apply.   Really dig into what you love, what brings you joy.  The important emotions!    The bottom line is, when you live your life based on other people’s ideas of what success looks like, or what the right path to follow is then you’ll suppress parts of yourself that don’t fit in with that. You’ve got to find what floats YOUR boat and what YOU think is right.   I’m not a ‘throw caution to the wind and burn stuff down’ kind of a gal.  That can affect your relationships negatively if you’re not all on the same page, it often will catapult you into scarcity (which is the WORST place to start a business from!) once the initial excitement wears off. It leaves no room for experimenting.  It leaves little room for curiosity.  It leaves little room to make mistakes, to get things wrong, to fail and get back up.   People think those are the negatives but they’re the path to where you want to be...sounds counterintuitive but you HAVE to be allowed to get things wrong or you deny yourself the lessons and the growth.    It’s so, so, SO important to do something you actually love doing.  Because it’s hard.  There are ups and downs.  You need to have fire in your belly and the motivation behind you to keep going through the downs.   Fx

To work his two best horses, barrow, cart or plow Or any kind of good farmwork he knew well that I could do.   He had a lovely daughter, and her name was Isabel, She was the lily of the valley and the primrose of the dell. And when she'd go out walking she'd take me for her guide; Down by the banks of Cairnie we watched those small fish glide.   And when three short months had gone and passed, this lassie lost her bloom. And the red fell from her rosy cheeks, and her eyes began to swoon. And when nine long months had gone and passed, she bore to me a son, And swiftly I was sent for to see what could be done.   I said that I would marry her, but och, that would not dee, Saying, “You're no match for Isabelle, and she's no match for thee.” So I took my own son all in my arms, may he bring to me much joy, And may he mean as much to me as the girl that I adore.   And now she's married to a tinker lad and he comes from Huntly town, Mending pots and pans and paraffin lamps and he scours the country 'round. Maybe she's got have a better match, old Bogie can't tell, Fare ye well, you lads o' Huntly side and Bogie's Bonnie Belle."   So Ben Mi Ch'a Bon Tempo performed by Consort of SomeSorte from the album was just a lad, me mum said ""Darlin' Paddy So's you won't be sad someday you'll want to marry It's time we had this chat on how to find a wife for you Old, young, skinny, or fat, the best to make a life for you   Just seek a girl with charms, like Venus but with arms To keep your bed all warm and happily married will you be It's how I caught your dad, me beauty drove him mad And now you see he's had these many years of marital bliss and harmony.""   Raise your glasses high and toast to love and marriage We'll never understand 'til they slide our coffins from the carriage Whack-fe-lol-da-rah   But then I turned fourteen, me pa said, ""Darlin' Paddy I'll teach you the routine to find the girl to marry You'll have the benefit of all me experience In a relationship of lasting joy and permanence   Just marry an ugly girl, the oyster not the pearl The ugliest in the world, 'cause a bonny lass could leave ya I'm telling you now, me son, it's the reason I married your mum So do as I have done, if an ugly girl, she leaves you You'll find you don't really mind.""   Raise your glasses high and toast to love and marriage We'll never understand 'til they slide our coffins from the carriage Whack-fe-lol-da-rah   So's I've grown up a bit confused, love was such a bother Courted pretty girls, and some that looked like me mother So Mom and dear old Dad, the words to me you've spoken I feel that I've been had, me heart is always broken   When I thought Id found true love, and I'm thanking God above Push it came to shove and I'm back out on me bum again I'm telling you lads it's true, no longer will I woo Me heart is black and blue, I'll leave this game of love to you I'm going off to become a priest!   Raise your glasses high and toast to love and marriage We'll never understand 'til they slide our coffins from the carriage Raise your glasses high and toast to love and marriage We'll never understand 'til they slide our coffins from the carriage Whack-fe-lol-da-rah"   Tartan Is The Color Of My True Love's Hair performed by Barleyjuice from the album Six Yanks www.barleyjuice.com "Tartan is the Colour Of My True Love's Hair (Mark Mulholland / IMRO; Kyf Brewer / Brewerds&Music / ASCAP)   Well when I was just a young lad, my life about to start There was ever only one girl had a place inside my heart We walked the glen, we climbed the Ben, the forest was our bed, And many a morn I'd wake to find me kilt across her head   And I been up and I been down and I been here and I been there Never saw a bonny lassie quite as comely or as fair You can talk of pretty maidens and I don't bloody care Cause tartan is the colour of my true love's hair   We walked the bonnie highlands, no matter what the weather And we'd shag each other senseless in the bonnie purple heather ŒTil one day we were frolicking and as my true love laughed, She fell into the workings of an old disused mineshaft   And I been up and I been down and I been here and I been there Never saw a bonny lassie quite as comely or as fair You can talk of pretty maidens and I don't bloody care Cause tartan is the colour of my true love's hair   Well I never have recovered from that sad, sad, sorry day So I left my native land for the shores of Amerikay And many a man has made remark about me ancient dress But I wear it in remembrance of the girl it e'er first kissed   And I been up and I been down and I been here and I been there Never saw a bonny lassie quite as comely or as fair You can talk of pretty maidens and I don't bloody care Cause tartan is the colour of my true love's hair"   Mary Mack performed by Queen Ann's Lace from the album Unlaced www.QALace.com "Mary Mack   There's a little girl and her name is Mary Mack Make no mistake, she's the girl I'm gonna track There's a lot of other fellas who would get up on her track But I'm thinking that they'll have to get up early   CHORUS Mary Mack's father's makin' Mary Mack marry me My father's makin' me marry Mary Mack And I'm goin' to marry Mary for my Mary to take care of me Well all be making merry when I marry Mary Mack   There a little lass and she has a lot of brass has a lot of gas and her father thinks I'm gas And I'd be a silly ass for to let the matter pass Her father thinks she suits me fairly CHORUS   Mary and her mother do an awful lot together In fact you hardly ever see the one without the other Lot of people wonder whether if its Mary or her mother Or both of them together that I'm courting CHORUS   Now the weddin's on Wednesday and everything's arranged Soon her name wil change to mine, unless her mind is changed And makin' the arrangements is makin' me deranged marriage is an awful undertaking CHORUS   It's sure to be a grand affair and grander than a fair There's gonna be a coach and pair for every pair that's there We'll dine upon the finest fare, I'm sure to get my share If I don't I'll be very much mistaken CHORUS"   Lover's Wreck performed by Cheeks and Phoenix from the album Any Requests www.cheeksandphoenix.com """Lover's_Wreck   A hundred days at sea, A retch away from misery Rummies and rats and tarry jacks my only family (break) The island of salvation Is still a scream a way As the lungs of the night Blow out the light my heart kneels Down to pray   (strait into chorus) Lord why did you take her She meant so much to me Now I’m a wretched soul on a privateer Drowning out at sea I’m killing and I’m drinking My blue heart to black But I swear oh lord I’ll never sin again If you bring her back   Gypsy was a siren, Dripping with desire Her moonless hair and skin so fair as warm as frozen fire She had the loyalty of a cat, behind those pale green eyes Through her cherry lips, the devil slipped, a thousand lies A clan of rogues and vagabonds, occupied her head That thieving band took her pale white hand and stole her from my bed And like a ghost ship in the night, She drifted out once more To land upon the sand of another lover’s shore   Lord why did you take her She meant so much to me Now I’m a wretched soul on a privateer Drowning out at sea I’m killing and I’m drinking My blue heart to black But I swear oh lord I’ll never sin again If you bring her back   In my sleeping mind she sings a sad and lonely lullaby When I wake there’s just the ache it will haunt me till I die When those winds of vanity no longer blow her west I pray they’ll guide her home (across the foam) and put my heart to rest Press gang filled this Man-o-War To make the black mouthed cannon roar Now all my trade is ball and blade, and blood forever more And the sting of salt and spray, the ocean’s howl and squall A stumbling wreck, I roam the deck, at the devil’s beck and call At the devil’s beck and call   Lord why did you take her She meant so much to me Now I’m a wretched soul on a privateer Drowning out at sea I’m killing and I’m drinking My blue heart to black But I swear oh lord I’ll never sin again If you bring her back I swear oh lord I’ll never sin again If you bring her back"""   I Still Remember performed by Blackmore's Night from the album Fires At Midnight www.blackmoresnight.com "I thought of you the other day How worlds of change led us astray Colors seem to fade to gray In the wake of yesterday You looked into my eyes You had me hypnotized and I can still remember you I had a dream of you and I A thousand stars lit up the sky I touched your hand and you were gone But memories of you live on You looked into my eyes You had me hypnotized and I can still remember you Those moments spent together Promising forever and I can still remember you Do you ever think of me And get lost in the memory When you do, I hope you smile And hold that memory a while You looked into my eyes You had me hypnotized and I can still remember you Those moments spent together Promising forever and I can still remember you Still remember you Still remember you Still remember you Still remember you Still remember you Still remember you Still remember you Still remember you Still remember you Still remember you"   Mist-Covered Mountains performed by Crimson Pirates from the album Your Day In The Barrel www.crimsonpirates.com/ "O chì, chì mi na mòr-bheanna O chì, chì mi na còrr-bheanna O chì, chì mi na coireachan Chì mi na sgoran fo cheò   Hail to the mountains with summits of blue, To the glens with their meadows of sunshine and dew. To the women and men ever constant and true, Ever ready to welcome one home.   Oh ro soon shall I see them; Oh he ro see them oh see them. Oh ro soon shall I see them the Mist covered mountains of home.   There shall I gaze on the mountains again, On the fields and the woods and the burns and the glens, Away 'mong the corries beyond human ken In the haunts of the deer I will roam   Oh ro soon shall I see them; Oh he ro see them oh see them. Oh ro soon shall I see them the Mist covered mountains of home. There shall I visit the place of my birth And they'll give me a welcome the warmest on earth All so loving and kind full of music and mirth, In the sweet sounding language of home.   O chì, chì mi na mòr-bheanna O chì, chì mi na còrr-bheanna O chì, chì mi na coireachan Chì mi na sgoran fo cheò   Oh ro soon shall I see them; Oh he ro see them oh see them. Oh ro soon shall I see them the Mist covered mountains of home.   Married to a Mermaid performed by Dregs from the album Do It Like You're Drunk www.the-dregs.net "Married_to_a_Mermaid   There was a gay young farmer, Who liv'd on Salisbury plain; He lov'd a rich Knight's daughter dear! And she lov'd him again. The Knight he was distressed, That they should sweethearts be. So he had the farmer soon pressed, And sent him off to sea. Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves... 'Twas on the deep Atlantic, Midst Equinoctial gales; This young farmer fell overboard Among the sharks and whales; He disappeared so quickly, So headlong down went he, That he went out of sight Like a streak of light To the bottom of the deep blue sea. Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves... We lowered a boat to find him, We thought to see his corse, When up to the top he came with a bang, And sang in a voice so hoarse, 'My comrades and my messmates, Oh, do not weep for me, For I'm married to a mermaid, Atthe bottom of the deep blue sea.' Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves... He said that as he went down, Great fishes he did see; They seemed to think as he did wink, That he was rather free. But down he went so quickly, Saying, ""Tis all up with me, ' When he met a lovely mermaid Atthe bottom of the deep blue sea. Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves... She came at once unto him, And gave him her white hand, Saying, 'I have waited long, my dear, To welcome you to land. Go to your ship and tell them, You'll leave them all for me; For you're married to a mermaid At the bottom of the deep blue sea.' Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves... The wind was fair, the sails set, The ship was running free; When we all went to the captain bold, And told what we did see. He went unto the ship's side, And loudly bellowed he, 'Be happy as you can, my man, At the bottom of the deep blue sea.' Singing Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves Britons never, never, never shall be slaves..."

Nothing out of the ordinary UNTIL I decided it was time for an adventure after I got my food! Sure. I COULD go straight home but I decided to give myself a quest instead. Did you know that you don’t have to wait for a quest to be bestowed upon you? You can decide at any moment what is suddenly more important than ANYTHING else. And that you won’t rest until that thing is done. It can be noble, sure, but most of my quests are completely random which is why they are the BEST."Today's Self-Care Prompts:What will be your quest for the day?Let’s be pen pals at hello@dionneandselfcare.comGet this month's collection of favorite self-care tips at www.dionneandselfcare.comP.S. Last week I travelled to Europe... then everything changed. Here's what happened, what we did and how we decided. AND bonus content, my wife (Janine) joins me and we talk through how we are managing our family at this time, the balance of wisdom and faith and the steps we are taking for the short-term foreseeable future. #crazytimesI was booked in to be keynote speaker at the first Heaven in Business Ukraine conference. They were expecting 250 people on the first day and double that at the public meetings the following day. On the way, I had planned a stopover in Germany staying with business friends and speaking with a local faith-based business group in Stuttgart. But after departing USA and arriving in Germany we received word that Ukraine government was cancelling all public meetings. BOOM. What would we do now? How would we even decide?1. What are my options?First step is to consider what I COULD do (bearing in mind, I have two international students at Bethel's Ministry School traveling with me).A. Travel to Ukraine anyway and meet individually and/or with small team of leaders. Keep existing itinerary?B. Travel to Netherlands and stay with business friends who were going to meet me in Ukraine. This couple are also instructors at our Heaven in Business Bootcamps?C. Stay in Germany and serve the local business community?D. Cancel all travel and return home immediately.2. Who are the stakeholders? In this situation the people concerned are primarily my wife/family, the team with me, and my German hosts. The Ukraine host had already communicated we will reschedule when the situation changes. Will the borders close? Will we be quarantined somewhere? Did we 'miss-it' even traveling this far? So many unknowns yet after meeting and praying with our German hosts and seeing what God immediately did, we definitely sensed we had made the right decision to come this far. 3. What does God say?I spoke with my team and our German hosts and we stood around the kitchen and prayed. All of us had the sense to stay in Germany to do the planned meeting there the following night and then talk to the local pastor if there was any way we could serve him over the weekend.4. Make the decision keeping ears open...My wife was in full support of us making the best decision in staying in Germany. At this point we were thinking until Monday (it was still Wednesday, and the business meeting was Thursday evening). As I talked further with my wife we sensed it would NOT be good to stay over weekend and serve local church on the Sunday - they needed to hear from their own team and not a visitor/stranger at this time. So we made the decision to change our flights to return home to USA Friday evening. We let the pastor know and offered to minister to him and his team if the timing would work for them.At the time the Friday flights were 90% empty. Our airline tried to charge an $1800 change fee but on asking to speak with the manager and having an amicable conversation, they dropped the fee and confirmed the flights. We would arrive back in USA at 9pm on Friday 13th.What happened? We woke Thursday morning to news that USA was closing the border to foreigners at midnight Friday 13th. Our decision just 12 hours earlier meant we would arrive just 3 hours before the policy change! Not only that, the plane was now filling up FAST and the price to rebook or change seats suddenly doubled.Phew! Thank God for wise decisions! The Thursday evening meeting was excellent. The topic was last weeks podcast: 7 Keys to Find Hope in Crazy Times. We arrived back in USA after reading the Center for Disease Control guidelines and expecting to be given information or told that we need to self-isolate. But... nothing. It was the OPPOSITE of what we expected - no information, no handout, close proximity lines as per normal airport navigation. I was confused. If this is so serious, why is the gateway wide-open and ZERO management in place???So what did we do next - AT HOME?I was shocked at the contrast between Government and CDC statements and what I experienced at the airport. What should I do at home? Do I follow CDC self-isolation guidelines or interact with others as normal? Was I REALLY any threat to my community? Here's my process:I am part of a large organization in my city and I have a daughter with a heart condition… so I will be self isolating in my own house for the next two weeks. I am not happy. This is not fun. This seems absolutely crazy. But this is not about me. It’s not my personal risk. It’s about slowing down the spread of the virus as best as possible to protect those vulnerable and to allow the medical profession to get a handle on how to control it. It is very highly likely that I am perfectly healthy. But that 0.01% chance of introducing the virus to my daughter…who works in the food industry... or to the husband of my employee… or to the grandmother of my neighbor… is not worth the risk. In other words, my discomfort and isolation for two weeks is a lower cost than the cost of my daughter or community member being affected through me.So here we go. Two weeks from my bedroom (and forays into the recreation area behind my house...).Stay healthy, stay hope filled, stay wise. Finally here's your daily prescription:READ and PRAY Psalm 91.SHARE communion with family - Jesus blood paid for this in full!CALL a friend or colleague and encourage them in midst of this. You are not alone. Brought to you by Gulf Coast Recreation, your playground expert.

Greetings Gunn Runner And farewell February. Things might've run a little behind. But I made big progress this month. Especially with the release of my Kickstarter for Selcouth. I conquered my $5000 goal just a few days after it launched. It still has two weeks to go. So I'm feeling pretty good about it so far. But before we talk more about that, let's talk about... Show #259 0:40 - PODCASTS The Pub Songs Podcast is back with a vengeance. I am a podcaster at heart. I figured it'd be fairly easy to knock out completely live episodes of the Pub Songs Podcast to my Kickstarter every week. And I was correct. I recorded four new episodes so far. Which is good because in addition to promoting the podcast, it also allows me to keep to my initial schedule of how many episodes I want to release this year. Plus, I love the format. I'm fine tuning it still. But it starts with a song. I go into some news, add a stories from the road, and a couple more songs. It feels good. Like something I COULD keep up every week. Though I don't plan to at present. Stories from the Road is not getting ahead. But I have a lot of new content. So I'm staying on top of it. That's good because this is my Patron-only podcast. I got ahead for the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. But I already feel like I'm losing that lead I got. I want to try and knock out a bunch of summer episodes. But I'm stalling for St Patrick's Day. Sooooo we shall see.   The In the ‘Verse podcast is coming. I apologize for the delay. But it's been crazy. Course, that doesn't mean I didn't go ahead and setup the Cat Music Lovers podcast. The first podcast I ever published was the Cat Lovers Podcast. I created it to promote my Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers. But I ran out of time and had less interest in keeping it going. But I was still proud of that show. I was happy it was still available. Until I realized it was No Longer available. So I did a bunch of maintenance on the show. It should be back up on Apple Podcasts soon. 2:54 - VIDEOS My voice is back. Which means Coffee with the Celtfather is back as well.  I feel like I've had some good shows. Though the attendance still seems a little lower than I'd like. Maybe I need to promote the show more. That said, I am posting new videos on YouTube. And I'm working on a new strategy for the site. My views have dropped dramatically since I deleted all of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast videos. Now each video I post gets about 50 views. That's not too good. But it allows me to start over and decide what this channel will be. So what will it be? Family videos set to my music. I like doing videos of my family. It's extra cool when I can add in my own music to spice up the video. I haven't figured out how to name the videos yet. But these videos help me learn a lot about shooting and editing videos. I have a new one featuring Inara. We went for a hike the other day. It was't too bad a video. My editing still needs work though Travel videos. I recorded a lot of video these past couple o'years going on my Celtic Invasion Vacations. These are a great way to promote my trips. So I'm gonna keep editing these videos. The sucky thing is that as I edit them, I realize I should've done this or that... Like in the latest video from The Fairy Pools on the Isle of Skye. I did a poor job filming. But there was enough footage that it's not too bad. Song Performance videos. I thought I had recorded a lot of these videos. After reviewing my site, I realize I haven't. So I'm gonna keep recording me singing individual songs. This is a great way to attract new followers of my site. So hopefully, you'll see more. Celtic Geek Thoughts. I'm not yet sure how to do these videos or what content to put on them, aside from the Celtic Top 40 videos I wanna do. But I'll have to tell you when I figure that out. 10:26 - MERCH My free CD offer went over GREAT last month. If you ever want to find out how many of your fans listen to physical CDs. Give one away. LOL. I had over a hundred that went out into the world. And of course, all you have to do is pay the shipping cost. You'll find a link in the shownotes if you want one. Again the Kickstarter for Selcouth is going great. I'm $700 over my initial goal. Yes. My actual goal is to earn $7500. But at least my base expenses are covered. I CAN create a new CD. And I still have two weeks to go to hit my first stretch goal. I ran into one interesting problem as the goal has started to stall out. That is, how do I keep up momentum. Seems like every time I post something fun or interesting, I get a spike. But I'm not the best storyteller I think. So that's making it tough. I discussed this challenge with Andrew. He suggested that I bring people in on video to chat about it. I'm gonna try and do that the next couple o'weeks. Stay tuned... 12:06 - TRAVEL The Celtic Invasion of Venice closed up. We have a very small group this year. And I can start planning for Scotland in 2021. But I'm excited to see what happens next... 12:56 - WEBSITES With St Patrick's Day just around the corner, I started updating my Irish Song Lyrics website. I started this site years ago to promote my Celtic songs. Admittedly, I've done little with it the past few years, Except around St Patrick's Day. But I decided to update it for two reasons. One, it's that time of year. And two because I want to get back to helping people learn these songs. You see, the reason I started the site was to offer an incredible resource. How to play songs the way I learn them, by ear. There are just lyrics, chords, and music to listen to on the site. You can play along with me over and over again if you so desire. This makes it a lot easier. I'm also trying to make it entirely about the user. I removed much of the advertising that was on the website. Now it's just the stuff you really want. It's an amazing, free resource. So go along with me. 14:15 - PROMOTION I also had a new promotion idea I thought up recently using Facebook groups... Well, actually any online community. I have two groups that I actively share to on Facebook: Celtic Geeks and Irish & Celtic Music Club. Most everything really goes to the Celtic Geeks group. If I find something I love, unless it's hardcore Celtic, I share it to the Celtic Geeks group. That makes it easy. I don't use my personal profile. I share to an interactive community. It's awesome. And that's the tip I came up with. Instead of trying to share my music to your friends who may or may not share you interests, share to a group, where your interests definitely align. I haven't seen many Gunn Runners doing that yet, well aside from Sarah, who sort of inspired this idea when she shared Selcouth to a Firefly fan group. 16:04 - SHOWS PLANNED FOR MARCH I updated the gig calendar on my website. I'm using Google Calendars again. This is going GREAT for listing shows. You can see everywhere I'll be this year. And yes, it is fully up-to-date. Working with Anxiety: Simplify Your Sales

So I wanted to switch things up a bit today and talk to you guys about something that I keep seeing pop up over and over again. It’s a topic that I witness inside the free Simplify your Sales FB group, and also inside my paid Mastermind Your Marketing group as well.    Anxiety.    It’s a very real thing and it absolutely has an effect on your ability to work on your shop + business.    If you’ve never struggle with anxiety, you don’t know just how crippling it can be and this episode might not even make sense to you. That’s okay-- no hard feelings.    However, if you struggle with anxiety, I want you to know that I’m here for you and I HEAR you. I want you to know that you’re not in this alone and that it’s something I’ve struggled with as well and it’s only in the past few months that I’ve really managed to contain it in regards to getting things done in my business. Not 100%, but it’s not my everyday normal anymore.    Now, that definitely didn’t happen overnight, it was a deliberate effort on my part.    Understanding that anxiety can be a fuel and not just an excuse. I’ve been blessed-- which I know is a weird and crazy thing to say-- with anxiety and the reason I say it can be a blessing is that even with it’s challenges, it allows me to never fully feel satisfied with what I have. Not in an ungrateful way, but in a way that I COULD do more and I COULD build something bigger. It motivates me to not get complacent in my business and has helped me accomplish AMAZING things. So yes, it’s a HARD thing— a DANG HARD THING— but there are hidden “blessings” that come from having it and using it to fuel your business.    So today I wanted to talk to you about some things that can help with managing your anxiety as an entrepreneur. Because while anxiety can be a great motivator, it can also be paralyzing if it gets out of control. And when it’s to that point, NOTHING feels possible. I’m going to share a bit about my personal experience as well— which feels VERY vulnerable— but I want you to see where I’m coming from and my experience with it and hopefully find some strength from MY story as you relate it to your own.    And just as a disclaimer, I’m NOT a professional-- these are just things to help you get a glimpse at what I do that has worked for me.  Where my anxiety came from Okay, so like I said, before we dive into some of my tips on managing anxiety, I wanted to share a little bit of personal detail about MY story and what triggered anxiety to start for me. I know some people have dealt with it their entire lives and I am amazed by you.   So just to set the record straight, I haven’t always struggled with anxiety-- I’m definitely blessed in that way. I always go back to when my first daughter was born in 2013 as kind of this “catalyst” for when I started my Etsy shop-- which is true-- but it’s also the period when I experienced anxiety for the first time in the form of a panic attack. 2013 was a BIG year for me in many, many ways.    I--literally-- thought I was dying the first time I felt major anxiety. I felt like my heart was going to beat out of my chest in a frantic fury and that the oxygen was running out of the room. I remember curling up in a ball underneath a desk at my in-laws house one day a few weeks after my daughter had been born and rocking back and forth madly because I was convinced that I was going to crawl out of my own skin at any moment and I was trying to hold it all together-- quite literally.    Now not every moment of every day was panic-attack worthy, but it very quickly became my “new normal” that I would wake up in the morning with a dreaded pit in my stomach that would physically ACHE because I was so anxious about how I was going to get through the day. The idea of waking up with the baby at 6:30 am in the morning and knowing I had to go 12+ hours throughout the day with her in tow BY MYSELF [we had just moved to a new townhouse] and not knowing what the day would hold: would she nap? Eat well? Scream all afternoon? I literally had no idea basically convinced me that this was my new “normal” and that pit wasn’t going to go away.    Now, Juliet did eventually become a bit more predictable and stopped crying every minute of everyday— I mean, it took 6 months— but it happened. But funny thing: the anxious pit in my stomach didn’t go away.    Even if the day very rarely turned out EXACTLY how I had planned it in my head and on my to-do list, I was still a twisted mess of anxiousness throughout it all.   So with that post-partum anxiety, I also got post partum depression which was it’s own problem. That took about 18 months to go away-- at the time we didn’t have the medical insurance to get me help, and combined with a variety of other less-than-ideal factors and just general cluelessness that PPD was a real thing that needed to be treated, it lasted far longer than it should have.    If you are listening to this podcast and even THINK you might be struggling with post partum depression, please get professional help! Life does NOT have to feel this way permanently— and the sooner you get help, the sooner you’ll start to feel better. I know right now it doesn’t feel like you will. I’ve been there. I didn’t believe I could ever get better. But you can. AND YOU WILL.    Coming back to my journey with anxiety….At around 18 months post partum, I remember smiling-- truly smiling-- for the first time in a year and a half. We had just decided to plan our first family trip to Disneyland and I actually felt some degree of happy about it which was absolutely FOREIGN to me at the time.    My days got less and less dark as I was pulled out of the PPD. And someday I’ll talk more about how that happened.    But the anxiety? It stayed. And it’s still something I struggle with on a regular basis.    But it’s not my everyday normal. Before it would throw me into a full blown panic attack by breakfast, but nowadays it’s much more manageable and even after having my second child back in November 2018, it didn’t spiral out of control again-- for which I feel incredibly blessed.    A large part of that is because of skills I’ve learned that have helped me cope with it. Note that I’m not saying “thrived with it” because I still wouldn’t wish this upon myself or anyone I know, but these things have made it manageable as a mom, a successful business owner, and a human being in general.    I still struggle with anxiety. Point blank. It’s something that pops up a few times a day, but it’s not debilitating anymore.    However. It definitely HAS affected my work and ability to get things done in my businesses-- which I think if you’re still listening to this episode-- is something that you may be able to relate to and maybe even currently struggling with.    And that’s what I want to talk to you about today.    I want to share what I’VE found to help me as I work through it and get things done with my business. I’m not touting some “cure-all” or a way to manage anxiety in EVERY aspect of your life, but in regards to running an online business, I’m always looking for people who have gone through similar things to me and how they’ve dealt with it, so I hope you can use this episode in the same way.    Now, if you’ve been around for a while, you know that I started my Etsy shop, LittleHighbury, with a newborn in tow. Don’t ask me HOW— I still am unsure. But I needed an escape from motherhood, and running an online shop somehow happened and it became a much-needed distraction.    Now, less you think I hit the ground running, it’s important to understand that I wasn’t able to work on it all the time— in fact, I enlisted my mom and husband to do a lot of work for me— because my post partum depression would ebb and flow. Some days were easier than others. Most days were REALLY hard. In order to make it work, when I felt good, I worked on the business— answering convos, designing fabrics, etc.   When I was REALLY struggling, I gave myself a bit of grace and asked for help to fill orders.  It wasn’t ideal by any means, but it’s how I got things done. My husband is truly a rockstar and kept the business afloat more than once.    Things got A LOT easier when the PPD disappeared, but like I mentioned earlier, the anxiety stayed. And I still found it challenging on some days to actually get the work done— just the IDEA of working on my business caused my anxiety to spike.   But as LittleHighbury grew, it quickly became apparent that I would need to figure out something or some coping mechanism that allowed me to still get orders filled and completed— even if I was having an “off” day. The consistency in sales was incredible, but it also meant that I couldn’t just “disappear” for days at a time because things HAD to get done.    It’s the same thing with morgannield.com. I still get those massively anxious days, usually on days when I need to go live for a coaching call or a webinar. And the 3 tips I’m going to share with you are HOW I’m able to still get things done in the business even when all I feel like doing is curling up in a ball under the covers.    So again, the tips I’m sharing today are related to your Etsy shop business and how to cope with anxiety and still get things done. I realize this is just a TINY sliver of the anxiety you may be struggling with in your overall life, but I DO know that a lot of Etsy shop owners struggle with major anxiety whenever they think about working on their business, so that’s what I wanted to talk about today :)   Okay, let’s dive into some of the tips I’ve found that help me.    Okay— Tip #1 - Work through it - just get ONE thing done If you get anxiety about your never-ending to-do list, it can feel near IMPOSSIBLE to even look at your to-do list, let alone actually accomplish something off of it.    Trust me when I say I’m talking from SO much experience here.    When you’re stuck in the depths of anxiety, the idea of running a business can seem laughable at that point. Like, how are you supposed to accomplish ANYTHING when you feel this way?   And I get that-- I really do.    And again-- I’m no doctor or therapist, so take this for what it’s worth-- but I’ve found that a lot of times if I’m feeling anxious about my business in particular, it’s because I’m not actually making any progress in it.    Now, I don’t just mean that in terms of sales. I mean that I’m not ACTIVELY doing anything to grow my business. I know that there are things I SHOULD be doing to grow my business, but I’m afraid to start tackling some new task because it seems incredibly daunting or it’s not something I’ve ever done before or maybe I’m just feeling unmotivated.    That particular branch of anxiety is stemming from FEAR. And I’ve found that most business anxiety comes from that-- you’re worried about taking the leap or making the wrong “step” and that’s causing you to not make ANY progress (which, in turn, feeds your anxiety)    And sometimes just the ANTICIPATION of knowing it needs to get done is all it takes to send me into a wave of anxiety that is crippling as I spiral into the “I’m a failure, this is impossible, etc.” depths.    And guess what? When I feel like that, I don’t ever make that progress or get that thing done.    And so the process repeats itself again and again. Vicious cycle.    So my advice to you is this (and I know it’s harder than it sounds). Just do ONE THING.    Pick ONE thing to do today to grow your business.    It doesn’t have to be the hardest thing on your list or the most tedious. It just needs to be ONE thing.    And a lot of the time, I’ve found that if I can do that one thing and just get started, my anxiety becomes more manageable. I’m not saying it completely disappears, but I recognize my own strength that I CAN work through it.    And usually I want to keep going after that ONE thing.    As I was creating this podcast episode, this was actually INCREDIBLE prevelant. I have been putting writing this episode off because I was worried about what people would think-- since it’s not strictly “Etsy marketing advice.” And it felt daunting to lay it out on the line and talk so candidly about my struggles.    But as I was writing this episode, it felt AMAZING. I had to push myself MAJORLY to start, but once I did, the words came effortlessly.   Now this is obviously not going to work 100% of the time and your personal situation may be completely different. But getting started and just DOING SOMETHING and taking action instead of treading close to a panic attack about all the things that need to get done with my business has been an incredible help for my anxiety.    And after I finish that one thing-- if I’m still struggling, I can check out. I don’t have to log in 5 more hours. If I need some self care (like a nap), that’s totally okay. Assuming someone is watching the baby, of course!   But this way I KNOW I’ve done at least something to grow my business today-- and it makes the anxiety easier to cope with for tomorrow because I don’t have that added guilt of feeling like a failure + that my anxiety is in control and not me.    So on the days where you need to get things done but you don’t feel like you can do any of it, just pick ONE thing and do it. And then reassess— see how you feel— and make a decision after that.    Tip #2 - Figure out systems that can allow you to take a break if you need it.    Now, this doesn’t “solve” anxiety by any means. But it does take the pressure off, which is definitely something that anxiety feeds off of.    One of the most common problems I hear is that people are afraid that if they take a break from the business-- or stop working for a hot second-- that all their success--even if it’s just a little-- will disappear overnight.    I have two things to say to that: 1- Make sure you’re not relying solely on SEO for your sales. This is where a lot of that anxiety can stem from since you have 0 control of the Etsy algorithm and whatever tests and changes they decide to make on a whim. Now, I’m not saying you shouldn’t worry about SEO at all-- you absolutely should have that set up so you have a strong foundation and can take advantage of the benefits of the built in traffic that Etsy naturally has.    And if you’re struggling to get that started or have been “working” on it for over 6 months and still aren’t done, I’d HIGHLY encourage you to check out my SEO One + Done course that will whip your SEO into shape for Etsy, Google, and Pinterest in just 14 days. So you can move on and cross SEO off your never-ending to-do list for good. Hallelujah!    Okay, and then thing #2 - Figure out how you can work “ahead” to take the pressure off when you really need it.   You’re not always going to be able to plow through things and get them done when you’re feeling particularly crippled by anxiety-- I know I’ve seen it in my own life-- and it’s AMAZING to have a sort of “buffer” to back you up when YOU need to step away from your business.    When you have those “good” days that you aren’t feeling the drag of anxiety, I want you to take advantage of them and work ahead in your business.    This may look like:   Create ready-to-ship orders Have canned responses ready for Etsy conversations Batch your social media + pre-schedule it in advance (+ keep a reservoir of content on hand for those “days”)  Set up an automated email sequence to sell your product for you (we talk about this inside MYM) Hiring a VA to do some of the “lifting” for you. You may not be to this point now-- and that’s okay! But this is a GAME CHANGER! Basically anything you can do to work ahead and not have to be in the moment all day everyday? DO IT.    Bottom line? You are allowed to take breaks, especially on those days that you are struggling.    Set up the systems and things in place so that you can feel okay when you DO take those breaks.    And going right along with that...   Tip #3 - Give yourself grace This is probably THE most important piece of advice I can give to you today and is CRITICAL for working when you have anxiety.    You’ve got to give yourself grace.    This is a lesson I learned the VERY hard way back in February 2018.    At that time I was running LittleHighbury, making consistent five-figure months, and I was also running morgannield.com-- the site I run today.    I had a hyper-active and very needy 4 year old at home, and I was lucky enough to have a surprise pregnancy that left me with a term only a few people know about-- hyperemesis gravidarum.    This is the Princess Kate sickness— the one she got with all 3 of her children. The one where you puke all day everyday for 9 months of your life while you’re carrying a child. You get to know the local hospital staff REALLY well, you get IV’s brought to you on a regular basis, and you become SUPER familiar with the toilet bowls in your house. You also realize that you don’t clean them nearly enough, but at that point, the smell of the cleaner makes you puke more so you let it slide.    So I was throwing up about 20+ times/day, taking care of my 4 year old who was only in preschool about 8 hours/week, and running two businesses.    Now, I wrote a very emotional blog post all about this that I’ll link to in the show notes which you can find over at morgannield.com/blog/episode4, but basically in February 2018 I had a mental breakdown-- I couldn’t stop sobbing (or puking) and my anxiety about everything was THROUGH THE ROOF. I literally thought I was going to die at any minute. I was trying to launch my Mastermind Your Marketing program for the 3rd time and also fill 20+ orders/day with LittleHighbury.   In between puke sessions.    Any NORMAL person would say that I was crazy-- and I totally was-- but at the time I was convinced that I had to keep doing both businesses or I would be a failure.   Now, I know most of you listening are Etsy shop owners and have never “launched” a digital course, but I’m here to say: IT’S A LOT OF WORK. What looks effortless on the outside is literally just that tip of the iceberg to a whole lotta crazy going on beneath the surface.    My husband found me in the bathroom after an especially grueling puke session and basically told me I had to stop. You know, in between the heaving and sobbing that I couldn’t control.    I couldn’t do both businesses AND be pregnant AND care for our 4 year old daughter anymore.   I couldn’t see it, but of course he was right.    So I (he, WE) made the decision to close up LittleHighbury right then and there.    And I had to GIVE MYSELF GRACE that at that exact moment in time, I couldn’t do it all.    And that was okay.    The world didn’t implode, our bank account didn’t dry up, the zombie apocalypse never happened-- (although if that does ever happen, I’m *pretty* sure I want to be one of the first to go. Kind of a “peace out, cub scout” sort of thing. And for the love of all that is holy, will someone PLEASE explain to me why you would ever want to survive a world where you’re constantly in fear of your life with zombies chasing you. I genuinely don’t understand that!)    Okay, so like I was saying before I popped onto my zombie soapbox-- none of those things happened.    But I was able to focus LESS on being busy and more on taking care of myself.    Not completing 20+ orders/day freed up A LOT of time that I was able to nap, watch movies, and recharge after an awful day when I felt like crap.    Now, those aren’t the most productive, amazing things ever.    But they were the grace I needed to get through that point in time.    And they ended up leading me to having my BIGGEST launch EVER because I was able to focus more on that instead of trying to split my time between managing two businesses.    So give yourself grace.    If you’ve got 4 kids under 4 and the little one kept you up all night teething, it’s okay that you didn’t add the 10 new products-- or even 1 new product-- to your shop that you “promised” yourself you would do today.    If you’ve had a family emergency and been putting out fires all day for everyone, it’s okay that you didn’t photograph your entire new product line today.    If you feel such a pit in your stomach for no reason at all that you can’t even get out of a bed, much less run a business, that’s okay.    You’ve GOT to take care of #1 first and foremost. And that #1 is YOU.    Your business isn’t going anywhere and it’s not going to go belly-up because you took a nap this afternoon that you really needed instead of answering 5 million Etsy convos.    Give yourself grace and give yourself permission to step away, take care of YOU and what YOU need, and then come back to the business.    I promise it’ll still  be waiting for you :)   ********* Conclusion   Holy cow. Okay, so I thought I’d maybe have a couple things to say about anxiety + running my business but apparently I had a TON to share. In a way, this episode has been therapeutic to me, and I hope you found some value in it. If nothing else, know that you are NOT alone. I still absolutely have days where I don’t want to show up or be running a business because my anxiety is sky high and I literally don’t feel like I can check my email without spiraling into major overwhelm and panic. Mondays, in general, are HARD for me.    It happens. It’s part of being a human who struggles with anxiety. And if that’s you as well, I’m here for you. You absolutely CAN run a business while struggling through anxiety. It’s not something I ever thought I would have to deal with, but I do and it’s here and to some extent? It’s a blessing as weird as that sounds. It means I need to be more thoughtful and deliberate about the things I DO work on and how I plan + run my business. Because some days I just can’t show up.    You are NOT your anxiety. It’s a part of you that you have to learn how to work with, but it isn’t “YOU” -- you are more than your anxiety and you’ve got this.    Alright guys, be sure to check the show notes for any resources I mentioned in the podcast + I’ll see you next week!

You can’t just positive-think your way into confidence: real confidence comes as a result of consistently taking action, and seeing growth in yourself over time. When I started my podcast 4 years ago, I wasn’t confident about it. At all. In fact, I was very self-conscious about my voice, my accent, my ideas, my theme song, my introduction. You name it, I doubted it. And that’s how it should be — how can you be confident about something you’ve never done and aren’t great at yet? I didn’t have the confidence yet because I hadn’t yet built the capability. But, I believed in my own ability to grow and improve. I knew I COULD have the capability if I kept showing up. With each mediocre episode I worked so hard to produce, I got better at it. Things began to come easier to me, and I was happier with the end result. I saw my growth, and THAT’S what gave me my confidence as a podcast host. In this episode, I share my encouragement to you: to build your confidence as a teacher by building your capability. Don’t try to manufacture confidence: build it by taking action. Do the same things over and over until you get good at them or at least better at them, and then move on and try something else. Work toward mastery and depth, knowing that mastery always requires repetition. Reflect each day on what you have grown in, and the things you have learned that day. Notice your progress in the smallest ways. As you start to pay attention to your own growth and recognize your accomplishments, you will build REAL and unshakeable confidence in your abilities as a teacher. What if we knew ourselves as made up of many parts, as opposed to being a single ‘I’? Could we find a new way to relate to the parts that are afraid, hurt, resentful or ashamed? A way that at once treated them with great respect while remembering that there are always other parts which might yet have a voice?. A conversation about the ways we exile aspects of ourselves, and the possibility of taking the wholeness of ourselves into account, with Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. This is Turning Towards Life, a weekly live 30 minute conversation hosted by Thirdspace (http://www.wearethirdspace.org/) in which Justin Wise and Lizzie Winn dive deep into big questions of human living. Find us on FaceBook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/turningtowardslife/) to watch live and join in the lively conversation on this episode. We’re also on YouTube, and as a podcast on Apple, Google and Spotify. You can find videos of every episode, and more about the project on the Turning Towards Life website (http://turningtowards.life/) . Here's our source for this week, which is written by Justin: Facing the losses, together There is a part of me that is tender, grieving and terrified of loss. ‘You’ll leave me’, he says, ‘all of you’ – friends, lovers, family, teachers, life itself. And he means me, too – the one of whom he is a part, the one who is his home. He has sophisticated strategies to try to head off the losses he fears. He wants me to feel afraid, always, so that we won’t make a mis-step which causes others to leave. He’d rather I punish myself if it will get people to stay. He holds on very tight, and sometimes as a result I hold on very tight too. He’s masterful at getting abandonment in first, finding ways for me to get resentful and abandon other people before they can abandon me. I have done this many times in his name. In a way, he feels satisfied when people do actually leave, because it shows that his world view, and his deep fear, are justified. Over time I have come to see that my work is first the work of self-remembering. Remembering that I am vast and multifold. That as well as this part, there are many others. That there are things to feel that are different to what he is feeling. That it is, secondly, to turn towards the inevitable losses that he so fears. Because none of his strategies will save us. And that it is mostly the work of not running from him, not visiting upon him the very abandonment that he fears – but holding him close, cradling him, honouring him. It is my work to welcome him home. To say, “Yes, I see you. I have you. You are safe here. You cannot fall. We can face life – life as it actually is – with all the losses we cannot escape, together”. It is in this welcome that I am freed: to love in the way I want to love, to create, speak out, be vulnerable and intimate and angry and truthful and real, and to risk the risks that are required to be fully alive, the very risks that he is too afraid for me to take. 4 examples to convince you once-and-for-all that the Oxford comma is non-negotiable.   Today, let’s talk about a nerdy debate that continues to rage. But, my dear listeners...there is only ONE CORRECT answer to question… “Oxford comma or not?”   ----- PRODUCT SHOUT OUT -----   I use the Owlet Sock to keep track of my 3-month-year-old's heart rate and oxygen level as he naps and sleeps. It's a game-changer as a new parent! Lifehack. :)     ----------------------------------------     What is the Oxford Comma anyway? Another name for it is the serial comma. It’s when you put a comma before the and in a list of 3 or more things.   For example, “I love the movies Die Hard [comma] Just Go With It [comma] and Independence Day.”     Should I use it?   Yes. Always.     Why?   The short answer is because it’s more clear. Some argue it’s a stylistic choice and to ‘just be consistent in your usage.’ Okay, fair enough. But, there is no denying that writing with the extra comma is more clear!     Here are 4 examples to convince you.   1. How many seats at the table do we need? • Without the Oxford Comma: “I ate lunch with my grandparents, Liz and Kyle.”• With the Oxford Comma: “I ate lunch with my grandparents, Liz, and Kyle.” When you hear this statement, how many seats at the table do you think we need? Well, WITHOUT the Oxford Comma, we could need 3 seats or 5!  What do I mean?    Without the extra comma, I COULD be naming my grandparents as Liz and Kyle. Therefore, we’d need 3 seats...one for me, and two for my grandparents (whose names are Liz and Kyle. Or, I COULD be naming my grandparents and two additional people named Liz and Kyle (who happen to be the names of my favorite cousin and his wife). Therefore, we’d need seats for my grandparents, Liz, Kyle, and me...that’s 5.   Therefore, if -- as in this case -- Liz and Kyle are not the names of my grandparents an Oxford comma is essential to make that clear.      2. Are JFK and Stalin stripping again?     There’s a funny meme image that goes around that reads, “We invited the strippers, JFK, and Stalin to the party.”   And it is accompanied by two images...one with the Oxford comma showing 2 female strippers, JFK, and Stalin (so 4 people) and another without the comma showing JFK and Stalin as strippers (2 people).     3. Can you even talk to toast?     I’ll include it and the stripper image in the shownotes!...is “I had eggs, toast, and OJ.” With the serial comma, it shows you are naming 3 things you had for breakfast. Without the serial comma, it is as if you are saying “I had eggs” TO toast and orange juice...like toast and orange juice are a person you are talking to about your breakfast.  Long story short, there is no denying that the Oxford comma makes your writing more clear. And isn’t that an element of what makes our copy pop? What makes it compelling?    We want to be clear and understood!    I can tell you that when I read lists without the Oxford comma I spend too much time trying to figure out the intended meaning and get annoyed by the author.   If I do that, I am not alone. (There are lots of writing nerds out there -- let’s start a club...we’ll meet on Thursdays ;)). So, don’t annoy your nerdy audience...use the Oxford comma and be crystal clear.   Okay, I think there are still some folks unconvinced...who cares about being crrryyyystal clear if it requires extra punctuation!?      4. The $5 million dollar comma   One final example for you... Not using the Oxford comma could cost you $5 million! Take Oakhurst Dairy and their shipping department — there was an overtime dispute between the company and its drivers. And the whole thing hinged on the lack of an Oxford comma! According to a History 101.com article entitled “30 of the most expensive mistakes in history”... “Lawyers representing the drivers argued that a sentence in a contract the employees all signed needed the oxford comma to clarify that overtime pay was forfeited in a specific situation. “That comma would have sunk our ship,” the drivers’ attorney David G. Webbert told the New York Times. The company settled the lawsuit by paying the drivers a total of $5 million. That’s one expensive comma!”     ---------- Noooowwww are you convinced?? That’s it my nerdy copy compadres! Remember that the Oxford comma is more clear and cost-effective! :-P   Talk again next time when we’ll find more ways together to write copy that pops! :)    Take Action Now on Your Bestselling Book! Podcast Posse! It has been a while since I sent you a voice message. I was all in creation mode and still driving with my Gas Cap on. But today I felt a longing to talk to you. Finally, it's happened to me. (guess what song is the lead jingle for this episode ;-) ) and I wanted to share it with you, so you can have it happen too! I have distilled 3 steps to manifesting anything your HEART desires. Turns out I have been trying to manifest everything my HEAD desired. Those are not real desires.. These 3 steps are the basis for my new project. The Million Dollar Idea that I talked about in the last podcast episode I did, but didn't want to share yet. In this episode I do spill the beans ánd the means. It is also the reason why the podcast is now called the: IN THE POCKET PODCAST. I have considered creating a new channel for the new project but it felt more honest to just keep changing and growing in plain sight. I think it is good to be able to follow growth, getting of the path and back on. So for now the Wild & Free Society Podcast, turned Joyride to Freedom Podcast, turns into the IN THE POCKET PODCAST. In Dutch 'in the pocket' means that you have it under your belt. that you've gót it, that you own it. It has come forth from my own need to not overwhelm myself with all the manifesting tools out there. I became a seeker much more than a finder, I understood everything only as a concept because I was speed reading through the books and was already back at my dealer for the next (NY Times #1) hit before I actually did the assignments in the book.. I binged on reading, listening and learning. Always more more more input input input. Podcasts, books, courses, more more more. a total O.D. of a 'spirit junkie' But manifesting is something you FEEL. If I felt anything it was... OVERWHELM, Anxiety, frustration. My new project is born completely out of my own need to have ONE subject and/ or idea in the pocket first before I COULD go to the next. One chapter, one thing at a time. Implement it and only then move on. So if you can relate, this podcast is a great listen. I share the 3 steps to manifesting ANYTHING. I also share a little lesson I am doing right now, consistently, with GREAT results that MOVES me daily. And I talk about who I am REALLY here for when I follow my HEARTS desire and not my HEAD'S desire. If you are Dutch, you are more than welcome to join the IN THE POCKET CLUB. It's priceless. I go LIVE 3 times a month for completely free. I share the lesson of scarcity I learned this month after depriving myself of giving MORE just because it is for FREE. Business advice is so often totally LOST ON ME, because it is just not who I want to BE. You can sign up easily here: https://app.ruzuku.com/courses/37464/enroll So, If you have the time and FEEL like it, hit play and put me in your pocket! Inwards, thén onwards! InJoy, Lou P.S. Make sure to listen to the encore about who I’m for, I might have accidentally excluded you, even though I adore you! And if I’ve stil left you out, tell me who you are and what you do, I’d love to be there for you too. You’ll know if I am for you, or not, when you hear who I’m NOT for.

Annoying right?   So, a little context for you.  I don’t actually get ill very often but last week seriously had other ideas!   I shall spare you the gory details but I managed to pick me up a lovely case of gastroenteritis...which lasted much longer than it was supposed to.   I was totally wiped out with no choice but to do nothing, and I had a TONNE of things to do.     You KNOW I’m ill when I have no appetite, can’t nap OR watch netflix.     Horrendous.   BUT, I was able to take that time off.   Yes I was momentarily VERY annoyed at the situation because I'm human BUT I didn’t panic about things going wrong in my business, or not showing up as much on social media, or not posting any stories on my Instagram...you can thank me for that actually, nobody needed to see that!   Yes it would have been lovely to have that time to get lots ticked off my to do list BUT that clearly wasn’t going to be the case and health is wealth people, you have to look after yourself.   This is one of the MANY reasons having behavioral flexibility is one of the keys to success.  You can waste your time being annoyed and frustrated or re-group and work out a new plan of action   If you take a few days off to recover the world won’t stop!   I had to shuffle a few things around, have AMAZING understanding clients, had team members in the wings if anything was REALLY urgent and I allowed myself that time to get better. I wasn’t as present on Instagram and my whole business didn’t collapse!   BUT, it does highlight something.     We’re all human and these things can happen and it’s important to get systems in place that mean we can allow ourselves whatever time we need to heal.   From the sick days to the big things that require a little time off, we can put things in place to make sure everything is handled, take the weight off your mind!   It's also WAY better to rest and get better than push and procrastinate and produce sub par work anyway right? You’ll actually end up getting more stuff done.   Here’s a few ideas, have a think about things you could apply to your own business and get them in place so you can enjoy the sweet Netflix and nap time.   Look at your diary and move the moveable! It’s easy to look at things as ‘fixed’ but with a little jiggery pokery and honesty with your clients and audience there will be things that can move.     I moved my live podcast recording in my group, client calls and my group call with my mastermind.  I would have been no good to anyone in my state so they appreciated the move and the honesty! I also got super honest about what was really ‘urgent’ I also worked a bit at the weekend which I try not to do as a rule BUT meant that I could nap guilt free and still get the same amount done.   Have your business ‘processes’ mapped out. If you have regular or key processes mapped out step by step you can hand it over to someone else.  Whether it’s short term...or you kinda like it and it becomes a long term thing. I looove me some outsourcing! If things are mapped out you could even ask a family member to help you out if you wanted to!   Batching Batching is your best friend. The only thing I don’t batch is my podcast recordings because I do them live but even that might change based on last week, ha! It made me realise I COULD have a few backup batched episodes ready to go. Think about it, you could take one day per month and write and upload 4 blogs, use a tool like Missinglettr to set the promo up to run on autopilot.  1 day of work for one month of content! Ooooh!   Team Even part time, or by the hour team members can be a total life saver. All the little things that are on the to do list can be sorted, yes it may cost you a couple of hours but to me that’s worth it for peace of mind and to know I can rest.  What can you outsource? My lovely VA does all sorts of things for me that give me the gift of time. Would you say you just “go with the flow”....handling what every life throws your way? Are you in charge or are you letting fate dictate your next move? Let’s evaluate your current situation and ask yourself this question, “Who is responsible?” Are you struggling with missed opportunities or a bad hand because of something you did? Or is life handing you the lemons? Some of us are stuck in the role of the victim, blaming everything and everyone but ourselves for what is and what is not happening for us. In psychology, this is known as the self-serving bias and refers to people’s tendencies to attribute successes to internal factors and failures to external ones. By doing that, we get a comfortable way out of taking responsibility for our own situation. Once you accept responsibility it’s time to take action. You are going to have to speak up. Not just to your family, friends, or the universe but to yourself. It’s time to have a heart to heart. “What are you waiting for self?” “It’s time we get it together and push over the hump” It’s GO TIME!!” Start with those affirmations and then add to them when you need a positive kick in the pants. An affirmation is really anything you say or think. A lot of what we normally say and think is quite negative and doesn’t create good experiences for us. We have to retrain our thinking and speaking into positive patterns if we want to change our lives. In essence, you’re saying to your subconscious mind: “I am taking responsibility. I am aware that there is something I can do to change.” The brain doesn’t communicate in future or past-tense. Everything that happens is happening in the moment for your brain. So this has to be a daily pep talk. Use language like I WILL instead of I COULD. It’s time you take charge and you can’t exercise authority if you are using passive language. Your new found power can be asserted over any situation. It doesn’t have to be life-altering involving a major move. It could be finding an extra moment to yourself - take it, then demand more. It could be a new hobby you’ve always wanted to try - step out of your comfort zone and give it a try, then try it again. Things get easier and more fun with practice. Maybe it’s a new job or going back to school - what are you waiting for, search for the opportunity and put your hat in the ring - every day you don’t is a day you’ve lost. Challenge: So I challenge you to take responsibility, find your voice, direct your focus, and SPEAK UP. You have the power to make it happened and NO ONE wants “it” more than you. I know YOU can do it! Musical Feature: Danika and The Jeb www.danikaholmes.com

We’re right in the middle of a series of episodes of Pep Talks for Side Hustlers where I’m going to take you behind the scenes of my strategic planning process – so be sure that you’re subscribed so that you don’t miss a step! From setting big goals to getting into the weeds with data to planning out what I’m doing next and and when it’s going to happen, I’m going to break it all down for you, and share the insights I’ve uncovered along the way. In episode 155, I shared with you some key metrics that you’ll need to pull together so that you can figure out where to focus your time and money in the upcoming year, and a formula for figuring out what to focus on based on the numbers. In episode 156, we talked about how to survey our current email list to find out who is buying from us, who isn’t and what to do about it. Then in episode 157, I shared with how to figure out if what you’re spending your time and money on is actually worth your efforts. Now that we know all of that stuff, NOW we can set some goals. My favorite method of goal setting comes from Chalene Johnson. She’s best known for her work in the fitness industry and that’s how I came to know her in my never-ending quest to lose the extra 30 pounds I carry on my 5’3’’ frame. My best friend is a total TurboFire addict – she tried really hard to convert me but I’m just not that coordinated – but she did get me to read Chalene’s book PUSH with her so that together we could set some health goals and keep each other accountable. After reading that book and doing everything Chalene told me to do, instead of losing 30 pounds – I started a business. Yep, that whole thing took a total left-turn. Here’s how it happened. Chalene’s strategy for goal setting is to set 10 goals in a variety of areas in your life, for example: – Purpose / Career – Marriage / Romantic Life – Physical Health and Fitness – Mental Health – Friendships – Faith / Spirituality – Get Smarter / Personal Development – Hobby / Recreation / Just for Fun And then for each of those goals that you set, you think of actions a few actions you can take to accomplish those goals. So for Physical Health and Fitness, I had a goal to lose 30 pounds, and the actions were to eat healthy at every meal, work out daily, a drink more water. My Marriage goal was to stick to a weekly date night, friendships were to put effort into maintaining friendships that were important to me by initiating lunch dates, I had a lot of goals for our house, like painting trim white, getting new carpet, granite countertops and actual real bedroom furniture, like I felt like a 35 year old should have. I set goals to become debt free Dave Ramsey style. So I had all these goals in all these areas of my life, and all these tactics listed out on how to actually accomplish them. And here’s where Chalene’s system is pretty genius. You look at that whole list, and you think, “What’s ONE GOAL that I could accomplish that will make all of these other goals much, much easier to accomplish?” It might be a goal that’s already on that list, or it might be a goal you hadn’t even thought of yet. I started by thinking, what do I need to make all of these things happen? The answer? More time, and more money. Then I asked myself, “How do I get more time, and more money.” The answer? By owning my own business and being my own boss. And you know how when you know you’ve landing on something, it’s like a lightbulb moment? It happened at that moment. Side hustle. Make enough money to quit your day job and then you’ll have the time to prepare healthy meals, work out in the middle of the day. You’ll be able to make as much money as you want and then you can pay off all your debt, do all the stuff to your house you want to do, and wear yoga pants all day. Well what am I going to do? That I didn’t figure out until later as I was sitting in my office miserable at my day job. Web design. WordPress. Freelance. One one hand, it was a great way to actually avoid putting the effort into losing the weight, but on the other hand, I made every other single thing on that list happen by starting my own business. Four years after setting that goal, here I am. I own a business and I’m my own boss. And I’m currently working on the 30 pounds now that I actually am self- employed, by the way. So when it comes to your strategic plan for your side hustle, you can use the exact same method to help you not only set goals, but to figure out where to focus your time and effort! Here are the areas in which I brainstormed goals for myself this year. Notice I said Brainstormed, not Set. I’ll get to that in a minute. But here are the categories – and if you want to see what the actual goals I brainstormed are, you can head over to peptalksforsidehustlers.com/158 or pause this episode, scroll down into the show notes and click the link to this episode. And as I share these categories with you, I want you to brainstorm goals based on the data you’ve already pulled together and what your numbers are telling you. Not just pulling things out of thin air because you want to – I mean, you can totally do that, it’s your side hustle, but that’s what we call shiny object syndrome. It’s fun to do, but it gets you nowhere! Okay so here they are: Products Increase sales of existing products Launch signature programs just once a year. Open membership to SSH quarterly. Keep a positive attitude. How Can I? Schedule and stick to your time off. Technology Evaluate all of my technology and decide if changes are needed (and if they are the best use of my time – cost/benefit). Computer Podcasting Equipment CRM So I have goals that I COULD accomplish in all of those areas. But the big question I need to ask myself before I just jump in and burn myself into the ground… WHY? Why do I need to do any of this. Why do I want to do any of it? Why am I doing this instead of getting a traditional job and taking a paycheck? And the answer is to support myself and live my dream life. So what’s my dream life look like? My dream life is to be able to do what I want to do whenever I want to do it without worrying about whether I can afford it or not. The 3 F’s: Freedom, flexibility and financial independence. So if that’s my why, then it makes sense that I need to look at my revenue goal first and make sure it’s in alignment with my why. If I told you I wanted to make a million dollars next year, that’s way more money than I need in Columbus, Ohio to be able to do what I want to do whenever I want to do it without worrying about whether I can afford it or not. And maybe someday I’ll have a bigger vision where a million dollars will make total sense, and I think it’s floating around in my head somewhere, but my mind hasn’t yet expanded to the place where I can see what that is. It’s fuzzy around the edges, I know it has to do with empowering women in technology, but it’s not fully clear. But that’s why I’ll go through this process every year, because that WHY is going to change. There are two things on this list that stand out as I think about my why. Revenue, and Time Management. So if it’s revenue that’s going to support my why, then looking at my list of all the things I COULD do, I need to pare it down to things that are going to have the most immediate impact on my revenue. So for me, the number one thing that can have the biggest impact on my revenue is increasing the number of Done For You clients that I book every year. And then in second place would be increasing the number of students in the Web Designer Academy, then number of Serious Side Hustlers members, but far and away, it’s one on one client work. Which is in direct opposition to my other goal of working less and giving myself more time for self care by increasing revenue from passive income so that I have more freedom and flexibility – that doesn’t come from working with clients one on one. And that, my friends, is where the PUSH goal comes in. What’s the ONE THING I can do that will make all these other things easier? Or as my business coach Vicki Fitch likes to say, “How Can I?” And the answer is very clear: Build a team & Delegate. That’s the domino that if I push it over, it will knock down all the other dominos faster and easier. It will make it easier to accomplish the 10 other goals I’ve set for myself based on the data and the number that we’ve already reviewed throughout this process. I didn’t just pick these goals out of thin air, they are based on what I’ve learned from the data. I can’t do it all myself unless I don’t care about working 100 hours a week – and that’s not an exaggeration. Having a team to help with client projects and a team that can do the things I’ve been doing so that I can focus on the things that only I can do, like record my voice on this podcast, is critical to accomplishing those goals. And so that’s one of the lenses through which I’ll be evaluating that list of goals that I just created. The other lens is the data that I’ve just gathered up about what I’m currently doing for marketing and if it’s getting the results I want. And I just want to mention that there is another option. I could decide that I like what I’m doing, that I’m satisfied with all of it and not make any changes. That’s a 100% okay answer after walking through all of this. I could have created a plan that said, I’m satisfied, just keep doing what I’m doing. I’m not quite there yet because I’m working more than I want to work and making less than I want to make. But you might be there. You might not need a PUSH goal, that’s okay! But if you ever find yourself in a spot where you want to change something but you’re not sure how to make progress towards it, Chalene’s PUSH goal strategy is a fantastic way to help you get traction. So right now you’re gonna want to hit subscribe because episode 159, I’m going to walk you how to turn these goals into an actual plan.

For me? Simple. Brownies and Chocolate Chip Cookies. Sure, on a flexible diet, I COULD have these, if I wanted to, but I know better. Not only are these choices a little low on the nutrient scale (making the rest of the day pretty challenging), but I know that the likelihood that I overeat on either of these is about 100%. In this Sitch on Saturday, I'm talking about some simple changes you can bring to your life to switch your words and your thoughts and start going after what you want in life!  I began my transformation at age 42 with a bleak outcome of what I thought my life would like at age 50.  I made a decision one day to change my mindset and start focusing on how I COULD change instead of focusing on how HARD it was to lose weight, build two businesses, and get in the best shape of my life by 50.  All of these things seemed impossible to me but I held tight to my dreams and I stuck with it.   I talk about Jen Sincero's, You Are A Badass, and You Are a Badass at Making Money and her tips to Busting Yourself and Watch Your Mouth.   Jen Sincero gives an awesome demonstration of how you can choose "new" words to replace the negative and change your life.  She has done it as she was in the same boat as me, negative and lacking confidence in her ability to change.   If you are ready to work on developing a healthy relationship with food and stop "dieting" (for good), my May Group Coaching, Change Your Mind to Change Your Body starts May 14th.   This program is like no other and offers a solution where you will lose weight and learn what foods to eat to keep it off without calorie counting or restrictions.   Click here to get pre-registered and you will receive an email from me to get you started.    *Please note, that the books I listed above are affiliate links where I will receive a very small commission if you purchase through the link.  I only recommend things that I read or use and that has helped me in changing my thoughts and my lifestyle.

I've realized I've been lying about how much I work. I say I work 4 hours a day – 25 hours a week. But really, is that true? I won't say I've been lying, but with everything I do – admin, emails, sales activities, content creation, I DO work about 4 hours a day. But a few years ago, I decided and started to believe that I COULD make A LOT of money and a helluva impact through doing what I love – writing, speaking, putting myself out there. And that belief has come TRUE. A lot of the stuff I do you could classify as "work," but to me – it's more than that. It's a ritual.I don't remember half of the "work" I do! When I get up – I spent 30 mins as journalling. But that's not "work," right? Then there's my writing – I spend AT LEAST 1- 2 horus a day on writing. So that's at least 6 and a half hours a day "working." For me, my writing is how I grow my tribe – if I don't write, I DON'T SELL! Then there's filming videos, Periscoping, reading – I DON'T consider that work. That's at least another 45 minutes / 1 hour a day. 7.5 hours every day. THEN there's working out. That's not work either – BUT I get ideas when I'm in the middle of a workout. It clears my mind – it's my MEDITATION. Another 30 minutes of work! There's 8 hours every day. My day and schedule ALWAYS changes. All of this might not be w"work," but IT ALWAYS ADDS UP. It always ties in. And that's what matters. • Work doesn't stop after admin, emails, or sales activities • Being an entrepreneur is a LIFESTYLE • When you love what you do, it's not a clock-in-clock-out job, it's much more than thatEXERCISEWhat can you DECIDE to have in your life that you'd be able to call 'work'? The way I saw things having a pronoun for a title, i.e. Dredd, was going to work in my favor this week since I could watch a movie like The Cabin in the Woods and change it to Dredd in the Woods or The Cabin in the Dredd. Well getting back to the episode I decided to revie,w End of Watch, which is actually pretty good. And Dredd, which I didn't watch in 3D but actually is a good movie but it's a little light on the story but the action makes up for it. As is usual I cover the Box Office Report, and the Trailer Spot this week is Paranormal Activity 4. I wasn't too impressed since it looks like more of the same but if that's what brings people in they clearly aren't catering to me. Lastly there is the news and my Closing Comments are about Steins;Gate and the replacement refs not at the same time but one after the other. Enjoy the show! When you want to emphasize an action or state in English, you either do it by adding more stress to the verb in the intonation, or by adding the word "do" in front of the verb. Example #1A: It's not easy.B: No, it IS easy!Example #2A: Why did you not go there?B: I DID go, but I came back early.Example #3A: Do you think you can do it?B: Well, I COULD do it, but I don't want to do it.Now in this lesson, let us take a look at how to express these in Korean. The simplest way to do this is by changing the intonation.A: 왜 안 했어요? [wae an hae-sseo-yo?] = Why didn't you do it?B: 했어요! [hae-sseo-yo!] = I DID do it! The above is when you are simply disagreeing with the other person and presenting a different fact. But if you want to add some conditions or premises to your sentence and say “I did do it, but...” or “I do like it, but...” you need to use a different verb ending. Example #1A: So you didn’t even do it?B: I did!! I DID do it, but I had some help.Example #2A: Can you do it?B: I COULD do it, but I don’t want to do it.Now let’s look at how to express these in Korean. The key is “-기는”. This is the noun form -기 plus the topic marker -는. The topic marker is used to show contrast. Example #1갔어요. [ga-sseo-yo.] = I went (there).→ 가기는 갔어요. [ga-gi-neun ga-sseo-yo.] = I DID go (there) but...→ 가기는 했어요. [ga-gi-neun hae-sseo-yo.] = I DID go (there) but...→ 가기는 갔는데, 일찍 왔어요. [ga-gi-neun gat-neun-de, il-jjik wa-sseo-yo.] = I DID go there, but I came back early.→ 가기는 갈 거예요. [ga-gi-neun gal geo-ye-yo.] = I WILL go, but … ( + other premises )Example #2봤어요. [bwa-sseo-yo.] = I saw (it).→ 보기는 봤어요. [bo-gi-neun bwa-sseo-yo.] = I DID see (it) but ...→ 보기는 했어요. [bo-gi-neun hae-sseo-yo.] = I DID see (it) but …→ 보기는 봤는데 기억이 안 나요. [bo-gi-neun bwat-neun-de gi-eo-gi an-na-yo.] = I DID see it, but I don’t remember. How to say “I COULD do it but ...”To say that you can do something, you use the structure, -(으)ㄹ 수 있다. And since here, -(으)ㄹ 수 is a NOUN GROUP that literally means “a method for doing something” or “possibility/ability”, you can JUST use the topic marker without having to change it again into the noun form. It’s already a noun.Example 할 수 있어요. [hal su i-sseo-yo.] = I can do (it).→ 할 수는 있어요. [hal su-neun i-sseo-yo.] = I COULD do it, but …→ 할 수는 있는데, 안 하고 싶어요. [hal su-neun it-neun-de, an ha-go si-peo-yo.] = I COULD do it, but I don’t want to.→ 할 수는 있는데, 조건이 있어요. [hal su-neun it-neun-de, jo-geo-ni i-sseo-yo.] = I COULD do it, but there’s a condition.More Sample Sentences1. 어제 친구를 만나기는 했는데, 금방 헤어졌어요. [eo-je chin-gu-reul man-na-gi-neun haet-neun-de, geum-bang he-eo-jyeo-sseo-yo.]= I DID meet a friend yesterday, but we parted soon.2. 시간 맞춰서 도착하기는 했는데, 준비를 못 했어요.[si-gan mat-chwo-seo do-cha-ka-gi-neun haet-neun-de, jun-bi-reul mot hae-sseo-yo.]= I DID manage to get there on time, but I couldn’t prepare.3. 읽기는 읽었는데 이해가 안 돼요.[il-gi-neun il-geot-neun-de i-hae-ga an dwae-yo.]= I DID read it, but I don’t understand it.4. 좋기는 좋은데, 너무 비싸요.[jo-ki-neun jo-eun-de, neo-mu bi-ssa-yo.]= It IS good, but it’s too expensive. 5. 맛있기는 맛있는데, 좀 짜요.[ma-sit-gi-neun ma-sit-neun-de, jom jja-yo.]= It IS delicious, but it’s a bit salty.

During the six days of X-Day Drill #14, we recorded daytime ranting and "live radio" (for later playback) in the Wisteria café, and at night we recorded bands, ranting, and jamming in general on the main stage. Everything was recorded at least 3 ways: off the sound mixing board (like this whole show), on a Mini-DV video camera, and with a good location recorder capturing ambient sound. That's a lot of hours of sound to edit. Perhaps luckily for me, at this writing I, Stang don't yet have possession of many board recordings after the first day. Normally I would intersperse the radio talk segments with music and fevered ranting, and by next week I'm sure I'll be able to. In fact, this week, were there perfect Time Control, and if I hadn't had to do the Starwood Festival (also at Wisteria) immediately after X-Day. I'd have had that option, as there are some wonderful jams and rants from the first two nights that I COULD have used. I decided not to, partly because I have to get this damn thing in the mail and on the air, but partly because this first live Hour of Slack by Dr. Hal, Papa Joe Mama, and Priestess Pisces seems to flow just beautifully without any interruptions. Perhaps this is because I personally was off-mic most of the time. I even broke the main file up into segments to allow cutting to music -- but I don't think I would want to even if I'd had the time. The key SubGenius themes are discussed by these mighty yakmasters so well that inserting music and solo jeremiads seems inadvisable. It's uncut all-talk, and in this case all the better for that. By next week I should have BOXES of board recordings of bands to choose from and compare to the location recordings I made. We have also almost finished a large gallery of carefully selected photos; they require only more accurate file-names to be added, unfortunately by me. Those, a detailed text report, and MP3s of some of the better music from early in the X-Day week should all be on the SubSITE 14X-Day pages fairly soon after I get this Hour of Slack episode out of the Slackermansion and into the world. (The web page doesn't have deadlines, but the weekly radio show does.)

G Darley read by Classic Poetry Aloud: Giving voice to the poetry of the past. www.classicpoetryaloud.com -------------------------------------------- The Loveliness of Love by George Darley (1795–1846) It is not Beauty I demand, A crystal brow, the moon’s despair, Nor the snow’s daughter, a white hand, Nor mermaid’s yellow pride of hair: Tell me not of your starry eyes, Your lips that seem on roses fed, Your breasts, where Cupid tumbling lies Nor sleeps for kissing of his bed:— A bloomy pair of vermeil cheeks Like Hebe’s in her ruddiest hours, A breath that softer music speaks Than summer winds a-wooing flowers, These are but gauds; nay, what are lips: Coral beneath the ocean-stream, Whose brink when your adventurer slips Full oft he perisheth on them. And what are cheeks but ensigns oft That wave hot youth to fields of blood? Did Helen’s breast, though ne’er so soft, Do Greece or Ilium any good? Eyes can with baleful ardour burn; Poison can breathe, than erst perfumed; There’s many a white hand holds an urn With lovers’ hearts to dust consumed. For crystal brows there’s nought within; They are but empty cells for pride; He who the Syren’s hair would win Is mostly strangled in the tide. Give me, instead of Beauty’s bust, A tender heart, a loyal mind Which with temptation I would trust, Yet never link’d with error find,— One in whose gentle bosom I Could pour my secret heart of woes, Like the case-burthen’d honey-fly That hides his murmurs in the rose— My earthly Comforter! whose love So indefeasible might be That, when my spirit wonn’d above Hers could not stay, for sympathy.
